No Surprise: 88% of Students Confess They Pretend to be Left-Wing Just to be Left Alone

It's not a surprise, but I'm glad there's confirmation. We can only roll back this evil once it is acknowledged.

On today's college campuses, students are not maturing -- they're managing. Beneath a facade of progressive slogans and institutional virtue-signaling lies a quiet psychological crisis, driven by the demands of ideological conformity.
Between 2023 and 2025, we conducted 1,452 confidential interviews with undergraduates at Northwestern University and the University of Michigan. We were not studying politics -- we were studying development. Our question was clinical, not political: "What happens to identity formation when belief is replaced by adherence to orthodoxy?"
We asked: Have you ever pretended to hold more progressive views than you truly endorse to succeed socially or academically? An astounding 88 percent said yes.
These students were not cynical, but adaptive. In a campus environment where grades, leadership, and peer belonging often hinge on fluency in performative morality, young adults quickly learn to rehearse what is safe.
The result is not conviction but compliance. And beneath that compliance, something vital is lost.
Late adolescence and early adulthood represent a narrow and non-replicable developmental window. It is during this stage that individuals begin the lifelong work of integrating personal experience with inherited values, forming the foundations of moral reasoning, internal coherence, and emotional resilience.

Of course, this is the whole point: You can only mold impressionable minds, not older, more mature minds whose beliefs and political leanings are already set.

But when belief is prescriptive, and ideological divergence is treated as social risk, the integrative process stalls. Rather than forging a durable sense of self through trial, error, and reflection, students learn to compartmentalize. Publicly, they conform; privately, they question -- often in isolation. This split between outer presentation and inner conviction not only fragments identity but arrests its development.
This dissonance shows up everywhere. Seventy-eight percent of students told us they self-censor on their beliefs surrounding gender identity; 72 percent on politics; 68 percent on family values. More than 80 percent said they had submitted classwork that misrepresented their views in order to align with professors. For many, this has become second nature -- an instinct for academic and professional self-preservation.
To test the gap between expression and belief, we used gender discourse -- a contentious topic both highly visible and ideologically loaded. In public, students echoed expected progressive narratives. In private, however, their views were more complex. Eighty-seven percent identified as exclusively heterosexual and supported a binary model of gender. Nine percent expressed partial openness to gender fluidity. Just seven percent embraced the idea of gender as a broad spectrum, and most of these belonged to activist circles.
Perhaps most telling: 77 percent said they disagreed with the idea that gender identity should override biological sex in such domains as sports, healthcare, or public data -- but would never voice that disagreement aloud. Thirty-eight percent described themselves as "morally confused," uncertain whether honesty was still ethical if it meant exclusion.
Authenticity, once considered a psychological good, has become a social liability. And this fragmentation doesn't end at the classroom door. Seventy-three percent of students reported mistrust in conversations about these values with close friends. Nearly half said they routinely conceal beliefs in intimate relationships for fear of ideological fallout. This is not simply peer pressure -- it is identity regulation at scale, and it is being institutionalized.

How am I supposed to interpret that? Is it that students can't "mature" because the live in a confusing fugue state so they don't get canceled, kicked out, failed or murdered? My oldest participates in public school band and sports. Otherwise, we home school, including classical curriculum.

I had the occasion to overhear one of the band girls say she is part of the LGBTQ community, and she was wearing cat ears.

That is part of why we will continue to home school at least until his self-concept, morality, and ability to think critically are firmly established. Do not let this destructive ideology into your home. Not even for a minute.

I think it can safely be assumed that the overwhelming majority of shopkeepers never think about the slogans they put in their windows, nor do they use them to express their real opinions. That poster was delivered to our greengrocer from the enterprise headquarters along with the onions and carrots. He put them all into the window simply because it has been done that way for years, because everyone does it, and because that is the way it has to be. If he were to refuse, there could be trouble. He could be reproached for not having the proper decoration in his window; someone might even accuse him of disloyalty. He does it because these things must be done if one is to get along in life. It is one of the thousands of details that guarantee him a relatively tranquil life “in harmony with society,” as they say.

64 Oh, crap. I didn't get that memo. I was on an away trip for Tennis in college on one of the days you picked next semester's courses, and got lumped involuntarily into an Urban Studies class. No embellishment, I was the only Caucasian that class.

Prof was a black female with issues. She used do discuss something and then go "And does our white student have any opinion on that?", knowing what she said previously would be hard to agree with.

I do recall one such time saying, "You keep calling me white, but I think I'm more of an off beige. And, looking around I don't see anyone with actual black skin, just different shades of brown, of which beige is a very light shade of brown. And, no, I have nothing to add."

Got an A in that class somehow. Prof turned out to be kind of funny once you got to know her, and hand some back. Waste of time for educational purposes, but made a few friends that semester.

After 3 months on the job as a PT RBT, she got pissed a pretty-far-away client was canceling (so she wasn't getting paid), so I convinced her to apply to a few FT jobs (including a FT RBT job placement in a special private autistic school), and she got that FT job today. She's so excited and now anxious, b/c she's never had to tell a company she's quitting before - so she's feeling guilty. But I said why feel guilty b/c you told them you weren't happy when the client canceled, but they didn't let you swap clients to a closer client, so you gave them notice, decided you could do better, and now have. Needless to say, dad and I are relieved and feel she's now fully launched - certifications, benefits, no school debt, and a FT job at 22...better than 57% of all college grads this year, I think.

There was literally nothing marked wrong on my paper so I went to the TA who was teaching the course. What he said was, "I didn't like what you wrote and how you said it."

College was about learning to give people what they want. Politics had taken center stage (and gotten stupid), but I had a prof who totally disagreed with my take on the Holy Roman Empire's development during the 1200s and said I came off like a poly sci major, which I was. I caustically asked him if he would prefer a straight chronology of the Imperial succession to a discussion of the larger forces at work and he snapped "Yes."

Back then it was blue books, and so before I even looked at the questions, I wrote out the succession of the Empire in the margins, and only then read the questions.

He gave me 4.0. A lot of it is just about dominance, period.

It's a rare comment I make. He's always been slow to wake and talk. I am awake and alert at 0400 (which I hate with a passion when I do this). I think his loud eating is due to two things: one, he is barely awake. Two: I am very awake and like complete silence.

If he ate louder at dinner to tick me off he knows I'd just laugh.

When we argue at all it is over stupid stuff. Like the name of SIL's yappy dog who died. Then we laugh and wonder why on earth we are arguing over the stupid dog we did not even like. Altho we are pretty confident her dogs are weird due to her.

My middle kid did a year at a prestigious art school. She got good grades, but more than the classes she learned that the whole place was made up of certifiable lunatics.

The only person she could have a reasonable conversation with was a closeted gay prof, who felt remorse over his lifestyle. Because he work a St. Michael medal, he recognized her as a "friendly."

When she decided to drop out, I fully supported her. She's in the Guard, so college was free.

I had a few profs/TAs that were happy for the opportunity to engage in debate instead of printing mindless drones that simply regurgitated their own points back to them.

I also had many that absolutely docked my grades for not receiving their wisdom as gospel. They made sure to torch my gpa before I came to the obvious realization that I should've been dropping courses as soon as a prof started going political.

Have to say, I'm not a big fan of Government officials being able to set up non-profit criminal defense funds. It allows totally anonymous sources to fund the endeavor, and that could be anything from tax payer funds circuitously funneled through other non-profits to foreign govts. to off the books intelligence agency assets. It could even be quid pro quo from industries he assisted with legislation in the past.

I don't like the process.

Have to say, I'm not a big fan of Government officials being able to set up non-profit criminal defense funds. It allows totally anonymous sources to fund the endeavor, and that could be anything from tax payer funds circuitously funneled through other non-profits to foreign govts. to off the books intelligence agency assets. It could even be quid pro quo from industries he assisted with legislation in the past.

I don't like the process.

It happened in real time. I got out just under the wire.

As a non-communist on campus, my experience was that it was okay. There were some profs I needed to avoid, and I dropped one class because the professor told us on day 1 that if you weren't a communist, she'd mark you down. But mostly, I was a curiosity. That weirdo who wasn't a red or a lib.

The Obama happened. When he broke onto the scene in late '07, it's like everything chilled virtually overnight. After he won Super Tuesday, it was over. Campus got cold and unfriendly. My friends were still my friends, but the professors and a lot of student got very stony. It's like a secret signal went out that it was time to crack down and go hard.

The other extreme of this is politicians being harassed with so many BS lawsuits or charges that it threatens to bankrupt them. Even a single court case can rack up exorbitant legal fees.

I do think it should follow some campaign finance rules though: FEC filings, no foreign donors, etc. if it doesn't already.
