  • AI could bring us a smarter home - if we can trust it, which we obviously can't. (The Verge) (archive site)

They're talking about combining three things, each hilariously unreliable: The Internet of Things, consumer appliances, and LLM-driven AI.

It all reminds me of this:
Tech Enthusiasts: Everything in my house is wired to the Internet of Things! I control it all from my smartphone! My smart-house is bluetooth enabled and I can give it voice commands via alexa! I love the future!

Programmers / Engineers: The most recent piece of technology I own is a printer from 2004 and I keep a loaded gun ready to shoot it if it ever makes an unexpected noise.
My house was built in 2019 and it contains no smart anythings.

17 When I replaced my HVAC equipment the installer put in a furnace/AC controller that is connected to the intertubes and can accessed by an cell phone app. 6 years later I can say I will always have this type of controller. There's lots of little use cases that you don't think about until you have one.

One is I can be out and about and flip on the AC so the house is cooled down when I get home. Another one is I can turn down the AC in the middle of the night while I'm in bed. Walking over to the device Is now too much trouble. After that I can't think of another smart device I would have in the house. My experience with time saving devices is you have to manage them and they end up being more work than they're worth.

39 After that I can't think of another smart device I would have in the house.

We've recently installed automated blinds, albeit without a smart controller. Being able to schedule blind openings would solve a problem with the Texas sun and items of furniture being bleached by said Texas sun.

Door locks. Don't worry and wonder if you forgot to lock the front door while you are gone.

I am quite paranoid about providing external internet access to anything related to my home's physical security. My garage doors have an app that would allow me to do things remotely. I've never bothered to allow that access. I prefer my thieves to noisily break a window to gain entrance versus using an app to silently unlocking the front door to be able to quietly walk in.

48 "This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it."

Psalm 118:24.

And this is the note from my Bible ( The Life Application Bible)

There are days when the last thing we want to do is rejoice. Our mood is gloomy; the situation is out of hand, and our sorrow or guilt is overwhelming. We can relate to the writers of the psalms, who often felt this way. But no matter how low the writers felt, they were always honest with God. And as they poured out their hearts to him, their despair often turned to praise. When you don't feel like rejoicing, tell God how you truly feel. You will find
God will show you reasons to rejoice. God has given you this day to live and serve him- be glad, because serving Him makes all the difference in the World."

53 You are dead wrong. The electric company has zero knowledge or access to this device

There was an incident in Colorado where smart thermostats were locked because of an "energy emergency."

The companies can access the devices but the customer had to sign an agreement with the power company to allow access in return for lower bills.

This being me, the option to say no to outsiders having access will be taken away on these devices in a few years because greenies are crying over Mother Earth.

I have multiple external IP cameras who were talking to some external server that I didn't authorize. I have those reporting to a Linux box that blocks any traffic to the outside world. Thank you, and it will. It's the first few days. The schools are mostly organized, but chaos can suddenly appear, much like if someone releases a greased piglet in the house.

Getting things back in order quickly is much like trying to catch, and hold on to that greased piglet.

The first day back has more than its fair share of piglet events. This should calm down as everyone falls into a mostly predictable routine.

My thermostat has zero capabilities in that direction. The power company has been pushing installing thermostats they can control in exchange for a small price break. I am like hell no to that. I don't know Gaia people would force that. Unlike an external meter which is necessary to get service, the power company has zero legal basis to mandate installing a device it owns and controls inside your house. The lawsuits would come fast and furious if a power company tried to mandate those.

69 Ha! I had a Canon color printer/scanner. Every now and then it would spool up, whirr, make a few clicking noises. It was kind of strange. I’d usually give it the side eye and say “Oh yeah!?” Sat idle for many years and when I fired it up it still worked fine. More surprisingly Canon had drivers for it, their website support was good. Even more more surprisingly I was able to get them installed and it worked great.

Then I discovered they use two (2) different black ink cartridges. The default, even when printing only text documents, is to use a little bit of both cartridges. It runs out quickly that way. “Low Ink” light blinking. I could have shot it for that reason, thinking back on it. Those Ink cartridges are a thorn in their side. The scanner was great for taking pictures and editing stuff for online sales though.

73 Printer ink cartridges are cruel and expensive. They are the dominatrix of the technology world.

I got rid of my inkjet printer when the last cartridges ran out. My choice was to spend $150 on ink or buy a full function printer that uses toner. The toner printers are the way to go for everyday printing as long as you're good with black and white. The color toner printers are very expensive.

Very true. But back then, Financial Aid treated you as a burden that was interrupting their lazy days. As much as I didn't want to, I learned that being an utter asshole to these people were the only way they were going to finish their jobs and give me money.

The only exception was this nice lady that worked there. She resolved every single problem I ever had without breaking a sweat. To this day, she still is puzzled at my gratitude and says "But I was only doing my job."

76 …each hilariously unreliable: … consumer appliances…

Consumer appliances aren’t hilariously unreliable, they’re sadly unreliable. I have consumer appliances well past fifty years old still working great: blenders, mixers; and some approaching fifty years old—my refrigerator, my dishwasher, my microwave, may all be from the eighties. They’re still (dare I tempt fate) going strong. But I do fear the day I have to replace them with something new.

Even some newer items bought during this century are extraordinarily reliable, such as a Kitchen Aid stand mixer and a Cuisinart food processor, all bought in the oughts.

Most of these things are single-purpose appliances that ought to be reliable to the point of not even thinking of them as reliable. And we know how, or knew how, to build such things.

I’m guessing because it’s easier to calculate how much time you have on a charge.

You can take the CPU wattage, add in some more watts based on SSD, RAM, and GPU, if applicable, and get a rough estimate of how long you can be away from the charger.

The highest you can get is 99Wh, seem in gaming & premium large laptops.
Anything more than that is illegal to take in planes due to fire hazards.

81 Yes - I had little reason to print color docs. There was a software setting to use only the large black ink cartridge iirc maybe. But it would always give the “low ink” blink, the bahstid. Something like that. Annoying.

I was more annoyed with Windows. I remember trying to use whatever software for typing something up. It is very powerful, but I couldn’t figure out how to do something really simple, too many bells and whistles, it was maddening. Think I used Notepad and deleted the whole damn program.

85 You are dead wrong. The electric company has zero knowledge or access to this device.

What brand is it? Because I’ve been looking for a thermostat which does not connect to an external server but just uses my HomeKit hub. I’ve never seen one. They all require a connection to the manufacturer’s server, which in term can be used to communicate with whoever the manufacturer wants, including the electric company.

86 Consumer appliances aren’t hilariously unreliable, they’re sadly unreliable.

Just had to replace a Maytag washer from 2016, last week. The motor locked up, no spin cycle.

The 25 year old dryer sitting next to it has had the heating element, thermostats, and fuses replaced and works fine, for now.

90 My laser printers at work since about 2015 were two HP Laser Jets, the color ones that would also scan and copy and were networkable. It cost about $500, I think, in 2015, and the second one at my last job in 2018 was close to the same. Cartridges ran over $100 each; there were four, black, red, blue, and yellow. Always worked well, as it should at that kind of money.

My printer at home is much older, a laser I'm too lazy to get up and look at to see the manufacturer. B & W only. It works fine for printing manuscripts and eBay shipping labels. I need to replace it with one that has a scanner.

Those are a really interesting solution. I don't print that much. So my concern with the Eco tanks is how likely would the print heads plug? This goes triple because I live in a desert. If I understood that I might have gone that route instead of a toner printer. Good luck trying to find out that answer though.

95 From what I can tell most 4+1 cartridge ink jets won’t let you print anything if one of the color cartridges is out, even if you’re printing straight black.

Which is really stupid.

The stupidest thing is HP printer-scanners not allowing you to scan anything if an ink cartridge is low.

Pretty sure that this has been explained... numerous times.

161 Hadrian,

I will miss your frequent comments when HM gets home, but glad she will be back at the homestead.

(Loved that pic of Diana catching the pancake.)

164 I’ve read some of Caitlin Johnstone’s articles over the years at ZeroHedge.

While I can generally agree with her libertarian takes on government, her nutty views on everything else are a turn-off.

She’s got that extreme-right hate for Jews that’s so common among that group now.

They seriously believe that most of the world’s problems could be fixed if Israel didn’t exist, and by extension America for supporting Israel.

It’s just another virtue signaling pose against supposed tyranny and colonialism.

They read a few books that supposedly enlighten them on the history of the conflict there and never to think to realize what’s been left out of the propaganda and why they are so eager to be manipulated into thinking the Israelis are the bad guys here.

I guess since the Palestinians have been bitching and morning for eighty years, instead of building a functioning nation and economy like the Israelis have, that means he who complains the loudest and longest wins among the “blame it on oppression” crowd.

It’s so tiresome.

166 >The Acer Swift Air 16 could be decent

It could be if it was made by anyone but Acer. Acer laptops are disposable crap with terrible QA and build quality so poor I can literally break them in half with my bare hands. And have, to prove the point. Wait for another vendor.
