21 I was never on AOL. When email started up, I used my account at work, and the same for the nascent Internet. Yahoo! was my first non-work email address. I still have a Yahoo! email, but haven't looked at it in a couple of years.

Anyway! I be up, awake (depending on how you define that), sipping coffee, and absurdly flattered that little Dagny the Aloof Kitten* slept on the bed with me not only yesterday afternoon but also last night. Trying to find the motivation to go walk after a while. That motivation has got to be around here somewhere, I just saw it yesterday. Maybe behind the couch.

* Kitten? Not really. She's three years old now. But she still seems kittenish in size and playfulness.

22 Sheena is how Sinead is supposed to be pronounced in Irish, but no one bothers.

Kind of like how Colleen is how Caitlin is supposed to be pronounced.

Imagine coming up with a spelling system for your language that's so weird that when you say "this is how it's spelled", the rest of the world says "LOL, sure buddy, but also no that's dumb. We're still taking your names though."

23 Good time of day everyone. I hope you're feeling batter Pixy!

I don't want to curse Canada's amazing technological future, but after discovering there is a 3:52 am and deciding to get up and finish the last bit of house organizing, I made an AMAZING DISCOVERY at the back of one drawer.

A BOX OF 200 PLASTIC STRAWS!!

I like plastic straws for hot drinks, especially cacao and hot chocolate and I can't buy the damn things anymore. If you can't get straws and light bulbs right, there are probably better places for people to set up their high tech businesses.

That brings me up to about 640 plastic straws.

I counted when I put these in my plastic straw and take out menu drawer.

I'm organizing.....

Happy Day Everyone!

40 Rant about a relatively inconsequential tech related thing.

So Youtube has a feature where it'll, theoretically, show what percentage of a particular video you've watched. Only sometimes it says you're 20% into something you've never seen before, sometimes it says you only watched 60% of something you've watched all the way through, and sometimes it says you've watched an entire video even if you've skipped through it and only watched about 10%.

Further, even if you remove the video from your watch history, whatever percentage it says that you watched will be the only percentage it reports even if you watch it again.

Not that it matters since YT will continue to recommend videos you've already watched no matter how many times you tell it to not do that.

43 The other night we watched a 1944 flick, Christmas Holiday, on YooToob. An interesting drama, not a sappy Xmas story at all, with Deanna Durbin as a nightclub "hostess" (read: prostitute) and -- get this -- Gene Kelly as a charming and unrepentant sociopath who commits a murder. If you only know Kelly from his singing and dancing, you will be astonished at how good a dramatic actor he could be. The story is set in New Orleans, and they made a decent effort to make it look right.

Anyway, usually when we watch a YooToob video on the TV, YT inserts ads that you have to watch at least fifteen seconds of before skipping ahead. Not this time; the film was presented without interruption. Amazin'.

44 Incredibly beautiful morning. Clear sky. Huge moon. Venus and Jupiter very bright in the east. Orion's belt, and the big dipper. Cicadas calling. I love August.

And speaking of dial-up modems, contrast that with another thing I just saw in the sky: one of Elon's babies flying by.

In 25 years we've gone from 28.8 K through your phone line to high speed Internet anywhere on the planet with a clear view of the sky.

A paragraph from the Hoover, AL and Cedar Rapids, IA article for NPR simply drips condescension:

We've also been listening to Americans directly. For the first time, we are now conducting qualitative audience research with audiences without prior pre-screening for educational attainment – in other words, we're asking people of all educations levels, especially those without college degrees, what they want out of public radio. We've been speaking with communities in places like Hoover, Alabama, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa to listen to what they want and need from public media, and hearing some informative, and often moving, perspectives.

All it lacked was a closing sentence in which they assured their loyal audience that they had showered and been deloused afterward.
