Hillary Clinton's Running Mate, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine: Your Rights Don't Come from God, They're Granted by the Government At Its Pleasure, and Christians Saying Otherwise Are Iranian Religious Fanatics

Say, remember when they all used to pretend to go to church and once in a while pretended to give glory to God?

I knew they were lying, of course, but I think I liked the lying better than the truth.

Even if you're secular, the idea that rights derive from God is a very attractive one. It's an alternate way of saying these rights are innate -- inborn, possessed since birth simply as part of the patrimony of being a human being -- and therefore inviolate.

As a somewhat famous Declaration put it:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.

It is slightly different to invoke God as the source of these rights, but the gist of it, whether you're religious or secular, is the same: The government does not grant these rights as it chooses, these rights are innate and inviolable, and therefore the government may not steal away these rights, even if it finds them deeply inconvenient.

Adding God into the mix helps secure them, because people will tend to physically fight if someone attempts to steal away God-given rights, and that's a positive thing when it comes to your most basic, fundamental political rights.

Tim Kaine, and all other Democrats, do not want to acknowledge God because they are, whether they realize it or not, Satanists. But the practical reason they want to contradict the Founding Father's own statement that these rights derive from God is because they seek to undo these rights, so they argue that they can increase or decrease your rights as easily as they can increase or decrease the top marginal income tax rates. God's got nothing to do with it, you see, so you have no argument against the state stripping you of your rights.

The Declaration and Constitution are a covenant, and agreement by which the people consent to be governed, and if the terms of that covenant are violated, then the consent to be governed is withdrawn and we may ignore it and physically oppose it.

Otherwise, the government can just alter the terms of our agreement at its own self-interested whim.


Kaine goes even further, and declares that anyone who disagrees and believes that rights derive from God and are therefore inviolable, no matter how much a transitory government wants to violate them, is the equivalent of an Allah-besotted mullah or terrorist in Iran.

And of course Kaine rejects the idea that if the government steals away these rights -- that is, that it becomes "destructive to these ends" of securing liberty -- then that government has forfeited its legitimacy and may justifiably be rebelled against.

The government owns you. It owns you, it owns your children, it owns your souls, it owns your children's souls, and you just have to accept that, Peasant.

Well, this has certainly been clarifying.

You're right, ace, you can take the word "God" out of this and say "innate," as in something you're born with. Probly going to rile a few people here, but it's a fact: you can equally use terms like "natural rights" and "innate rights" for the purposes of this argument. In fact, I think it's better because otherwise this whole national discussion is going to turn into a "Whose religion is the true religion?" fight, which is a distraction from the essence of of the argument.

It's sickening that Kaine actually thinks the government's job is to decide on your rights, not to PROTECT and GUARANTEE your rights. This is so basic.

I just have to once again put forward my theory that Democrat politics completely changed after the 2010 Tea Party election.

Scared stiff that they'd lose power for ideological and practical reasons, they cast off the populace and chose to fortify elections to retain power. They did this through fed grant money to non-profits that bolstered the Democrat party financially which allowed them to enforce greater and greater direct control over election results in favorable precincts, especially in the face of a GOP unwilling to even consider fighting back.

No longer concerned with winning voters, they just became increasingly radical, bending to the whims of the craziest and loudest of those within the power structure, who reinforced their positions through personnel decisions.

Breaking that model has become Trump's main focus in his second term, and Democrats simply do not know anymore how to fight back any other way than with increasing radicalism.

Just since Monday, but it's my default fasting method when I actually stick to it. If I can keep to it for a few weeks, I end up losing decent weight pretty quickly. I also have a goal of January (our next cruise) to give me an end in sight.

I find doing it during the week easy enough, just say no to snacks that suddenly become meals. It's the weekends that get me.

Notably foreign students had the most difficult time with those ideas--alien, foreign, and scary to them. God-given Rights are inherently limited to the common knowledge of the God who granted them. You could include deists in the discussion since their worldview was within what we'd probably handwave away as 'culturally Christian', with highly overlapping understanding of right and wrong, and 'how things ought to be' and still get some conclusions that 1776 Americans could all agree to.

Most of what's gone wrong in this country since its founding is due to getting away from that original common understanding. That need for commonality (most easily achieved by a common relationship with God) is why our system is incompatible with islam or marxism.

Running Cooper in NC reminds me of when the Dims ran the last governor of their party for a Senate seat in TN. The governor was not that many years removed from office (and he won at least one of his races in a blowout), but he didn't come close to winning a Senate seat.

Governor is the best office for oddball candidates to win, since it's high profile but not federal and therefore connected directly with DC. See the governors of KY and VT for examples.

The politics of a statewide governorship and a statewide Senate seat are just different.

If NC is actually purple, Cooper has a shot.

If NC is trending redder, he doesn't.

It's why Hogan could easily win the governorship of MD and get embarrassed in a senate race immediately after that governorship ended. People just view the politics of a senate race in more purely partisan terms.

Any amendments still required 3/4 ratification by the states. I am less afraid of amendment than perhaps a runaway Convention that scraps the old and writes a new one. Not that it would get a 3/4 ratification right now but that it might spawn a civil war between red and blue states. It should wait until we figure out whether Trump and his successors can make their remodelling government will stick. Midterms are a good starting point for that.

That, and churches are a major part of civil society.

Think about it. Many, if not all, churches engage in charity. The congregations chip in and work to ameliorate problems like homelessness and poverty. If they were left to their own devices…government would have little to do.

Government would much rather civil society be destroyed so they can usurp those functions and make people utterly dependent on them. Government, even in this country, views civil society as a threat.

The antifederalists, specifically Brutus, called out the necessary and proper clause as the ticking time bomb. And Justice Marshall used it in McCulloch v. Maryland as such as did Hamilton to create the First Bank of the US. By moving away from strict limits on enumeration of powers to where if the ends are legitimate and not contradictory to any provisions in the current Constitution, then Congress should be able to use its enumerated powers to color outside the believed Constitutional limits.

Libertarian F. Paul Wilson, in his LaNague series, dealt with something similar in his series of sci fi books. You might enjoy them--the first Enemy of the State, got some libertarian grant of pure gold for that book as an award.
