First World Problems...

WatchCrisis2025.jpg

11 seconds each day! I lose 11 seconds! Each day!

Unacceptable. How can I go on?

That's almost 0.5 seconds each hour. Meals are ruined, appointments are missed!

I'm late, I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say 'hello, goodbye,' I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!

Now I need to learn how to adjust my watch!

The women I spoke with were quite unconcerned. The only reason I called was to make sure the guy got his food, 'cos his ticket said he was charged $45± for the stuff.

Their attitude was 'Eat it or throw it away'. I finally got a 'commitment of sorts' that they'd re-deliver his order at no charge. Or give him a credit. They didn't care.

Gotta say, the pizza he ordered was first-class - and the brownie was definitely Gold Medal. Life can sometimes be good - even accidentally. I hope he eventually got his replacement.

"Southwest last week announced it will stop being the airline of choice for fat people, requiring them to buy a second seat if their blubber or limbs "encroach on the neighboring seat." That change also takes effect on Jan. 27.

Southwest has been giving plus-size passengers an option of either buying an extra seat in advance and requesting a refund for it later, or asking for a free extra seat at the airport.

Under the new rule, they'll still have some chance of being refunded, but only if the flight wasn't fully booked at departure, and only if both tickets are in the same booking class. "

102 I have a Rolex GMTII in stainless that I bought myself new in 1982. I've worn it nearly every day, even wrenching in the shop. Been overhauled twice, two bands, two bezels. I wrecked my Kawi KX500 3 weeks ago and nearly destroyed the watch.
Shattered the crystal, ruined the bezel, deep scratches in the bracelet. I'm out of the Hospital but it isn't. That watch has been with me on every adventure for 43 years and it's still worth 4 times what I paid for it.

118 My First World Problem was having to endure an old Lefty Catholic woman rant about her former Bishop at Denver, CO. She claimed that he had decreed that no teenagers that were Homosexual, Lesbian or Transgender were permitted to attend any Catholic school in his diocese. I told her that I didn't know anything about it, since we lived in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

I derailed her rant when I told her that homosexuality and lesbianism were disordered sexual passions, and almost certainly they had been sexually abused during their formative years. I asked why wouldn't we want to try to brake that cycle of abuse, rather than celebrate it?

I then told her that transgenders were mentally ill, and people were making a lot of money off of the transgender people's mental anguish.

No, I don't think she dislikes him (at least not yet). She regarded "Pope Bob" as a cute nick-name, and was surprised when I told her that was offensive to me.

I told her that Pope Francis had a "troubled" pontificate, and I wished Pope Leo well.

189 >> I don’t even know what that chart is.

Timegrapher "app" for the smart phone, which shows the health of a mechanical watch. You put the watch on a wood table to use a sounding board, and the program using the microphone to analyze the "tick-tock" of the watch movement. The slope determines the rate. A vertical line would be dead accurate.

That graph looks good. You want a nice straight line indicating the rate is stable. A sick watch can show a variable rate. The "beat error" of 0.7 ms there is the difference in time between tick to tock and tock back to tick. That 0.7ms is fine.

First Seiko was from K-Mart. I spent the winter and half a summer in a hay field. It was returned to me when a farmer cracked a bale open, found it and returned it to the hay man. Who helped it make its way back to me.

Yeah, time was off about two minutes.

199 A quartz watch that loses 11 sec./day needs a new battery, or to be junked. My nearing-fifty Rolex Sub loses or gains (I forget which) about 3-4 a day, and I don't wear it all day long. And my over-fifty Date model is about the same.

Wonderful it is, that we have such devices available to us, and that we can check them against a standard like Time.gov or WWV shortwave radio/telephone call.

True. But they do keep great time. And they depend on *you*, not a battery. The "self-winding" or automatic models (which I think is all of them now) need your body motion to remain running. Or you can wind them, or put them on a winder, but you can't let them sit in a drawer and expect them to run.

I feel its no longer economically feasible to have somebody change the battery, and arthritic hands dictate I can't. Yep, Timex is still running on a battery I forgot how long has been in place. I'll check it sometimes when setting the Seiko Five. Takes a licking, keeps on ticking.

The old accuracy standard for mechanical watches, the "normal" standing is -4 to +6 s per day, which you can see on that timegrapher display in the screenshot. Why the asymmetry, I don't know. A mechanical "chronometer" standard would be tighter than that.

"Regulating" is adjusting the mechanism to correct the rate and all that.
