People often say it makes no difference who the president is. And maybe that was kinda true before. I mean, did it really matter if Tyler was president instead of the other guy? Tippecanoe? Whoever? Clinton being president in 1993 instead of Bush. Did it make a huge difference in Your life? Probably not. But today there is a huge difference. EVERYTHING would be significantly different if Donald Trump was not President. He changed the World. Our lives are certainly different today because of him. "Your call is important to us."
Posted by: Comrade Flounder, Disinformation Demon at August 18, 2025 08:20 PM (i24o9) F'n hell. Called LabCorp today. They sent me the second of two collection notices on a bill I paid two months ago. The first time I called, a month ago, it took about 45 minutes to determine that they paid a bill I HAD ALREADY PAID with the money for this bill. The service person, English-challenged, naturally, said she would move the money onto the correct invoice. So, opened the mail, and here I have the second past due notice, threatening to move it to collections, end their service to us, etc. So, called today. On hold for 10 minutes, then the call itself took over an hour, to determine that they did NOT use the money to pay the current invoice, but they are "in the process" of refunding that money through the mail. IOW, they hadn't done shit. I told them I was NOT going to pay this bill twice, so her solution was to put this one on hold until I get the check in the mail and then I can pay it. What odds do I get for if she does or doesn't take care of it? Posted by: tcn in AK at August 18, 2025 08:28 PM (1Gsou) 119

And in the same vein, we dropped DH's car off at Meineke to get a new exhaust system installed, work on the brakes. Dropped it off Sunday, appointment was for Tuesday, we went camping, came back Friday. They hadn't touched the car, hadn't called, hadn't done shit.
So, after DH read them the riot act, they fixed his brakes early Saturday and we picked up the car. As he was picking it up, they finally got the muffler and pipes from Anchorage. Said he would call them for a SPECIFIC APPOINTMENT AT A SPECIFIC TIME of his convenience. Manager didn't charge him a dime for the brakes, at least. WTF? How do these places stay in business? I worked with an Irishman named Hughie Gallagher who lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The renovation company we worked for did work in Manhattan. The drill the day before Thanksgiving was to work the morning and go home with pay at noon. Also gave us a frozen turkey. Hughie brought his home on the subway and went to the bar with it until 2 or 3 AM. Don't know how many times he dropped the bird. He eventually stumbled home and was standing on the front stoop too drunk to work the lock, so he started banging on the door yelling. His wife wakes up, comes downstairs, opens the door and Hughie is standing there, kinda incoherent and covered with liquid/blood from the turkey. She almost fainted thinking he had been stabbed.

Replaced a 1990 Sub-Zero fridge about 5 years ago.
Tech who came explained that everything was working fine, but that the unavoidable kill factor (insulation absorbing moisture, gradually losing its insulation ability) was the culprit. He said that SubZero will do new runs of old model spare parts when the requests from the field reach a certain number. If I were to run a consumer products company, it would be much like this. Probably lower-cost/lower-end than SubZero, but higher cost than the cheap crap of today - with the guarantee that it's simpler, better made, and will last much longer. Had a 100cc dirt bike when I was kid. Never drove a stick in a car though. A couple years out of high school I had to make a parts run for the boss. He gave me the keys for a crappy little Isuzu pick-up (or whatever it was). Told him never drove a stick before, he told told me clutch is that peddle and the shot pattern...
Took off running it through the gears like it was a 100cc dirt bike. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at August 18, 2025 10:06 PM (/lPRQ) 287
My Jetta has a 5 speed manual. I could leave it running in downtown DC and I am sure no one would take it.
