Unruly Elephants Cafe

babyelephantphoto.jpg

That baby elephant grew up to be a criminal.

Baby elephants don't understand that they are massively heavy and try to be lap-cats.

Fox evades a persistent hawk.

This Golden Eagle caught the fox, and is able to carry it away even in a high wind.

Waterfall in Iceland.
Inside a kangaroo's pouch. I guess I should have known this, but didn't -- a kangaroo's teats are inside the pouch.

Pandas are devoted to disproving the entire concept of Darwinian survival of the fittest.

Horse takes a quick dip in a creek.

Man and his best friend surf.

A father and daughter debate the curfew and proper dress policies.

Florida Man is just different.

This may be a bad sign.

Watched one tiny songbird drive a golden eagle off my roof this morning by repeatedly dive-bombing it. Seen plenty of predator birds driven off by a number of smaller birds working together, or at least by one decent-sized bird, but pretty rare to see one single tiny bird that could fit in the palm of your hand do it. Penguin eggs vary much in size, from a large hen’s egg to a goose’s. They mostly lay two at once. Their nests are sometimes close together, so you can soon pick up a lot. They stand in pairs, each couple at their nest to defend it, and some will not give up till they have been kicked away two or three times. They can give a good sharp bite, if they get hold of you.

Reminds me of the old TV Westerns like Life & Legend of Wyatt Earp, when all the Hoodlums wanted a town to be "Open."

That's what this Free DC is farce -- Democrats hoodlums demanding an "open" city.

AI defines "open town" as: In the context of Westerns, an "open town" signifies a settlement largely characterized by a lack of strict law enforcement and, in many cases, a thriving environment for activities considered illegal or morally questionable in other areas.

From what I understand, especially when you call them in when there's snow around.

Saw a video where a guy let his Husky outside where there was snow on the ground and it was also coming down hard. When he called the dog in, it just stared at him, laying curled all happy in the snow. A neighbor had called the cops on the guy for animal cruelty. When the cops came, he let the cops into the back yard to show them and see if they could get him in. The dog was just curled up against the blowing snow, without a care in the world. In its element, so to speak. The cops just laughed and left.

According to a Supreme Court decision, accepting a pardon is admitting guilt to the offense.

Practically speaking, this can't be true, as the pardon has been used several times to free people who have been exonerated by evidence discovered after a trial, bit I suppose the Court was just grasping at any excuse in that particular instance, as the case in question was a guy waiting to rejected a pardon that the rat bastard Wilson had bestowed upon him for the sole purpose of erasing his 5th Amendment rights against self-incrimination to force him to testify in another person's trial.

There's always hope. Cats often have an inner dial that can change with time or a 'duty station' reserved for him or her. Recently my big fluffy boy cat, William T Sherman decided that he can sleep for a bit on the bed at night and be petted instead of reserving it to the female cat who they had been leaving it for this last decade or so. Another high strung cat I have also had his fear dial turned down with age and became a lap cat more.

The etymology of "nimrod" is rather interesting. Nimrod was a biblical figure known to be a very skilled Hunter. Elmer Fudd showed up in a Bugs Bunny cartoon in hunter's regalia, so Bugs sarcastically referred to him as a great Nimrod. Most people seeing the cartoon did not catch the bublical reference and assumed Bugs was just using a mild general insult, asking to "doofus" or "coozergibbet," but thought it sounded fetch and started using it in daily conversation.

166 That is usually the case. There is the rare instance of the General Absolution, given to those in imminent danger of death (e.g. soldiers). But even here, the absolved must be truly contrite and be resolved to confess at the earliest opportunity.

A joke from the Spanish Civil War:
Q: What is the most dangerous land animal?
A: A Requete who has just come from Confession.

Requetes were Navarrese Catholic Militia who were very enthusiastic about killing Communists. They tended to fight to the last man, and one of their overrun positions in Teruel had "Remember: Every Communist You Kill Is One Day Less in Purgatory" written on the wall.

We need such men today.

Mine had a hideous intellect. It could outsmart my mother, or help her in ways it would never do for us. A few examples. One time me, my father, and my brother went away for a weekend. My mother had to take care of him. He didn't play fetch, he played keep, forget trying to get anything from him. Mom was hanging clothes on the line out one of the back windows, she dropped a clothes pin, the dog jumps onto the porch, picks it up, puts his paws on the window sill and hands her the clothespin through the window. If I dropped it he would turn it to sawdust. Then she had to take him for a walk, she says under her breath "where the hell is your leash". Dog vanishes, and comes back with the leash in his mouth and hands it to her. Never did that for any of us. My mother told us all this when we got home. She said it was like the dog was saying ok, I got to train this woman. lol

They've been there since the time of Christ. Our media uses the term "Arab Christian" to make you think they came in with the Muslims - which is absurd. Or that they are Arabs who converted to Christianity, which is also absurd since it carries a sentence of death.

The Christians in the Middle East retreated into fortified communities and cut deals for protection as needed. They often made common cause with the Druze, who are regarded as heretics.

He would pull a couple out, leave one on the floor as bait so my mother would find it thinking ok, its over. Um..no. He would move a good distance away from the basket, keep one between his paws to play with while laying like the sphinx. If she looked over at him he would put his paws together and cover it so she couldn't see. He was sneaky.

235 How do pandas survive in the wild? Well, they barely do. The ‘wild’ pandas are now highly monitored and protected by the Chinese government. Very few are actually truly wild.

The Chinese recognize the immense popularity of the panda in the west. The Chinese never cared about pandas for hundreds if not thousands of years. It was not until the west saw them that their popularity exploded, and the Chinese said ‘hey, we might have something here.’

The panda is an evolutionary dead end. It’s got a carnivore’s body and nutritious requirements, but it has adapted (barely) to surviving on a herbivore diet. It’s theorized that pandas were out-competed by better carnivores, and had to retreat way up into the mountains where the only reliable source of food was bamboo.

236 Thanks, Ace.

I want a baby elephant. It was one of my first Christmas gifts, as there are photos of her under the tree. Oddly, also an ostrich that was bigger than me.

Instead of a baby elephant we will soon have a baby granddaughter! There is some babysitting in my near future. Possibly a night shift to help the spoiled parents. Soon.

Being big enough that they don't have predators is most of it. Cubs and juveniles get picked off by leopards and such, but the adults are safe.

Wiki: "[...] Baylisascaris schroederi, a parasitic nematode known to infect giant panda intestines. This nematode species is known to give pandas baylisascariasis, a deadly disease that kills more wild pandas than any other cause."
