51 Not a fan. Pedestrian composition. Feels a little like an artistic nesting doll, with the view through doors from room to room. The palette is soothing, which is appropriate I suppose, given the subject.

Kind of a big yawn of a painting.

52 The steadily narrowing doors draw the focus to her (also because of the deep red she is wearing) and also to the bedroom. Lots of vertical lines in this, the outer doors, the doorframes, the uprights of the bed frame, and the striped bedroom wallpaper.

Also we have the horizontal lines of the steps up. There is also the diamond shapes of the pattern of the rug closest to us, and the rectangle (slightly out of true) of the rug the woman in standing on. Fascinating.

103 An interesting painting but not one I would hang. It could easily be a book illustration. The perspective of room to room to room catches the eye. It is very feminine, not just from the model but with the delicate furniture, the casually strewn clothing and bed clothes, and the sense of a private area that is hers, not for visitors.

The use of blocks of color in the doors and walls gives a 'modern' feel to the piece rather than the detail that might have been prevalent in earlier times. I can see how this approach could have led to the style of Edward Hopper and others a generation or two later.

129 Ackshewallee, the whole hymn might act as an Anthem of Renewal for Old Blighty:

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Posted by: dantesed at August 19, 2025 10:13 AM (Oy/m2)

__________

My job as a steward is to handle all the little things so that the judge can get through his assignment as efficiently as possible. So, I hand out armbands to the exhibitors, call dogs into the ring, lay out placement ribbons and point out who has to stay for Best Owner-Handler.

I also act as an intermediary between the judge and exhibitors. If there's to be a handler change or late arrival, I let the judge know and get his permission before proceeding. On the odd occasion, I ask if we might wait a minute for someone to show up if they're held up elsewhere

And there's a bunch of things I do for the exhibitors. Professional handlers are on a very tight schedule and often interested in how many dogs have picked up before their breed goes in. Or exhibitors may want to know what class is in, or how fast the judge is, or if the major held.

It's a long and busy day and all I get from it is a free lunch. But it's an important job, one that requires knowledge of ring procedure, a cool head and a sense of priority.

195 149 How many of you knew that LNG, liquified natural gas, is not very flammable in that state and not at all explosive?

Posted by: People's Hippo Voice

🙋‍♀️ In lieu of putting numerous cylinders of gas, used for welding, on a ship undergoing SLEP, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard experimented in the 1980s with piping LPG onto the main decks. Welding lines only needed to be attached and dropped to where they were needed. (Though that could mean very long & possibly tangled welding lines.)

At the end of a shift, it was easier from a safety perspective to track that the lines had been pulled back to the main deck and disconnected, saving the need to travel through a large ship searching for a leaking gas line that was still attached to a regulator on a cylinder left in a lower compartment.
