I think the NFL is about to learn a Bud Light lesson. In our house, watching football was a family activity. Adults, kids everybody having a good time watching the Cowboys play. Very family friendly. But, now if i had young kiddos. Do I want them exposed to a bunch of trannies prancing around? No, I do not. I don't mind explaining the rules of football to the little niblets. I have no desire explaining the mental illness of sexually confused lunatics. I would simply not watch. I suspect a lot of parents are going to feel the same way. But, we'll see. Yeah, read that as they did with Joann's Fabrics, they buy the business, sell of all of the real estate upon which the stores/restaurants reside then pay the new owners to lease that land, which puts them in a profit loss, so they can then go bankrupt and sell off the remaining assets.

the destruction being wrought by private equity and corporate executives whose version of "capitalism" is the short-term extraction of existing wealth at the expense of long-term wealth creation.
One of the major drivers of this is "too low interest rates" Low rates, especially low rates plus the discount major borrowers get (unlike proles who run businesses, pay payrolls, and buy houses and cars can get) make it profitable to borrow big, buy out companies, and then mine them for all the profit until the company is a husk, and then it is still profitable to sell off the wrecked business piece-meal. A few years ago I attended a friends wedding in St Pete, FL. A bunch of us went to a local beach bar the night before the ceremony, very casual place.
There was a group from the panhandle area at the bar. I know because 1) they made a point of telling everyone and 2) they looked the part. One woman got out on the dance floor with a hula hoop for some unknown reason. One of her companions, a guy with hair halfway down his back, a dirty wife beater and a pair of knee length camo shorts took the hula hoop and had a go. A few gyrations and his shorts were down around his ankles. He was rocking a commando look. Did this stop Florida Man? It did not. Some things you see cannot be unseen. Think they take a business and then make it fail, such as by selling off the property and then having to pay to lease the property. They buy it with no intention of running it. There was also the GameStop thing a few years back, where big stock investors invested in GameStop failing (whatever that's called), so then it needed to fail. Posted by: Buck Throckmorton The MBAs of this generation turn companies into wasteland as they extricate every nickel of value for themselves but little enough for the shareholder unwary enough to trust management. Look up the tawdry record of Cerebrus in destroying Remington, DPMS, etc. while gobbling up public subsidies and ignoring quality plus safety in the case of Remington. Financialized economies produce nothing but debt and bankruptcy as they destroy the very value of a company as a going concern--quality goes to crap, etc as Buck describes above. Posted by: toby928 at August 18, 2025 11:08 AM (jc0TO) Like buying a beater car so you can get the money for parts? Yes, but if private equity buys up a business that is floundering, puts all the debt of buying it on the company itself, and then treats it like a milk cow and forces it to make up its own losses from no re-investment, when it fails from iliquidity, then it seems somehow unfair to the employees and customers. It is like the quaint Canadian custom of allowing the coroner to declare a patient "near enough death" so the hospital can go ahead with organ harvesting. It is legal under Canadian law, yes. Posted by: Jukin the Deplorable As someone with actual business experience plus the education, that is NOT what is going on here. Has little to do with Schumpeter's creative destruction. In the financialization case, the idea is that you can a) have too much quality--so you cheapen the source of parts for something like an auto to make it disposable. That is the EV way--not reusable nor particularly resellable but designed to extricate wealth from the unwary customer in order to plant the wealth in to the executive and/or hedge fund owner. You fire the most expensive employees as quality is job last. Essentially you use the company as a piggy bank to raid leaving a shell behind. That is why a lot of Merger and Acquisitions has nothing to do with synergies or some other bullshit--it is a) to turn the market into a stable oligopoly preventing future competition to milk customers or b) to turn everything into a financial net present value equation to maximize short term earnings--not long term viability. a lot of it is the conflation of profit with gain.
Gain is just gain - more money now than you had before. Profit is an actual measure of your usefulness as an entity to someone else ("the customer"). All profit is gain. Not all gain is profit. If very little of your gains are actually profits, then your entity is eventually going away. Posted by: Warai-otoko at August 18, 2025 11:29 AM (VoAdT) 87

And the whales doing it were hedge fund investing firms. A lot of these trades are not profitable unless you can do it with such a large sum of money as to overwhelm rational investors looking at P/E values etc. Same way that Robin Hood trading is used to forerun a particular hedge fund's operations in buying stock--they look at what the free/cheap traders are putting in buy and sell orders for in order to do their own trades before those trades are executed so as to make a steady tidy profit. TO benefit from that effect, you have to start with gobs of money otherwise relying on market imperfections doesn't generate enough return v risk for the run of the mill individual investor. In the (ongoing, AFAIK) GameStop saga, the 'kids' noticed the huge short interest in GameStop, and started buying the stock, causing the stock price to rise. This caused a "margin squeeze" on the investors who had shorted the stock, meaning they owed more and more as the stock went up. They have to buy the stock to 'cover' their position at some point. Shorting a stock in not risk-free.

Milton Friedman considered the only fiduciary obligation was to maximize profits, but I am unable to figure out if he meant that "for as long a period as possible" or just "most money as fast as possible"
Once again the issue is a debt based economy where the easiest way to get access to lots of money is to borrow it, and the best way to keep access is to keep paying the interest payments. It cause a layer of "rentier" class to develop, the middlemen who get rich doing nothing but allowing other people to work and charging a percentage on it. The greater the debt, the greater the payments and the greater the percentages earn. All losses are borne by the bottom rung when things go bust Part of it is made easier by bankruptcy laws isolating corporations from their investors, but I would consider making that separation of entities easier to breach in cases of intentional bad behavior, like stripping and running. 116 Milton Friedman considered the only fiduciary obligation was to maximize profits, but I am unable to figure out if he meant that "for as long a period as possible" or just "most money as fast as possible"
Posted by Kindltot. ------- I was never as big of a fan of Friedman as others are here as I read his formal writings when I was an Business Econ major studying the Evolution of Economic Thought and other classes. For the most part, he was a Keynesian, not Austrian school, and I suspect he would agree with Keynes that in the long run, we are all dead--so live for today. His major break with Keynes was more that money obeys supply and demand laws just like any other good. In the 70's, that was revolutionary as Nixon spoke for the nation's elites when he said "We are all Keynesians" now. Friedman provide a check to the idea that we could simply run endless deficits and print money with no ill effects. Posted by: whig at August 18, 2025 11:46 AM (ctrM5) 144

According to a high-level source inside the Trump administration, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is now reviewing a secret dossier on the December 6, 2024 coup d’état in Romania—one that points directly to former Biden regime officials.
The file reportedly names three top Biden operatives: disgraced Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, his assistant James O’Brien, and U.S. Ambassador to Bucharest Kathleen Kavalec. Their fingerprints, according to the source, are all over Romania’s election annulment. Posted by: SMOD at August 18, 2025 11:50 AM (RHGPo) 155

A simplistic view but In the insurance industry they saw the Claims department as a liability that spent money thus they look to reduce its operating expense while they see the sales department as producing income thus they have no problem throwing money into its operating cost.
They never considered situations where the claims department had authorization to settle a claim up to 500k and they ended up settling for it for 400k only because of the expertise of the claims handler. They always just figured the pre settlement evaluation was too high. Damn I hated the insurance claims business. Posted by: polynikes at August 18, 2025 11:51 AM (EYmYM) 159

Keynes just formalized the actions the Bank of England took to deny that they were in default in the wake of WWI. The whole system, including the US, went to that cover up, the US unfortunately was convinced that it was necessary because the UK was a major trading partner, and the US was looking at a post war slump.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic --- No guarantees. Microsoft is subject to the problem that all large mature companies have--investing in their own product lines generates less and less growth in profits so they look afield to eliminate competitors, suck as much money out of their remaining customers (Windows is now for the first time suffering from a decline in licenses worldwide), and monetizing their customer's data for selling via AI and the cloud. Enshittification. Same as the airlines have done to air travel. So you get Microsoft hiring Chinese software engineers in China to run DoD Azure cloud services. Microsoft thought it was okay to hire Americans with security clearances but no special software engineering skills to simply walk around these data centers and watch what the Chicoms were doing on their screens. My last build was about five years ago, with Mint and Win 7 on a VM. It was only when my firm went with MS Cloud PC from traditional VPN access to a VM that I had to "upgrade" Win 11. Mint runs Win 11 fine in a VM. Gone are the days of needing to dual boot if you need Windows, except if you are gaming.

I'm not certain it's, precisely, the US IC at all. I'm coming to the conclusion that some portion of the IC, possibly only from western countries, has gone extra-national. I suspect that they use money from drug/human smuggling to fund their efforts without relying on taxpayers - not that they won't take that also, if offered. All so they can massage the world into their vision of utopia.
