Gun Thread: End of August Edition!

083125 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the end of August? Know what happens after August? September! And after September? The TXMoMe! Beginning next week we'll have exciting details on our get-together in Texas, so stay tuned!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Providing content with very little personal effort has long been a guiding principle of mine when creating the weekly Gun Thread. Last week it dawned on me that I could reuse material from the Mid-Range Shooting Clinic syllabus, so here is some more of that!

Rifle Zero

So what is zeroing a rifle? Simply put, it's adjusting the sights or optical reticle so it aligns exactly with the bullet impact on target at a specific distance with zero wind and elevation. For the purpose of this discussion I will refer from here on out to optics although the concepts are mostly the same with iron sights.

Every single rifle has to be zeroed if you want to stand much of a chance of hitting a target beyond about 100 yards or so. With changes in velocity and bullet weight, it's very easy for the ballistics to vary to such a degree that a non-zeroed rifle will miss even inside that distance. Every single time you change ammunition, you must re-zero your rifle. You may get lucky and be somewhere on target close in, but the results will only get uglier the farther out you go. A shooter with a non-zeroed rifle stands little chance of hitting a target beyond a couple of hundred yards. It is absolutely essential the scope reticle is pointing to the exact same place as the bullet is going, or you might as well be shooting without sights at all, and you're probably just wasting your ammunition. What is the point of carefully selecting a target through the scope when your rifle barrel is pointing somewhere else?

This is why I spend so much time harping on consistency in ammunition. Inconsistent ammunition, with respect to either velocity or bullet weight, is the same as changing to different ammunition every time you chamber a round. If you know the weight of the bullet and its velocity leaving the barrel you can compute a ballistic trajectory. Alter either variable, and the bullet goes somewhere else. No exceptions. Once again, changing ammo will change the zero. Atmospherics also begin to influence the equation at greater distances, but for now let's stick with the basics.

The good news is that zeroing a rifle is no big deal and is not hard to do. I zero my rifles at 100 yards because I mostly shoot at fixed distances and that keeps the math simple, but it's not uncommon for hunters to zero their rifles at 200 yards or some other distance if that better suits their purpose. Again, all you are doing in the zeroing process is moving the reticle inside the scope so at zero elevation and zero windage indicated, it matches the point of bullet impact at a fixed distance, in this case, 100 yards.

So what is required? A sturdy bench, some sandbags or other shooting rest, a spotting scope and a sighting target. I use pre-printed targets with one-inch grid squares, but that isn't even completely necessary. A blank sheet of paper with an aiming dot will work fine. You can even zero a gun without a bench or sandbags, but you need an absolutely stable platform to work from so small movements in your gear and set up do not affect the point of aim.

The process is simple. With an already fouled barrel, choose a calm day, set up your stuff, and as carefully as possible take a shot at the target. An assistant is helpful to spot impacts landing off the target. Let's say you're lucky and hit the target but the bullet impacts right 3 inches and high 2 inches from the aim point. I like to take a second shot at this point to validate the first. All things being equal, the difference in the two impacts should be small, ideally in the same hole, but at least making some sort of group. For argument's sake, say they're pretty close; almost touching, which tells you your setup and ammo consistency is good. All you need to do now is dial down 2 inches and left 3 inches and you should be in the center. My rifle scopes all use the minute-of-angle (MOA) convention, so at 100 yards it would be down 2 MOA and left 3 MOA. Take a third shot and observe the results. Hopefully you're in the center, but if the impact is wandering around, you need to begin investigating possible causes like goofy ammo or stability and marksmanship problems. Once the bullets are going to where the reticle is pointing, loosen the screws on the scope turrets, turn the caps to read zero for both elevation and windage, tighten them back up and you're done.

Below is a WeaselAcres video which includes the process for our visual learners.

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

40 Weasel, no shooting this weekend b/c of the crowds at my local range. Any thoughts about ported barrel revolvers? My LGS had nearly new (it still has the bar code hang tag on the trigger guard) Colt Kodiak for $1,250 ($1,325 out the door price), that was too tempting for me to pass up. That's pretty deeply discounted from its $1,799 MSRP. The sales guy said that the previous owner didn't like the recoil from the .44 Magnum rounds. Do you think that ported barrels are effective reducing muzzle rise? Does the ported barrel make the revolver more manageable? .44 Magnum out of a 4.25" barrel has a reputation for being quite a handful. For now, I plan on sticking w/ .44 Specials when I try shooting this beast.

Thanks again, Weasel!

No range report this weekend. We were babysitting 90 lbs of shag rug masquerading as a dog. Dog had the energy of a chihuahua on crack. But an incredibly sweet and friendly demeanor.

However, did manage to clean both rifles and note it on the round count sheet. (I've no idea if I'm getting way to OCD on the target rifles or not)

Also got a bunch of brass ready for powder and bullets. So, while no actual range time was involved, range time prep did take place.

53 For hunters, as Weasel alluded, there is another concept, that of Maximum Point Blank Range (MBPR)

Using deer as an example, the vital zone of deer is roughly 8 inches. There are calculators that you can use to determine your zero distance. Let's say that the results say you should zero your rifle at 250 yards, and that the MPBR is 300 yards.

What this means is that if you aim at the center of the vital zone of a deer at any range between 0 and 300 yards, you will hit the vital zone. You do not need to worry about any bullet drop or holding over if the animal is within the MPBR.

Another way of thinking about this is to visualize shooting with your barrel centered inside an imaginary pipe. The size of the target determines the size of the pipe (8" in the deer example). The maximum point blank range is the furthest distance at which a bullet fired from a rifle will stay inside the pipe without hitting the top or the bottom.

Posted by: RI Red at August 31, 2025 07:43 PM (vY9Lp)

91 Do you think that ported barrels are effective reducing muzzle rise? Does the ported barrel make the revolver more manageable? .44 Magnum out of a 4.25" barrel has a reputation for being quite a handful. For now, I plan on sticking w/ .44 Specials when I try shooting this beast.
Posted by: Ed L at August 31, 2025 07:18 PM

Not Weasel, but I have a small amount of relevant experience.

S&W came out with a limited run 657 (.41 Mag) with unfluted cylinders and a 6" barrel. I bought two, and sent one off to Magna-Port, which was the hot new porting for revolvers. (The used EDM to cut trapezodial ports near the end of the barrel, 2 on each side in this case.)

When it was returned, out to the range! Shooting one, then the other two-handed showed no discernable difference. The only way I detected a difference was to put the ported one in my left (non-dominant) hand, the non-ported in the right, and shoot the both simultaneously single-action, and the difference was there, but not much.

My verdict, don't bother.

94 Two pals took turns shooting each other in the head with a rifle while wearing kevlar helmets inside a home — with one man now being charged with the other’s murder, according to authorities.

Sean O’Donnell, 37, was taken into custody at his home in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 17, in connection to the shooting death of Aaron Prout, 34, a native of the UK, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

"Hard to believe two, so-called friends, would take turns shooting at each other wearing a kevlar helmet, inside a house in a residential neighborhood, while using a rifle,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote.

Howdy sharon, glad you are feeling better!

I have had a Hi-Point JHP in .45 for about 10 years when Cabela's had a ridiculous special price.

It is a beast on weight, but that makes it pretty low recoil to me. (However, in real life I may be a couple of sizes larger than you.) It is my "truck gun" so I always have it with me on the road, working at the farm, etc.

I have never had a single problem with the gun. However, I have twice had gun noobs shoot it and manage to get a FTE. (Maybe limp-wristing because they were worried about the .45 boom?)

I consider Hi-Points to be a good "value" gun. They are usually (always?) blow-back operated so they will be heavier than the more typical operation.

That may make less felt recoil? If you want to shoot snappy +P 9mm rounds it may be a perfect choice. Otherwise, in my (non-expert) opinion you might enjoy an alternate more.

Good to hear that you're improving, Sharon!
About the Yeet Cannon, the main complaints I've heard are 1) the ergonomics, and 2) it's a High Point. Which means that if you decide to sell it, it might be difficult to find a buyer for it used. Will it get the job done? Absolutely. But for a couple hundred more, you can get something with better, proven ergonomics. Examples include the Girsan High Power clone or Tisas/Rock Island 1911 clone.

No, and the 4+ inch barrel will have less of a lever-arm than a 6". A good set of stocks will do more for shooting comfort than a comp, I suspect.

I have a 629 Mountain Gun in .44M, and it's shootable with it's Hogues. I probably wouldn't enjoy 200+ round sessions, but 50 is eminently doable.

I'm intrigued by the new run(s) of Mountain Guns. I deeply regret not getting one in .357 back in the day; one of the new ones (when they finally aren't unobtainium) may find its way home.

Crap! I asked, hoping it was minor and you had a pretty encouraging report and a funny story.

Sounds like you truly were a projectile.

My wife was recently debilitated by a broken wrist that required a plate to repair. She feels bad calling me to move stuff, but I tell her not to worry about it because her messing up a surgery recovery is a much worse option.

I hope you can repair and heal very well and get back close to your normal operations in the not too distant future.

Prayers sent.

Walkers are actually the best thing to use right now. It keeps you from favoring one side. It makes you walk intentionally. You have to go slow and because both your hands/arms are full you can’t do stupid shit. If your Walker is fit correctly, you walk upright.

Use the damn thing.

Some good ones I can reco:

191 Weasel, your thoughts about backup iron sights in addition to any optics on the rifle? I still zero backup irons in addition to any optics because my Army training says you can't always count on your optics (batteries run low, glass gets damaged, etc.). But I see increasing numbers of new rifles come w/o any irons at all, leaving it up to the users to mount backup iron sights. I can see where this would save time and $$, but I can still hear the marksmanship training NCOs telling us that you never know when your optics will fail you.

So you have *all* of the .41 Mag 'holes' checked?

Going on an AR, any gas block length concerns (meaning can you go 20" or longer)? You're going to want to go heavy, so fast twist.

Too much stuff going on in an AR to be really Long-Range.

I stopped missing work the afternoon of my last day, on my way home.

Actually that's not true. I stopped caring at all about work (while still doing my job, somehow) during the Sniffle Scare, when my long-time employer threatened me with termination if I didn't take the clot shot. And when I saw how completely they had bought into the Big Lie, I lost all respect for the supposedly learned and reasoning people around me.

If cost is no object, go w/ H&K. They're offering 16" and 11" MR556A4 uppers for a MILSPEC lower for $2,179. Their Labor Day sale gives you a 10% discount on that. The primary plus for H&K is that they will give you a lifetime guarantee of 1 MOA accuracy (or better) on their barrels. If it slips to 2 MOA, H&K says they'll replace it for free. The 9 Hole Reviews guys hit targets at 800 yards with a 16" barreled MR 556A4 using 77 grain IMI surplus ammo. That's well beyond what you'd expect 5.56mm to reach.

256 Reading your comment above Pete Bog, did they use Rockset or locktite. Locktite Green is at the top of the temp scale but it starts deteriorating at 450 to 500 F. Been out of building rifles a while but I think a good gunsmith can remove that flashider unless they tack welded it with a blind pin or silver soldered it.

Gun performs well if I give it a firm grip. I had a glorious 1 hole group and then...twitched and threw a flyer. Argh!

Had to replace battery on the red dot for the first time. Good run, almost a year of heavy use with brightness turned up a touch. Good gun.

As fall beckons, I may go back to my PSA Dagger as it fits my hand well and I shoot it well. Mostly. At least it's out performed more expensive guns at IDPA.

The USMC favored Black Hills MK 262 for long range applications. This ammo uses 77 grain Sierra Match King bullets on a 5.56mm NATO case. And it's not cheap - SG Ammo has it in a 460 round case at $774.50 ($1.67 per round). Are you sure this is the sandbox you want to play in?

I suppose I'm a "serious" competitive shooter, just not a particularly good one. Although they reserve spots in the USPSA and IPSC national championships for people based on performance, a bunch of the spots are open for anyone who wants to sign up. 90% of life is just showing up, so that's my strategy. Unfortunately, the other 110% is fundamentals. Still working on that.

267 Re cleaning the 1866.
They are really pretty simple mechanisms, the biggest problem being that you really need gunsmith screwdrivers. YouTube has some solid videos on the subject. I cleaned up the working surfaces a bit and installed better lever and lifter springs and a short stroke kit myself. I now keep a couple of the loading gates in stock, as they are prone to breaking.
If you think about it, they had to be fairly easy to clean - originally made for black powder rounds and that stuff is very dirty.

303 I used to use Loctite to glue keys in electric motors for pinspotters.

306 Weasel, I can understand. I had to use those video editors for work aka online instructional videos for classes and for distance learning projects. Using Linux is what caused me to try OpenShot way back 8 years ago and it has improved since then.

Camtasia was learned for a grant program for instructional videos. Powerful but cranky. Power Director I used on Windows for shorts for online COVID era classes. Easiest to use simply from a time perspective. My version is circa 2022 or so.

307 274 MAE, curious about the IMI carry load. Any reason not Federal or Winchester?
Posted by: whig's phone at August 31, 2025 09:14 PM (ctrM5)

Mostly it comes down to price. I can buy 1k rounds of JHP for the price of 500 rounds of Federal.

Federal is really good, I love the HST but...it ain't cheap. But I can buy, carry and use the IMI stuff and be sure of its reliability and POI.

309 I've used Locktite Green with retention screws to remount open barrel sights on Mausers. Easier than floating them in solf solder as Mausers did it.
