8/28 - Grumpy and Recalcitrant asks for prayers for Pixy Misa, who runs the morning tech thread. Pixy has been suffering from edema (water retention and swelling of the extremities). In addition to the swelling, there has been significant pain in both feet, and now one hand. Please pray that the doctors and nurses take this problem seriously. Pray that God guides their minds and hands in the diagnostic and treatment processes, so that Pixy may be restored to full health. Pray that He sustains Pixy through this health trial.
Amen! Posted by: m at August 30, 2025 07:48 AM (aURVT) 10

Breakfast of champions. Posted by: San Franpsycho at August 30, 2025 08:44 AM (RIvkX) Diana had two problems. One was acute: she didn't want to eat. So among us and our vets, we tried to break her cycle of pain, which led to her stomach becoming irritated such that she didn't want to eat. That problem has been solved. The other is chronic: she doesn't gain any weight. Diana is three years old and weighs 59 pounds. Her half-sister Puff, who's not yet two, weighs 74 pounds, which is about right. So either Diana has an incredible metabolic rate or there's something that prevents her from getting the full benefit of the ample viander we provide. "Since May 28, 2020, there have been at least 521 attacks against Catholic churches in the United States, including acts of arson which damaged or destroyed historic churches; spray-painting and graffiti of satanic messages; rocks and bricks thrown through windows; statues destroyed (often with heads cut off); and illegal disruptions of Mass. Attacks spiked dramatically after the draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked in May 2022. At least 355 attacks have been perpetrated against Catholic churches since the Supreme Court leak, with many including graffiti with pro-abortion messages. Crucially, while a handful of the attacks have included thefts, the vast majority have only involved property destruction, indicating that the primary motive is not material gain."

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at August 30, 2025 09:07 AM (pJWtt) --- This is why they had to change the voting rules, which had stood for two hundred years - they couldn't win an honest vote. Some folks are whining about how slow things are moving (an oddly perjorative term, since they never moved at ALL before) but Trump is moving systematically. There's a master calendar somewhere, constantly updated and he wants to make sure that information is released when it does the most damage. Like the fednapping in Michigan. You don't drop all of that now, because new candidates can be found. No, drop it a year from now, and really screw the Dems. Trump understands that he needs to flood the zone, and he's doing just that, shifting from crime, to trade, to conspiracies, to hearings - all the while keeping the Dems on their back foot. Anyone complaining about this is the kind person who bitches because their team is *only* up by 21-0 in the first quarter. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. I think it is interesting how US politicians are now going full UK about prayer. Who came up with this? Why did they think it was a good idea?
The British of all people should know history, and the whole blood-soaked story of the English Reformation should have demonstrated to them that you cannot kill your way to victory over faith. You might keep it out of view, but despite grisly torture, organized famine and wholesale massacres, they could not wipe out dissenting beliefs, and arguably made them stronger through the many courageous martyrs they created. This also gives the lie to the notion that England is some sort of paragon of 'liberty.' It has always been coercive, and the myth of their freedoms has been utterly exposed. English liberty was an afterthought, an accident that happened because the ruling class was too distracted by Empire to keep the serfs down. I think our Founding Fathers actually believed in it, and were genuinely shocked that it was a myth in practice. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 30, 2025 09:21 AM (ZOv7s) 170

Posted by: Skip at August 30, 2025 09:16 AM (+qU29) Before I realized the Communism is actually an inversion of Christianity, I used to argue that Communism is unethical because it requires robbing the productive of the fruit of their labor, infantalizes others by making them dependent upon government largess, and requires a ruling class to make the decisions to redistribute wealth. Now, I have come to understand that the struggle against Communism is actually spiritual. While Communism purports to aid the poor, it actually requires the commission of the Sins of Pride, Theft, Anger and Envy. There is no agape' (unconditional love) in Communism. Something no one remembers about WW II Britain was that their "finest hour" also completely suspended democracy. Churchill was driven from power in part because the Conservative Party had ruled for 10 years without an election.
When Churchill took over, a National Coalition government was created - what we would call Uniparty. Everybody got a piece of the action and while I'm sure there was a lot of good feelings among the politicians at the time, they also took over every aspect of English life, and that ratchet has never been released. Which is how they can imprison people for the "crime" of thinking the wrong thoughts (silent prayer). Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. While Libre Office is quite good and reasonably priced (read, free), recognize that it does not replicate everything that could be done with MS Office. In particular, presentations prepared in Libre Office did not run well in Powerpoint's presentation mode, where the lowest portion of each slide was cut off from showing on the screen, in my own experience. (To be fair, I did not have access to a machine running Office so that I might have been able to solve the issue ahead of my having to deliver the presentation.) Original Antifa would massacre current Antifa - not just because they hate them, but because original Antifa were hard men who drank cold coffee, slept on the ground, and charged machinegun nests with broken rifles.
The International Brigades were often Communist dupes, and frequently purged, but they were actually tough fighters. George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia talks about the harsh conditions that existed even in a quiet sector of the front. Modern Antifa cries when their iced latte melts. I wish Amazon would get their stuff together and stop breaking people's libraries on their Kindle, but I suspect we're going to see a lot more of this in the coming years, all over the place, because of "vibe coding" where people let the 'AI's (LLMs really) write all their code for them. Have you seen the latest update to the Google apps on Android phones? The timer with huge buttons, and for the stopwatch, you have to scroll down to see all three buttons. The contacts screen that doesn't show you your nice alphabetized contacts list, but your most recent contacts, and you have to push another small button to get to the list you actually want (HERE they'll use an ultra small button, but not for the stopwatch, oh no, there they're yuuuuuuge) *bangs head on desk* It's gone from "Technology, don't fail me now!" to "Technology, please try not to be retarded today." Posted by: Thomas Paine My old bank, a small local bank I had since 1984, used to be great. Then they apparently got bought out and proceeded to incrementally bork their on-line system. Bestest improvement is when they 'upgraded' and required users to make new 'secure' user names... So my new user name looked more like a password because it followed format I had used for years. About three months later I received a phone call asking me to change my user name - using a 'pipe' ('|') in my name caused their system to freeze up when they ran certain functions and it took months for them to figure out the 'bug'. Not as bad as "del *.* /s". But bad enough that they had to revise their programming to filter pipes from user names (still OK in pw though). no sign of super powers yet.
- Apparently, Mrs. Wrecks' and my super powers have kicked in. Thirty years ago, when our daughters were mere toddlers, daycare was provided by our neighbors. Something happened between our toddlers and their toddler son. We had had adopted through Human Services who stressed that our daughters would be watched very carefully for any signs of abuse. When this event, apparently playing doctor, happened, Mrs. Wrecks felt we had to report to DHS. This was traumatic to our neighbors who were good people, especially the mom (dad was a little controlling). A few days ago, Mrs. Wrecks met them again and they've had a tragic life including the mom now having cancer. The dad accused us of causing her cancer by reporting the incident from 30 years ago. So apparently our super power is causing cancer but it takes a few decades to kick in. I don't want to question the canonical validity or the piety of those attending, but: is this the best we can do? The chatting and laughing before Mass begins, the awful music, the readings done from the William Shatner school of declamation, the Tabernacle shoved off onto a side table, the lack of vertical reverence. The Tridentine Mass is the culmination of centuries of organic development. The Novus Ordo Mass is like a meteor that crashed down and destroyed all that beauty, reverence and mystery. Sorry, I got no use for George Carlin. He may have been funny once, but he turned into a bitter old religion hater later on.
*** Once, or twice maybe. He really only ever had a few funny bits. He mostly just got famous for swearing a whole lot. He's a badly overrated hack, IMO. Andrew Dice Clay for the pseudointellectual crowd. Posted by: Worst Earl Flloyd-George at August 30, 2025 11:08 AM (Eax70) 381
Kentucky transplants, those from elsewhere, refer to it as "Louie-ville" if they don't use "Louis-ville or Lewis-ville."
I just refer to it as "the shithole." Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 30, 2025 10:54 AM (Q4IgG) --- The cultural differences between eastern and western Kentucky are pretty stark. In the east you have mountains, dry counties, moonshine and generational poverty and the west has bourbon, horses, wealth and of course there's the Protestant-Catholic split as well. Fascinating. The mountainside is still peppered with cousins, but her parents sold out and others are sure to follow. Also: don't venture down into the wrong holler with Michigan plates! Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd, I think you are referring to SW Ohio when you say "dull". SE Ohio is a totally different world with it's own culture, topography, and economics.
South of a line from about Cambridge to Chillicothe. I wouldn't call it dull but it's not a good place to live if you are in a hurry. Posted by: pawn at August 30, 2025 11:38 AM (c0xEo) 393
Prayer list perused. God bless all with health of body, mind, spirit, family, as needed.
We mortals sure can be fragile critters. This week they poked at my heart because the left side function was down v 2 years ago. Good fortune three ways. First, they didn't give me a brutally early appointment, and actually got me through with little waiting time. Second, they were able to go in through my right wrist instead of the groin (such amazing tech). Thirdlish, they found no obstructions, so no stent, no surgery, nothing but recommendation to exercise more. Next week, another scan to see how the clots are or aren't. After that, more stuff… Psalm 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
