The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Amateur athletics has been a joke for a very long time. The Olympics, once an important cultural and athletic event, has morphed into a marketing miasma filled with professional athletes in a dizzying variety of sports and pseudo-sports. They began to allow professionals in the 1980s, and every four years the Olympics has become less important, and seemingly more crooked and graft-seeking. Does anyone really care anymore?

But for sheer, disgusting, acquisitive, money-grubbing, power-hungry sleaziness, it is hard to beat the NCAA. It has been around for 115 years, and its stranglehold on college athletics has been a cash-cow for its leadership and major universities, but has also created a massive problem for itself, because it treated the student athletes -- the entire reason for its existence -- as chattel. They didn't want to share any of the oceans of TV money that suddenly flooded into its coffers, and why should they? Student athletes were a dime a dozen! So they created a massive regulatory apparatus that allowed them to control every aspect of college athletics, essentially a modern plantation.

Every dime went to the NCAA and the universities, and if an athlete had the temerity to make a few bucks selling autographs? Bang! Loss of eligibility!

But their generations of total control began to show some flaws, as athletes and even some schools began to attack the NCAA in court. In 2021, NCAA v. Alston, a unanimous SCOTUS decision held that their behavior was illegal, and that student-athletes could be paid.

That was good and bad, as the charming and romantic fiction that major-college athletes were "students" finally fell apart. But at least these athletes can now take financial advantage of their skills.

And the legal attacks keep coming!

College Athletes File Lawsuit Against NCAA To Change The 'Redshirt Rule'

Right now, the five-year rule that is currently in place only allows athletes to compete in four years of the five years granted to them, with plenty of athletes in football, basketball, baseball and other sports only being part of a team if they use a 'redshirt year' as part of their clock. Athletes are not given that opportunity to play in all five years, only four, with a set number of games during the redshirt year in place.

If an athlete wanted to maintain their 'redshirt year', they could only compete in four games during that initial redshirt season. If they were to compete in a fifth, it would count towards their eligibility clock.

In the new lawsuit filed by the 'Texas Trial Group' on Tuesday, they are challenging the NCAA's right to allow these athletes to participate in workouts, practice and other daily activities, but not allowed to play in the actual games.

Hopefully the NCAA will fade into oblivion, as the various college conferences manage their own athletes, and admit to the world that college athletics is a business, and a very big one!

It is sad that amateur athletics is rapidly disappearing, although one wonders whether it ever truly existed. But the eventual demise of the NCAA is an unalloyed good thing, no matter what one may think of the current state of college athletics. They have been a corrosive influence on American sports for too long.

16 I have had dreams of amateur sports like Town Ball coming back into vogue. Every decent town used to have a ball team, that mostly drank, true, but they got nine guys on the field for nine innings to be cheered at.

I worked up rules for town ball based on Workup, where each position changed per inning, so you didn't have a pro pitcher or have any need for a designated hitter.

17 Professional sports teams at colleges run under the taxpayer dime is genuinely stupid if you consider colleges are supposed to have a mission in education. Very few sports programs make a profit at universities and the whole NIL charade has just turned it entirely into a professional league. As that money goes to the stars, you will see a withering of all the non revenue sports because more and more money will have to go to the revenue sports of mens basketball and football and the commensurate required spending on female sports under Title IX. So mens track, baseball, wrestling, etc. will go on the chopping block to pay for the sportsball regime.

It would be far better to expel the college pro sports from the campus to professional leagues and simply license the name of the university to the teams or have equity ownership in the 'teams'. No pretense about education for those pros.

They can damn well pay for their degrees with their professional earnings like other students.

The old system was bad, the new one is worse. And I say that as someone who taught at big sportsball institutions and taught 'star' players in revenue sports.

(Warning: Poofter and/or Wanker alert)

"Someone asked, "Why don't some Britons like Donald Trump?"

Nate White, an eloquent and witty English writer, wrote this magnificent response:

Trump lacks certain qualities that the British traditionally value.

He has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honor, and no grace - qualities, oddly enough, with which his predecessor, Mr. Obama, was generously endowed.

While Trump may be ridiculous, he has never said anything ironic, amusing, or even mildly funny—not once, ever. I don't mean this rhetorically, I mean it literally: never. To British sensibilities a lack of humor is almost inhuman.

...

There is never an underlying layer of irony, complexity, nuance, or depth. It's all superficial. We see him as lacking an inner world, a soul.

In Britain, we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky outsiders: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist."

28 Ideally there would be eight 'super conferences' but everyone is joining the Big 10 and the SEC. Pretty soon it'll just be those two and a half dozen or more second-tier conferences.

Which is LAME.

If I were in charge, no conference would have more than 12 teams, they'd play 8 conference games per year, and 4 out-of-conference games (this is for football, basketball and other sports would have to be addressed).

And f*ck Notre Dame.

29 I hate the NCAA… they ruined the football program of my alma mater USC because Reggie Bush’s family got some money… that would be entirely legal now.

On the other hand, all the legal open money in college football nowadays is ruining it…. I mean USC might not even schedule Notre Dame anymore after next year! This is sacrilege and ruins tradition and is all due to money…. I preferred the old system (circa 1970s through 2015) where schools paid the players under the table but everyone pretended not to notice. Whether that was right or not it was a much better experience for the fan. Now with NIL and transfer portal you could conceivably have to pull for a QB this year then root against him when he moves to your rival for more money next year. Heck, Tennessee and UCLA essentially traded QBs. It’s ridiculous… it’s why Nick Saban retired

College Division Three games if you can find them. No scholarships, minimal spending, etc. More for true love of the game.

The non revenue sports have resisted much of the rot so far and my students from those, male or female, were generally serious about education because they knew making big bucks as a pro was not very likely. The revenue sports 'stars' that I taught had tutors to basically do their education for them, rarely showed up for class, or even did minimal effort to communicate absences, etc. They did poorly in my lower division classes in an intro class and never took my upper division classes.

Essentially the sports programs did the off the field work in revenue sports for them so they could prioritize being an athelete.

44 BTW… anecdotal but based on my limited look, going to a college football game is now more costly than going to an NFL game. I thought it might be fun to go to the Texas State fair in October and take in the classic Texas-OU “red river” rivalry game. I looked on stubhub: close to $800 for one ticket. For comparison I looked at ticket prices for a home Cowboy (NFL) game in Arlington same timeframe. About $170 for a single ticket…. NIL and paying college players is gonna price the average fan out of going to games.

A symptom of the monarchy is that subjects are not the same as citizens. So it produces a courtier spirit. As court fools could get away with saying things that others could not, it lead to the courtiers that could never become king, to use things like wit, irony, etc. so that upon plain reading, their words could not construed as treason without a large dollop of actions. The absurd class structure is so bad that even the Brits mock its vices.

"Vanity was a powerful motivator of missionaries and clerks, and Julian was the product of a system - the prosperous family, the Church Genteel, St. Grottlesex and the Ivy League, the creed of good works, the seal of secret societies - that was designed, like its model, the British public school system, to produce a class of competent, hardworking, unshakably self-satisfied clerks. History was overrun with underlings who believed they had empowered the monarch. But as all human beings except the clerks knew, a ruler’s right to rule actually came from magic. 76 My kids class had a kid who could kick field goals from the opposite end zone. A true all around talent. He would do it over my kids marching band while they practiced. I tried telling the kid he was damn near unique and really needed to take care of himself but the damn coaches wanted him as a reciever and tight end, he'd play the whole game offence and defence. Senior year... Broken Femur. He never got "it" back.
My point being that for these kids the education is the important thing. There needs to be a fallback as for every pro athlete out there there are 10 who "coulda been a contenda". Injuries, sometimes debilitating are a thing.
Anybody in sports without a backup plan is betting on a loosing hand.

It's questionable, to me, how much the NCAA provides here. The schools? Sure, they make some money by having popular athletics but the various school conferences have their own TV agreements. The NCAA's purpose was to make rules to ensure that everyone was on the same base so the games were honest. I question if any of that is still happening.

Class in the sense of conformity is to reduce intergroup dissension--nothing more, nothing less.

It has little to do with truth, knowledge, and logic. And people exercising those virtues are excluded because of it. See what happens to true whistleblowers, truth tellers, etc. they are pelted with rotten fruit by the classy types because they threaten the very foundations of conformity.

So Trump calling Haiti a shithole country (I can see him saying it but in private) is simply rhetoric that is truthful even though it offends the classy NR twits. And if you do not admit it is shitty, then how ever will you fix the broken culture and immigrants from Haiti are likely to reflect that broken culture.

They take young, mostly black, mostly poor young men and exploit tf out of them. When the 99% of those boys don’t make it to the pros, they have had no education, no skills developed and have nothing to show for their enslavement. They use their four years of eligibility and have no chance of getting a job or earning a living.

The NCAA does not enforce minimum gpa’s. They do not enforce progression towards a degree.

Sure, up until recently schools couldn't directly pay their athletes, but *mumble* years ago when I was at a major D1 state university, it was certainly no coincidence that our star football and basketball players all drove brand new Escalades or similar, with dealer plates on them and always had brand-new clothes and shoes despite most of them coming from modest means.

Yeah, they were sure fooling everyone.

The SCOTUS ruling that allowed them to be paid flung the door open to basically the Wild West of college sports. It looks ridiculous right now, because it is, but eventually the pendulum will swing back and the conferences will put up guard rails around just how stupid it can get.

It is hilarious though that there are a couple of current college quarterbacks that would actually have to take a pay cut to go to the NFL on a rookie contract.

139 "Someone asked, "Why don't some Britons like Donald Trump?"

148 ... actually, if you look at the Reagan campaign from 1976, it was clear that Reagan was an outsider. He tried to bring on "moderate" U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania Richard Schweiker as his prospective VP.
Posted by: SMOD

And he brought in a George Bush as party peacemaker for 1980--his worry was the party left would bolt otherwise (and he still had to deal with Anderson running as an independent GOP piece of shit in the general.)

Reagan picked mostly insiders from his California days and a host of establishment GOP figures for his cabinets. The disruptors were promptly moved aside like James Watt or his first NSA director by internal sabotage much as Trump's 1st term was sabotaged. And GOP senators like Howard Baker killed any real movement toward killing off the moderate GOP failed policies dating back to Thomas Dewey and Ike.

Reagan tried, like Trump I, to fix within the system--Trump in II is taking his cues from Andy Jackson--destroy your political enemies by destroying their institutions like the bureaucracy, higher ed, media, etc. Reagan never made war on the ruling class--Trump, like Jackson or FDR is.

Posted by: whig at September 04, 2025 11:46 AM (WDjG6)

149 Benny Johnson:

Career CDC bureaucrats are distributing a CIA manual entitled “Simple Sabotage” to their subordinates. I have multiple whistleblowers with first hand direct evidence of this. The CDC ranks are now acting out this CIA strategy to the letter. The walkouts, corporate media hits, fake protests and Senate hearings. It’s all staged to systematically sabotage Trump’s health agenda

The manual instructs employees to purposely slow operations by demanding written orders and pretending not to understand, while carrying out acts that spread blame across as many people as possible.

“Do everything possible to delay the delivery of orders. Don’t deliver until completely ready.”

“Try to commit acts for which large numbers of people could be responsible.”

Employees are encouraged to develop a “non-cooperative” attitude, and get others to do the same.

Paired with this is “acting stupid” to lower morale, confuse the department, and undermine efficiency.

The manual teaches staff to make perfection the enemy of good on even the simplest tasks.

It directs them to over-criticize, drag out work, and deliberately submit illegible documents so they have to be redone.

Yes they did actually unless they got rid of it in the last couple of years. I had to fill out endless reports to academic tutors for sportsball teams during my career as a prof. Had to maintain academic progress (handled by cherry picking widely divergent classes and gender studies type not ending up as a degree in many cases--simply classroom hours.) and the gpa requirement was met by having tutors do their school work and picking certain professors, etc. that would work with the sportsball program.

the worst treatment is for those that counter openly the foundational cultural myths. Foundational cultural myths are the ones we accept without thinking and cannot abide contradiction without huge amounts of conflict because it chips away at the basic pretext for what we do and why we do it.

176 Thoroughly disagree that the NCAA should be disbanded / dissolve. Changing the spineless woke administrative leadership would be good. But gutting it and relegating the remains to conferences... That would kill interest in it. Hard to believe someone who cared about the team sports that college athletics is most popular in (football & basketball, though I also like baseball) would advocate for this. Fans of college football and basketball are overwhelmingly interested in 'national champions', and almost exclusively the post-season play of both sports have evolved over decades to satisfy this interest in a 'national champion'. No NCAA (or equivalent national body), no national champion. And if you're a true fan of these team sports but also detest the woke subjugation of them in the 'traditional' professional leagues (NFL & NBA), the NCAA is you're only real alternative to enjoy them. (And ditto if you value your children having these team sports experiences and enjoying examples on TV.)

178 I fully agree that, at least for major conference teams, ‘student’-athletes has long been a fictional term as the athletes are only able to skate by as ‘students’ with extra help and throwaway classes while on a path to not graduate in a way not available to real students (whose primary purpose is to graduate). But (a) many athletes do graduate and use those skills in productive careers, and (b) alums, including donors, have a romantic attachment to the teams of their alma mater that is dissolved if the teams are detached from the university and spun into ‘minor league’ professional teams. So I don’t have a problem with students being paid, but I think the student aspect of it should be a choice. If they elect to just be an athlete, they are bound by the same types of behavioral terms that professional league athletes are in their contracts, but otherwise don’t have to dilute classroom productivity. But if they elect to be students, they must succeed by the same standards as all students to graduate.

I remember in my home town cases where kids would get a bogus address to attend a high school with a better chance at an athletic scholarship. One I remember was Uncle parking a Winnebago behind his tavern so Nephew could attend AAA high school. Guess it makes a difference if you went up against some township school or Cincinatti Mollar in your senior year (the excuse given).

Pretty much true and to be fair to athletes, competition at the top level in football and basketball requires practicing and playing at an immense physical toll to the body that leave schooling as a lower priority than sports does for most players. Playing, social life, mundane activities like eating, sleeping, etc, and family leaves school coming in at 4-5 place in the hierarchy.

To my point, better to have being a student as an option for them. Hold them to contracts with behavioral clauses similar to professional leagues if they just want to play. There's still a regional affiliation and the schools still have their teams, and true 'student-athletes' can still advance their livelihoods through scholarship. So you (and my grandfather) can still use athletic scholarship to succeed and have a well rounded life experience, others can just compete, and fans can still enjoy the experience.

TNG tried and failed to address that in an early episode where they found some cryo frozen 20th century businessman. Picard started in on some philosophy about how people don't chase material wealth any longer but instead seek personal betterment or some such prattle.

Now TBF, it's a bit challenging to have an economic system where replicators are in the mix. When resources aren't scarce, there's really no need for a distribution system.

But, just some stuff that wasn't thought through. Really though I never gave much thought to Star Trek Economics until they started in with the preaching.

As an aside, I think Star Trek Economics would be an acceptable class for a college athlete to take.

I am going to be nice here but you have no idea about how higher ed finances these teams--other than about 10-15 programs, most lose massive money and that has to be made up from taxpayers either by subsidizing tuition via loans/grants to pay the mandatory sports fees and facilities, or directly by state subsidies. Title IX makes it worse.

LSU for example, has a spanking stadium and arenas, its library by contrast has falling ceiling tiles, and a massive water problem. Which is more essential to the masses of students trying to get an education.

I speak as someone who played football from 2nd grade as a lineman mostly into high school. Sports should be handled as club based activities in competition not as an educational mission. Our kids are not all right and not learning in all grades--mebbe we should not do mission creep and include sportsball prominence instead of educating the masses. We don't have money for both.

230 Paying athletes has screwed up the system a lot, too.

I don’t really care either way, but it’s getting really expensive for the smaller of the major universities, like Clemson for example, to get good players and keep them when they can transfer so easily.

And I always thought the “redshirt” rule was ridiculous.

Why should a student athlete with a scholarship get an extra year of school when everybody else is supposed to be done in four years?

Silly shit all around.

Sports is fine but we need to get our priorities straight and focus on academics, especially STEM, to compete with the rest of the world.

Far too much focus, and spending money, on sportsball and athletes over developing the brains of young people, and it shows with the quality of education most people get in universities the past several decades.

Students in non revenue sports know they are unlikely to get jobs beyond coaching perhaps in their field. So they concentrate on academics over socializing in many cases. But, it is also fair to say that football and basketball players spend a lot more time in weightrooms etc. off the books so to speak than non contact sports. They also tend to suffer more permanent type injuries from my perspective. I saw some of that in gymnastics at one school and female basketball regarding leg injuries. That was in part because they were shamed by stories about it. Now go into outmoded labs, deteriorating classrooms and dorms, etc.

Big sportsball siphons money away from education into entertainment for fans. NIL makes it much worse.

There is no educational purpose to it so we shouldn't keep associating sportsball teams with universities if they actually hurt the primary mission of the university--education. And you and my taxdollars are subsidizing it via federal student aid (stripped off for football/basketball by mandatory fees), and for facilities if the school is public.

Want to return sports to actual educative purposes--small leagues of team sports competing with adjacent colleges/universities and intermurals benefit a damn sight more students for that purpose. And most of those students are actual students that attend class, graduate, etc.

--------------

I'm going to be nice here and say that you have misleading logic that is coupling well with your disinterest in the sports. Money is fungible. Tax dollars have subsidized most colleges, but they are not directly correlated to sports facilities. Colleges both major and minor profess to the income they get from major sports (it's why throwaway schools play top 10 schools; for the money). And your LSU analogy is hollow. I'm from Louisiana and most of my friends are LSU graduates and professionals in varying fields, many of whom are season ticket holders. You're making it sound like they have substandard educations... We can have sports and education. In fact, sports are a part of education (teamwork, sacrifice, higher burdens of work, etc.). Sports are and should be a net financial gain for colleges. If you and your own don't want both, go your own way. Many want both.
