43 Top picture is scary. I had a friend who last his ass in a divorce. he ended up homeless and out in the woods talking to trees. The system completely broke him. I hadn't seen him for a few years, and one day he called out of the blue. He was being evicted from a ground floor apt he managed to get and needed help moving. When I showed up, that top pic is exactly what I walked into, probably a little worse actually. I used to think shit like that was myth. We spent all day with contractor bags and shovels and managed to excavate about 8 feet from the door. he said he was moving to a new place and wouldn't ever let this happen again. It did anyway. He died a few years ago, drugs finally got him.

96 GW learned from his dad, who projectile-vomited on the Japanese prime minister at a state dinner kind of thing.

The early MRE issue had a warning on one menu - “Not For Inflight/PreFlight Use”, because it contained Beans in Tomato Sauce. The gas produced apparently can cause serious issues in combination with rapid elevation changes in aircraft.

109 Today is National Day in Liechtenstein, which, given its size, basically amounts to an official block party.

The Royal Family kicked things off by opening up their palace and inviting everyone in for an aperitif, then there were bonfires and fireworks in the evening.

Seems like a nice, traditional celebration. As Liechtenstein isn't part of the EU, presumably there haven't been a lot of Muzzie invaders yet.

242 Happy 80th anniversary of Emperor Hirohito's radio address marking Japan's surrender.

There's some particular weird language in the speech many people notice, about "world events not having developed to Japan's advantage". Ya think?

But there's a reason for it, and it's that this rescript (an imperial pronouncement) had to be approved by the cabinet. And in the cabinet sat the army and navy ministers. Neither were exactly thrilled with the whole idea anyway, having been two of the 3 hardliners opposing acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration in the key imperial conference just days before.

To avoid offending them, particularly Army hardass Anami, the hilariously understated phrase above was used to describe "having our navy sunk, much of our army destroyed, every major city burnt to a cinder and two of them nuked, while starving under a blockade". The peace party was taking no chances, rightly unsure the military wasn't still going to derail things somehow.

Hoarding is often triggered by trauma. Sometimes unexpected deaths of loved ones, with women it is often sexual abuse at a young age. I think the tendency is probably already there...as children, they often had various collections..but there is usually some sort of trauma involved.

Not always, but a very large percentage.

369 It might have been Lewis & Clark who described them, but for sure there was one Indian nation early on that didn’t partake in the Firewater.

Their chief laid it out like this - if you want us to get drunk, then you have to pay us. Why would we be your source of entertainment or ridicule for free? Sadly most tribes didn’t have chiefs like that.

Speaking of nobility trading off their children, it was customary for the chiefs to offer their wives and such to visiting dignitaries for a roll in the TeePee, this caused some diplomatic difficulties with Lewis and Clark because it was considered a great insult, naturally, to refuse.

395 My marriage rule for 1913 would be:
Don't marry a short or thin guy who is not manly! What on earth was going on then?

If you marry him don't whine about it! He has other good qualities. At least a sense of humor and bought you a huge house. I guess! You can't be that desperate if he had no good reasons to marry him! Right?

I would let him go to work in a violet tie and grass green socks. Because if he dressed in either I would have given up and questioned why I was with him at all, much less if he wore them together. I guess throw this crap out and shop for the poor man!

I did once, before children, greet him at the door after his job with nothing on but a coat and a beer (for him). I think this counts for something, but apparently not in 1913.

I have never followed rules and am thankful we have none in this house that we discussed or wrote down. Wut?

There may be some rules but I have gone along with them for so long I can't remember.

I think he, on his own, lowers the toilet seat. He does not whine if I don't make him dinner every night, as we have stuff in the freezer.

Basically I have trained him well, life is good and I still make him laugh.

410 I’ve found some of those old survey markers, way off the beam, in horrible terrain, not bench marks (elevation) but marking sections or whatever. 1909 was when they did a lot, apparently. They didn’t have Suzukis! Always wondered how they managed. Tough SOBs
Posted by: Common Tater at August 16, 2025 12:03 AM (Nh0yW)
[

Chain, transit, compass and a mule. Until the 90's that is what they taught in forest surveying, and that is what the instructors learned. Add in a diameter tape, a clinometer and a prism for determining basal area of a stand, and you had all the tools you needed in your vest.

There were GPS based "speak and spells" that would do half the measuring and siting for you, but they wouldn't let students touch them. We had to use trig, and be happy we had TI calculators and didn't have to use the tables.

412 I think the Gen Z thing is just some autist referencing the German WWII marching song:

At least that's the best explanation I've heard, and it makes sense given the lyrics of Erika.

But still, why? Gotta be some kind of inside joke or story . . . wouldn't make sense unless Amberlynn somehow got the reference.

She was gonna be an actress, she was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass on the hood of Whitesnake's car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life, and nothing has been alright

With Springstein, Madonna, way before Nirvana.
Blah blah blah

I was a freshman, failing high school. Full head of awesome hair down to the middle of my back. Drunk every weekend and stoned all week. Trying to find some place to plug in my amp. No direction, lost and convinced we were all gonna die before 2000 so nothing mattered. Or was it 1991?

I couldn't have TRIED harder, that would imply I tried at all.

Army woke my stupid ass up pretty good though.

I've figured out the TRUE key to a couple being happy?

Neither can be completely convinced that the other will never leave... because once that happens? They quit trying. If you stop having to convince your partner you want to be with them? That will eventually doom a relationship, if they have any self respect.

Posted by: Romeo13 at August 16, 2025 02:08 AM (mP0Kj)

427 True, Romeo13

Also-- sometimes they just quit trying anyway. Because current partner isn't *sparkly* enough anymore.

Posted by: JQ at August 16, 2025 02:31 AM (rdVOm)

428 XH told me to "get the hell out of" his life. Those words. So, I did. Went completely no contact.

He came crawling back several years later, got ahold of my family, wanted to meet up. (WTAF?)

Nope. Nope. No EFFING way.

Posted by: Romeo13 at August 16, 2025 02:08 AM (mP0Kj)

Not our problem, at all. Both DH and I know we are soul mates. Neither would ever leave. Can't. We are two halves of the whole. To leave would mean certain death of the soul.

We've been through some perfectly awful things together but we've always landed on our feet. Things that really should have torn us apart have never done so.

I consider myself by far the luckiest woman on the planet because of just that. To have found that sort of love after years of loneliness and misery is... I have no words.
