13 Intriguing. It looks less like Brooklyn than it does a town in New Mexico, or the town Eastwood rides into in Pale Rider. That utterly clear blue sky and those storefronts scream "The West!"

That's before I even get into the three nuns under glass.

19 Guglielmi: "Osvaldo Louis Guglielmi (April 9, 1906 – September 3, 1956) was an American painter. He was well known in New York, but soon forgotten after his death, as abstract expressionism came to overshadow artists like him. There are elements of precisionism, surrealism, geometric abstraction, regionalism, and social realism in his work. His paintings often commented on poverty and other social and political themes; bleakness and death appear regularly in his pre-war works."

Check.

Posted by: Don Black at August 22, 2025 09:38 AM (AOsQT)

41 The car in the painting suggests 1940s, and the painting is from 1941.

The three nuns in the bell jar . . . that's where the terror comes from, I guess. There's nobody else on the street to display any terror.

"Here, in a realistic style, he portrays three women in nuns’ habits huddling inside a bell jar; they gaze up at a configuration of pelvic bones suspended on the side of a building on a desolate street. First exhibited in a group show at the Downtown Gallery the year that it was painted, the canvas was then-titled Pelvic Beatitudes, Brooklyn, calling attention to the nuns’ cowering reaction to the pelvis bones, which resemble a crucifix or holy relics."

I have to admit I didn't notice the pelvic bones.

102 From the Whitney Museum -

Terror in Brooklyn, Louis Guglielmi’s best-known work, is a highly enigmatic and personal response to social conditions. Guglielmi was associated with a group of American artists who used the language of European Surrealism to evoke the social and political climate of the Great Depression and the war years that followed. Here, in a realistic style, he portrays three women in nuns’ habits huddling inside a bell jar; they gaze up at a configuration of pelvic bones suspended on the side of a building on a desolate street. First exhibited in a group show at the Downtown Gallery the year that it was painted, the canvas was then-titled Pelvic Beatitudes, Brooklyn, calling attention to the nuns’ cowering reaction to the pelvis bones, which resemble a crucifix or holy relics. Asked to explain the composition, Guglielmi said that it contained “associative ideas and images determined by mood caused of irrational events in the objective world—murder in the streets, war—subjective reality.” Instead of explicitly depicting the war into which he would soon be conscripted, Guglielmi envisioned a mysterious scene that invoked the period’s anxious, ominous atmosphere.

110 All seriousness aside, this resonates with me precisely because it is so weird. The pelvic bones? Didn't notice them at first. The lamp-less lamp post? Didn't see it. All my attention was on the three terrified nuns at first.

The little white-picket-fence house just this side of the real estate office reminds me of the home of the town doctor in all the old Westerns like Have Gun -- Will Travel.

115 102 [Louis] Guglielmi ... portrays three women in nuns’ habits huddling inside a bell jar; they gaze up at a configuration of pelvic bones suspended on the side of a building on a desolate street.

123 Guglielmi: "Osvaldo Louis Guglielmi (April 9, 1906 – September 3, 1956) was an American painter.

Posted by: Bulg at August 22, 2025 09:27 AM (77rzZ)

Currently, test-tube babies require an actual woman to decide that she wants to carry a baby to term. Artificial wombs would remove that requirement.

Governments could seize leftover embryos and incubate them. They could harvest eggs from women who're incapacitated, or imprisoned, to fertilize and incubate. Children with no family, raised in a creche, with no family ties to anyone.

And then they could rule that these are not people, it'd be simple to do... the public would fall in line pretty quickly. After all, they're not MY family, they wouldn't even exist if the government hadn't made them.

There're about 20-30 thousand science fiction stories which examine the various ways this is likely to go badly.

326 Slightly expanded from Whitney Museum info. posted in 102, above, Posted by: redridinghood

Louis Guglielmi, 1906–1956
Louis Guglielmi described Terror in Brooklyn, one of his best-known canvases, as “a premonition of war and tragedy.” The painting reflects the artist’s highly personal response to World War II and its impact on the American psyche. Guglielmi, who was born in Egypt to Italian parents and immigrated to the United States as a child, was one of a group of American painters who became known as the Social Surrealists. Along with artists such as Peter Blume and Walter Quirt, Guglielmi utilized the imagery and techniques of European Surrealism to address social and political themes during the 1930s and 1940s.
---
Reportedly, Lou served with the Army Corps of Engineers for two years & didn't paint during that time. Odd, but maybe not so -

National Constitution Center (www.constitutioncenter dot org) The U.S. Army Program, A History
---
Anyway, imho the artist seems to be lacking originality and mimicking the art of others. Don't care of this particular piece and wouldn't hang but an interesting lesson & decent opening to the weekend.

Thanks

=======

The problem with looking at state polls, especially this far out, is that they don't include the effects of the primary calendar.

When a candidate wins SC, other candidates drop out, it affects things.

State polls this far out aren't that interesting. Decisions aren't made because of OH primary polls. They're made on national polling, if anything.

My point is that Kamala is obviously one of, if not the, frontrunner based on national polling that includes her. And frontrunners almost always run. She didn't turn down the CA governor's race because she's not going to run for president.

You're right.

It is all name recognition.

And it will last until the primary. Kamala has more name recognition than anyone else in the Democrat party who will possibly run. It's what helped Biden coast along to victory despite a long history of embarrassing failure and gaffes.

So much of presidential primary politics is name recognition.
