Gavin Newsom Gives "Rally" Speech to Nearly Empty Room to Push for an Amendment Allowing Him to Gerrymander the State Even Harder

California is already heavily gerrymandered, as Scott Jennings in a clip below points out. 40% of voters are Republican, but Republicans only have 17% of the state's congressional seats.

Liberals like to pretend that they are far better people than they are, so state law mandates that congressional lines be drawn by an "independent commission," this commission being Democrat-dominated and producing the congressional split of 40 Democrats to 12 Republicans.

But this fake "independent commission" presents impediments to Newsom's presidential primary stunt of redrawing the maps now, and only on his own authority, so he staged a "rally" filled with Democrat office-holders and almost no one else to propagandize for a constitutional amendment that will give him all of the power.

Voters are skeptical of Newsom's power-grab.

A new poll shows strong opposition to Gov. Gavin Newsom's plan to shift redistricting power from California's independent commission to the Democrat-led Legislature.

Key Details:

Newsom's proposal would transfer congressional map-drawing authority from the constitutionally mandated independent commission to the state Legislature, requiring voter approval in a November referendum.
A Politico--Citrin Center--Possibility Lab survey found Californians prefer the independent panel over legislative control by a wide margin, undercutting Democrats' justification for the overhaul.
Newsom has threatened to redraw California's maps to net Democrats new seats, claiming it would "offset" GOP gains in Texas. Proposed maps are expected to be unveiled Tuesday.

A "leaked" plan shows that Newsom would steal five more seats from Republicans, reducing the Republican delegation from 12 to 7.

I don't believe this, though. I think this leak is intended for one audience: Governor Abbott of Texas. I think Newsom's pretending he can cut this many seats to get Abbott to back off.

Because I don't believe you can gerrymander 40% of the population so hard they only have five districts where they form the majority.

And also: Abbott has already threatened to re-district and take eight seats from Democrats, so bring it on, Hair-Gel.

The New York Times asks "Is Texas really less gerrymandered than California, or is that just another Republican lie?"

Check out this typical "fact-check" treatment:

In a recent defense of Republican efforts to redraw Texas' congressional maps with a greater Republican advantage, Vice President JD Vance criticized the current maps in California as an extreme gerrymander. There, he suggested, Democrats had already given themselves an egregious number of safe blue seats in Congress.

While Mr. Vance ignored that California's maps are drawn by an independent commission, not Democrats, he cited a seemingly simple statistic as proof: the partisan breakdown of the state's congressional delegation as compared with the statewide partisan vote share.

The "independent" commission is dominated by Democrats. The Democrats like to pretend they're for "reform" and "good, clean government," so they set up "independent commissions," supposedly, to take the politics out of politics.

But then they pack those "independent commissions" full of partisan Democrats. Democrats want the appearance of non-partisan politics, but not the reality of it.

Democrats control about 80 percent of California's seats in the U.S. House but earned roughly 60 percent of the statewide vote in the 2024 presidential election, a more than 20 percent point disparity. Texas Republicans won 58 percent of the vote, yet hold 66 percent of the seats -- an 8-point gap.

This is why I say this is a "typical fact-check:" They concede that a "simple statistic" proves that the Republican is telling the truth, but they then say: But what are statistics anyway? Just lies told by the White Man with numbers.

But this statistic, taken by itself, ignores several critical factors, like how voters are geographically sorted in a state; how close the elections were in some of those congressional districts; the importance of protecting the rights of voters of color; and the ability of a popular congressional incumbent to run against statewide trends.

All of this is just commie gobbedlygook to distract from the main point: Yes, California much more heavily gerrymandered than Texas was.

And most of them were party hacks:

106 people turned out, most of them employees of Newsom.

Newsom chummed the waters with more assassin-bait. They'll keep trying until they get their dead president.

And also also:

OH has to redistrict again this year. They could add 2 seats. Other states could redistrict as well, including IN and FL and MO.

The only way to counter all of that would be to create what's colloquially called a dummymander: a gerrymander so absurd it blows up in the planners' faces by making too many thin districts.

California’s analysis confirms it—Gavin Newsom’s scheme to ram through a gerrymandered congressional map would cost taxpayers over $200 million. I was right all along. This is nothing more than a partisan power grab that drains our budget and undermines fair representation.

I think any fair read on districting has to just ignore states with fewer than 5 districts.

A 60-40 state giving all four seats to the party that won 60? I don't think that's stretching it too much.

It's not fair at all, but them's the breaks.

Gerrymandering is the winnings of political warfare. Democrats figured that out decades ago. They were right to do it.

If the Republicans in MA want more representation in Congress, then they need to work harder to get reps in their state legislature who will make that happen.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, searching for thrills with John Frankenheimer at August 15, 2025 02:14 PM (GBKbO)

51 I honestly hope he goes through with this and it "passes."

Why?

1) Most in CA are against it (because they are very, very stupid people who think slapping a "nonpartisan" sticker on a pile of shit really tranmorgifies it to nonpartisan)

2) their calculations on gaining 5 more seats are almost certainly based on 2020 and 2024 numbers.
So, not just assuming fraud, but also assuming all the illegals will be there AND none of the Trump federal-level reforms will be in place.
(Yes, a clown judge has an injunction against it now. And it will fall on appeal.)

3) and most of all, because they have already gerrymandered so much, they will almost certainly dilute several safe seats to create these new districts.
Which they will lose.

I'll bet this, instead of netting them 5 new Dem seats, will net the Republicans 5 new seats.

If they wanna get 51%+ of any issue put before the CA electorate, they have ways of getting that done.

90 I once wrote a huge essay bout gerrymandering that was very popular, but I foolishly posted it only at PJMedia, and not at zombietime -- and now the link is broken. Sigh.

Anyway, the essay clearing explained how gerrymandering works -- a combination of "cracking" and "packing." If you have too many ofn your party's vote jammed inton one district, you "crack" it by carving out wasted votes and moving them over the neighboring districts that need them. Meanwhile, you "pack" as many opposing voters all into ne district, so they get wasted.

The goal of gerrymandering is to win every district by 51%. If done perfectly, you can disenfranchise 49.9% of voters.

But there's a hitch.

Voters are not always stable and consistent. Gerrymandering can backfire, spectacularly. If you cut the margin too small, and the voter preference shifts just a little bit, then you end up gifting a distirct to the opposing side. With that in mind, they usually try to build in a margin for error -- maybe 55%.

But with Trump-level voter shifts, even 55% isn't safe. I'd be willing to bet the Newsom's "clever" gerrymandering plan will backfire--the GOP will take some seats presumed to be Dem.

all it did was piss people off. The Gestapo looked stupid standing around trying to be all macho, but you can see how nervous they were. And almost all masked like the little chumps they are. People outside hated them for their little charade.

“Wake up, America,” Newsom said. “Wake up to what's happening not just here in Los Angeles, where we saw our streets militarized, where we saw due process rights thrown out the window.”

many times has Donnie Dumb Ass threatened to have Newsom arrested? Had the opportunity to do just that but they decided to pick on some poor immigrant instead. Chicken shits. Just fucking do it, ya fucking cowards!!!! We all know they want to go there. Then just fucking go there and catch the fucking wrath!!

Donnie can't even get evil dictator right. He's a failure at everything.

Part of Arnold's political naiveté was believing in things like independent commissions. And I'm sure plenty might say he wanted the state to stay dominated by Democrats, but he really, really hates gerrymandering so i think he honestly believed in the idea of the "independent commission"

Problem is no one is really independent. Especially government employees.

A reapportionment now based on the corrected 2020 numbers would mean 2 seats, probably, lost for CA.

After deporting millions and maybe even successfully not counting illegals at all and having a Census more interested in correct counts than "underrepresented voices" like the last guy outright said...

"Fair" for districting would mean getting a Congressional delegation roughly in line with the makeup of the voters, playing few games with district lines in order for the voters of the state to have proportional representation through the two main political parties that hold seats in Congress.

It's a perfectly salient point that Texas getting closer to CA's makeup, or IL's, in that manner just brings Texas in line with long-standing, uncontroversial tactics used by Democrats and should be treated the same way by the press as they treated something like NY redistricting last year to eliminate a few Republicans from their delegation.

True story:

My former I(now-retired) doctor told me that he wuld get creepy guys signing up as his patients, coming in for their first checkups, and DEMANDING that he give them "digital rectal exams," the standard way to look for evidence of prostate cancer. He'd try to tell them, "You're far too young to worry about that now. The exam is not necessary." But they'd insist and insist. If he absolutely refused, they give him 1-star reviews on Yelp and ZocDoc, or even worse, sue him for malpractice. So after a whle he started to cave in and would give them exams if they insisted. However, these guys (here's the gross part) would already have erections as they disrobed for the exam, and were obviously getting off on it, and part of the kink was not simple that they wanted to be penetrated, but more importantly they enjoyed the sadistic victory of having FORCED someone to do it, like a passive reverse-rape.

That's why I said "If someone suggests." As to anyone making moral districts, I think they have to start at the neighborhood level, or even block level, and group like-minded people together. And your chances of doing that in a non-partisan manner is almost nil. Hence, making it a political act.

- Ballot Harvesting
- Motor voter registrations

- Mailed out ballots to the dead, voters old addresses, nursing homes, etc

If they wanna get 51%+ of any issue put before the CA electorate, they have ways of getting that done.
