Pax Americana has been so thoroughly discredited that I am amazed that there are presumably sentient humans who still believe that we can be the world's policeman without any downsides.

We carried NATO for its entire existence, and gave the Euro-trash a perfect excuse to spend their money on welfare rather than defense. So the taxpayers of America paid for those cool fast trains and 32 hour work weeks and month-long vacations and cradle-to-grave benefits that have been one of the main drivers of Western European senescence, and the current sclerotic and pathetic societies that focus not on their culture, but on insane woke policies and appeasement of their soon-to-be conquerors...Islam.

We tried to create some sort of weird Jeffersonian democracy in Iraq...and that failed. Afghanistan was a fiasco. Our billions of dollars that are funneled into every failed state in the world is mostly looted, and our soldiers are restricted by insane rules of engagement that get them killed!

And that's just recently. Do you want to talk about Korea and Vietnam and Somalia and Lebanon and....

US Envoy Says Putin Agreed to Security Protections for Ukraine as Part Trump Summit

Special U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday that Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed at his summit with President Donald Trump to allow the U.S. and European allies to offer Ukraine a security guarantee resembling NATO’s collective defense mandate as part of an eventual deal to end the 3 1/2-year war.
“We were able to win the following concession: That the United States could offer Article 5-like protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO," he said on CNN's “State of the Union.” He added that it "was the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree to that.”

If "security guarantee" means selling American arms to Europe and Ukraine, then I'm all for it. But if it means some sort of informal membership in NATO for Ukraine, which is EXACTLY what "Article 5-like protection" means, then no. No. NO!

Let Europe protect Ukraine. Let them risk their soldiers. Let them risk their cities. Let them risk a charming little tactical nuke exchange with Russia. But keep America out of it. We have done enough for the security of Europe, and it is time for them to put their big-boy pants on and defend themselves, and whatever shared culture they have left (aside from Pakistani rape gangs).

Speaking during a brief media availability alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that both Europe and the United States would be involved in securing a post-war peace for Ukraine, but he refused to say outright that American troops would not be put on the ground to maintain that peace.

No American boots on the ground. Let some hapless Belgian battalion be the tripwire for another European war. Or even better, make it some pathetic United Nations blue-helmeted rapist battalion, so they get their balls shot off by the Russians if and when they decide to take a bigger chunk of Ukraine.

I can tell you exactly what this "security guarantee" is worth: that white roll of paper usually found perched next to toilet bowls. Why do you think the Russians would agree to it? Because they know it's as phony as Dylan Mulvaney's coochie.

NATO is dead. Everyone knows it. Russia could invade half the NATO countries and the rest of them would do ... nothing. The USA is gonna go to war with Russia (or China) over Albania? Estonia? Montenegro? Latvia? Greece? Fucking Turkey? Turkey is likely to invade Greece more than be invaded itself.

Non-Intervention is not the same as “Isolationist”; a word coined specifically for strawman arguments. It is true that America wanted nothing to do with another European civil war in the 1930s. And who can blame them? America was founded, in part, specifically to get away from those clowns.

The people who always talk publicly about “American Values” don’t seem to like any of the enumerated rights in our constitution. They talk in vague, anodyne terms about “freedom” and “democracy” but always come down on the side of authoritarian ass-hats. Censorship and criticism of government especially, ist Verboten.

For weeks now, a bunch of motley radicals have been besieging the Portland ICE office late into the night, using amplified sound to harass the Federal cops guarding the building.

There are apartment buildings nearby, and an enraged resident sued the city over its failure to enforce noise codes.

The city had senior police officers testify that enforcing the noise codes is optional, and a judge ruled in favor of the city.

Last night, a stolen car was driven next to the ICE building, was stopped, and the driver fled.

The car was searched, and nothing was found, but that sure looks like a dry run for a car bombing.

You could look at it that way, but he is an actor like any other. He has to save face because that is part of him maintaining power. If he gets territory AND no 'NATO' on his border, then peace is all to his benefit and he can portray him as getting everything he wanted.

Yep.

As long as "we" aren't willing to kill everyone opposing us, including civilians and destroy everything around them,

we have no business going to war.

that doesn't mean civvies should be the first targets, but to get to peace...well, sometimes that needs to happen to clarify the situation for everyone involved.

And no, none, nada rebuilding of their now fucked up country, unless there's a real, tangible benefit for us. If they go to war against us, they need to accept the consequences of that action.

Perhaps, they could pay us for our costs though, with mineral rights or oil. Some such thing. I have to think about that as I'm in favorite of blow shit up-they surrender-we go home.

We have way too many of Our Bettrers in power who think we have to hamstring ourselves so that a bunch of goat herders have a "fair chance" against up. Nope! Explode them to pink paste and call it a day.

The NATO talk was just a pretense. Russia's actions have been to expand their footprint whenever possible to achieve a desired security parameter. A couple of things have happened. One, he realizes, as well as we do, that his armed forces are no longer elite. As much as drone technology has changed the US tank planning, it also impacts mass artillery formations, which is Russia's favorite mode of fighting. He realizes that it is most likely that the democrats will not sit in the WH for the next 10 years, meaning any additional advancement might be an issue.
He saw what we did to Iran's nuke program. So he will concede NATO if he can get a bit more land in the settlement.

I tend to agree, because once Ukraine was invaded Poland went to work upgrading their defense posture. They gave up old cruddy Warsaw Pact weapons to Ukraine, and got nice new shiny US ones. With what we have seen from Russia, I think Poland would beat them in a straight up fight.

None of this precludes the reality that if Russia thought she could take them - say after in some alternate reality they took over Ukraine - Russia would try. But Poland is not a hardened target. Heck, Poland could probably take Germany right now.

Don't believe those average temps. Florence gets very hot and humid in the summer -- beyond NYC. Plus, my point was mostly that I wouldn't survive a trip to Italy in the summer. That's voluntary. I live in NYC so I have to be here in the summer. But I almost never travel anywhere in the summer. Just too hot.

I had wanted to go for Christmas later this year, but some miscommunication led my wife to thinking I wanted it done during the summer. (My mother's schedule was part of that, she definitely could make it in August, but it was a question about December.)

Glad I did it, but it would have probably been even better with Christmas stuff and weather conditions.

This class is botany related. It had nothing to do with gender studies or literature. Only one or two of his other teachers in community college asked this (and he didn't complain them) but they were not science related.

If there was ever a time for the Russians to roll into Western Europe when they were at the peak of military strength, it would have been during the Jimmy Carter term.

I never imagined our military being so weak that we couldn't even start the engines on tanks and other armor because there was so little money allocated for fuel. And that was just a small part of the shortages we experienced in Europe at the time.

So if Russia didn't attack then, I guess they really didn't want to in the first place.

Because that's sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment, and power harassment (I don't even know if that's a thing in the US but whatever) and is therefore strictly forbidden by law.
