9 So Proton's leaving Switzerland because the fascists have taken over. I'm really disappointed that they're thinking of going to Germany and Norway. I would have went with Albania because they're not fascists there; last I heard they were communists and when that didn't work out they just stole all the plumbing.

People have had heard voices and endured the thralls of psychosis from just watching TV or listening to music, let alone hearing their dog tell them to wax their whole family. If you're mentally ill, you're mentally ill, AI is no different from coloring in a coloring book, if you lose contact with reality, that's on you and your mental state.

16 Richard Lewis Springthorpe changed his name to Rick Springfield because Buffalo Springfield was already taken plus he was Australian. There never was a any Buffalo there so that was probably a good idea. He's also a pescatarian which is a lot like being a Unitarian but with less rules. He also became an American citizen which he announced when he was in Florida before being in Florida was fashionable.

As it has been some time since I was involved with tech nerds, the few who were female did not sport tats, non-earring piercings and were generally underweight. These days, if I were to return to such a space, having any females displaying such extreme characteristics would be an indication that I should look for some other place of employment.

28 from the warmer and friendlier article:

We’re making GPT-5 warmer and friendlier based on feedback that it felt too formal before. Changes are subtle, but ChatGPT should feel more approachable now.

You'll notice small, genuine touches like “Good question” or “Great start,” not flattery. Internal tests show no rise in sycophancy compared to the previous GPT-5 personality.

Changes may take up to a day to roll out, more updates soon.

44 In what should be the final chapter of the Trailing Arm Bushing saga...

It's in.

Just need to put two bolts in the trailing arm, install a brake line bracket that needed to be removed to gain access to the forward trailing arm bolt. Put the tire on, and see if the whole thing works.

Which s all a good thing because I need to do a dump run, mow the lawn and take the yard clippings to the lawn waste site today.

Seems like enough exercise that I can forgo the morning walk today.

72 Here's an actual tech related questioned. Is there something you can buy for a cell phone- not unlike a holster for a gun -to carry a cell phone? Recently we've had adventures- and not the thrilling Indiana Jones type of adventure- where the cell phone drops out of spouses pocket from shorts or shirt and the stupid "find your phone " doesn't say " Your phone is in your car trunk" but that it's. "Within 2/10 of a mile " so we've had to chase all over the beach or at the boardwalk.

And no, this was not the problem I asked prayer for yesterday and yes, we found the phone.

I leave the phone in the car's center console if I'm not likely to need it inside a store and won't be long. I know the heat is not good for phones. Certainly I leave it when I go into the library; I can turn the ringer off, of course, but I hate being tethered to the thing.

'Tis true. Democracy in Europe consists of asking the same question until the "correct" answer is given.

98 Your Guide to the Gen Z Term “Naur”

“Naur” is the word “no” spoken with an Australian accent.
It’s the literal spelling of how someone with an Australian accent says the word “no,” poking a bit of fun at the drawn-out and nasally-sounding word.

There was an arcade game back in the mid-'80s called "Major Havoc." You were an astronaut who had to thread your way through a maze full of deadly hazards to turn off a nuclear plant about to explode, then make your way back out. But you were given only so much air in your space suit, so you had a deadline. If you waited too long at the edge of a hazard, the little figure would fold its arms and tap its foot at you.

When you ran out of air, it would put its hands to its helmet, shake its head, and expire noisily: Game Over!

I always wear it when out of the house with my phone. Solid, secure velcro safely imprisons the phone.
On the hip, pockets are free.
Highly recommend.

I’ve never played it but I did see a video on YouTube awhile back where a player finishes the final levels and it looks quite difficult.

I think Pixy might’ve posted it here but I can remember.

While I fall asleep without a problem, I wake up a large number of times during the night. I fall asleep again quickly but it's annoying all the same.

I don't have coffee after the morning, don't drink, don't eat after about 6:00, etc., so I'm a bit baffled as to why this happens. I've started taking Gabapentin before going to bed, but I don't want to make it habitual. It may be that I'm just getting old and my sleep patterns have changed.

I took a day trip to Barrow long time ago. August 2nd. I got off the plane and it was snowing. Had lunch at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant (since burned down). Still have the baseball cap.

A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

My experience with black ice occurred in the spring of '75, driving north from Milwaukee to Green Bay and beyond. Daytime temperatures were above freezing and powdery snow was blowing across the cleared surface of the roads, so it melted. All was well and good until later in the afternoon when the temperatures began falling. That's when the black bands of snow melt across the road became black ice. It took but one episode of lost control and sliding, which I controlled, to persuade me to slow down.

It has always been thus. We celebrated the prom queen and jock while turning out engineers who built the Saturn V. However we no longer celebrate what engineers do.

134 A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

I totally disagree.

Math Olympiad Champs are a different breed and may not seek out the celebrity as a person who devotes their time to vanities (prom queen or jock). Many engineer types are not calibrated to seek out attention and the better ones are far more interested in solving problems than having their peers beat-off to their year-book photos.

Recognition be nice? Yes. Required? No.

Prom Queens, Social media influencers, jocks, all require recognition and constant praise or they end up with drug habits and drama.

Praise among technical/geek peers is far more valuable than a name flashed for a few seconds on the stadium's giant monitors.
