As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? "The Earth Dies Screaming" is actually a pretty decent B-movie. The title is overly lurid for the kind of film it is, but it's directed by Terrence Fisher who knew how to shoot a movie.

What did you do this past week fundamentals-wise? Anything? Anything at all?
Why, yes, Mr. Weasel. I did. I found and fixed a flaw in my shooting/spotting at the same time. The problem was that my light 6.5 rifle would buck enough that I couldn’t get back on target to see the splash. By drawing the stock in tighter (and shooting at the lowest exhale), I could stay on target. Resulting in a very good long range day. I don’t have this problem with the heavier .308. So, range report: before we sailed edition. We were pretty much packed and I headed to the range the 2 days before we sailed. My wife looks at me and says, "I thought there weren't any matches before we sailed?" I replied, "No, but there is one the day after we get back and I won't have time to check things before the match.
The lovely Mrs. Blake rolled her eyes and told me I was going to go through withdrawal while we were gone. I told I'd be fine. Anyway, took both rifles out to check dope. 8 for 9 with both, 200 to 500 meters. I still find it bizarre I see no problem hitting a 4" target @ 500 meters. ....anyone got a 45? It's been too damned hot and humid to go to the range. C'mon October!
For the reloaders, I've seen a lot of sales on powder and primers lately from the usual suspects: MidwayUSA, Midsouth, and Natchez. Not just sales but sometimes reduced or no shipping or hazmat fees. Midsouth has a sale on all Starline brass at the moment. Considering the drought in ammo supplies the last few years, this might be a time to start building up some components. Even percussion caps have been around. Oddly, the supply of good English black flints for flintlocks has not been too reliable for a while. Posted by: JTB at August 17, 2025 07:27 PM (yTvNw) 46

“My standard has always been being able to put the second shot on top of the first shot. That is when you have your shit dialed in.”
I’m pleased to report that, not only was my shit not wobbly, but it was dialed in. Three steel targets in the same area off to the left at around 865. I didn’t realize that I had hit all three in the same spot until I sent my drone down to take a look. About 3” from center at 1 o’clock on freshly panted steel. Sniper shot.
13,000 feet = 4333 yards. Assume the sniper has a rifle that will shoot 1 minute of angle groups (1" group at 100 yards) 4333 yards /100 yards = 43 inches. In other words, that bullet could hit anywhere inside a circle 43 inches across. Last time I checked, they aren't making 4 foot wide Russians. I say it could happen, but there would be a lot of luck involved. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 17, 2025 07:30 PM (/3eFd) 53

Its the 90th anniversary of the .357? I'll have to wish my Colt .357 Revolver a happy anniversary then. No shooting since I've been back from my vacation. Not sure when I get out. The Babylon DC region tends to suck the motivation to do anything, but I'll get out to the range at some point. Sharpshooters in Lorton is the easiest one to get to. Not a fan of indoor ranges though and that one feels more compact than normal.

In the otherwise excellent The Jackal's Mistress, set in northern VA in 1864, author Chris Bohjalian depicts the murder of pair of highwayman by a woman, done with a black powder Colt 45 revolver, after which she is careful to find and "retrieve the spent cartridges."
Wassup with that? These were percussion cap guns, with a very limited usage of paper cartridges, and majority usage being powder charged into cylinders, balls cranked in on top using the gun's integral levered plunger. I have a Pietta replica. Is this just poor research by the novelist, or am I missing something? Posted by: M. Gaga at August 17, 2025 07:47 PM (dDfHb) 93

How long can a cigar keep its flavor if not stored correctly? There is a Churchill Cigar Lounge on board and I'm tempted to grab a couple for TX. But, I don't want to ruin a premier cigar by doing dumb stuff.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at August 17, 2025 07:44 PM (0sNs1) ----- Maybe this will suffice: Fun Size Joe has been trying to catch a squirrel in our backyard since we've had him. He tries really hard, but usually doesn't get very close and the squirrels chatter away in the trees. Well yesterday, a big fat squirrel fell out of the trees and practically landed on top of FSJ with a thump. The squirrel was stunned for a couple of seconds and Joe was startled for about the same length of time. The squirrel and Joe both came to their senses at about the same time and there was a great flurry of jumping and twisting and barking and squeaking. Joe didn't catch the squirrel, but he's never come closer! Posted by: Weasel at August 17, 2025 07:52 PM (3nqLb) 105

Blake, hard to say. If stored properly, as I would expect, there should be no problem. You can kinda sorta test for dried out by touch (too hard, any cracking sounds) but that’s very crude and unreliable as sticks have varying “feel” when normal.

* sigh * I don't expect historical accuracy in every detail but stuff like that takes me right out of my suspension of disbelief. My wife was reading some fantasy novel where the full moon is supposed to be super significant for whatever reason and the author describes it rising at all different hours of the night. If it matters enough to the story to make a point of it, get the simple stuff right. Posted by: Oddbob at August 17, 2025 07:57 PM (3nLb4) 112

I know of at least one person who “ages” his cigars the way some people put down wine. I’ve had one or two from him that were years old and very tasty. Who has that patience? YellowBird, and as with wine, only certain cigars improve much with time. Generally they are shipped ready to be burned. The tobaccos involved in some cases have been aged many years prior to rolling. Three years aging prior to rolling is a common minimum for most premium cigars.

Weasel OK here’s the Perdomo story. Stopped over in Miami a few days en route to a sailing trip in the Caribbean. Went to Perdomo HQ in Miami Gardens. Got there close to closing time. Managed to burn a 10th Anniversary maduro in their lounge - which featured a life-size cardboard stand-up photo of The Donald (election was days away).
Their humidor had, naturally, their entire line, wanted to buy one of everything! So waiting for my Uber, they’re locking up, Nick Perdomo III stayed there to lock the gate after I was picked up. We chatted about the cigar industry, then the election. We both expressed concern that the outcome had to be a certain one, or whoa. Anyway very nice guy and was fun to talk with him while he graciously hung out til my ride showed. Posted by: rhomboid at August 17, 2025 08:12 PM (IDQSL) 126

Well the shooting of the Anaconda was short lived. We blame the ammo. Seemed to swell the casings after firing and that would push the shell out just a bit and keep the cylinder from turning.
So we settled in to shooting 9mm semiautomatics. Posted by: blaster at August 17, 2025 08:13 PM (RoO7G) 128

What a shock that the comments are turned off at YouTube for that movie. I'm 9.5 minutes into it and it's so bad it's bad. Woman who was in an oxygen tent in the hospital wakes up and finds everyone dead. She and her brother make their way to a quaint inn out in the country and she's somehow coiffed, dressed, and made up. She stares down her nose at a random survivor she and her brother encounter in the inn and enquires smoothly, "May I have a drink, please?" One has never been fired, but it just got a new vortex scope and is bore sighted. The other hasn't been fired in 30 years, but the last time it was fired regularly it could do 5 shot groups dead center in the space of a quarter at 100 yards . Its been so long I really want to see if it's where it used to be, and the other needs to be tested and have the scope zeroed etc. Then test them at longer ranges.

I could have done tinyurl.com but the gist was a 13,000 foot shot. Yeah did he hot the one aiming at?
"Once is happenstance... etc.". Also, until independently confirmed or refuted I assume anything and everything said about Ukraine is BS propaganda. Posted by: Oddbob at August 17, 2025 07:51 PM (3nLb4) Saw another video about that. The shooter (or shooters, since it was a team of two on that 14.5mm rifle) had help from a spotter drone, someone in the rear running calculations and corrections on a ballistic computer, and a lot of shots (at least seven or eight in the vid I saw) before they got a hit. It was more like forward observers walking in artillery rounds to the target. I'm not certain that the targets even knew that they were under long range sniper fire, because it didn't appear to me that they took any evasive action or attempt to change their position in the building targeted. Pre-WWII, gunners on the M1917A1 and Vickers water cooled machineguns were taught to use indirect fire to walk rounds onto their targets. The Ukrainians appear to have refined this w/ spotter drones and ballistic computers in 2025. So, for that 4,000 meter Ukrainian sniper shot, I don't think it meets Weasel's definition of long range shooting. This was definitely a team effort; the shooter(s) didn't have to do everything in their own heads like that Brit in Afghanistan who got a hit on a bad guy at 2,750 meters (or something like that). That guy and his spotter did it all themselves.

At dinner tonight we were discussing foreign gun manufacturers setting up shop in the US for various reasons, not the least of which now would be tariffs.
But put me in mind of a TFBTV video at Beretta in Italy. Oldest firearms manufacturer in the world. From like the 1500s. Wow. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at August 17, 2025 09:17 PM (RoO7G) 191
Going from memory. The S and W model 1 cartridge was made from copper not brass. A rimfire equivalent to a 22 short. I believe the main market was for urban civilians and I've read they were popular even though they were not powerful.
The Colt Richards conversion from the early 1870s, using parts from their cap and ball revolvers and new cylinders with a loading gate looks more like the popular concept of a single action revolver. It was a step closer to the Colt Peacemaker style that came along soon after. I've always thought the development of the brass centerfire cartridge, with the replaceable primer, was as important as the bored through cylinder platform. It allowed for more powerful cartridges and made reloading easier. Posted by: JTB at August 17, 2025 09:18 PM (yTvNw) 192

Saw a video of some company - and I say that lightly because it really seems like a a software nerd who likes guns - with autonomous anti-drone machine guns. And they roll up a prius or something, open the hatch, and start shooting drones out of the sky.

Hey Nurse! Busy. Have all planes out and crews working busily. The Grand Canyon fire and loss of the Lodge and Cabins was a real kick in the pants but the Park Service wouldnt allow the use of Fire Retardant to "protect the natural Beauty of the Park" I guess Burning down the Historic lodge and 70 cabins protected the Natural Beauty and made it look like the surface of the moon.

JTB mentioned up top that reloading components seem to be enjoying some sales and decent prices - and obviously availability - these days. Gonna go do my quick ammoseek.com check for my "reference" component prices (hey - it's probably more useful than BLS's employment numbers).
But his advice stands regardless: for those of you out there who are reloaders, unless you did so in the past, highly recommended you pay attention, snipe at sales and deals, and build those inventories. Despite America's New Golden Era, down-side risk remains (i.e., half the population hasn't been removed or barred from voting). I piled stuff high twice, after the Obamanation initially, and after the fever dies down after Newtown. Still using the components I bought back then. Good basis price, but also, I've got the stuff. Situational awareness in this case consists of taking a 10- or 20-yr view, and stockpiling so you can not participate in "panics". Posted by: rhomboid at August 17, 2025 09:36 PM (U/Byj) 205

Posted by: Diogenes at August 17, 2025 09:31 PM (2WIwB) Well, I had a cousin that lived in PA, so I used to go out there. I wanted to bring these 2 really as an experiment. I never used a vortex scope, and really want to see how good or bad it is. My older 700 probably could use a better scope, but I want to see if its worth getting another vortex or something better depending on the one I just got works out.. What I did have a lot of time on was a slightly older Kahles, but that was a while back, but I knew it good. The turret knobs were calibrated for the 308. I still got it, but it's on a mount specific for something else. Since I haven't shot in 30 years I have to get acquainted with this newer shit. OK, Rhomboid's Bureau of Reloading Component Statistics reports the following:
small pistol primers - 3 cents/per (Brand X), cheapest legacy major brand (Winchester) 4.5 cents/per; not bad, considering the hyper-inflation that has doubled so many things, and affected of course the ingredients for these products large rifle primers - 5.6 cents/per for CCI pistol powder HP38 - $39/lb (ouch); this could be close to double what I last paid rifle powder Varget - $54/lb (haven't used, don't know what it used to cost) All prices do not include shipping or hazmat fees, online purchases. It's extremely important that you NEVER fart in the ocean. It attracts both jellyfish and sharks. Jellyfish move faster so they will attack and leave you temporarily paralyzed and unable to escape when the sharks arrive. Again, NEVER fart in the ocean

Anybody used the "Servicios Aventuras" small pistol primers? That's a brand that appeared I believe during the recent panic (each panic seems to draw in a new non-US brand, which of course is our friend supply and demand working, virtuously).

Cigar of the Day -
Torano Exodus 1959 '50 Years' Box-pressed robusto 5.5 x 55. Excellent construction. Sharp burn line. Being box-pressed it had a good draw. Brazilian wrapper so medium-full flavor. Cigars, like wine, quality and flavor vary with vintage. This one had the new band so surely different than the first ones I have tried. Not quite as distinctive as the older ones I have tried, but not disappointed. Torano is a good brand and all their lines are worth a try. Itinerant, thanks for that review! It's great to horde-source as we get a lot more different sticks in the mix.
I had one Torano a few years back as part of a sampler, but don't have notes on it. Will check into the one you described here. I'm a big fan of Brazilian leaf, arapiraca or mata fina.
