First World Problems...

Frogcarrot2025.jpg

That is a commercial version of a classic French dish called Carottes Râpées. it's as simple as it gets; grated carrots, and some simple dressing.

So what's the problem?

The damned Frogs have special commercial machines that cut the carrots into tiny cylinders, which is the perfect texture for this dish! There are no simple home methods. A box grater works...okay. A food processor works...fast. But the commercial machines cut the carrots exactly as god intended.

Sure, they have home versions of the machines, but they look like Chinese crap.

And don't get me started on the mustard!

27 Mentioned this on the tech thread but thought I would try again.
TurboTax for 2025 taxes won't work on Windows 10, which is all we have for an OS. (I'm pissed but their software has always worked for us.) Instead of another desktop, we're looking at a laptop with a 14 inch screen or bigger. I'm looking for one machine that doesn't require a bunch of add ons to function or to assemble various parts to make a system. We don't need a high powered gaming machine. We don't even play solitaire on the computer. It's major uses will be doing the taxes, email, YouTube videos and web searches.

- No Cloud only storage. I want the information on the machine, not in the ether.
- I want a mouse or mouse pad, not a touch screen or touch screen only.
- It would be nice to be able to attach a CD or DVD player.
- Windows 11 and upgradeable to whatever the hell OS comes next.

We're not techies. Basically I just want a machine I can take out of the box, connect to our WiFi, and start using it.

Thanks for any suggestions on brand and model.

28 For 2 people:

3 carrots (about 250 g of grated carrots)

1 pinch of salt

1 pinch of pepper

2 tablespoons of lemon juice

1 teaspoon of mustard

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 teaspoon of honey

2 tablespoons of parsley
Peel the carrots, wash them and grate them. Wash the parsley, dry it and chop it

Put the salt, pepper, add the mustard, lemon juice and honey in a salad bowl. Mix well then pour the olive oil while whisking. Add the grated carrots, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and mix thoroughly to coat everything.

Taste and adjust according to your tastes. I like to add a pinch of Espelette pepper. To be redone often, by varying the herbs or adding a fruit like pear.

Go to newegg.com and search for refurbished laptops. You can filter for models with Windows 11. Currently I see several Dell and Lenovos there under $250.

Another possibility is looking at refurbished laptops at dell.com.

This is hard for sure - maybe one day of meal prep where you do 2 versions of a few simple meals to rotate through? Make and freeze a few different chicken breasts - for you, blackened, bbq, garlic and herb, etc. For her, salt, pepper, lemon juice. For example, Monday will be grilled chicken salad- make a fresh salad, you reheat your blackened chicken breast, she reheats her lemon one. Slice, top, eat. Tuesday can be pasta where you use a spicier sauce with sautéed veggies, and she just gets hers topped with the sautéed veggies and olive oil? Wednesday is bbq chicken, baked sweet potato (where you put cumin and chili powder on yours, she gets salt and pepper on hers), etc?

See what they say and what they prescribe. Do your research. A lot of the BP meds have been around a long time and do the trick. High blood pressure in no joke. But here’s the good part. Try to use them as a crutch to change your lifestyle. Eliminate sodium as much as you can, watch the foods you eat, increase foods that help reduce inflammation. And then get in an exercise routine. Start slow and easy walk (if you don’t already). I know a lot of people who were able to ditch them or greatly reduce the dose after making changes YMMV. Good luck and stop worrying;

You are correct. I have spent the last at least decade, taking care of everyone else. My kids. My patients. My friends. Covid sucked bigly.

Now I need to take care of myself. Cause no one else is going to do it.

The Blade has been on low dose amlodipine for years. Which is odd because I’m not old (Gen X) and in excellent shape. But there is heart disease in my family, so as soon as my BP went a little high and wouldn’t come down, they put me on it. If it wasn’t for my family’s history, I’d have said ‘no way’ — but the risk of heart disease is worse.

HBP meds are not that bad. With my cancer, HBP came hand in hand, and I've been on the same med at the same level for 5 years now.

Even then, I go to the doc and still put up skyhigh results. I didn't actually start HBP meds til my own taking of my pressure every day indicated it.

Like last week, before I got my current cancer blood results, I had 118/81 at home...and at the office waiting on the results 153/89. We now take pics of the pressure before we go...

Same. I'm probably older than you, but solidly in the middle of Gen X and been on 5 mg for about 7 years. I stopped taking it for awhile when I had no time to go to the doc (when I was still schlepping Mom to the doc all the time). When I finally went back, it was alarmingly high. So I might be on it forever. The doc who put me on it gave me the usual advice to help bring it down. But he also said, you might do everything right and still have high BP.

I hope I can avoid diabeetus, but I'm probably doomed by genetics + too many years of overindulging in sweets.

Very common to feel that way. I’m surrounded by a lot of type “a”’s who have been conditioned to believe that any meds, or even asking for help is a failure. So they avoid it like the plague, until they can’t. Don’t think of it as a failure. It’s a tune up. Maintenance. A direction change. In the end it’s a means to get stronger and better. That’s hard to conceptualize when you’re a person devoted to taking care of others. You feel selfish and perhaps even weak because not you need help. But that’s not the case. Remember you can’t help others if you don’t take care of yourself…

It is not really a fault, it is a problem. My wife insisted she did not need glasses for years, then she got cataract surgery with corrective lenses. She won't admit she needed glasses, but she can see the hills across the river now.

Losartan and Carvedilol is tolerated well, according to the literature. I have had very little problem with it, but they are pushing my BP low due to a stent. You might get a look at your liver enzymes and your insulin to see if you have metabolic syndrome. High BP is an indication there even if you have decent blood glucose
