You’d get a letter. “Report to the Glorious Widget Factory #37” and …. it wasn’t optional. Maybe if you had connections you could get a better gig somewhere. They did have a saying “We pretend to work, and they pretend to pay us”; and they had chronic shortages of everything. The shit they did have often sucked, etc. Everyone had a side gig. I was in Romania about 15 years ago, obviously long after the Soviet occupation. One of the things that doesn't get talked about enough is the devastation that communism leaves behind long after it's gone. Many older Romanian citizens had no idea how to go about living in a free state. They had every bit of their lives controlled by government they just had no clue how to go about making a living or just living without being told what to do. And they were still afraid. My customer took me to a cafe that was located on the grounds of one of Ceaușescu old mansions. He spent the first few minutes after we sat down scanning the room. I asked him what he was looking for and he said cameras and microphones. Posted by: JackStraw at September 01, 2025 08:26 PM (viF8m) 108

We had our first trip to Jackson Hole and Tetons when our boys were in HS in FL. I was used to the West and snow, but, I think Montana is the coldest place, and I have been a few times since. But this one was like landing on Mars.
Anyway, the Delta pilot landed the 757 on a snow packed tarmac and we skidded some. It would not have mattered, I don't think, if it went off the runway as the snow was very, very deep that year. A record snow pack. I don't get rattled ever in a plane due to a wild flight in the early 80's after rolling both ways and the body of the plane dropping thouands of feet (before cell phones and attention. We all said a collective woo! as everything fell out of the bins and food went everywhere. One guy injured. The pilot got applause when we landed). Anyway, I said, "Quite a landing!" A pilot across the aisle from me said it was actually a good one! All the roads were packed hard snow. Super cold and I got new boots. I don't think they bother to plow in winters like that except in the spring. Awesome ski trip. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at September 01, 2025 09:50 PM (6PCLE) 264

England and America aren't lost. England might be further along the path to being lost than we are. But enough people can still get through their day without too much bullshit, especially if they aren't terminally online.
But.... England is rapidly reaching the point where that isn't true anymore, though. And so they are getting rowdy about it. It's that tipping point where the corrupt mutants and perverts in power have pissed off enough people that it matters.... America is still pretty far from that. Most of Europe is getting uncomfortably close. This is why revolutions aren't done On The Cheap. It's why Cloward Piven was always a lie. The whole "boil the frog slowly" thing is a myth. Revolutions happen around an artificial crisis point, crafted around a real crisis point, with planning done ahead of time. They have been making their own crisis point for years now, forgetting that the point of ruining a society is to revolt and create a new society, not to rule over absurd ruins. There was a guy that fed the wild geese and ducks. He fed them so often that they would come up in his yard for the tossed feed. Over the course of the year he would feed them from closer and closer to his house, eventually even into his garage. One day, after leading the large flock indoors, he shut the door. Had one of my boyfriends put a harness on me in college it would have helped a lot vs bringing me (from the South) up to blue slopes and giving me worthless snow plow lessons.
