While they were almost entirely eliminated in Europe in the late 1700s, legends about the spirits of gypsy penguins persist to this day. Putrid wells and purloined purses are often blamed on the mephitic metaphysical apparitions said to be found lurking in dank forests and abandoned outhouses.

Prior-topic, of course missed that thread, appropriate place to register my standard pointless objection ("your honor, I strenuously object!") about the pathetic framework and implications of "right" types regarding the Bolton raid/investigation of Mega-Scandal perps.
It's not, for a second, about two "wrongs". The first set of actions involved abuse of office, illegally obtained FISA warrants, unpredicated "investigations", ridiculous blackmailing (Flynn case), arguably seditious misbehavior by senior public officials, etc. The second set of actions is, simply, *investigating those prior illegal acts*. There's no overlap, no similarity whatsoever. So the always-dumb "enjoy the new rules!" idiocy from so many completely misstates the situation. There are no "new rules". The perps now under investigation almost certainly committed various serious crimes. That is, they broke the rules. Current investigation of them breaking laws in not "new rules". It's just investigating serious crimes. Lost cause, dumbing down of the country has lowered all boats, etc. Posted by: rhomboid at August 25, 2025 08:10 PM (U/Byj) 73

Diving at an island off Borneo decades ago, was exciting to see my first sea turtles. By the 4th or 5th dive, most of us found them sort of annoying - they were in the way, made it harder to see all the other amazing coral reef fauna and flora. Sort of like the grizzlies eating most of the salmon in May, but by September fileting them with their claws and just eating their favorite parts, I guess.

i WONDI wonder what SpaceX has for Launch Commit Criteria ( Ha! I didn't use LCC) for range weather conditions. NASA at KSC had a bunch of them that were developed over many years of observations and working with the NWS the FAA and universities.
One of the criteria had to do with the electric field strength in the air being less than 1000 volts per meter. The range had an array of electric field mill instruments that stretched for miles around the Cape Canaveral area monitoring the field strength. Posted by: pawn at August 25, 2025 08:16 PM (Tx/gC) 81
Here are a couple examples of 'we don't know.'
The Yoxford Boys of the 357th FG. There are no documents recording what they painted their bare metal Mustangs. Not even unit members like Merle Olmsted who wrote a unit history could say if it was Olive Drab over Neutral Gray or perhaps RAF Dark Green over Neutral Gray. The accepted wisdom is the later option. Or one of the squadrons of the fabled 56th FG, Zemke's Wolfpack. To this day there are three 'opinions' on what the top color for some of these P-47Ms were since no documents survive. First opinion is from one of the pilots who decades later claimed the planes were painted a dark plum color. Second opinion is they were painted black but the few surviving color photos show a blue tint and even in black&white the top color is noticeably lighter than the black of the propellor blades. Third opinion which is supported by the few color photos is the planes were painted a very dark blue. Posted by: Anna Puma at August 25, 2025 08:16 PM (SVpE3) 82

That was 12 - Conrad, Gordon, and Bean. They actually got hit twice. Knocked everything offline, except the Saturn rocket itself. They went into orbit laughing their ass off, because they couldn’t believe what just happened.
Any military aircraft has a gazillion caution and warning lights. You can light all of them up, every single one, (to make sure no bulbs are burnt out) in a test. It’s kind of pretty, all different shades of red, orange, green, yellow, etc, some are blinking, and various whirring and clicking noises. Very impressive. That’s basically what the crew of Apollo 12 saw. EVERY light lit up. Now these guys were test pilots, but nothing can prepare you for that. LOL Ole Pete dutifully listed off all the unpleasantness in a calm manner, but it wasn’t looking too good at that point. Oh, and in addition to all the lights, master warning audio tone, the 8-ball is spinning every which way. The audio is great to listen to. They were within a red nether hair to calling an abort, except for a young controller named John Aaron, who knew “SCE TO AUX” circuit breaker would clear the faults. I betcha he hasn’t had to buy a beer with his own money in a long time. Posted by: Common Tater at August 25, 2025 08:38 PM (lqKtE) 117

I don't think there are any new rules. I think Bolton, Comey, Brennan, Clapper, et. al., who are currently/reportedly "under investigation" will all walk away clean, as befits their station, because we're still living under the old rules. Those rules are: 1.) If Party men do it, it's legal, and; 2.) If real or perceived enemies of Party men do it, or don't do it, then they're as guilty as hammered sin. If these guys start getting locked up, then we have new rules. But that ain't gonna happen. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 25, 2025 08:48 PM (BI5O2) 133

Aaron was an engineer. With a curious mind. He had seen a certain pattern in the data on the screen in one of the simulation tests. He wondered why it did that? What caused those particular sets of gobbledygook numbers? He asked a technician and he walked him through it. Called a signal conditioner, it did a characteristic thing when the power went off line, and he observed it, and filed it away. Useless information? Well… maybe. But then a few weeks later, he saw those same numbers - in real life - and when NOBODY knew what the hell to do, a 24 year old says “SCE TO AUX” “What the hell is that?” But Al Bean knew where the circuit breaker was. Because he too, read the manual, and memorized stuff even when he didn’t have to. Ya never know Posted by: Common Tater at August 25, 2025 08:57 PM (lqKtE) 144

My twin brother's closest friend from 3d grade was Dave Reed, the voice of Houston in 1969. He was also the voice of Houston in some near disaster a few years later. (I was mothering infants at the time. Hazy recollection.) Got a presidential commendation, moved on to such things as dropping down into Africa to find out what really happened in Black Hawk Down. There were people who said he was the model for Kiefer Sutherland in 24 Hours. (Also a twin, BTW.)
When my twin went to the hospital for the last time, he asked me to call Dave. He kept us both cheered up for those last weeks--and died himself a matter of weeks later. I used to tell the two of them, I'd like to be a fly on the wall when you trade war stories. Now they are, and I'm here. Posted by: Wenda at August 25, 2025 09:17 PM (sz3LH) 158

Yes, that’s true. Aaron was in “charge” of battery power, basically. They had to power everything down, something that had never been intended in flight, and then power it back up right before re-entry.
But he had to go around to each section and ‘splain they weren’t going to leave their stuff on. Everybody had a reason why “you can’t turn this off”, some pretty good ones too, but they didn’t have any choice. I think they went from a normal DC current draw of 50 or 80 amperes down to less than 10, which is pretty remarkable. I think my old 60s pickup drew about 8 or 10 amps with all the lights on, ignition, etc. Posted by: Common Tater at August 25, 2025 09:30 PM (lqKtE) 172
