>>This small, jewel-like devotional painting was made as a gift for Ingres’s friend Louise Marcotte, who introduced the artist to Delphine Ramel, whom he married in 1852. The Raphaelesque composition is based on one Ingres first painted in 1841 for the future czar Alexander II, which includes the two patron saints of Russia, Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas (Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow). For this version, Ingres replaced the Russian saints with two French ones. He would go on to paint four more variants, as well as, in 1855, a watercolor for Madame Ingres herself (Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Mass.). (MET)

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at August 28, 2025 09:39 AM (kkTda) 25

A different take on Mary after Christ's crucifixion. Usually shown in grief, here she is realizing, in peace and with calm regard, that her son is not dead but lives in her and everyone. The host is the brightest part of the scene, pure and perfect. Her face and posture is natural even though idealized. The angels, with their hint of a halo, are setting up the alter. Even the string of flowers behind Mary, in the shadow, are blooming, full of life. Everything is calm, positive and points to living, not death. Remarkable. It makes me want to go to mass to share the feelings in the painting.
I don't recall any other painting that portrays the host in any way, let alone as the center. Posted by: JTB at August 28, 2025 09:50 AM (yTvNw) 50

One of the not small reasons I love Rome is that the city is chock full of churches, and those churches are all full of art like this. Just, turn a corner, there will be a church that's been standing there for 300 years at least, and it's got Renaissance masterworks lining every wall of every chapel, most of it completely ignored by people who even wander in to look. [In the painting The Virgin Adoring the Host by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, the "host" refers to the Eucharistic bread, symbolizing the body of Christ. It is depicted as a silver coin placed on a golden candle stand, which the Virgin Mary is adoring with rapt attention. - G Gordon said back in his day, men were men and baked their own potatoes. He and the other kids would poke holes in a tin can and attach string. They'd put twigs in, light them on fire, insert a potato, and swing it vigorously to act as a bellows heating the fire and baking the potato. I guess they had strong arms because it takes a while to bake a potato. (No word on where they got the butter and sour cream.) Anyway, he transferred that concept to the censor. Nice but not a fan. For spiritual worship and awe, Barocci's St. Francis, in NYC's Met Museum, is hard to beat. 98- thank you for the link. People who don't know anything about Catholicism miss out on the nuance, skill and power of our art. Years ago I was at the Met with the Sikh wife of my husband's friend. She was an art restorer. In the medieval section, right at the entrance is a stunning carved wooden statue of the Madonna and Child.
https://tinyurl.com/3bne7dyd It levels me how the sculptor took a very common episode in the life of every mom teaching her baby to read; the faraway look in her eyes tells it all. My friend was ready to move on but I wasn't. She asked why and I said, "Because she's teaching her baby to read knowing all the while that some day He will die on the cross." My friend took a step back and almost shouted "You mean she KNEW???" I think I'll stop by today and take another look at it, the day after the modern recreation of the Massacre of the Innocents. This time around, with more Herods. Posted by: vivi at August 28, 2025 10:41 AM (qj69p) 135

Unfortunately for her, lending and bank regulation is part of the Fed's role and having her as a governor over such is like having a prosecutor who committed crimes before being in office.
