22 Miss Linda dragged me to a seminar on "genetic genealogy" at the library last night, and got herself hoist on her own petard. The session was *dull.* Linda herself has gone through these introductory steps already; nothing new there. And the speaker, though a pleasant lady, spent a lot of time logging into her email to receive login codes to the Ancestry and 23andMe websites, to show us what those platforms could do. There's not much duller than that.

I wound up doodling, filling in blanks, and sketching on the seminar handout as if I were bored silly in fourth grade again.

This genealogy stuff does not interest me. I never cared about genetics in school; none of my ancestors were notable for anything; and I'm focused on the future, leaving here and buying a house and starting a new life, while this is all about the past. Meh.

25 I thought that this was a lovely quote from Amy
Carmichael ( 1867- 1951) who was an Englishwoman who was a missionary in India and founded a children's home in Tinnevelly. After her forced retirement due to arthritis she gained popularity through her devotional books. Embedded within these are a few simple prayers of great depth. ( Commentary by Robert Van de Weyer from the HarperCollins Book of Prayer

May thy grace, O Lord, make that possible to me which seems impossible to me by nature.

No, no kids. And I've always been aware that I've inherited and/or learned certain traits from my parents -- esp. my father -- that I'm not proud of. A lot of my life has been filled with attempts to improve on or avoid that inheritance/learning.

It'd be more interesting, this ancestor stuff, if I'd heard stories about grandparents and g-grands from my parents. But my father told me almost zilch about his family, and Mom's memories were of her parents; I don't think she knew her grandparents at all. While my ancestors were apparently respectable working- and middle-class people, none of them invented or patented anything, wrote anything, painted anything, or created any businesses.

I've had a hint that my paternal grandfather's first marriage (ca. 1900) was to a sociopath who committed actual frauds and crimes before he divorced her to marry my grandmother. But that's the only colorful story I've run across.

Yeah, where do experienced tech people come from? They don't just grow on a tree. I guess companies expect you to get your entry level experience at some other company first, but if every company has the same attitude...

Personnel is the highest or close to the highest ongoing cost a company has, so it's logical for them to look there for cost savings but the shortsightedness of chasing the next quarterly earnings report is killing or has killed many industries.

When did quarterly earnings become so important to Wall Street? I don't remember it being so prominent when I was growing up.

Gave Diana her dinner at 6:00 yesterday evening. After finishing, she let me know it was time for her to go out. So I let her and her aunt Dot out into the pen off the back porch.

Unbeknownst to me, there was a thunderstorm brewing and while the girls were taking care of their business, there was a tremendous and simultaneous flash/bang. Got them inside posthaste, but Diana was terrified, shaking and yelping; she likes neither thunder nor fireworks.

Out of concern for bloat, I shoved two GasX down her throat and we retired to the bedroom so she could take some comfort in having me nearby. But she was a long time calming down.

I dimly recall jokes about the John Birch Society on TV variety and talk shows in the Sixties. I had no idea then what it really stood for, or until now that it was named for a Christian pastor.

The principles outlined on their website, in the main, sound like the kind of things we talk about here.

I guess companies expect you to get your entry level experience at some other company first, but if every company has the same attitude

Have you not read job descriptions recently? Every position seems to be entry-level with 10 years of experience.

I bumped into that, literally, in 2001, when a Tiffany-Amber at a tech company stated actually that. Me: "I know Visual Basic Version N." T-A: "We are looking for two years' experience with Version N+2." "N+2 hasn't been out for two years yet." "Well, that's what they'e looking for."

Clueless management/HR people doing the job descriptions. If they asked the actual worker bees for input this wouldn't happen. For the initial interview for my current job, they had several of the actual workers in the call asking me technical questions. It was a refreshing experience and made me feel good about agreeing to the job offer in the end.

109 The current crop of C-suite denizens is mismanaging the most significant part of their company wealth - the employees.

MBAs get some of the blame, but compensation of executives is very short-sided. The business schools are not helping.

Seems to me, a true ESOP, if kept small, would work. They don't seem to scale, but that might be a goal to not get too big.

112 To be fair, the details around John Birch's murder are murky. At the time he was a USAAF intelligence officer serving with the 14th Air Force in China. And where he vanished before dying was in territory controlled by Mao's Communist forces.

So, the easiest explanation was the Communists killed him.

A significant portion of job postings are fraudulent anyway. Posting for positions that don't exist to imply that the company is growing. Requirements so specific that it's clear they're looking to fill internally. You'll either never hear anything about your application ever again, or it will be rejected within hours by some bot.

Corporations are asshoe. You're just a cost to them. CEOs and their HR mistresses are looking to replace everyone with AI. It's a good thing I decided to retire and do contract work.

He spent the whole time laughing his ass off cuz the facilities guys would light a fire and call it away and we'd have it out before it could spread. They made us wait five minutes to start the engine room fire and we still had the whole thing out in another three.
