Growing up in the 50's, early 60's was even more fun. As long as you were home when the street lights came on, the world was your oyster. Being a kid back then was amazing. Before the nanny state decided that kids' activities needed to be made "safer". Wouldn't trade that time for the world. Lots of terrific memories, for sure.

Fast forward a couple more years, and we actually had the luxury of time to go to the local mall in College Station and park our hineys on the floor by the theater to watch "Return of the Jedi" on the first day that it came out. We were 1st in line!
By the time the movie started, the theater was packed. Unfortunately, at the climactic scene where Emperor Palpatine is zapping Luke Skywalker, the sound cut out and didn't come back on for several crucial minutes. The poor theater owner had to take it in the shorts and issue everybody there passes to come see it again another day.
Everyone was disappointed, but understanding. And we got to see it again a few days later, so all was well 😊❤️

Yes, things would have been entirely different today. Fortunately, things turned out as they did in the long run. For all the lost opportunities, grievous mistakes, burnt bridges, and high prices paid, I have a wonderful wife, two great grown kids and a fine son-in-law, more comfort than I could possibly have earned, and the prospect of several more years on the planet. I have to grit my teeth to say it, but I wouldn't change a thing.

I'm old enough to remember the "Freak Tent" at my local state fair. It was, absolutely, hilarious, because I knew most of the "exhibits". It was just a bunch of people I grew up with including my third grade teacher who glued hair on her face to make it look like she had a beard. Another exhibit was the talking decapitated head. They buried a guy up to his shoulders in the ground and for some reason instead of talking to the patrons he would sing show tunes.

That I can understand. Music never paid good enough not to have some kind of backup job, unless you were an arena act. I always use my ears because I don't read music. Tabs are easy, but they drive my eyes crazy, so I just go with the ears. They are usually one and done.

Still in Dallas? No, I lived in East Dallas (next to Mesquite) for a good while but moved to Tennessee when I got a better paying job. Stayed there for ten years and moved back to my home state Alabama. Don't think I'll move anymore. I love it here and plan on staying. My oldest brother still lives in the Dallas area. He will never move, his kids all live close to him.

What does CBD say about bourbon prices and quality? I agree, but I set the bar for perfectly good everyday booze a bit lower than he does. For around $30 I have found very satisfactory stuff. Elijah Craig rye (finished this week) was quite nice with a cube or two - $22? The rum I might finish tonight (Doorly's XO) is about the same price, very nice. It's slightly better cousin comes in under $30 still, I think. Suppose tariffs will boost those a tad.
Not going to help the economy much but will do what I can on the booze consumption trend.

Generally I just drink it as hard cider on the rare times that I want something lik it. I do let it sour into vinegar, though.
I quit drinking a while ago, because I figured out I wasn't any good at it.

On Sept. 1 here in South Carlackey, the Hands-Free and Distracted Driving Act goes into effect. No cell phone "holding" while driving. From what I'm reading, they are going to go on a strict enforcement campaign.
For the first 180 days, only warning will be given. After that, it's fines and points.
Any use of texts, email, or written communication while driving is banned, as well as watching video. Only hands free voice calls will be allowed, and you can't be touching the device at all.

When my boys attended the same parochial school, I was able to pull them both out on a whim and we all went snow skiing together. They were thrilled to play hookey for a day and go do something fun with mom.

And second, my mom was a 4th grade teacher in the late 60s and early 70s. Told her students to go out in the summer rainstorms in barefeet and squish their toes into the mud. It made such an impact on some of them that they still send her Christmas cards…she’s106.

Giles, that was a nice story about your Mom. I went to the wake for my third grade teacher a few years back. She was in her late nineties, but she was one of my favorite teachers ever and she inspired in me a love of reading that I have to this day.

I have been a subscriber to @Southern_Living since I left for college. My grandmother gave each of us the cookbooks every Christmas, lovingly inscribed. I inherited her collection years ago, too. There's another kinda sorta planetary parade forming on the early morning side of the sky now in late August. Venus, Jupiter, Saturn will be all visible. Then Mercury will pop up briefly as well, but that will hard to see, low and close to sunrise.

Uranus and Neptune will be up there as well, so technically 6 planets "parading" in the morning, but you can't see Uranus and Neptune. The Moon will be in there as well.
I believe this morning and the morning of the 19th will be the best window.
