Which of the following three competing historigraphical theories do you think is correct -- The Progressive Theory, The Pendulum Theory, or the Conveyor Belt Theory? 1. The Progressive Theory — History is the story of progress, and things are always evolving to get "better and better," in the sense of more tolerant, more accepting, less tradition-bound, so that history will always eternally trend left-ward. 2. The Pendulum Theory — Society always swings back and forth from Left to Right and Right to Left, such that whenever one side is dominant, it overdoes things, people get sick of it, and swing back to the other side. And then the reverse, ad infinitum. 3. The Conveyor Belt Theory — Leftism is a delusion borne from ignorance, naiveté, and social conformity, and once you wake up from it, you achieve a higher state of awareness which you can never lose, and a a result everyone's political arc is a conveyor belt endlessly heading rightward, with ignorant brainwashed youth entering at one end and being carried by life rightward so that by the time they are mature and wise, they -- and the society they comprise -- are conservative. 2) is true if you look only at things like support for welfare programs -- that does tend to oscillate. But "lots of social programs" and "socialism" are two different things entirely. For example, though often referred to as "socialist", all of the Scandinavian countries have market economies. They're capitalist countries with stupefyingly high taxes and levels of social spending, but that's not socialism.

For fun, I had Grok run the orbital numbers. Placing earth in a orbit around Saturn at the Moon's current distance, whole system at earths' current distance of 1 au. Orbital period would be 21.3 hours. Earth would tidally lock quickly, same side facing Saturn. Day would 21.3 hours long, as we're still going around the sun, but whipping around Saturn like a mofo. Now, having it calculate the ocean tide expectations. Even with the tidal locking, they would still be significant, with sloshing water. Posted by: zombie ------------- My theory is conforms to this. It has two parts (if pixy limit permits) 1. Leftism is the "white noise" of ideology. It is ideology without information, like the white noise on a radio between stations. This makes it the natural state and conforms to people's experience in families and school of being cared for under strict rules. So, a conveyor belt but the starting point is ignorance and emotion. 2. This same process applies to technology. All technology creates cracks that society has to fill with knowledge. New technologies are exploited by the Left to oppress and control. With time (sometimes centuries) society adapts to the technology. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia Also true for the solar system as a whole. Currently, the barycenter of the solar system is not inside the sun, so the sun is "orbiting" that spot. Although "that spot" is only about half a solar radius outside the sun. The barycenter of the solar system will be back inside the sun in 2027, and actually near the sun's center around 2030, then back out again in 2033. We now have access to around 2 dozen, IIRC. Besides, ever hear of the Cold War? Who paid for much of urrup's defense? Sweden? Posted by: man at September 03, 2025 07:58 PM (tubbA) Access doesn’t mean we are there, nor does it mean we are paying for it. I have heard of the Cold War. I lived in Europe because of it. (Does our victory in the Cold War make you feel embarrassed, ashamed, or both?) I have also been by many places that used to be bases but have long ago been shuttered. Sweden was neutral for decades. Only recently have they joined NATO. They were paying their own freight for defense, primarily because they wanted to. About the only thing we paid for was a liaison officer to be at the Embassy in Stockholm. We have liaison officers at every embassy, upsetting as that may be to you. Medical Doctor who’s President of the Nevada State Medical Association says American Health Insurance companies are now denying removing stillbirths from patients and denying their hospital stays “This denial is so incredibly egregious, I don't even know what to do with it — So we now have absolutely no way to get this baby out.” “Hi, my name is Dr. Joseph Adashek. That could be days or that could be weeks. It's hard to know. So just got a letter from Aetna denying they either dilation and evacuation, a D&E procedure to get their baby out. AoS Poll
Which of the following three competing historigraphical theories do you think is correct -- The Progressive Theory, The Pendulum Theory, or the Conveyor Belt Theory? ------------- This question is from zombie in the last thread. I didn't want to leave it there as my answer would have been right at the end when everyone has left. My choice is The Pendulum Theory. We are seeing it in effect now particularly with the transgender horrors. People like to think that they are modern and liberal in their attitudes but when a fad or practice becomes so extreme or destructive you get a recoil reaction and then you notice more and more such perversions. The open borders is the another example of going too far particularly when it is harming your own population economically and physically. The more you look around the more you find these extremes and people reacting negatively to them. The pendulum is stalled at the moment, it has reached its limit and is about to start the return journey, it will pick up speed as more and more people realize they have been had and join in opposing the status quo. In any case, medical insurance companies have way too much control over our lives -- and it all started with FDR's meddling in what should be the free market. With any luck, some fearless MAGA leader will roll back that damage and our descendants will read about the phase of American history when subsidized health care pushed medical prices through the roof, and desk-dwellers could deny your 10-year-old an anaesthetic for a painful, invasive procedure. Noooo Posted by: Harbor Freight Snap On has entered the chat Posted by: rickb223 at September 03, 2025 08:49 PM (6oHLy) I have both. I have a HF 1/4" swivel head ratchet thats a decent copy of my snap-on. Its the only ratchet I really hate to be without, but I was not taking my snap-on version to the shop. They are fully equipped, but don't have that one ratchet. Mine stays in my roller boxes in the garage, so I grabbed the HF one for the shop, and beat on it for the last 5-6 years, and its still like the day I got it. I think it was $12 when I got it, verses the $100+ my snap-on one costs these days. It was so good I grabbed a few more, woodshop, car, etc. My snap-on has a slightly flatter shallower head, but the HF one was a serious surprise. I would have never thought it would survive. And yeah, same with the wrenches, nothing like them at the time. MAC was too square at the edges, craftsman were short and looked and felt like they were built in 1943 russia. I have some other snap-on, like extensions, some pliers, torque wrenches,a few other things. These days though, a lot of good choices out there. "I'm too lazy to look it up, but if the Earth orbited Saturn at the distance of the Moon, what would Earth's tides be like?"
I've been screwing around with this premises, keeping an eye on Grok to see if it screws up (or I do). I think publius's numbers are a bit off but as far as tides go, there would probably be none as the Earth would be rotationally tidally locked and if you assume the Earth to be roughly a sphere, all of the oceans would be consumed in the tidal mass. In other words, if the ocean was liquid, it would be like a teardrop hanging off the Earth in the direction of Saturn. How's that for weird. >> but if the Earth orbited Saturn at the distance of the Moon, what would Earth's tides be like?
That's what fascinated me, and I had Grok running through numbers. It would be very complex. First of all, the Erf would tidally lock quickly, so strong would the tidal field be. But, once it's lock, the tidal bulge distortion is no longer rotating around relative to the body. Tidal bulges would be huge, but locked into radial alignment. Now, if the orbit was perfectly circular, that would be dead constant and stable. If eccentric, and just a little bit, there would be radial flexing, which would drive significant heating of Erf's interior (think Io around Jupiter). And the variation in orbital speed would then cause libration about that radial lock (just as the Moon does now), which would cause angular swaying of the tidal bulges. And then there's the Sun's tidal influences which add another layer. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at September 03, 2025 09:46 PM (w6EFb) 281

The earth's equilibrium shape would different due to the tidal bulges, and no telling what the effect on plate tectonics and continents would be. But, as is, the water would tend to pool at the bulges, making ocean depth deeper on the near and far sides along the bulge axis. Again, no idea about how the continents and crust tectonics would align up with that. Orbital/rotational period would be 21.3 hours. You'd still have solar tidal field rotating around the earth at that frequency. The tidal bulge system is a damped mass-spring type affair, very complex, with different modes and resonances. Depending on the earth's shape, and the shape of the ocean basins, you get resonances there. The solar-heat driven atmospheric tide would be different as well at that 21.3 hour period, and that can interact with the ocean tide as well in complex ways. What be even craz9er would be the day/night cycle if you stood at rhe "shore". Daturn would stay at the same location and the sun would rise and set.
Plus the shadow of Saturn on the rings would be hard to see unless you were a little above or below the orbital plane. It And if you were in the shadow of Saturn, the nightside would be interesting because of all the lightning. It would be around 30 times larger than the Moon appears now. Quite a show! Loved the video of the guy who saved 3 baby barred owls. Does he know his tax dollars are to kill a half million barred owls? Backstory: barred owls are displacing a subspecies of spotted owl in the forests of western OR and WA. That's bad news for gov't busybodies who want to control every aspect of forest management. The spotted owl was ruled "endangered" which gave carte blanche to the green lobby, and they immediately decimated logging and crippled forest management. Small forest towns never recovered. The key is: spotted owls CAN'T come roaring back (their endangered status is the lunch ticket for gov't bureaucrats), NOR can they disappear (for the same reason). BTW, don't worry: spotted owls are common in the US, and it's even a question whether they're a separate species, given they breed commonly with barred owls, making it impossible to know whether the babies are barred or spotted. Regardless, the barred owls are thriving and the spotted may soon be gone from OR & WA, which means panic for the green lobby. Their "final solution": kill 500,000 barred owls. Given it's hard to tell the difference, "just shoot them all." Do a web search: killing 500,000 barred owls
