[Top photo: Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park, West Virginia]![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At Naval Support Activity Crane, near Bloomington, Indiana, the U.S. Navy maintains "Constitution Grove," where a forest of white oaks are grown for the sole purpose of restoring and refitting the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned vessel still sailing (the UK's HMS Victory is older than the Constitution, but remains in drydock). The Constitution is the last of the remaining original six frigates authorized by Congress in 1794. The other five were broken up or captured by the mid-1800s. The Constitution survived because its victory over Guerriere was so resounding that keeping her together remained popular among citizens for decades. She became a training ship for midshipmen at the Naval Academy during the Civil War and, after that, became a notable ship used for ceremonial purposes before being converted into a museum ship in 1907. In 1997, in a celebration of its bicentennial, the Constitution underwent a complete refit and sailed on its own power to ports around the United States. The refitting of a 200-year-old ship was not an easy task. There aren't a lot of 200-year-old white oak trees lying around. That's why the U.S. Navy had the foresight to grow them. ![]() Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (Belize) Chinoike Jigoku (Japan) Cape Matapan Caves (Greece) Acheron River (Greece) Fengdu Ghost City (China) Masaya Volcano (Nicaragua) The Ploutonion (Turkey) Houska Castle (Czech Republic) Mount Osore (Japan) Anybody been to any of these places? Hey, I had an aggravating thing today. I am selling a small lot that my mother owned in another state so I am doing it by courier. Anyways, I received the Title Deed and other forms for the sale and I had to sign and be notarized. No problem I thinks, go to one of my banks, wait almost an hour for the notary, and he looks at the papers and says that he can't notarize real estate stuff. I had to rush over to my old real estate lawyers office to get them to do it.

However comma I have to wonder why they seem to want to congregate right around my camp. There are a million acres for them to frolic around in, and I can’t see why any particular blade of grass is more scrumptious than another. I did discover “Go on, Git!!” and “Yaa!!”while swinging a stick works pretty good to get them to skedaddle. They can be quiet when they want to, believe it or not. 1200 pounds of ‘em. I’ll open up the curtains and all there is in the window is Cow. &$@!!! Go outside and there’s a whole Cattle Congress. Pittsburgh seems to be a happenin' place.
I went to a Marshall Tucker concert in college with my posse of friends (5 boys and sometimes another girl who lived in the fourplex...they were her friends but also became mine). I don't remember much but I was there. Which is the theme to many college concerts. Flashes of memory and I had fun. I found an old email from 2007 to one of my brothers. An angry email from FL about Hispanics stealing coconuts from our trees. A new home had been built next to us and my first introduction to illegals on their new roof. I also had a skirmish with one who stole water from my casa. Anyway, in the email to my brother (my entire family are used to my emails), the doorbell rang and a young man who did not speak English wanted my coconuts. I told him NO (I said he pantomimed he wanted to either cut the coconuts or behead me, but without a machete). My husband wandered up, saw my laser glare and backed me up with a manly no. Once we closed the door he said I was "not acting very Christian." I said, "Where in the Bible does it say I have to give illegals my coconuts?" I ended the email saying I had a jab at illegals. No longer in FL but feel the same. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at September 03, 2025 10:38 PM (6PCLE) 96

NASA was actually pretty smart when they put out bids for proposal. Nobody was quite sure what the designs would end up, they gave wide parameters of what they wanted to do.
So there are some really cool mockups from different aerospace companies. Tracked vehicles for the lunar surface, and big huge rockets, spinning wheel space stations, really cool drawings right out of Sci-Fi. For a little while they envisioned sending a single astronaut down from lunar orbit via a kind of open platform while wearing a space suit. Grumman got the LEM contract because they had spent a few years previous and their own money on how they might do it, they were way ahead of anyone else. But they had a hell of a time making it work. It was a close run thing. Kelly’s book is excellent. Posted by: Common Tater at September 03, 2025 10:47 PM (37PXt) 116

Lignum vitae Wiki - The belaying pins and deadeyes aboard USS Constitution and many other sailing ships were made from lignum vitae. Due to its density and natural oils, they rarely require replacement, despite the severity of typical marine weathering conditions, and also resist jamming in their mortise holes. The sheaves of blocks on sailing vessels were made of lignum vitae until the introduction of modern synthetics. ... and bearings in early propeller driven ships etc. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 03, 2025 11:38 PM (/lPRQ) 226

Posted by: Currituck Chuck at September 03, 2025 11:39 PM (G5+As) When in high school and gas was cheap, we'd pile in my VW Squareback, with the good stereo, and we'd drive to Knotts Island from Norfolk, drinking beer when we got past Pungo. We'd cross the state line, take a piss, and come back home. Later, an ex-BiL's brother was a Methodist preacher on Knotts Island. It was part of Virginia's domain/whatever and it was the furthest place their bishop could send him to get him out of the way. He was an ass. Good evening, good people, from the Adirondacks. Leaf season begins soon, a time that may make you cringe at the thought of removal. This depends on how many oak +red maples you have on your lawn area. I have 11 mature oaks plus 5 maples to deal with. Town won't pick up in my area and the recycling center stopped taking leaves last year. Someone introduced (by accident) the emerald ash borer and the state went nuts and shut it all down. So now there's a commercial outfit that picks up for $1.50 per bag. Just so you know, at my place it runs 75/85 35 gallon bags that I deal with. From the Earth as a moon of Saturn thought experiment from last thread. We imagine this at the Erf-Saturn system at current earth orbital distance, with earth-Saturn distance at current Earth-Moon radius. I got to wondering about long-term stability of that in the solar system. The Earth-Saturn system itself (with just Earth as a moon) would be quite stable. However, it would perturb the other inner planets significantly. Venus orbit would get much eccentric and the orbital inclination would swing much wider. It would remain bound and stable. Mercury, however, could become much more unstable, and potentially crash into the Sun or Venus. Mars orbit would perturbed as well. Many comments missed but if you can't find coffee in Utah that's sad. What makes me laugh is all the Mormon chickies who get custom sodas so they can have that Starbucks experience. I love Mormons but they are a weird bunch.

Tree rats make sure to plant walnuts in every crevice around here. I pull dozens of saplings each spring and always miss a few, that I must dig out later. Ugh!
If that tree wasn't in a good place, I'd get it removed too. It's just too damned hot here in summer, to not have the shade. Posted by: JQ at September 04, 2025 02:49 AM (rdVOm) 321
Down to only 5 trees now, with walnut being the messiest, one hornbeam, one maple, two dogwoods.
Have lost 2 cherry, 3 apple, 2 elm due to disease, death, or just PITA removal. Posted by: JQ at September 04, 2025 02:16 AM (rdVOm) Let's see.... I think I'm at 13 trees total, with one maple for sure needing to be taken out by the city next year. Two walnuts got semi-professional "haircuts" after the storm and might limp on for a while until I can get the professional (who trained the semi-professional) to take them down. I hate losing my trees like this, but they all die at some point. Posted by: pookysgirl, taking a break at September 04, 2025 03:32 AM (9LXqq) 322
One thing we've learned from Twitter: We all need donkeys... And little skateboards for our turtles.
