I imagine they're right: The "Maryland Man" probably barely speaks English. But that didn't stop him from running a profitable human-trafficking business in America.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Democrats' so-called "Maryland Man," on Monday for deportation proceedings. Homeland Security officials say the 30-year-old illegal alien, tied to MS-13 and accused of trafficking and abuse, is being processed for removal to Uganda.

A Department of Homeland Security statement confirmed that Garcia, "a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador," was arrested in Maryland and is now in ICE custody.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, "President Trump is not going to allow this illegal alien, who is an MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator to terrorize American citizens any longer."
Democrats have rallied around Garcia, framing the case as a "due process" fight, but polling shows the public overwhelmingly views him as a gang member, highlighting political risks for Democrats.

We were having this conversation the other day at work about one of Hahvud's legal clinics. They see their clients as vehicles for impact litigation to get results they can't get legislatively. Having worked in legal clinics as a baby lawyer, I can assure you that 90% of lawyers doing that are only looking for the experience. They don't give two shits about the "clients." I personally was trying to get experience but also hoping to do good. I was working with abused kids and women. I soon realized that it was almost impossible to save them. I only did it for a short time. I could easily see someone getting totally disillusioned about it and starting to not give a shit.

No cash bail is an abomination, because the idea is to hold something over your head, so you'll show up at trial. $50,000 bail means you put up $5,000. You get that back if you show up, minus the commission form the bail bondsman (maybe $500). If you skip, you lose $5k and the bondsman loses $50k. But the bondsman then employs people to track you down. Heck he may employ people to babysit you and make sure you show up.

It's a good deal all around, because at the bottom is forcing you to show up.

No cash bail means you no show the trial. And the bondsman is out of the picture, meaning the police have to track you down. It's how people can have multiple outstanding warrants.

I think that's part of it, but I think another part is true.

Outside of the far left, people don't care that much about Maria and her ilk.

They can express sympathy that Maria got picked up in an ICE raid going after a criminal and she just happened to be there, but ultimately, she's not family. It's like hearing that a factory got shut down a thousand miles away in another state. It's sad, but ultimately, it's not their concern.

And that's assuming they feel that sympathy to begin with. There's probably a lot of, "I don't give a fuck" going on. "I remember when going to CostCo didn't feel like going to a foreign country."

I learned early on...work the worst weather days of the year, when delivering pizza / food.

You always get the best tips and there's almost no traffic on the road.

So they whisk him away so there are no interviews and the case never has to go to trial.

They are painting them out to be such a menace. And he's never done anything wrong in this country.

They keep calling him a wife beater, and a human smuggler, he's never been indicted or convicted, unlike Trump. Plus, he only speaks Spanish, which right-wingers hate for some reason.

He was given the option to go to Costa Rica. I would have taken it. Sometimes you just can't fight the system. SCOTUS said Trump can deport people to Uganda. Unfortunately, Trump is going to make an example of him. It seems like immigrants have very few rights these days.

I wish him well, but I'm not optimistic.

That’s the theory. In practice everyone tips so waiters have no incentive to do a good job. On average I can’t say I experienced worse restaurant service win Europe vs home. I bought a Food Saver kit for my wife's past birthday. I explained to her that the gift was like her buying me a new stove/range top for Christmas. Now I have to train her to buy steaks at CostCo and freeze two thirds of the steaks while we eat the fresh steaks. BTW - the new stove/range top is all fucking digital with shit tons of buttons. I have not mastered the new technology.

I had a dryer with sealed touch buttons. The buttons pretty much broke in first year or so, and I found that replacing them was almost the cost of the dryer. I found workarounds for a while and then bought one without those controls.

Back in the late 70s there was a golf tournament in Las Vegas to raise money for muscular dystrophy IIRC.

Each for fourome was comprised of three NFL players and a celebrity. The local high school football coaches got to pick some of their players to caddy, and I was among those chosen.

I was really disappointed when I didn't get an NFL player to caddy for, but some old celebrity I'd never heard of named Joe Williams (turned out to be one of the greatest old jazz singers and lived in Las Vegas) -- a wonderful man.

My friends and I all compared tips at the end of the day. Most guys got $100, but I wouldn't trade my $20 and the experience to spend time with (at that time and unbeknownst to me) a living legend for anything ...
