Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - August 19, 2025 [scampydog]![]() Been waiting for this one to drop. Whiny article. J-6 FBI Investigator fired. Former top South Carolina FBI official Steven Jensen, who was promoted to lead the prestigious Washington field office in March, was fired this week because of his work investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to multiple news reports. Jensen was fired because he participated in and helped lead investigations into the thousands of people who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to reports by CNN, The New York Times and The Washington Post.*** And the 10/10 portion of the story. Since he was fired after serving 19 years and four months (according to his Linked In profile), he won’t be eligible for an FBI pension, which comes after serving 20 years, federal officials familiar with the FBI told The State. ![]() Cities and their architecture. I’m no expert in architectural styles. Dogs chase their tails, after all - but most of us know what we like when we see it. Art Deco, Gothic, Brutalist, Spanish, etc. What about you? Which styles catch your eye, and in which cities do you most enjoy the architecture? International flair America! Solid advice. Should be ignored however, in the comments.
It all started with one woman’s brain back in the 1990s. She was 81 when she died, and researchers were doing a routine examination of her donated brain tissue. They figured they’d find the usual stuff – protein clumps, damaged cells, all the wear and tear that comes with eight decades of living. Instead, they found something that made them do a double-take. Her brain looked almost identical to someone 30 years younger. Where they expected to see dozens of protein tangles gumming up her memory circuits, they found just one. One single tangle in her entire memory center. Now if they can figure out how to make the body look like a 30-year old. *** So what do they all have in common? They’re incredibly social people. SuperAgers are the ones hosting dinner parties, volunteering at local organizations, maintaining close friendships, and staying deeply connected to their communities. They genuinely enjoy being around other people and rate their relationships way more positively than typical agers. Til Tuesday. Aimee Mann. NSFW
According to GoDaddy's survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers, only 20% of respondents say customer service has improved recently, compared to 42% who perceive a decline in the quality of service received. Among Gen X and Boomers, pessimism is particularly pronounced: just 12% say customer service has improved and 46% believe it has worsened. In contrast, 29% of Gen Z and 31% of Millennials say support has gotten better, suggesting the next generation of shoppers is more positive about the state of customer care. "The generational divide is striking. Young consumers are more likely to give businesses the benefit of the doubt, but they also have higher expectations for speed, flexibility and friendliness," said GoDaddy Small Business Trends Expert Amy Jennette. This ONT brought to you by nudging: Some good ideas in the comments last week. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: mindful webworker - assiduously at August 19, 2025 10:00 PM (xXY7/) 2

Maybe they could re-shoot it with Sydney Sweeney. Guitarist, keyboardist, drummer: "Watch us put on our Rock Faces and thrash around like we're playing something serious! .....while we play something a random ten-year-old could learn during recess." Bassist: "Watch me stand here like I'm in line at the DMV, while I play the only line that requires any thought at all." Posted by: mikeski at August 19, 2025 10:20 PM (DgGvY) 95

Posted by: San Franpsycho at August 19, 2025 10:36 PM (RIvkX) That was tonight's dinner. Cob of Taber peaches and cream corn, on the top rack of the grill, with the marinated steak on the lower rack. Yummy! Taber, in the south of Alberta, has a climate region conducive to growing sweet corn, potatoes, and sugar beets. Come corn harvest, you will find trucks selling Taber corn in small towns, and on the corners of mall parking lots in the cities. Little-known factoid: There are two micro-climate zones in Northern Alberta where delicious sweet corn is grown, the valleys of the Peace River, and of the Smoky River, a major tributary to the Peace. Both rivers run through deep canyons, and the canyon walls trap the Sun's heat and create a micro-climate conducive to corn growing. Chip seal is the municipality's way of saying "Fuck You" as they let you know in no uncertain terms that you only get stale crumbs from the massive amount of taxes it rakes in. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at August 19, 2025 10:45 PM (a4flb) 185

My 95-yr old mother is back in the hospital again. She got another nose bleed, and as we feared, her platelets had crashed again, down to 14K/uL. All her other blood values are normal, so this looks like what that call ITP, an autoimmune attack on the platelets. Apparently, this is a thing that can happen when one is very much 29. They've got her back on immunoglobulin and steroids, which will get them back up. But this is apparently going to be a long term problem. The Fixx was the peak of my music world 83-86. Loved all their early stuff on both vinyl and tapes had it playing constantly. Shortly after music streaming started they pulled all their classic albums, their best stuff, from Shuttered Room to Walkabout from all services - to this day, none of those albums are available. Actually contacted them via a MGMT Co and was essentially told to go pound sand and buy digital copies which I'd do if the music services allowed seamless integration of your own copies into streaming lists. Sucks to say but fck the Fixx, won't see them again live either. Fck em.

So, President Trump wanted to know if the CIA, the DIA, or the FBI was the the best. So he released a rabbit in the woods and demanded to see who could find it. The CIA went first. They trained birds and squirrels to be informants, and questioned all the rocks and trees, and came back three weeks later, claiming the rabbit never existed in the first place. The DIA went next. They put the forest to the torch, put out the stumps, and returned three weeks later, claiming the rabbit must surely have burned along with the rest. On the subject of architecture, I've spent most of my life in Chicago, and it's a great place for architecture. And much of it is concentrated in the downtown area, so it can be seen on a walking tour. A great time to visit will be the weekend of October 18-19, which will be Open House Chicago weekend. Most of the great buildings throughout the city will be open for visitors to walk through.
Detroit and Milwaukee also have many fine buildings. Milwaukee's Bradley Center, where the Milwaukee Symphony plays, is art deco to the max: you have to see it to believe it! As for foreign cities, the only one I know at all well is Madrid. The area around the Plaza Mayor is rich in both architecture and history. A walk from there to the royal palace, or down to the Prado, is richly rewarding. Well worth visiting. Posted by: Nemo at August 19, 2025 10:52 PM (4RPgu) 215

I think vine ripened tomatoes can be a revelation. What varieties they have to grow to make a tomato that will make it to a distant grocery shelf unblemished diminishes the flavor. Just like the most colorful rose often has the least scent, there are always compromises. Citrus fruit off your own trees is wonderful, but not so much better than store bought in taste because it’s already packaged in that handy rind for travel. So less compromise, more flavor either way, store bought or fresh picked at home (have to live in the right climate, though!).

Just looked on Yelp, seems that ABC is still there. I was there in 1985.
Back then, though they were fairly old, there were still some of the Graf Spee crewmen as waiters. The guy we had definitely had a very thick German accent. According to a Yelp entry, Mengele used to dine there when he visited from his secret life in Paraguay. Pretty wild. Kicked myself forever for not doing a story on it after. Wasn't widely known at the time, when I checked around (the Graf Spee crew part). And I was doing some articles during my travels in that period. Various cherry/grape tomatoes produced good crop this year. As usual, some kind of weird malady affected the plants (probably a fungus, I slacked on applying the copper spray regularly). Every year it's different. No cut worms this time. Aggressive early use of Sevin seemed to nuke them.
I was a lazy farmer this time. Usually plant 2-3 more plants mid-summer for a fall harvest. Also very bad basil year, usually grow a lot and make lots of pesto that I freeze. Still making basil lemonade though, amazing. And hoping the mizuna does better in the larger pots (vs. first crop in spring). Posted by: rhomboid at August 19, 2025 11:33 PM (U/Byj) 319

We did have some peaceful protests here in Anchorage when Trump and Putin were in town (protests here are always peaceful, mainly because everyone is armed to the teeth -- we don't play that burn, loot, murder shit here). The worst thing was that some dipshit vandalized a gate sign at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. He's been caught and jailed. Photo here: https://tinyurl.com/havt3b2v Doesn't look at all like the type, amiright? LOL! In another article, the Anchorage Daily News (which has long been called, UNaffectionately, the Daily Worker) claimed there was a massive anti-Trump rally. And yet, somehow, when I passed one of the protest locations there were easily 5x as many Trump supporters than communists. Weird, huh? Trump carried this state by nearly 15 points. I leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide which version is more likely to be accurate. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at August 19, 2025 11:48 PM (qpyNK) 348

Don Black, beans *from* Sumatra, not just a variety? Any noticeable tariff effect?
In cigars Sumatra leaf is very popular, but most of it is grown in the New World (Ecuador mostly), so it's technically "Sumatra seed" leaf. Manual burr grinder? Sounds interesting. Probably will need a burr grinder if I get a good espresso machine. For French press, a pretty coarse grind is called for, right? My town had a No Kangz rally a while back. The FNM claimed it was a huge success. First rule of government work...don't kill the job. In my town the government has been working on adding a lane to a stretch of road for 10 years now. I couldn’t choke it down. That’s bad. The story I read somewhere, futures traders have warehouses, probably in New Jersey somewhere and maintain huge bags of coffee on hand for possible delivery to satisfy futures trading. This doesn’t happen very often, and can sit around for years, decades even. But sometimes it gets sold. Blech

Little Debbie used to be like the mafia with the local grocery stores. One of the local managers got to talking about that. If you wanted to sell Little Debbie, they had requirements about product placement. They demanded primo locations in the store, and had rules about no competition could allowed next to their displays. And their own people would come out and arrange and stock the displays. That appears to have changed now, and I see rival brands right next to Little Debbie now, including the Food Lion store brands. I think Covid and the mess there was the main driver. And now, they just ain't puttin' up with Little Debbie's shit any more. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 20, 2025 12:51 AM (w6EFb) 516

> Folgers coffee used to have … one (1) flavor.
Something changed at some point, a long time ago. Posted by: Common Tater at August 20, 2025 12:38 AM (XQS41) For sure. My family was a Folger's family when I was a kid, and so was I until Serious Gourmet Shit coffee became a thing. About 15 years ago I forgot to buy more beans, so I hustled (more like crawled) down the nearby convenience store and bought a bag of Folger's. Got home, made a pot, dumped it out, and forced myself to trek to a real coffee shop. My theory is that the company went on the skids after the last Folger died (if I'm not mistaken, the sole heiress was Abigail Folger, who got murdered by the Manson family). Took a decade or two to rot away completely, but rot it did. "That's why I know Manson ain't gonna get out of jail. As long as they make coffee that motherfucker's gonna be in jail." -- Richard Pryor Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at August 20, 2025 12:56 AM (qpyNK) 538

I wonder what would happen if you took the pre-made pastry dough (making it from scratch would be way too much work for junk food) and put canned pie filling in it? Or lemon Jello pudding and pie filling? (again, doing it from scratch would defeat the purpose).
Spoon it into the pastry, cover with another piece, seal the edges, and drop that sucker in a deep fryer. I'll have to try it the next time I get up the gumption to break out the deep fryer. I usually try to make something like donuts when the oil is fresh. Then I fry a package of bacon in it. After that, french fries or tots, which get a luscious bacon flavoring. (salivating...) They removed the fat ($$) from canned soups and stews, and replaced the missing calories with corn syrup basically. Stew meat is too expensive now, replaced with meat scraps and floor sweepings held together with “meat glue”. Hormel Chili, Dinty Moore used to be OK, if not great.

The coconut water out of fresh coconuts on the beach in Brazil was pretty good. But always felt a bit apprehensive about flagging down a vendor. Of course they knew what they were doing, but they opened the thing (still in its big outer husk) with lusty chops of a machete, while holding it in the other hand. Couldn't even watch it. They'd expertly make a small whole in one end, then pour it out like a jug into a plastic cup. Only time I think I've had coconut water.

Camel used to advertise they paid more for better tobaccos at auction, the lighter leaf. Higher sugar content, less nicotine.
What was weird, all those old school brands were available in Europe, that you never see in US outlets. They only had 19 cigarettes in a pack. And they all tasted the same, regardless of brand. Like shit, or smoking celery. America made good cigarettes, whiskey, and nuclear weapons. Posted by: Common Tater at August 20, 2025 01:11 AM (XQS41) 578
Spaghetti-os were pretty gnarly even when I was a kid. I’m sure they are not improved. Canned food has gotten so bad, even with my Cro-Magnon palate I just can’t eat canned (meats) any longer. I make my own Chili or stew or whatever from scratch.
Posted by: Common Tater at August 20, 2025 12:50 AM (XQS41) On sale, I'll buy corned beef or Spam. I like to have those around for when I'm lazy. Those two canned meats are nostalgia for me. Now the other canned meats I liked, I now make: Chicken salad/deviled ham/roast beef spread. 616 BEER Vending Machine at the Petty Officer Barracks in San Diego... 1979
Posted by: Romeo13 ---------- Whoa, whoa. What is the beer vending machine you speak of. And why has it been excluded from my lifetime? Was in San Diego a lot in the early 90's. No such vending at that time. Posted by: scampydog at August 20, 2025 01:44 AM (41CYW) Was in BE/E school in San Diego, living in the barracks in late 79... and yes, there was ONE Beer Vending Machine at the PO Barracks... we were not supposed to use it... but... being 20... Was over at the old NTC site... where the old boot camp was... now gone apparently. Posted by: Romeo13 at August 20, 2025 02:06 AM (mP0Kj) 624

Fuck. Who eats like that? I bet she rides a lard cart at Walmart. Meanwhile, I'm eating fresh veggies out of the garden. This week the beans came in, so I will be canning a bunch of them. Tomatoes are nearly done, but we had some tonight along with a bit of lettuce, and I just put 4 gallons of raspberries in the freezer.
