Hobby Thread - Sept 6, 2025 [Cowboy Rex]

20250830-20250829-IMG_20250829_185705845.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. A spin of the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies (TM) landed on horses.

You knew it had to happen sooner or later...

"Paging Ben Had. Ben Had to the Hobby Thread please. Repeat. Ben Had, please report to the Hobby Thread. Thank you."

I have faith that you can either find something in the content that resonates or contribute your own hobbying interests.

You might be tempted to say "I have no hobbies or interests." Bah. Dig around in the content and soak in the comments. Be curious. Glad you're here. TRex has been detailed elsewhere for dino duty this evening, so you're on your own. Don't make a mess of the place. If there are any questions, Ben Had is in charge.

What are you hobbying?

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. All (legal) hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Pants are optional. Puns are welcome and encouraged.

Play nice. Don't be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

20250830-20250829-IMG_20250829_112335386.jpg

***

For some people, horses are in their blood. They can't imagine anything else other than being fully invested in horses. Show jumping, barrel racing, precision riding, etc. Others are into horse racing. Others enjoy trail riding. A small fraction works with horses on a daily basis on the farm to patrol the perimeter or corral the cows and sheep.

Horses are beautiful animals and have their own personality. A docile horse somehow knows to gently take care of a young and nervous child. A high strung horse knows nothing more than answering the bell when it is time to compete.

Artists, photographers and sculptors have found many different ways to capture the shape of a horse. Horses in full tilt gallop kick up dirt and exert every muscle which makes for a compelling visual. Even better to stand nearby and hear the accompanying soundtrack.

Do you ride horses? If so, what type of riding?

Have you owned horses?

Do you follow horse racing or (legally) bet on the ponies?

Carousel horses are hugely collectible. I think the prices have decreased a bit but they used to go for big bucks.

10 I probably would have enjoyed horse back riding, but it was embarrassing when the horse turned his head and said: "Hey! One at a time. Two of you guys have to get off." (Yes, I am rather stout.)

11 I used to have a "how to draw animals" book from when I was young and laid up from an accident. It's long gone but I wish I still had it. It featured horses a lot. It taught to rough in the major areas of the horse with ellipses and ovals, and then use smooth lines to connect those areas.

Oh, and from the Pet Thread, if that horse is supposed to be quiet but Mayo neighs, does it get the Miracle Whip?

12 Horses are such a huge part of American history.

Think of how many horses in history we know the names of not including race horses. And of course the horse with no name.

18 I really enjoy horseback riding but since I'm not trained, many horse owners don't want me ruining their horses. I suppose they also don't want me or the horse to get injured.

Mr. Bassman and I honeymooned in Mexico where safety is not so highly prized as it is here in the states. We took a horseback tour. I had opportunities to cantor and gallop, but there was another rider in my group whose horse liked to compete with mine but the rider was afraid of faster riding. I would direct my horse away from hers, but she was unable to keep her horse from following mine. So I told the tour guide, who addressed the problem by ... hobbling MY horse. He should have hobbled the other lady's horse instead, but there was a language barrier. Urgh. Ruined my fun.

1. Mount horse. If you're facing the rear, go to step 2

2. Dismount and repeat until you are facing front

This completes your training..

27 I was a rare girl, in that I wasn't horse-crazy as a youngster. Allllll the girls want a horse, right? They're all drawing pictures of horses, wishing they had a horse if they don't, you know. I was indifferent.

28 I will proceed to bore you all with horse stories. The best thing about California horses is that were trained in the Vaquero tradition. A systematic approach to training where a horses mouth is educated to accept pressure and softness. When I moved to Texas not even the King Ranch trained their horses in that fashion.

35 polynikes, the Vaquero tradition made it's way to Texas and is the most widely used method. I combine the Vaquero and Dressage schools of thought so I just have to think where I want a horse to move and it goes there.

38 I aquired a piece of history. I have the original cope and drags (casting halves) for an 1930's art deco horse head. Made in San Francisco. These were cast in 2 parts in aluminum and go for about $500 when you can find one. I have to restore the gating on both and I'm going to use plaster to try and make molds for one or two. I also need to complete my furnace.
Everybody who see them insist they are the finished product and just need to be cut out. Good thing a guy who knew what he was looking at stumbled onto them.

48 My knowledge of riding horses consists of a rocking horse I had when I was about three years old and a merry-go-round at the beach.

At one time I delivered grain to small farms and stables. Hundred pound bags I carried on my shoulder from the truck to the feed bins. I was popular with the horses and other animals since my shirt smelled like lunch.

52 Went from never riding a horse to having one after I moved to Texas in high school. My step dad found an old quarter horse for me to learn to ride and learn to calf rope.

Talk about a war horse, lol. He was pretty set in his ways and pretty much just tolerated me. He was short but stout, and he didn't like to leave the barn or pasture for rides. I used to take him out for rides and on the way back, as soon as he saw the barn, he would take off on a fast trot. I'd put on the brakes but he wouldn't respond. There was no stopping until he was home.

He was barn sour.

57 Rawhide braiding and silver engraving are the artistic equivalent of the Mona Lisa in the horse world.
The hackamore or bosal is a rawhide braided loop that fits on the horses head in the space between the top of the nostril and below the cheek. It's efficacy is determined by the count in the braiding and also the hair rope it is tied with. Horsehair ropes come in mane hair, tail hair or a combination. Each rope performs a different function and feel.

Thank you.
The original way to do these is lost to history. I suspect they were done with sand and a binder as opposed to pressed and pounded mulled sand. If I had a muller I would try it but I don't think the details will keep together. So first I'm going to try plaster (Perfect Cast) for about the first inch then concrete to fill the last 5 or so. The final product is only about 1/4" thick so the metal will have to be 1400°f at least, with that mezmorizing red glow it gets. I also see evidence they were done through 2 pour holes which means I might need two furnaces.

66 The one time I took a riding lesson as an adult was in the '90s. There was a stable in the big city park that apparently handled the police department's mounted detail. Anyway, Miss Linda and I took an hour's lesson. English saddle, which disturbed me; I grew up watching Westerns on TV, and an English saddle looks like a Western saddle melted in the heat.

Everything went fine, except I think Linda's horse didn't take her seriously and ignored a lot of her urging and commands. Still, neither of us got pitched off. We did smell like horse afterward; the people at the cafe we stopped at later were probably giving us a literal stink-eye.

The book implies that the horse was sold to the military so one of the daughters (or sisters) could attend school and have a chance for a better future. The book admits that this is speculation..

71 I look riding lessons as I kid, but then gave it up when I horse bucked me off and stepped on me. What I should have done was get right back on and continued, but I didn't . I had a nice talk with an interesting lady at the 4H & Agricultural Fair ( who teaches riding) and she assured me that they teach adults ,and a man at the John Birch Booth who was originally from Texas said he knows a woman who does barrel racing and she is in her sixties, but I think if I were to take up riding again it would just be with a hopefully placid horse.

78 I love horses, but have minimal experience. Rode them in 4-H camp when I was a teen, then years later ended up managing a horse property where I fed them and let them in/out all day long. Since then, I've done one recreational ride, and I got tossed. Anyway, this thread prompted me to check out horseback riding options for our next trip, thus I am currently making reservations for a horseback tour in Portugal this October. Not sure if my wife will love the idea, but I'm making the res anyway.

80 I attended a military boarding school my senior year of high school in south Texas.

Everyone had to participate in an extracurricular after class. I found my way into the equestrian program and it was pretty awesome.

Every day, 5 days a week I was with my assigned horse (sugar). We developed quite a bond. I could walk into the pasture and he would come right to me. And he got to where it seemed like he could read my mind and respond to commands almost before I could move the reins.

One of the Franklin Sweed foundry was in Independence Oregon, and the last manager of that site was my neighbor. They did cast ironparts and gears there, and they did other stuff as they had the capacity in the heats.
When Cal moved he left me a few oddments, including the pattern for a cast iron dutch oven he had the pattern shop turn out for him. He made ONE dutch oven cast from it, which I think was a shame. (I donated all of the items to the local museum in his name)

However, behind the old foundry there is a giant hill of quartz sand mixed with graphite from the casting. Apparently they needed new sand that had less graphite in it to do new molds so they always had extra. No one has figured out what to do with it yet.

160 My grandpa had horses for us on his farm. We rode constantly and my mother hated it. She hated most animals but was terrified of horses. She told us every time we left for the farm that to be careful that the horses didn't kill us. I did get thrown off and went through a wooden fence. I was unconscious for a while and my mother refused to go along with us to the hospital be cause she told us the horses woukd kill us. She was crazy though.

171 Last time I was on a horse was along the Snake River in Idaho. It was one of those touristy trips where they place skulls and other "authentic" artifacts along the trail. Anyway, the kids were young so they got the smaller horses, and by the time they got to me there was only one horse left. It was the fattest, widest horse in America. When I finally mounted, my legs stuck out nearly perpendicular to the rest of me and immediately cramped up. Guide would tell me things like, 'give him a little poke with your heel' to get him to move. That wasn't happening because my feet were in another galaxy. Good times.

173 My twin brother was a horseman. This was not a gimme, since he was 6'6" and weighed over 300 pounds. He needed a black horse because he was a member of the Black Horse Patrol, a group that rode in formation in parades.

The solution was the internet! Where he found a magnificent bad-tempered beast whom he christened Nero (because it was close to the name he had when he arrived).

This was also how he found the Appaloosa he really loved.

175 I did dressage riding for about ten years (no competing). Usually got the older horses people were willing to share, since I didn't have my own, and as a result learned a lot about "therapy" riding for old creaky horses with stiff joints. There was something very satisfying in doing the stretches and exercises and having the horse give a deep sigh of relief when it *stopped hurting* and it could run like it always wanted to. And I got called in once to help another horse that was recovering from severe tendon inflammation. Because I had ridden him before, when he was well, and he *trusted* me not to hurt him.

It's a heavy responsibility, trust...

188 A somewhat interesting story about horses. I was at my father's summer place in Vermont. He had just purchased an ATV a few weeks prior to my visit. He had actually left to go back home to Massachusetts, and my son and I who were visiting, remained to chill out for another hour or so. I went out to the field to do some target shooting, and a woman comes up 10 mins later on a horse. Sometimes they have equestrian events in the area, and I thought she was going to scold me for scaring horses with gunfire. But no, she was looking for help.

She and a friend were riding, and they got off the horses because one horse was older and it was a rocky part of the trail. One woman was standing behind the horse and the two horses walking side by side. For some reason this bothered one horse who kicked out and tagged the woman behind it in the ribs.

They couldn't get an ambulance up the trail and were looking for anyone in the area with an ATV. My father had just bought it and had she come by any later would have missed us.

I took the ATV to where the accident happened. They got the woman down to the ambulance. She wasn't seriously hurt but did learn a lesson about where to walk around horses

The violent animal who killed a defenseless woman on the Charlotte light rail was a fare-skipper. He didn’t pay for that ride.

In this case, it shows how cracking down on ‘small’ crimes also prevents ‘big’ crimes as criminality escalates

299 I am sad tonight. Yesterday was the 53rd anniversary of the murder of 11 Israelis by Pali terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Last night and tonight I watched two films about the tragedy. "September 5," is a 2024 dramatization of the ABC Olympic broadcast team's work to make some sense of events as they happened, both for themselves and their US audience. Chilling. The other is a 1999 documentary, "One Day in September."

I don't recall watching the events live from Munich that day. I never read much about the tragedy. I learned a lot from those films. The Germans were totally inept. At that time no police or soldiers in Bavaria or Germany had any counter-terror or hostage rescue training. Skilled and trained counter-terrorist units may or may not have saved all or some of the nine Israelis not immediately killed and taken with their captors to a Munich airport. There German police lay in ambush. The result was a complete fiasco.

I don't know how accurate the dramatization is of the ABC control room team, its local help, and the in-Munich network managers. It is excellent story-telling; I enjoyed it.

I highly recommend both. RIP to the 11 murdered Israelis.

300 My stepbrother married into a "Horse Family" large stable, indoor and outdoor arenas, one of the sisters is an Olympic medalist...they FLY their horses across the USA, to south america and to Europe. Every year I find someone's kid or grandkid and "sponsor" them to 5 riding lessons. This year it isn't a kid...but rather the home care nurse who came and changed my dressings for several months after cancer surgery. I rode a bit in Texas as a young man, neighbors had ranches and "rough horses" Not today's modern trained style of "Seat", it was more yanking reins and kicking ribs, staying on when bucked, and trying to keep from getting rubbed off on mesquite trees. But cows still moved when you got behind them, and would gather together to be brought in a couple times a year....if you didn't try to push them too fast. Then we discovered dirt bikes, and that seemed easier, more fun. I kind of regret it now. A couple of years ago , when we sold the Farm I was negotiating to buy a horse just before the MoMe, the plan was to pick it up near ElPaso, either just before the meet up...then drive back to the midwest. The deal didn't work out, couldn't get the price right.

301 I had a friend, recently deceased, who, as a Marine during the Korean Police.Action, "liberated" an obviously Communist mule.
He decided it would be a great way to carry ammo and such for his squad.
He rigged a pack system out of web gear and loaded the mule.
He said everything was going fine until they were crossing a dry creek bed and they got hit with a mortar barrage.
The mule began bucking, running, and kicking spreading the squads extra ammo all over the place.
I told him about the book on Sgt. Reckless.
He had never heard about Sgt Reckless, so I bought him the book.

302 my brother (rip) started with thoroughbreds, then later kept tennessee walkers. towards the end he stopped riding, so i asked him why he still maintained them. he said, "when i sit at the kitchen table with my morning coffee i like the look of them grazing in the pasture.
some years later he wound up with miniature horses. one morning i asked him "when you're enjoying your coffee and looking out at the horses in the field... do they seem farther away?"
he was not pleased.
