80 Interesting portrait. The artist's talent is obvious and he used the typical feminine props: the hat with flowers, the dress, the fan, her posture. But her expression counters all that. In the words of Robert Heinlein, she looks like she's saving up more spit. Unless the woman wants to appear intimidating, this is not a flattering portrait.

On the other hand, Henri Fantin-Latour did some gorgeous still life paintings. They rival the ones I enjoy so much from the Dutch golden age.

96 All seriousness aside, this is a fascinating portrait. As someone said above, all the "traditional" feminine items are here like the long dress (possibly with corset beneath), the hairbrush, the wrap or shawl, and the hat with flowers. Yet she comes across as a strong personality, the kind who after her husband's death manages their business and her household in a no-nonsense fashion. And the neutral color of the background, and the dull red of the couch/love seat, only serve to emphasize her image and presentation.

Could be great, but much like The Other Side of the Wind, it'd be not really Welles' work.

The Guidelines call for this technique in the medical office setting:

1. The patient should avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for at least 30 minutes before measurement. Ensure the patient has emptied their bladder.
2. Use a blood pressure device that has been validated for accuracy (validatebp.org)
3. Use the correct cuff size on a bare arm.
4. The patient's arm should be supported at heart level.
5. Have the patient relax, sitting in a chair, feet on floor, legs uncrossed, and back supported for at least five minutes of rest.
6. Neither the patient or the clinician should talk during the rest period or during the measurement. The patient should not be using their phone.
7. Blood pressure should be measured in a temperature controlled room.
8. Take 2 or more blood pressure measurements at least one minute apart.Average the readings and provide the patient their blood pressure reading both verbally and in writing.

Quick show of hands if your doctor's staff come anywhere close to this. Not mine. Not once. Ever.

I've been using some AI tools for help with Parish documents, funding pitches, and requests for Diocesan approvals. Honestly, they are damn good at kicking out first drafts that only require a bit of finessing to get to a final state. The app takes direction well and makes appropriate updates. Many times, I do even have to ask it to insert appropriate and relevant references or quotes from Scripture or the CCC.

It's a bit scary.

There was a mechanic in my town who worked out of his trailer, and would come to the customer's house and do the work there. Guy was maybe 30 years old but drove a huge F250, was married with two young kids, and was super busy all the time. He charged much less because he had no overhead for a shop, but did almost all the work himself, and had a buddy who let him use his shop for turning brakes, etc. Dude was making a killing. Then he moved. We were sad.

My girl spawn has a good friend from high school who started college with her. They were in the same dorm, could hang out together, conference call the rest of their crew. He dropped out after a month. Hated college. He also isn't a fan of our Indiana small town. He got a job as a river guide for river rafting trips in Tennessee for the summer season and is getting ready to head to Portland to work the docks. He wants to try anything that is 1) outdoors and 2) far way from small hometown. Seems pretty happy with his choices so far.

To do it right, you have to include the costs of those illegals to local, state, and federal budgets, figure in the costs in crime, id theft, DUIs, car accident injuries, medical care, etc. against the cost of enforcement. And then apply the recurring carrying costs of illegals to the one time cost to remove them. Sort of like home maintenance on major items. He did nothing of the sort--therefore lying by omission.

It is. The only problem is that the human body does not react well over time to vigorous manual labor. The window to engage in such vocations is sometimes pretty small. Ideally, they become good managers of people and can grow enough to delegate and supervise.

In my case, BP was spiking to stroke levels aka 220-230 at worst for systolic, 120-150 for diastolic. Never had high BP in my life before Covids. The rise was enough to make me feel quite ill and that is leaving out the concurrent post Covid infections of severe bronchitis, pneumonia, and bronchitis again. Have a genetic IGG-3 deficiency that renders me subject to respiratory viral infections plus the biologics that I take for inflammatory arthritis makes that vulnerability worse.

My late first husband was a mechanic for a cargo airline. The FAA had stupid regulations too. Bureaucrats make stupid rules and the people who do the actual work know that those rules get people killed.
Rule says if a collapsible temporary fuel "bag" springs a leak, land immediately and repair until it passes inspection. It springs a leak exactly halfway between Hawaii and LAX. Rule says turn back to land in Hawaii. R, the mechanic, stood with his finger plugging the hole until they landed at LAX. Repair was done within an hour. They finally got out of LAX three days later when the FAA inspector got off his ass and waddled down to have a look.
Checking someone's blood pressure isn't rocket science and it for damn sure isn't the same as being a mechanic for an airplane. Maybe try a different false equivalent next time.

I taught myself to check my BP with a stethoscope and a manual sphygmomanometer. Those electronic devices can be really finicky to get an accurate reading.

People make fun of England for not having a written constitution but instead pointing to a patchwork of Parliamentary Acts, understandings, and a gradual move over time from the king to ministers appointed by the crown, to Parliament and its cabinet, and now to the centralized PM's office. The PM's office then makes mutual cause with the agency bureaucracies in order to do anything, using party to ram those agreements through then Cabinet and then Parliament in general. Cabinet ministers are basically salesmen.

In our system, the bureaucracy has made itself in a fourth branch by ignoring political direction from the GOP when it controls the presidency and even when it controls Congress. It forces appointees who are often retreads into an endless cycle of fighting their own departments to get anything done or the appointees go native and act as ambassadors and political cover for the bureaucracy. Like Britain, a few statutes are all that did it--Civil Service, independent agencies, and control of implementation and info.
