Posted by: BifBewalski - at August 29, 2025 10:06 PM (QVmho) I blew up a paper wasp nest once. About the size of a football, on the back fence. I rolled up black powder in many, many layers of newspaper, tucking the ends in as I rolled, until I had nice big cannon cracker. Had a length of underwater fuse in it. Waited until dusk, stuffed the cracker into the hole in the base of the nest, and lit the fuse. A furious buzzing ensued, followed by an earth-shattering Kaboom! And the air was filled by a flurry of shredded newsprint, shredded wasp nest, and shredded wasp wings. Like a confetti storm, it was. Let folks know where you want to meet. A restaurant, a state park, a truck stop. No one cares. Ask folks to bring snacks and beverages and themselves. Sit. Chat. Laugh. Eat. If you haven't read it, and at the risk of crossing beams with the book thread, published in 1973: "The Camp of the Saints (French: Le Camp des Saints) is a 1973 French dystopian fiction novel by author and explorer Jean Raspail. A speculative fictional account, it depicts the destruction of Western civilization through Third World mass immigration to France and the Western world. Almost 40 years after its initial publication, the novel returned to the bestseller list in 2011. It was first published in French in 1973 by Éditions Robert Laffont. It was translated into English by Norman Shapiro, and first published in English by Scribner in 1975." Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 29, 2025 10:40 PM (XeU6L) 81

France is looking to the IMF for a bail out. Germany is closing manufacturing plants and has a chancellor who has the sturdy inner core of a soft boiled egg. Holland's ruling coalition collapsed and the caretaker government is doing nothing until October. Spain's Prime Minister is under fire for corruption scandals about him and his wife. Bosnia is still in crisis, Romania figured out that there were no outside influences in the last election so the do-over was just because the EU said so, and pretty much every EU country has started capital controls on cash.

In two years you're going to lose your housing because you depend on the government to help pay your way.
Two years too late you will become independent and will learn the ways of the world. If your parents had taught you independence or how to become a mature woman you would now have a choice between a career or marriage, where you would be independent in your responsibilities as woman of the house and dependent on your husband to fulfill his responsibilities as man of the house. However, you have achieved neither therefore you will always be an obnoxious burden wherever you go. _when the government stops paying people not to work our society and economy will move toward equilibrium Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 29, 2025 10:57 PM (7OHl1) 113

I had a snort laugh for the President's and JFK. I know this is really bad of me.
I hate yellow jackets and am allergic. One chased me inside today. Or it might have been a bee, but it got all weird with me on the deck for no reason. I am sending my faithful husband out tomorrow to see what that is about. It is my deck. I will always remember the day Princess Diana died because I was up with icepacks, on a yellow jacket sting on my thigh. Gorked out on Benadryl and Advil. It flew up my maxi dress and stung me on my thigh. I got it back, however, running down the hall screaming for ice, etc to my husband. He found it concussed on the floor of our bedroom and killed it for me. I had him sleep in the guestroom in the event I died during the night and needed 911 (demonstrated stridor breathing of anaphalaxis). I did not die but, well, Princess Di did. I woke him to tell him and he had the nerve to tell me that was really sad but he did not care. Obviously I did not die, either. Shit. I meant the opposite.
Ground hornets are twice the bastards yellow jackets are. Posted by: nurse ratched Consider both "yellow jackets ". The smaller, less aggressive ones that build open faced honeycomb nests are P.dominulus, the European paper wasp. The larger, more aggressive ones that make their nests in the ground are P.aurifer, the Golden paper wasp. The Golden is also a prime predator of the Anobiidae beetle family which can devastate stands of Douglas Fir. Multiple times over the last 20 years Boise Cascade and Washington DNR have dumped several million of those nasty bastards in our area. They don't announce it. We have them every year but the years when they've been dumped they were every where. Propane weed burner is a good weapon of mass destruction. It could have been a bee on the deck and thirsty for my wine vs a yellow jacket. I could not tell as it got very friendly and I fled inside. It was acting peculiar and I have not been out there in a week. There could be a nest. All I wanted to do was look at my mountain and have a glass of wine. On this current leg of the Milankovich obliquity cycle, Erf's axial tilt is decreasing, about 48 arcseconds per century now. The tilt varies from 24.5 to 22.1 degrees over a 41,000 year period. You can thank the Moon for stabilizing that. Without the Moon it would vary much greater, and chaotically. That change in tilt has cost me 3 seconds of daylight at the summer solstice since I was born. Gain it back on the winter side though. Not here in East Texas. Lush, green and livable. Still hot, though. I will admit it's not like the Mid-Atlantic. Still, life here behind the Pine Curtain is awfully nice. Posted by: Weirddave at August 30, 2025 01:41 AM (df/te) 279
WEll, getting close enough to midnight here. Going to call it a night. Later, Horde.

Love the reaction Trump is getting after cleaning up Washington, D.C.
Gavin Newscum is livid. J.B. Pritzker is going to have a stroke. It's like Trump told them, "Clean up your room, or the Feds are going to come help you." Our angry pre-teen Dems are going ballistic at the mere thought. Posted by: Sam Adams at August 30, 2025 01:47 AM (X+xvk) 283
Just saw some clips of some CDC POS "doctor" who resigned in high protest of what Bobby and Trump are doing to our precious public health system and CDC. I think it was ceasing tor recommend the Covid "vaccines" that did it. This idiot was making the rounds on MSNBC being treated as a hero. He uptalks. Uptalk on women is bad enough, but a damned man doing it is just terrible indeed. I had to mute the TV. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 30, 2025 01:50 AM (w6EFb) 284

An Iraqi Muslim national passed out in a German court after hearing he was sentenced to life in prison. Taha Al-Jumailly, 29, was found guilty of crimes against humanity for chaining up a 5-year-old Yazidi girl in the sun and letting her die of thirst. May he rot! Texas is not bad, I survived over twenty years of it.
Don't think I would like the north east part of the country. It seems so bleak, cold and crowded. And they have that liberal thing going on. Posted by: Case at August 30, 2025 02:02 AM (iwlvf) 289

What we are witnessing is the full effect of the Obamafication of America in the courts. From day one Obama and his crew would commit plainly unconstitutional acts knowing that if they were challenged (ie Obamacare) - IF - by the GOP, by the time the cases wound their way thru the system and they lost, it was too little too late. This is part 2 - file frivolous challenges after packing the bench with corrupt leftists because by the time thing make their way to the Supremes - if the USSCT even accepts cert - you've thrown giant wrenches into the system and at the very least, drained resources from the DOJ that would have otherwise been spent unwinding other unconstitutional acts you've commited. And best of all, absolutely no recourse against the corruption - NONE, NOTHING to stop it as it's all treated as simply misguided rather than crimes against the US.

Doesn't feel like Labor Day time here... still hotter than fcuk during the day, and although it cools overnight, there isn't the *chill* yet that usually occurs by now.
Summer isn't giving up, and it sucks. At least I don't need to fight the pellet stove for heat yet, right? LOL! It'll be freezing outside, all too soon. Winter is coming! Posted by: JQ at August 30, 2025 02:29 AM (rdVOm) 296

Yeah, Braenyard-- it's on us (the next gen.) to keep traditions going.
I tried, but siblings aren't interested. No children of my own. Stepson is more involved with hubby's XW & her family. So, who cares? I've given up. Posted by: JQ at August 30, 2025 02:35 AM (rdVOm) 298
High school taught and college reinforced that big families/families were from the agrarian lifestyle and that we are past that. Families/big families a past lifestyle - history. Modern science and technology has made it totally unnecessary.
My family wasn't peaches and cream so it was easy to accept. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at August 30, 2025 02:36 AM (7OHl1) 299
I believe that most families were not peaches & cream. Ever.
Family strife and disagreements were/are common, and presented a means of learning problem resolution and diplomacy. Having multiple siblings taught people how to deal with peers, IMO. Those challenges have been removed and people can't get along anymore. (simplistic, but...) Posted by: JQ at August 30, 2025 02:43 AM (rdVOm) 300

- Wake up at 02:43.
- Power up my Kindle Paperwhite to check the clock on it. - Kindle's showing the main screen. - Sigh. They've updated it again. - Got to library, try to open a book. - "The Item you were reading has been removed and is no longer available on your Kindle." - Try another book I've already finished reading. - "The Item you were reading has been removed and is no longer available on your Kindle." - Grumble a bunch, throw on clothes, go downstairs to diagnose this. - Read a bunch of help forums where way too many of the help posts are either AI generated, or idjits all following the same help script. - Finally settle on a full factory reset of the Kindle and do that. Spend 5 minutes getting it re-registered. ALL downloaded books are gone (of course, it was a factory reset.) - Download the one I was reading. - Open it and realize all my font settings also are gone and spend a few minutes getting that back into shape. It's now half an hour later, and I'm both completely awake and exhausted. Could I have left this till later? Nope. Seeing your Kindle tell you your entire library has been removed is like smelling the smoke from the Great Library of Alexandria.
