The Corrs with Bono
Yes, Bono is a colossal d-bag - but Andrea Corr in this video is hawt, and she has an amazing voice. Bono is actually pretty good here, too.

I know nothing about Barrie James O'Neill, but Lana is also hawt with a lovely voice.

Trash writing from the BBC

A buddy of mine - fellow bourbon lover - sent this article to me earlier today.

How Kentucky bourbon went from boom to bust

The headline says "WENT" - as in past tense, something that already happened.

Then here is the lead sentence:

As American as apple pie, Kentucky bourbon was booming after the last Great Recession ended. But as the economy has waned post-Pandemic - and with multiple trade wars on the horizon - the market may be drying up.

"MAY" be drying up?? So did it happen - or is it just something that might happen?

But like most market bubbles, this one was bound to burst. The pandemic's lockdowns tanked bar sales, and inflation has made many would-be bourbon drinkers choose less expensive options - or forgo drinking all together. Amongst Gen-Z, many 20-somethings are drinking less than their older siblings and parents did at their age.

Those factors have contributed to declining alcohol sales, with bourbon sales specifically slowing down to just 2% between 2021-2024, according to IWSR data.

So there was a bubble, and it was bound to burst. Makes sense. Decent analysis in those 2 lines - credit where it is due.

President Donald Trump's global tariffs have been the final straw. The EU has announced retaliatory tariffs against US goods, including Kentucky bourbon and Californian wine, although implementation has been delayed for six months.

Ah - the all-important dig at Trump. No "real" journalism-ing would be complete without it! "The final straw"?? Trump killed the industry already? Of course not. Check out these (not-so) supporting facts:

These economic pressures have created a growing list of casualties.

Liquor giant Diageo, reported that sales of Bulleit, a Kentucky distillery that makes bourbon, rye and whiskey, where down 7.3% this fiscal year.

Wild Turkey - a Kentucky bourbon owned by Campari - sales were down 8.1% over the past six months.

In July, LMD Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy - just one month after opening the Luca Mariano Distillery in Danville, Kentucky.

And in January, Jack Daniel's parent company closed a barrel-making plant in Kentucky.

Diageo's fiscal year just started on July 1. A month ago. Not nearly enough time to make predictions or show cause/effect connections.

Wild Turkey sales down over the past 6 months? Must be Trump tariffs to blame, right? But the author already said the implementation has been delayed 6 months. And Trump has only been in office a little more than 6 months.

LMD Holdings has been a "Non Distilling Producer" (NDP) for many years. They buy whiskey from a producer (possibly MGP in Indiana, but I don't know that for sure), then they bottle and/or label it with their own branding. They took on millions of dollars of debt to buy a property in KY with the hopes of making a distillery and a related "experience". That is a risky endeavor. It appears to have failed. Trump's fault, right?!?!

The barrel making facility closed in January. The month Trump took office. See - it's HIS FAULT!!

Trump has said that tariffs will boost made-in-American businesses.

But Republican Senator Rand Paul, who represents Kentucky, said the tariffs will hurt local businesses and consumers in his home state.

"Well, tariffs are taxes, and when you put a tax on a business, it's always passed through as a cost. So, there will be higher prices," he told ABC's "This Week" in May.

Tricky little piece of bias here. Senator Paul did indeed say those words. However, the writer seems to want readers to believe he said them specifically about bourbon. Wrong! He was talking in more general terms and mentioned China and WalMart.

Read the whole article for yourself and make up your own mind. Even you folks on the other side of the Scotch vs Bourbon divide might back me up on this one!

Oh wait - there's more!

Irish Whiskey Distilleries Are Shuttering Because of Trump’s Trade Tariffs

The Killarney Brewing & Distilling Co. closed down last month, resulting in the loss of about 50 jobs, according to Bloomberg. The company, which started as a tap room in Kerry a decade ago before debuting its blended whiskey last year, was battling those industry-wide problems, but says “tariffs on Irish whiskey exports to the U.S. and wider economic uncertainty” were the final nail in the coffin.

Eoin O Cathain, director of the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA), which represents 47 distillers, or 98 percent of the industry, says Irish whiskey makers have been struggling over the past couple of years. “But then this year, in particular for our SMEs (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises), when the talk of tariffs first started, that raised a lot of concerns,” O Cathain told Bloomberg. “It made it more difficult to keep the head above water.”

Emphasis mine. The article is headlined to put the blame solely on Trump's tariffs - even though there were many other contributing factors.

Can anything like this happen in the Longbow realm?

Man Survives Two Days with Crossbow Bolt Stuck in His Brain

doof-crossbow.jpg

A 64-year-old Italian man was found conscious in his bed two days after shooting himself in the head with a crossbow from very close range.

The unidentified Ancona resident, a known crossbow enthusiast, was found in his home by local police (carabinieri) following an emergency services phone call from a concerned family member. After forcing open the man’s door, the carabinieri found him lying in bed with the end of a crossbow bolt sticking out of his forehead. He was immediately transported to the local hospital, conscious, with his eyes open. According to the doctors’ report, he ‘babbled incoherently, but could still speak,” despite his serious injury. The bolt prevented him from turning his head, and hospital staff learned that he had not eaten or drunk anything in two days, ever since the crossbow incident.

Ouch. What else can be said?

Go North, Eh!

For One Summer Only, You’ll Be Able to Take a Rare Train Ride Through Jasper and Banff National Parks

Luxury train operator Rocky Mountaineer will offer a new scenic rail itinerary through two of Canada’s most beautiful national parks for one season only.

doof-train-alberta.jpg

Rocky Mountaineer, the luxury train company known for its glass-domed coaches and slow-travel ethos, is charting a new course through the Canadian Rockies next year—one that will be available to passengers for only a few weeks.

Dubbed “Passage to the Peaks,” the just-announced route will run between Banff and Jasper in Alberta, Canada, in June and July 2026. Unlike Rocky Mountaineer’s other offerings that typically start in Jasper or Banff and end in Vancouver (or vice versa), this new itinerary stays entirely within the Canadian Rockies, offering travelers a deep dive into one of North America’s most dramatic alpine regions.

The train will trace a historic stretch of rail between the gateway towns to two of Canada’s most beloved national parks, climbing past glacial lakes, hanging valleys, and the jagged summits of the Continental Divide. Among the highlights visible from the train: the thunderous, multi-tiered Pyramid Falls, and the towering face of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at just under 13,000 feet.

Travelers can book the two-day train journey on its own, which includes an overnight stop in Kamloops, a riverside town roughly halfway between Banff and Jasper. Alternatively, they can opt for one of several extended packages (up to 10 days) that include hotel stays and excursions in Banff and Jasper, as well as in Calgary (the largest city in Alberta) and Lake Louise (a famously stunning turquoise glacial lake within Banff National Park). The longer options add experiences such as cruising Lake Minnewanka, hiking on the Columbia Icefield (one of the largest accumulations of ice south of the Arctic Circle), and riding the Banff Gondola and Jasper SkyTram. The extended itineraries will operate as motor-coach tours (apart from the two days on the train).

Looks like an incredible trip! Bonus -- by then, Alberta might belong to the USA.

50 The bourbon market is so oversaturated. And I would imagine that has a lot to do with having a market crash, if there is such a thing. It’s more like a boom bust type thing to me. People would stand in line for hours to try to get one of maybe six bottles of some special release at their local liquor store. It became a fad and like all fads, one day they end. The good quality bourbons will survive.

67 I noticed, also, that your bourbon article ignored what would have been a massive sales month for all parties involved. Before the announced tariffs (but in anticipation of them) there would have been a large increase in the usual import/export amounts to stock up in the event that future economic agreements required adjusting supply and requisition.

There is no bump, which suggests the author just made up the numbers to fit the narrative.

74 The bourbon market is so oversaturated.
Posted by: Jen the original at August 11, 2025 10:19 PM (bQG/7)

I follow a lot of bourbon groups online. The standing in line people are often called Taters. They like to win a game that only they are playing.

There is a reason some brands have been around since before most of us were born. They are just solid bottles. Give me a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel any day of the week. Readily available everywhere for no more than $50. 100 proof greatness!

"Footage shared by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela showed China Coast Guard vessel 3104 tailing Philippine patrol ship BRP Suluan at high speeds while spraying its water cannon around 11 nautical miles east of the contested Scarborough Shoal.

As it closed in on the Philippine vessel, the Chinese coast guard ship suddenly slammed into a larger Chinese Navy destroyer that unexpectedly passed between the Philippine vessel and the Chinese cutter. The footage, taken from aboard the Suluan, reveals significant damage to the hulls of both Chinese vessels."

The badly damaged vessel had been chasing the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) cutter BRP Suluan on a resupply mission in the shoal at the time.

PCG personnel were distributing aid to fishermen in the shoal when the incident occurred approximately 10.5 nautical miles east of Bajo de Masinloc,

89 LMD Holdings has been a "Non Distilling Producer" (NDP) for many years. They buy whiskey from a producer (possibly MGP in Indiana, but I don't know that for sure), then they bottle and/or label it with their own branding. They took on millions of dollars of debt to buy a property in KY with the hopes of making a distillery and a related "experience". That is a risky endeavor.

93 "Well, tariffs are taxes, and when you put a tax on a business, it's always passed through as a cost. So, there will be higher prices," he told ABC's "This Week" in May.

This is starting to piss me off. Always? Why is it binary? What if some only tariffs pass through 50% or 25%, with the remainder eaten by producers and importers? Is it impossible that we get a dollar in revenue while Americans pay less than a dollar?

I don't love the tariffs and there's a ton of entangled issues, but The Numbers don't seem to show a 1:1 relationship. Ask Jerry Powell, he only follows data rather than predictions, like expecting inflation rising. He'd never do that.

97 That bit about bourbon also seems to leave out an important detail: Trump's tariffs are retaliatory, and are placed on goods coming into America, NOT going out. There can't be a tariff on bourbon because bourbon is made in America. And Europe already imposes a tariff on it. Is it possible that some ingredients might go up in price? Maybe. But, the point of bourbon is that it is made not only in America, but with American ingredients. Heck, Europe imports American bourbon barrels to season their port and such.

Then they came out, chopped it up and ground the stump. Nice big old oak tree that provided most of my shade.

Lots of bourbon producers get started buying from a place like MGP (Midwest Grain Products in Indiana). There is some outstanding whiskey produced there. It is the former Seagrams facility. Very interesting business model for MGP and they really do help a lot of small companies get started. WhistlePig is a great example.

The second part of your comment is more on the mark, in my opinion. They tried to make a bourbon "experience" - Disneyland, as you called it. As another commenter mentioned, even the name invokes more of a winery feel. I've been to a dozen or more stops on the KY Bourbon Trail. The best ones are the distilleries that have been around for a long time. Not the overly kitschy "experiences" (looking at you, Heaven Hill).

But it is the closest western point where the CP rail line (Kicking Horse Pass, Banff, etc.) meets the CN rail line (Yellowhead Pass, Jasper, etc.) Both lines cross 2 major mountain ranges to get from the Prairie side to Kamloops. It's a long haul from Kamloops to either Banff or Jasper, close to 6 hours by road in each case.

123 funny you mention Tsiolkovsky. I was looking into a SF game which featured a bomb that could delete a planet.
Apparently the energy required to disassemble a whole planet is 10^32 joules. There wasn't a prefix for that when the game was written (before 1991); it would be 100 quettajoules.
For perspective, Tsar Bomba released 243 petajoules: 2.43 x 10^17 J.
The mass equivalent of 10^32 joules - thanks Einstein - is 1.111 x 10^15 kg.
I don't think anyone is schlepping, what, 5 x 10^11 metric tonnes of antimatter from planet to planet.

...of course this is a universe with tachyons and wormholes, so maybe that's the way out.

168 I didn't read the BBC bourbon article (because BBC), so did they mention the explosion of boutique distilleries that have opened around the country? Distilleries are as common as brewpubs these days; every medium size city or resort town has at least one. That has to cut into the traditional bourbon producers market share. My whiskey purchases recently have been Wyoming Whiskey , 2 bottles, and a huge jug of Kirkland Irish whiskey from Costco. Matter of fact, I can't even recall what or when was the last time I bought Kentucky bourbon.

How long would it take to drive around a million acres?
==============
If my calculator is working correctly, that's a plot of land about 40 miles x 40 miles square. So assuming a speed of 40 mph, about four hours.

...but I was told there would be no math.

237 Interesting timing, starting a few days ago Russian DRG (basically small recon/sabotage groups) found a seam in Uke defenses in a key area and penetrated pretty far, threatening or already cutting a key road to one of the few significant big towns in the east, Kramatorsk. Meanwhile they are closing in on the other major town, Pokrovsk.

Not sure if this salient will last or be much developed before Friday, but it's an appropriate table-setter for the summit, as it reflects the trend - gradual but usually inexorable Russian advances, increasing Uke manpower problem.

Given Trump's deal-making approach and the overall circumstances, it won't be shocking if Anchorage produces a bargain framework extending beyond the Ukraine unpleasantness.

This is interesting, and I didn't know that as Johnny Carson used to say. Before the 1833 storm, astronomers didn't pay much attention to meteors, thinking they were just uninteresting transients. The rate of that 1833 storm was high enough that the radiant point was obvious to anyone looking, and that got them to thinking. And that was one of the significant astronomical findings of the 19th Century.

275 168 I didn't read the BBC bourbon article (because BBC), so did they mention the explosion of boutique distilleries that have opened around the country? Distilleries are as common as brewpubs these days; every medium size city or resort town has at least one. That has to cut into the traditional bourbon producers market share. My whiskey purchases recently have been Wyoming Whiskey , 2 bottles, and a huge jug of Kirkland Irish whiskey from Costco. Matter of fact, I can't even recall what or when was the last time I bought Kentucky bourbon.

Every driven through falling snow? You'll see the same "radiant" effect. Across the windshield it looks like the snowflake streaks are coming from a point in your direction of travel.

Now, if the snow had significant velocity itself relative to the ground (as you do), that direction would be a vector sum of the car's velocity and the snow velocity.

That is the radiant effect of a meteor shower when the earth is slamming into the debris stream of comets and asteroids. It's mostly comets, but a few streams come from asteroids.

The possible Younger Dryas "shotgun" blast was likely a large debris stream of what we call the Taurids now. The Taurids and Comet Encke are likely what's left of a much bigger comet.

Imagine the debris stream of an object like that. As it goes around the sun, it leaves a trail of debris, a long tail that gets a bit perturbed by the solar wind and stuff, and makes a little string of debris following that elliptical trajectory.

It crosses the earth's orbital path. When the earth slams into it, you get the meteor shower. Now, think of which direction that will be in the sky, relative to what time of day it is.

Imagine the circle of the earth's orbit. Now, think of where you're facing looking up at noon, midnight, dawn and dusk.

What would be the ideal time to be looking right overhead in the direction of earth's velocity around the sun?

294 Well, my Suburban transmission is fully assembled, and I was able, barely, to lift it off the worktable, and place on a barrel sitting on my little hydraulic platform cart. I secured it and the barrel to the cart with a ratchet strap, and slowly trundled the cart from the garage to the big shop, and up the ramp. Those little wheels don't like rolling on grass and sorta-soft earth, but roll they did.

I raised the '99 Suburban up on the hoist, and got to work making it ready to install the transmission. Right hand exhaust pipe is bolted up, getting it out of the way. Wasted a lot of time trying to find the metric nuts for the through bolts on the front motor mounts, when it finally came to me: they are 7/16 NC, not metric. Finally got those drawn up tight. Next steps: tuck the wire harnesses up into a safe place so the transmission can be manhandled without them getting caught in between, and fit the torque converter to the transmission, and raise it up into place.

I have a good amount of friends in that area. The architecture is way nicer than NYC, and one thing I noticed was no frigging steam rising out of the sidewalks. The underground parking is pretty cool. You're just driving along and decide to aim for the big hole/ramp in the middle of the road and park the car. friends of mine from out there would take me into the city for drinks and it was pretty cool. I always had way more fun there than NYC. Its very different.

Donald Trump delayed deploying the National Guard on January 6th when our Capitol was under violent attack and lives were at stake.

Now, he’s activating the DC Guard to distract from his incompetent mishandling of tariffs, health care, education and immigration — just to name a few blunders.
--

Chief Steven Sund@ChiefSund

Ma’am, it is long past time to be honest with the American people. On January 3, I requested National Guard assistance, but your Sergeant at Arms denied it.

Under federal law (2 U.S.C. §1970), I was prohibited from calling them in without specific approval. That same day, Carol Corbin at the Pentagon offered National Guard support, but I was forced to decline because I lacked the legal authority.

On January 6, while the Capitol was under attack and despite my repeated calls, your Sergeant at Arms again denied my urgent requests for over 70 agonizing minutes, “running it up the chain” for your approval.

When I needed assistance, it was denied. Yet when it suited you, you ordered fencing topped with concertina wire and surrounded the Capitol with thousands of armed National Guard troops.

Thanks to Mike, I got interested in the DC NG. It goes back to Thomas Jefferson, who first created it. It was originally a federal militia. The regular army, such as we think of it today, didn't really exist, and what did was on the frontiers.

Jefferson was worried about a military coup. Not by the federal army, but by a strong state militia. Remember the Federalist vs Democrat-Republican thing. The commanding generals of the two closest militia units were Federalists. And thus the Militia of the District of Columbia was created.

I got interested in the legal/theoretical construct that is D.C. It's not a state or part of any state, and is under direct federal control. Thus, it is the federal govt that is the governor/mayor and legislature for D.C in creating and enforcing what would otherwise be state and local laws. Home Rule delegate all that to the fucked up mess that D.C local govt. became.

I got interested in the history. The "Organic Act" of 1801 essentially set Maryland common law as common law in the district. There's your local laws under the authority of Congress. Things were change since then, two big times before Home Rule.

But essentially the President remains the ultimate "governor/mayor" of D.C in terms of what would otherwise be state and local matters.

POTUS can take over the D.C police for 48 years without notifying Congress. This can extend to 30 days with notification to Congress. After that, Congress must act on the question.

Local govt in D.C. is something I wasn't familiar with and now I'm readin' up on it. POTUS appointed "Judge Jugs", Jeanine Pirro as US Attorney for the District of Columbia. This office acts as a traditional federal law US attorney in D.C., but also like a local DA for D.C. for major crimes. Misdemeanors and traffic shit are handled by some local elected official under Home Rule somehow.

The court system is essentially federal but a local like thing, which I'm trying to get up to speed on.

We get used to it. For some reason, we are making two trips the Lower 48 this year, once to WI to visit DH's mom, and one to Corsicana. The one thing we never do is leave Alaska in the summer. Summers are why we live here.

I would think one would choose to leave Oahu in the summer, for mostly the same reasons.

Posted by: tcn in AK at August 12, 2025 02:08 AM (fDshd)

378 Oahu is tiny. After 6 months, you've seen it all. The seasons don't really change. Ever. It's overrated and expensive. The locals hate wypipo, especially military.
Palm trees, beaches, fancy fruit and fat people. Factor in a few island hops, and you add volcanoes and waterfalls. Go snorkeling, watch the whales. Meh.

It's great for about a month, maybe 2, then it all looks the same.

I'm sure Alaska offers a whole lot more!

One year out in sturgis we ran into a couple dudes that road in from Alaska. They said it was 3800 miles, took them 9 days, and had to get new tires along the way. Those guys were true believers.

381 Jeepers, tcn, I wish that we could split the cost of the rental!!!

Two years ago it took me a looong time to get my rental car in Texas. All of the other rental counters were closed and all renters were placed in one interminable line. Last year was a breeze though. I really need to do the laser surgery on my eyes for better vision, I would be much more amenable to a road trip then. Used to absolutely love road trips, I did a ton of them myself when hubs was sick and kids still needed drop offs and pick ups at college.

yeah, not for the faint of heart. I was never a long distance rider. Most of my bikes are either medium range or bar hoppers. The medium range ones could do longer distance with a few changes, like more cushy seats and maybe add a windshield. It would kill the look of them, but it would be function over form, and easy to change back. I do have one bike that is actually a dedicated long distance tour bike, but its a frigging tank. 780 pounds by itself. Mrs b almost toppled us a few times trying to climb on, and then I can barely lift it off the kick stand with her on it. Once you're driving its a couch. 3800 miles though, yeah not sure I would ever do that. I could see touring the country, but I would want a month to do it and enough money for hotels, because if its raining I'm staying in the hotel.

I would offer you a ride, since my plan is to drive to my place in Apache Junction, pick up some "stuff", and then proceed to Corsicana. Might stay in AJ for a day or two, though. And would have to return by the same route.

My usual route to AJ is straight down I-15 through Idaho and Utah to Las Vegas, then Hwy. 93 to Kingman, Wickenburg, and PHX.

396 I think I've got the gist of the D.C. "local like" court system down pat. Before Home Rule was passed, all state/local like crimes were prosecuted in the US District Court for DC, and appeals went to the D.C Circuit.

Home Rule act created a separate state like court system for DC, the Superior Court of D.C, and the DC Court of Appeals. This latter is easily confused with the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. But they are two distinct things.

The DC Court of Appeals acts like a state supreme court for "local like" criminal and civil matters in D.C. You could technically appeal to the US Supreme Court, but it very rarely hears any such appeals.

The confusing thing is the US Attorney still has the dual role to some extent, at least with felony level crimes in DC.

And now I understand why POTUS wanted Judge Jugs in there. She's the local DA for DC in this capacity. Also, a traditional US Attorney, but the main thing is her DC DA like power.

By taking over the police, sending in the DC Guard, and Judge Jugs as the DA-like US attorney, Trump is well on the way to cracking down on D.C crime.
