Growing up, VA had a two-age drinking law. When I turned 18, I could buy beer, but I had to wait until I was 21 to buy liquor. It was great in college. After I turned 21, they changed the beer law to 21.

I was 19 in Wyoming (1985), which was cool. WY was among the last to knuckle under on the drinking age thing.

Moved to Alaska, where I missed the grandfather clause by one fucking month. But, for some reason, I had no problems obtaining beer. The 1980s were pretty chill.

Yes, amazing trip. You are lucky. I took my mom for her birthday. My brother and his wife also came. My mom’s mother (my grandmother, duh) went to Galapagos decades ago on an archeological expedition, before it opened up to tourists. It was very cool to retrace her steps.

I'm not seeing the utility - in holding a hammer, the thumb is driving the handle into a pocket made by the palm and fingers. If there was an extra thumb, this pocket would be blocked by the other hammer or the fingers would have to be straight out and blocking everything.

I had a long time to think about fingers when I had a broken wrist/arm and surgery and had to rehab since the hand and fingers had forgotten how to move.

Tide started coming in and the break was going away, so we found one last good wave to ride in. Saw the funniest thing on a golf course a couple years ago. There was this water feature with a bunch of Canada Geese and the group ahead of us hit a golf ball down near it. We were waiting on them to finish the hole so we were watching. The guy lumbers down towards the pond, gets to his ball, and promptly gets stormed by at least 10 geese flying out of the water and then doing that sliding landing on the grass all around him. The dude was swinging his club and running for all he was worth. My buddies and I were, literally, rolling around on the grass laughing. After that entertainment, we couldn't get mad at the guys for playing so slowly. True entertainment.

I think it's safe to assume this goes well beyond the Clintons. Many, many people have been getting rich off the government for a long time and many of them are still there.

All we see from out here is the surface but there are thousands of people in the government and thousands more in NGOs and connected businesses who have profited and enabled. According to Solomon, Hillary was doing favors for foreign governments as Sec of State and getting millions for it. The the Clinton Health Access Initiative was making bank pushing AIDS drugs all over the 3rd world.

Trump has made great strides so far but the swamp is very wide and very deep.

If you ever find yourself in Rotterdam, you can spend a night on the SS Rotterdam. It was of similar vintage and its been turned into a floating hotel, restaurant, bar, etc..

I stayed there for a few nights and it was a blast. Obviously, a lot of the amenities no longer exist but you can see how much more elegant cruise travel was back in the day.

And despite the heavy Slavic influence on it, isn’t the name Romanian basically staking a claim to be Roman? There is a Spanish philological train of thought identifying Spanish as a Koine used as a trading language, mixing Aragonese with a bit of Catalan, all spoken with Basque pronunciation.
It is an interesting theory, that depends on regional languages and how trade was done from southern France to northern Spain through the Basque countries.
Spanish is a constructed language that was intended to knit the Spanish peninsula together after the reconquista, and there is a lot of questions about how it was supposed to have been created - it is far more rigid than any naturally developing language in pronunciation and verb tensing.

As part of the Romantic culture and "peoples" movements in the 1800s, following the Hungarian and Germanic movements in this direction, Romanian was re___d as a Latinate language, with a lot of the Slavic intentionally dropped as a statement of cultural orientation. It sort of worked -- Better supposedly than the Greek movement back to classical Greek
