Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Overnight Open Thread - September 1, 2025 [Doof]![]() What Is This Holiday Anyway? History of Labor Day Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.McGuire v. Maguire: Who Founded Labor Day? ![]() Who first proposed the holiday for workers? It’s not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title. Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes" to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, New Jersey, proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. According to the New Jersey Historical Society, after President Cleveland signed the law creating a national Labor Day, the Paterson Morning Call published an opinion piece stating that "the souvenir pen should go to Alderman Matthew Maguire of this city, who is the undisputed author of Labor Day as a holiday." Both Maguire and McGuire attended the country’s first Labor Day parade in New York City that year.Read more at the link No single job suits all of us, but many of the best ones have a few attributes in common: They pay well, challenge us year after year, match our talents and skills, aren't too stressful, offer room to advance throughout our careers, and provide a satisfying work-life balance. In the 90's the nursing director of the med center asked a few of us RN's with BSN if we were interested in a master's degree. They'd pay and you had to work a certain amt of years.
I had two toddlers and said no, thank you, as it would have meant a two hour commute twice a week and my husband was often out of town. Plus studying while chimps slept. I needed some peace and quiet during those precious hours. I figured I was crazy enough, thanks, juggling what I had and only worked Saturday's. Then weekends. Then part time once they got into elementary school. The others in the group all became ARNP's or directors of floors in two years. No regrets. I mean, who would want to pass up your baby son giving the fish a floride treatment as the aquarium was in their bathroom? Or cutting his hair (blonde curls) off and stuffing them in his shoe? Current three, based on tenure with me: the 2008, bought in 2011 as government surplus, ex RCMP dog wagon. The '99 1500, bought in Arizona in 2021, IIRC, and the one that received the transplant. And the '99 2500 heavy-duty, with the 7-liter big block in it., bought in 2023 in Utah to get me home after the other '99 expired on the road. The worst jobs I ever had in college were these two. I lasted about 2wks in each:
1) Cleaning out test tubes...I guess rat brains. Some sort of neurology lab with white mice and electrodes on their shaved heads. I would be the only human, I think, in the building in late afternoons. I was ripe for a serial killer. And a real one was nearby. 2) Same university: dragging a film projector around to show films in classes. Not bad and I got to watch a film and see boys who never asked me out. Then one stormy day (making that part up), a film started burning in the projector and the film then shot around until I did emergent measures. I unplugged it and wheeled it out of class to the film dept without saying a word to anyone. Like it was a normal day. No one taught me how to splice and I had enough. Finally I was called the next semester to work in the university health clinic. Now we were onto something that might help my degree! Life got a lot better! Most psychiatrists nowadays do not do counseling and therapy. They only do 15-minute sessions for medication prescriptions after the most basic verbal 'how are you feeling' assessments.
Psychologists now do the bulk of one-hour talk therapy sessions. Because medical insurance wants to cut costs - not pay the freight for hourly sessions with much more expensive MD psychiatrists. Posted by: Gref at September 01, 2025 10:41 PM (aBgBM) 124

Used to work in a boat yard that repaired and built barges. The damaged barges would be brought up and they'd sink in the creek until they were ready to work on them. The barges would be pumped out and brought onto a drydock when they were ready . A hole would be cut in the bottom of the barge to drain the water that remained onto the drydock. Before that we'd have to climb into the holds and use buckets to clear out eels and cat fish , bullheads, because if they were there when the water was drained they'd die and the smell would be so bad you couldn't work. Hot sweaty and dangerous

After working railroad track demolition for Amtrak a couple summers for college money I was motivated to pursue a career in something that didn't include 4:30 am daily commutes, 120 degree working conditions, tossing 75 lb railroad ties, and creosote burns up and down my arms. On a positive note, the prison work release guys were entertaining as hell. They used to set off fire crackers every time the fat ass Union guys showed up just to watch them dive for cover. I thought I'd see more of the engineering fields, especially the core, classic fields of chemical and civil, along with electrical and mechanical which were on the list. I graduated with a lowly B.S, in Materials Engineering specializing in Metallic Materials. I was never without a job except for six weeks in 1982, and made what I think was pretty exceptional money.
As a career field, engineering in general doesn't get its due from the media or culture. Working in manufacturing, I at times felt like a Dr making rounds in a hospital as I addressed various issues on the floor. Over the years I saw plenty of a-hole managers - MBAs and HR Karen's were the worst until the DEI crowd showed up. But but but I had the pleasure of seeing some of them go down in flames, including being in the room ( cowering under my desk) when Security came and frog-marched one insidious crazy jerk manager off the premises... All in all it was a good life and I miss it still. Photograph: This iconic photograph captures construction workers during the building of the Empire State Building in New York City.
The image, often misidentified as "Lunch atop a Skyscraper," depicts ironworkers guiding a steel beam into place, not eating lunch. The photograph was taken by Lewis Hine in 1931, during the construction of the Empire State Building. It symbolizes the spirit of American industry and the daring of the workers who built the city's towering landmarks. Btw, "OSHA, our savior has arrived!" was what was yelled as a greeting at some scum bag worksites, sometimes by management but sometimes by union reps. Depended who was winning on a particular day. Interstate batteries are good but don't last that much longer than AutoZone batts. Years ago it was Die Hards but that's long gone. Bat form the lawn tractor is close to 50 from Walmart. Batteries for yard equipment and motorcycles lead a tough life. Wintering over can be real hard on them, and lawn tractors usually don't have real decent voltage regulator in the charging system. Lots of vibration, too.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 02, 2025 01:36 AM (os5gg) I get about 5 years out of harley battery. I keep them on trickle chargers over the winter. The main thing with the harley is to fully charge a new battery before you put it in. The charging system is good, they usually charge at 13.5 volts, but for some reason if the battery isn't fully charged they die fast. They just never charge to where they need to be. If you charge them up first, there's never a problem. People come in with dead new batteries a good amount of time and its always the same. I ask if they charged it first. Oh no, they told at the store it was charged. No, no, they are never charged. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 02, 2025 01:42 AM (snZF9) 252
Camper is currently getting its annual service and a furniture upgrade. We hope to do some traveling later in the fall. Wife has been kind of preoccupied with her elderly mother.
I wish mother in law was doing better. She was always a hoot to take on road trips...I think she'd like the camper life. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at September 02, 2025 01:39 AM (QGaXH) Friend of mine is currently dealing with that. His 94 year old Mom is in hospital with pneumonia, and some sort of stomach bug. But she is in good spirits. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 02, 2025 01:42 AM (os5gg) 253

Hubby had hair down to his ass... clean. Kept it out of the way at work. Always looked nice, until he got sick & most of it fell out. It's growing back, and is finally longer than my own again, but still looks better than bro's.
Lil bro? Dirty hair. Greasy and gross. Doesn't even comb it sometimes. Scroungy looking, in general. Posted by: JQ at September 02, 2025 01:44 AM (rdVOm) 255
Where the deer and the antelope play -
The antelope in the verse is the antelope jackrabbit, the largest rabbit in the Western Hemisphere. There are, in fact, no antelope antelopes in North America, although the pronghorn is sometimes called the American antelope. Nonetheless, the antelope of the song are merely rabbits, albeit large jackrabbits. Here’s a National Park Service write up about the antelope jackrabbit: https://is.gd/BVObN5 Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at September 02, 2025 01:48 AM (Wj1DV) 256

funny how something as silly as a hair style, can somehow make you others judge you as less, than you are.
Posted by: Romeo13 at September 02, 2025 01:26 AM (mP0Kj) Dealt with it my whole life. Now you know the key to my attitude. I just don't give a fuck. I remember years ago for a few months I took a job at a really high end harley shop JUST to see how these fancy places operate. No different, just higher prices. The owner was a frigging pod. During the "interview" I told him my background, which was way more technical than his own, which he was happy about. Then he asked if I would think about cutting my hair because "it might be scary" to some of the customers. I said flat out, its harleys, not a poodle wash, and if your customers are scared by my hair I don't want to work on those undeserving homo's bikes anyway, so count me out. I stood up to walk out and he says well its not a requirement. I lasted 3 months. the place was silly. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at September 02, 2025 01:53 AM (snZF9) 260

Do modern Harleys have a voltmeter or ammeter? I think some of the vintage ones had ammeters, right?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 02, 2025 01:44 AM (os5gg) The really old ones, like from the 1920s or 30s had ammeters. Eventually they went away and you just had an idiot light. Usually that was bikes with generators. When they went to alternators the bikes had nothing, no gauge or idiot light. The big touring bikes eventually started getting volt meters. I was driving thru the northern Nevada desert one night and the jackrabbits were so thick and large I thought we had an alien invasion. I didn't want to hit them in my vehicle because it would have been totalled and I'd be stranded in no-man's land.

In graduate school, I taught two sections of physics for nursing students: there was a lot of emphasis on linear fluid flow, Bernoulli’s principle, conservation of energy applied to fluids, etc. I had one section in the morning and the other in the afternoon. One was a delight to teach; the other was a bear! I found afterwards that a “queen bee” type in one class had poisoned the attitudes of her fellow students (all women) because I had long hair and looked “unprofessional”. This was in the student evaluations at the end of term. Of course I read them after both classes were over. Frankly, at the time, I looked like I could have been in ZZ Top. But I had no problems with that other class. I kept my long hair until I was out of grad school with my doctorate and looking for a job. I cut my hair short, and trimmed my beard and mustache (you can have a beard in academia, nobody cares). I did wind up with an NRL postdoc, but I’m not sure the trim appearance was make or break for it. The NRL postdoc and the work I did for the Navy did lead to a tenure-track job at my university, so I’m not complaining.

Mines pretty frigging long. The chick who cuts it is a riot. She'll look at it and say yeah not dude enough, too neat. I watch her technique. She gets it all even using a series of moves I can't explain, then holds it so the ends are pointing up, then she stabs down at it with her scissors to roughen the cut. I don't even ask, I just pay her. lol
