From arthur.io:
This odd and charming double portrait shows the artist's two sons, two-year-old Bernard - later a famous artist in his own right - and Roger, aged four. It was painted while the family was vacationing at the château de Vineuil - at Bourré in the Loir-et-Cher département of central France - which belonged to madame Boutet de Monvel's cousin, the photographer Louis Rousselet. The two boys look to be posing under great duress, just waiting - stiffly, impatiently; the younger one decidely pouting - until given the all-clear to run off and play. Completely OT, but I did some basic research into the ability of higher courts to take casework away from district court judges.
Based on comments and such, I'd assumed it was something SCOTUS could do, but the applicable law (28 U.S.C. §§ 351–364) doesn't say that. Complaints of misbehavior and other concerns go through the circuit's chief judge who can empanel a group of judges to review the complaints. In the case of the DC Circuit, that chief judge is Sri Srinivasan, appointed by Obama. So, no hope at all of that path ever happening to most of these district court judges. Gov. Pritzker: “When did we become a country where it’s ok for the U.S. president to insist on national television that a state should call him to beg for anything, especially something we don’t want? Have we truly lost all sense of sanity in this nation that we treat this as normal?” it's 100% going to be the same shit he pulled in LA. Citing some archaic law and "federalizing" their NG without having to give so much as a fucking justification. Because "crime." If MAGA sets that precedent they will be sorry one day. They will face the consequences under a future president. They are very clearly attempting to cement permanent control and aren't planning to have any more elections that are both free and fair, but one can hope. People will open carry and the military better be careful! They are out manned and outgunned. If the military attacks us on illegal orders, veterans will lead the resistance. Posted by: rickb223 ===== Tradeoffs as always. But with modern hollow point ammunition, 9mm comes close to matching 45 terminal lethality. The old days with fmj bullets gave 45 a much bigger edge. I have both and have used both plus throw in 38 Special, 357 Magnum, etc. With the possible exception of full bore 357 Magnum where you carry six normally, most semi auto pistols are not one hit stops. Rifles or shotguns are better for that if you must defend your house. So handguns are more to allow one to escape, evade, and avoid if possible in public because they are easier to conceal and usually quicker in action than unslinging a long arm and putting it into action. Plus some long arms are not safe to carry with a loaded chamber with no firing pin blocks. Posted by: whig at September 04, 2025 10:11 AM (WDjG6) 162

---------- There are several CIA ops, some started decades ago that are still running. Operation Mockingbird for example. A CIA operation to (allegedly) manipulate the domestic media outlets to broadcast propaganda. It was reported to still be operating long after it was stood up in the 1960's. Not that the media needs coaching from the CIA to spread propaganda, but I think the intent here is to spread certain forms of propaganda that support CIA positions... both here and abroad. Posted by: nurse ratched ====== The guy behind the 2nd Chance body armor was a poor pizza delivery guy. Got ambushed on delivery by three armed thugs. He got shot but shot every one of the perps with a 22 LR as that was all he could afford. It can work as most people decline to get shot even with a 22 LR and thugs are no different. But throwing in massive drugs intake by some perps, close range for many shots, and a prior history of being shot by perps, a 22 LR is unlikely to produce an immediate CNS stop until you get to contact range or can hit the jackpot to put one in the brain via eye sockets or the softer bones in the temple. Even a direct heart shot still gives the perp about 30-60 seconds depending on the cycle to kill you. Posted by: whig at September 04, 2025 10:30 AM (WDjG6) 194

Why, exactly, does the CIA even exist?
——- Ostensibly it was set up to act as a clearing house for intelligence to brief the President. That’s what Harry Truman thought, or wanted. The Cold War brought the Dulles brothers - John Foster and Allen as Secretary of State and CIA director at the same time, something that raised a lot of eyebrows. Eisenhower allowed them to run pretty much unsupervised and with a large black budget. The thinking went, this was a dirty business, the normal rules don’t apply, the Soviets were bent on world domination by any means necessary, etc etc. But most if not all organizations get corrupt over time, and turn inward on their own, goes the theory. Posted by: Tonypete ----- If your Mossberg has a tang mounted safety as I believe modern mossbergs 500 series do, then it blocks the firing pin when used. The trigger blocking safeties on the trigger guard on Remingtons or other makes do not block the firing pin that last time I checked. Mossberg 500 and 590 meet this military std. 3.17.6 Rouqh handlinq. Shotguns shall be capable of withstanding the impact when dropped from a height of four feet onto a hard surface without causing the weapon to be unsafe or unserviceable. That's more accurate than calling them victims. Almost all of them knew what they were doing, knew what they were getting into and still went ahead. And I guarantee every one had opportunities to get out. It's only when the money and access to rich men ran out that they complained. I'm tired of this shit. Conservatives have to accept that some girls choose prostitution, and then run back to the arms of moral society and cry crocodile tears how they were forced: Their sins are yours for not protecting them. AI summary, "Devastator" bullets during the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. 175 TJM, did not take it that way. And the fact that the US Scotus has the constitutional judicial power of the US means that they have constitutional options as well as statutory.
But the whole Scotus court is tired of the money disputes (even the leftists because it simply is not interesting to them on a personal level--same for a lot of business law, Indian rez law, etc.) So, you might see requests by the Trump admin for writs on mandamus requiring district court judges to deny jurisdiction for any lawsuit where Claim Courts have jurisdiction. Posted by: whig at September 04, 2025 10:20 AM (WDjG6) ====== I attributed the order to ACB for some reason based on faulty memory, but it was unsigned (Kagan wrote a concurrence), and it was Department of Homeland Security v. D.V.D. (7-2, the one with Sotomayor's cries of war as a dissent). The order includes the language, "If the Govern-ment wishes to seek additional relief in aid of the executionof our mandate, it may do so through mandamus." Oh TobyPete.
Even rifles, handguns, and shotguns with firing pin blocks can go off if abused enough. Those blocks can break from metal fatigue, excessive wear, or extreme conditions like throwing a shotgun or dropping one from thirty feet instead of 4 as in the mil spec I listed above. The Victory Model S&W revolver long action had a hammer block but S&W redesigned the action shortly after WWII after an accidental discharge happened when one was dropped on the hammer on a ship and it discharged. Similar things have happened with 1911's which is where Colt put in a firing pin block (original design was floating) Schwartzlose or something like that. Did not sell well and was expensive to make so dropped until Colt brought it back in the 70s. The other solution is the AR15 solution--the aluminum (titanium for 1911's usually) does not have the weight necessary to detonate military grade aka harder primers if the firing pin is inertially slammed into the back of the cartridge from being dropped. That is if you don't use civilian primers, have a high primer, etc. for the AR. Posted by: whig at September 04, 2025 10:59 AM (WDjG6) 251

NFL RedZone will have full commercials for the first time since the show began in 2009, host Scott Hanson said on the @PatMcAfeeShow The show's rights were acquired by ESPN on August 5th -- ABC/ESPN, those were the same assholes that, after over-paying for MNF, started stuffing commercials in after every kick. Then every replay review. Then, in-game commercials. There will never be another Madden/Sommeral booth crew because there is no more air to fill. It also makes participants remember to shut up because US law allows for the home jurisdiction of any US Citizen to prosecute for statutory rape and other sex crimes based on the home jurisdiction laws and not, for example, the site where the claimed offense was committed.
