And this is what the commies really want. A significant portion of them get off on the idea of conservatives knuckling under and professing the party line even though they do not believe it. The attitude is the same as Islamic conquerors, rapists and camp guards.

On today's college campuses, students are not maturing -- they're managing. Beneath a facade of progressive slogans and institutional virtue-signaling lies a quiet psychological crisis, driven by the demands of ideological conformity.
++++ How am I supposed to interpret that? Is it that students can't "mature" because the live in a confusing fugue state so they don't get canceled, kicked out, failed or murdered? Or is it that they are just pretending to be "mature" because they are pretending to believe what "mature" people believe - that is, progressive tenets? The manager of a fruit-and-vegetable shop places in his window, among the onions and carrots, the slogan: “Workers of the world, unite! Why does he do it? What is he trying to communicate to the world? Is he genuinely enthusiastic about the idea of unity among the workers of the world? Is his enthusiasm so great that he feels an irrepressible impulse to acquaint the public with his ideals? Has he really given more than a moment’s thought to how such a unification might occur and what it would mean?

I think it can safely be assumed that the overwhelming majority of shopkeepers never think about the slogans they put in their windows, nor do they use them to express their real opinions. That poster was delivered to our greengrocer from the enterprise headquarters along with the onions and carrots. He put them all into the window simply because it has been done that way for years, because everyone does it, and because that is the way it has to be. If he were to refuse, there could be trouble. He could be reproached for not having the proper decoration in his window; someone might even accuse him of disloyalty. He does it because these things must be done if one is to get along in life. It is one of the thousands of details that guarantee him a relatively tranquil life “in harmony with society,” as they say. Posted by: Zombie Vaclav Havel at August 19, 2025 04:52 PM (jmr3z) 40
my experience this is less of a problem for the boys, who pretty clearly do not buy in but will go along for easier whatever, grades, girls etc
but the girl - it really gets to her. she wants to fit in, so badly, and for girls you can really get cancelled/unfriended for saying the wrong thing. guys still don't really care, they will ball-bust, etc. the intensity of the conformity all three of them faced growing up shocked me tho. I thought we'd kind of gotten away from a lot of that in the 80s and 90s. we tried, didn't we? now it's stricter than Puritan New England I swear. it was horrible. social media made it so much worse. Obviously the greengrocer is indifferent to the semantic content of the slogan on exhibit; he does not put the slogan in his window from any personal desire to acquaint the public with the ideal it expresses. This, of course, does not mean that his action has no motive or significance at all, or that the slogan communicates nothing to anyone. The slogan is really a sign, and as such it contains a subliminal but very definite message. Verbally, it might be expressed this way: “I, the greengrocer XY, live here and I know what I must do. I behave in the manner expected of me. I can be depended upon and am beyond reproach. I am obedient and therefore I have the right to be left in peace.” This message, of course, has an addressee: it is directed above, to the greengrocer’s superior, and at the same time it is a shield that protects the greengrocer from potential informers. The slogan’s real meaning, therefore, is rooted firmly in the greengrocer’s existence. It reflects his vital interests. But what are those vital interests?

Oh, crap. I didn't get that memo. I was on an away trip for Tennis in college on one of the days you picked next semester's courses, and got lumped involuntarily into an Urban Studies class. No embellishment, I was the only Caucasian that class.
Prof was a black female with issues. She used do discuss something and then go "And does our white student have any opinion on that?", knowing what she said previously would be hard to agree with. I do recall one such time saying, "You keep calling me white, but I think I'm more of an off beige. And, looking around I don't see anyone with actual black skin, just different shades of brown, of which beige is a very light shade of brown. And, no, I have nothing to add." Got an A in that class somehow. Prof turned out to be kind of funny once you got to know her, and hand some back. Waste of time for educational purposes, but made a few friends that semester. She's so excited and now anxious, b/c she's never had to tell a company she's quitting before - so she's feeling guilty. But I said why feel guilty b/c you told them you weren't happy when the client canceled, but they didn't let you swap clients to a closer client, so you gave them notice, decided you could do better, and now have. Needless to say, dad and I are relieved and feel she's now fully launched - certifications, benefits, no school debt, and a FT job at 22...better than 57% of all college grads this year, I think.

We have seen that the real meaning of the greengrocer’s slogan has nothing to do with what the text of the slogan actually says. Even so, this real meaning is quite clear and generally comprehensible because the code is so familiar: the greengrocer declares his loyalty (and he can do no other if his declaration is to be accepted) in the only way the regime is capable of hearing; that is, by accepting the prescribed ritual, by accepting appearances as reality, by accepting the given rules of the game. In doing so, however, he has himself become a player in the game, thus making it possible for the game to go on, for it to exist in the first place.

Why are faculties so uniformly Marxist? Because idiot conservatives hired a few back in the sixties and seventies, to ass viewpoint diversity, and those young professors became the heads of hiring committees and department chairs, and they hired more Marxists (because, screw viewpoint diversity!). Pretty soon, faculties were and are entirely radical Marxists, except for a few 90 year old relics hanging around because they cannot be forced out, thanks to tenure.
To change, universities must change how they hire. Departments cannot hire their own people. Tenure should end entirely. When I was in HS and college back in the 90s/early 00s, I knew the score - back then it was simple. You could be openly right wing if you were a good student, and willing to work hard for good grades. But you could mouth off about Leftist crap and get an A with very little effort.

Posted by: Skip at August 19, 2025 04:58 PM (+qU29) --- College was about learning to give people what they want. Politics had taken center stage (and gotten stupid), but I had a prof who totally disagreed with my take on the Holy Roman Empire's development during the 1200s and said I came off like a poly sci major, which I was. I caustically asked him if he would prefer a straight chronology of the Imperial succession to a discussion of the larger forces at work and he snapped "Yes." Back then it was blue books, and so before I even looked at the questions, I wrote out the succession of the Empire in the margins, and only then read the questions. He gave me 4.0. The lefties are the ones that came up with "The personal is political" and made it a daily devotion to do what they could, when they could to advance The Cause.
Plain academics were caught unawares because they did not have the same disposition toward politics. They just were looking for bright candidates to fill teaching staff. However, the lefties that got in on their academic merits were pledged not to receive others in the same way. This is your ideology sieve: The more "The personal is political" zealots you get on your staff, the more academics are compromised for ideology. They've not only stacked the decks at universities, but I'm quite sure they've discouraged academically-capable people from bothering with advanced degrees--if not college altogether. And that completes the ideological closure. So that suddenly academics can say "Everyone in academia generally aggreges with me. We're not going to take the opinion of the rabble over our educated brothers and sisters!" Posted by: Axeman at August 19, 2025 05:13 PM (krQz2) 148

We were assigned a story/poem called “Balloon Man”; the takeaway from the assistant professor that this balloon man was a pedophile, something like that. Maybe. But I didn’t like being told what to write. And why can’t a balloon man just like selling balloons? Does he have to be a kiddie fucker? For an English class?
The world wide web was pretty new. I did a little dive on the author, who probably was some degenerate, and had committed suicide. So I mentioned all that in my report. “See me after class” he says. “You’ve been doing your own research, haven’t you!!!!” He was pissed off incandescent. Not in the least. In fact, they insist on it
Have you ever heard a leftist state a political opinion and ever be hesitant about any part of it? Simplistic, yes, but never hesitant. ... But I'm sure since the Obama era you have to do it or pay the price.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 19, 2025 05:02 PM (EmA9 ![]() ++++ It happened in real time. I got out just under the wire. As a non-communist on campus, my experience was that it was okay. There were some profs I needed to avoid, and I dropped one class because the professor told us on day 1 that if you weren't a communist, she'd mark you down. But mostly, I was a curiosity. That weirdo who wasn't a red or a lib. The Obama happened. When he broke onto the scene in late '07, it's like everything chilled virtually overnight. After he won Super Tuesday, it was over. Campus got cold and unfriendly. My friends were still my friends, but the professors and a lot of student got very stony. It's like a secret signal went out that it was time to crack down and go hard. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 19, 2025 05:41 PM (z8vUP) 302
There's an old SF story where a man invents a time machine and fetches William Shakespeare himself to the present and takes him to a college course given by a Shakespeare expert. The professor flunks him out. Posted by: Oldcat That's similar to a Twilight Zone episode. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734630 Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at August 19, 2025 05:41 PM (63Dwl) 303

Have to say, I'm not a big fan of Government officials being able to set up non-profit criminal defense funds. It allows totally anonymous sources to fund the endeavor, and that could be anything from tax payer funds circuitously funneled through other non-profits to foreign govts. to off the books intelligence agency assets. It could even be quid pro quo from industries he assisted with legislation in the past.
I don't like the process. Posted by: Orson at August 19, 2025 05:31 PM (dIske) The other extreme of this is politicians being harassed with so many BS lawsuits or charges that it threatens to bankrupt them. Even a single court case can rack up exorbitant legal fees. I do think it should follow some campaign finance rules though: FEC filings, no foreign donors, etc. if it doesn't already. When mom says "cut off that dick, put on a skirt, and play volleyball" every Red Blooded God Fearing American Man has to do that. Right ? A few of you keep playing the same old game. Naming Authority Figures that told you what you liked to hear. Because no Authority Figure ever tells you different. Right ?
