Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Marinette.) 1. This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate. 2. Be kind be nice, remember to put yourself in the other guy's shoes. Slugs do have shoes. 3. No, you do not have any expressed or implied permission to run with sharp objects. So get that idea out of your mind. 4. Have a great weekend!

“ Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Remember that only 5-8% of cancers are genetic. That leaves a lot of room for other things to be disease vectors. Watch your diet and every thing you put in your mouth. Go basic and organic where you can. There are a lot of bad things in seemingly innocuous foods like, say, oatmeal that’s not organic. Filter your water. Eat foods that increase your gut biodome, act as anti inflammatories or boost your immune system. Most of all increase your activity. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Do one thing at a time increasing your changes over time. You also don’t need to run a marathon. Go out. Walk. Breath the air and enjoy Gods creation. Thank him every day, and ask him for strength.

@23/SpeakingOf: "Is it just me or have cancer rates exploded in the past few years? I know it has around me, personally."
It has, and part of that is (I suspect) things like the long term exposure of radiation we did to ourselves with all of the atomic weapons tests. Look up "Low-background steel" and the reason why steel produced today always has a weak radioactive signature: It's the very air used in the process which is now slightly more radioactive than it was before those tests. Since we're breathing that air, those radionuclides (or radioactive isotopes) are going to affect us as well, just like they affect the steel in the refinement process. It's not like we're all going to drop dead suddenly, but an increase in cancers as a result of increased radioactive isotopes in our environment seems to be a reasonable expectation. Further, there's all the things in our dried, preserved, and processed foods that while they keep things for us longer, also might have negative cumulative effects. It's a trade-off. We have the Baby Boomer generation that's aging out and passing away, and cancer is one of those "If nothing else gets you, that one will" things. CO gray wolf reintroduction update:
Two days ago the CO legislature voted to pause the gray wolf program "temporarily", so that there will be no. new wolves brought to the state for next year. The money originally allocated for the wolf program will be diverted to pay for transgender treatments at Childrens Hospital Colorado, among other healthcare funding shortfalls. https://is.gd/h5QCXa The funny thing about this budgetary diversion is that the money saved by not bringing apex predators to our ranching communities will be $264,268. This amount is intended to offset a health care funding shortfall of $1.2 billion. $1,200,000,000. $260k will go a long way toward balancing that, right? Just a suggestion to the folks of religious faith. If you haven't done so yet, please consider writing out an obituary for the funeral home before you go to be with the Lord. A dear woman in the church I serve recently diex ( Thanks for the prayers for J)
Her daughter provided an obituary for the funeral home which talked about her love for animals and social occasions. That's great, but the nice daughter who lived at a distance was not really religious and didn't go to church and wasn't a member of the church. Her mother, on the other hand, had attended church since she was a kid and was a woman of faith and prayer but the obituary didn't mention that. I will of course, bring that up in her memorial service at the funeral home ( she wasn't a church member of the served but she started attending when Covid restrictions closed down her church) but I think J would have liked that . And no, it had nothing to do with contributions to the church because that wasn't mentioned either. A simple "her faith was important to her" would have been nice. @53/Skip: "... noticed coffee in larger container of coffee last week was up to $20"
Same here, in the $20 to $30 range. These things used to be $9 regularly, and $6 on special. We've significantly cut down on the coffee we drink as a result. A 3x increase in price on something just hurts. It'll eventually sort itself out on issues affecting production, but I suspect we'll never see the prices we saw before, even if we have a bountiful supply, partly due to inflation overall, and in small part due to some companies taking the stance of "They were willing to pay it before, let's slowly edge the price back until we find the optimal point on the Laffer Curve, and then we'll hold it there and go no lower except for when we run a special sale." Posted by: Bulg at August 23, 2025 08:42 AM (77rzZ) August typical is 95+ for Houston. Fortunately, the proximity of the Gulf of America's humidity moderates the summer temps from Dallas' typical 100+ Texas Plains temps (it's a dry heat). OTOH, the humidity reservoir makes Jan - Feb temps feel that much colder, penetrating right to your bones with a damp chill. The exterior mold and mildew loves it though, so there's that. I think back to how many people in my extended family died of cancer and it was pretty small. Heart attacks were the big cause of death for my great-grandparent's generation.
Cancer took 1 of my 4 grandparents, and did it in his late 80s. Two of my aunts had or have cancer at much younger ages and one of my cousins' kids had it in adolescence. Something is definitely not right. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 23, 2025 08:55 AM (ZOv7s) 102

We had someone in our family pass away "unexpectedly" this week. This was one of the three people in our lives who were downright creepy about haranguing me and my husband about getting the shots, telling us we were going to die if we didn't and that we weren't obeying God.
She developed heart and circulatory issues and kept getting hospitalized every October or November since 2021. (What medical treatment is usually administered in the fall?) No autopsy, but evidence suggests she died of a blood clot despite being on blood thinners. And nobody ever made the connection, even though it was weird seeing a formerly vigorous person undergo a huge decline every fall. Her daughter is devastated. I think the increase in cancers can be partially attributed to better/more screening and detection. Plus a population more agreeable to said screening as it's likely fairly routine. Even if you don't have any symptoms.

Prayers for my 'adopted' grandbaby and his parents if you please: At the beginning of summer they fostered a brother and sister that are older than their natural child. In the 1980s 180 apartment complexes were built in Taiwan that inadvertently used recycled steel in the structural components of the buildings that had been contaminated with Co-60 (half life 5.3 years).
About 10,000 people lived in the apartments from 9 to 20 years before the contamination was discovered. When scientists went to study the effects of this additional low level background radiation (0.4 Sv, a “collective dose” of 4,000 Person-Sv) on the affected apartment dwellers they discovered something unsuspected: the apartment dwellers had fewer cancers themselves and fewer birth defects in their children than the numbers expected from the Taiwan population generally! Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at August 23, 2025 09:36 AM (qdIj7) --- Maybe the distractions are the point. When I say a Rosary, I rarely focus on the mystery at hand for more than a few seconds because my mind immediately wanders into other matters - fear about this one thing, hope about another, confusion about what to do. I've learned to go with it. I continue to recite the prayers, and if it leads me to an idea about what to do about the car, or how to handle a situation with my kid, that's God opening up pathways for me. At this point, my go-to method for big decisions is to grid out the options, sleep on it, and say a Rosary - not always in that order, of course. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. They don't want to accept that Evil is the absence of Goodness. They also conflate natural disasters with Evil. While it's not fun at the time, there is a real salvific value to suffering. It is an opportunity to either give or receive unconditional love. For example, after Mom died and the Old Man declined into dementia, I eventually realized that it was a gift. The Old Man and I became much more emotionally closer (we were not estranged, but too much alike: Type A Personalities at tended to be correct but with too little tact) before he died. Evangelical atheists are a tiresome bunch, and usually spectacularly ill-informed.
My go-to response is that there is more historical evidence of Jesus Christ and his miracles than Julius Caesar existing at all. If one is going to logic and reason, be consistent. One can't just handwave miracles (including ones with tens of thousands of witnesses like Fatima) because you don't like it. Our current governor in Georgia is, at best, GOPe, and also tolerated the cheats in both 2020 and 2022, but he did not allow a statewide mandate to get the clot shot. I never did get the shot and am glad for that. Many of my neighbors did, against my advice, when asked, and they now regret it. It seems like the only people getting COVID now are the ones who got the shot and boosters. I had the original alpha version and the omicron variant. I believe, for various reasons, the omicron variant was released to shut down the spread of COVID-19 (omicron had bits and pieces of all the previous versions such that a healthy immune system could fight off all variants afterwards). Also omicron was milder than previous variants. That people are still getting COVID suggests that they have damaged immune systems.

Even some of the most brilliant minds tend to hedge their bets when faced with their own immediate mortality. Johnny Von Neumann famously perplexed his fellow physicists on his deathbed.
Kurt Gödel famously “proved” the existence of God mathematically, but I’ll not try to follow along with the theorem. But it’s clear to me throughout history that many famous minds were men and women of great faith. Religion is also blamed for a great many wars or genocides, but it looks more to me like to get the real slaughterfests going throughout the past they are generally pagans, atheists, and truly perverted tyrants with their own ideas on how things should go. It was a mixed bag and ultimately a failure because even purple states (like Michigan) ended up repealing the laws that enabled tyranny. I keep bringing this up, but Michigan's police uniformly took a pass at enforcing the edits. The governor ranted, the AG wailed, and the sheriffs and local cops shrugged. The entire might of the state descended on a barber in Owosso and shop on the west coast and...failed. Now the Dems got re-elected, but that was because Biden's FBI faked a kidnapping, and the truth is going to wreck all of them because they knew it was fake at the time. Trump is of course timing the official release of this for maximum damage. But the real failure is in the collapse of medical authority. Vaccine intakes have collapsed. Trust in medicine is at all-time lows, and of course MAHA is wrecking Big Pharma. A Pyrrhic victory at best. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 23, 2025 10:03 AM (ZOv7s) 219

Among those teachings (though we will not hear it during Ordinary Time this year) is Jesus’s instruction on how to pray as He gives us the Lord’s Prayer. This is such a profound prayer, but sadly, due to it’s familiarity, we can often just recite it There were two individuals walking together, one of whom had a horse that belonged to him. They were discussing the difficulty of staying attentive during prayer. The man with the horse shared how he can’t even make it through the Our Father without getting distracted. The other man laughed, as he was convinced that he could keep focused through the entire recitation of this simple, short prayer. The man with the horse said: “Ok, let’s make a deal. If you can pray the Lord’s Prayer without getting distracted, I’ll give you this horse.” The other man smiled and gladly accepted the challenge, and he began: “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hollowed be thy name.” At this point, he stopped and asked the man with the horse: “Does the saddle come with the horse?”

Evangelical atheists are a tiresome bunch, and usually spectacularly ill-informed.
My go-to response is that there is more historical evidence of Jesus Christ and his miracles than Julius Caesar existing at all.... Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 23, 2025 09:53 AM (ZOv7s) Bart Ehrman immediately comes to mind. He's a guy that went into Moody(?) University with faulty understanding of Scripture (he came from a Christian denomination in which he was taught as a child that God had dictated the books of the Bible). He encounters variant Gospels (i.e, a word change or spelling error by the scribe, not the Gnostic Gospels - those are a different thing), and has such a crisis of faith that he becomes an Evangelical Atheist. But he's a duplicitous little $h!t, writing one thing for serious Biblical scholars and a different thing for lay people. So, as I lay abed, tired after last night's feasting and festivities, I started thinking I ought to get up so I can list all the books I got for my birthday, and then I remembered, it's not Bookday, it's Prayerandcoffeeday. Whew.
Daisy the jet-propelled Malinois took me for a leisurely walk. Now I've poured a cup of coffee and I'm ready to be a Moron. 🐕🚶♂️ Speaking of petitioning the Lord with prayer (despite what Jim Morrison said), this coming Tuesday morning, they're going to poke at my heart and see if they can improve its functioning. Perfectly routine, I'm told; they do this thousands of times a year. Yeah? Well, this is the only heart I've got and I'm kinda fond of it. The chutzpah of modern medical wizards thinking they can improve on the Creator's design. And yet, sometimes they actually do some good. 😁 Tally ho, y'all. Into the post and comments I ride. Atheists should ponder it this way:
We live in a vast mysterious universe, perhaps a multiverse. The more we learn in scientific observation, the more mysterious it all becomes, from the quantum level to scale of universe(s). I believe that there is intelligent life outside of our solar system, somewhere. So think of God as an alien being, similar to Q from Star Trek, omnipotent, omnipresent, but without the trickster nature of that fictional god. You simply can’t rule out that possibility even if you don’t believe in human organized religion. Perhaps, as is often believed by many, we are created beings in a created universe, and that life is a school, a test, in which our souls learn and grow and contribute to the larger whole for some purpose we cannot understand until that souls is freed and enters another ‘dimension’ we have giving the name of Heaven. Atheists get hung up on what they consider myths instead of considering the possibilities. They need proof when they should simply contemplate what the meaning of it all is, and why God is not only real but necessary to explain the nature of existence and the reasons for it. Atheists blaming religion for wars might just as well blame breathing.
All societies throughout history have had some sort of faith, and would draw upon it in times of turmoil and strife. Often religion was used as a cloak for other things, like pure greed, or joy in violence. And yes, actual atheists are actually the worst because not only to the wage war on others, they wage their worst wars on their own people. A lot of people love to blame religion for most wars, but it’s simply not true.
Most wars are over resources, ideological conflicts, and/or self-protection from conquest. Little did I know it would be another 2 years for 1/2 the country to figure it out. Some corporate places had every other table closed off and shit like that. And Walmart insisted on masks. There was a lot of that around. But that wasn’t the government enforcing it. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at August 23, 2025 11:02 AM (4HxCT) 296

---------- There's a large horse farm nearby. They board/train Quarter Horses. They keep them away from the fenced in field near the road, but periodically several will be out there. Beautiful horses. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 23, 2025 11:06 AM (Q4IgG) 300

@295 And all the authority figures and pundits that bleated on about "the new normal" haven't mentioned how that's going since then. It was clear to me they spoke incessantly of it because they wanted their insanity to become the norm for everyone else.

Secretariat still holds the record for all three Triple Crown races. His Belmont time will never be broken, unless by a robot horse. When he died they found his heart was two times the size of a normal horses. Not diseased just huge

I remember Jane D'Oh had a vacation rental all set up in FL that she was worried about. But it is true that FL was one of the first to drop all the crazy restrictions; however, I give more credit to Dr. Ladapo for that. DeSantis was smart to follow his advice. Fenelon, usually the funeral home obits are online and have a section to comment. That is a respectful way to add in on your and her experience.

Yes Lamplighter is Christian Scientist. Yes, he has occasionally posted on his site small bits about his vision, but infrequently, and without much detail. I originally wrote Wright was warned in his vision not to say too much about his vision, and inexpertly edited that.

I got lucky in that my employer accepted my religious exemption request. Though I suspect they didn't want to deal with a raft of religious persecution lawsuits.
the govt. has paid out 54 million dollars so far in EEOC claims due to the jab religious exemptions denied medical exemptions denied, and I imagine other causes of action Posted by: kallisto at August 23, 2025 11:39 AM (dCxaZ) 317

Both Lamplighter and Wright’s writing have been influenced by their Christian beliefs. Lamplighter’s character Rachel Griffin of the Unexpected Enlightenment of Rachel Griffin series has shown a Christ-like willingness for self-sacrifice. Also the Lion of Judah has made the occasional appearance in the series. It is set in another world’s equivalent of Hogwart’s. As for Wright, I recommend his novella, One Bright Star to Guide Them, which should have won the Hugo the year it was nominated (2015 Spokane Worldcon - if you know, you know) and did win a Dragon award that year. It asks the question, what happens after you return from that other world through the wardrobe and grow up? What then?

"And I not do not pray." Lord , please stop boobapalozza." Which would be a silly prayer."
Well, axeshully no. As "Pride" is condemned in scripture...so is "Lust." Just sayin'. People certainly can live as they choose...and do. But some choices are a little iffy..."I have made a covenant with my eyes..." "...has committed adultery already in his heart..." "Flee youthful lusts..." but that's all just so analog these days, what with modern culture setting us free from closed mindedness. However, with "open minds" there's the risk that brains just fall out. The lady could have added a few more inches of cloth to her neckline and still been comfortable and pretty. What's the point of nearly bare in public? Just go full Kanye and be done with it. Okay, I'll show myself out. Posted by: ju at August 23, 2025 12:20 PM (vgX6l) 320

Praying that people be more chaste in word and thought in action and less prideful is generally is not the same as praying that the horde stops posting this stuff which would probably be a wasted endeavor . And yes, for the naysayers here I am aware that I am a sinner and ask pardon daily Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 23, 2025 12:25 PM (2GCMq) 322

Yeah, I get that. 'Pretty Lady Almost Wearing A Dress' today's pic; Focus on the Family founder, James Dobson died yesterday. He once served on a committee, organized to analyze pornography's effect on the nation, and had to endure piles of what is termed, "Art," (wink) "Free Speech," (wink) and listen to victim testimonies. After many months, Dobson was grieved and heart sick with it all. He wearily got up from his desk and walked over to the office window, where he observed a wrecking ball, swinging heavily against a nearby building, knocking pieces to the ground bit by bit, piling rubble higher and higher onto the street. He told radio listeners, "I thought to myself, that's what they're doing to our country." -Sigh- Posted by: ju at August 23, 2025 02:31 PM (vgX6l) 324
