Personal story:

I once took photos of a lion (perhaps a juvenile - its mane was not as dark or majestic as the one on the lion above - in a hotel room, with his trainer. The lion's mane had a waxy feel. He had come up the fire escape of the hotel for photos.

The next night, he bit one of my friends in a college show. He had been okay in rehearsal, but reacted badly to the wig she wore for the final production.

He left her with part of her scalp peeled back, but it was repaired. She still has lion tooth marks on her forehead. Lions are wild animals.

This is Kroger. We had to buy a new dog bed from Chewy. As you can see it was a big hit. He pretty much planted himself there for the rest of the evening with his bear.

Good Day K.T. and Fellow Pet Morons,
We had a big event at the house a few days ago, Chicks A & B took their first flight. This is a major milestone and has triggered changes in their living arrangements and feeding.
They have been moved into a proper bird cage now so they can learn how to balance and perch. We've also begun the weaning process to slowly get them off of the formula and on to a normal diet. We are using RowdyBush Crumble as a starter food and they are eating it, but we will continue to offer them formula twice a day. I expect in a few days to a week they will start refusing the formula all together.
Chicks C & D are both doing well and starting to flap their wings, but they don't have all their flight feathers yet, so their first flight is at least a week or more away.
Today pictures are of A & B. I don't know if you can see, but their plumage is just so pristine at this point. One image has A getting ready to launch himself for a fly about, and there is one of them looking at us. The last picture is from a previous post of these same 2 babies about 8 weeks ago. Nature never ceases to amaze me.

I just saw a most unusual sight.
I found a deer resting in the shade in my backyard.
I live in a semi-rural community and my house is only a few blocks from several patches of woods that are home to deer. It's not too unusual to see them roaming my neighborhood at night.
I've lived here for 13 years and this is the first time I've seen a deer chilling out in my backyard on a hot summer day. Pretty cool.

6 I have two Maine Coon cats, they've been on the Pet Thread--Sangria and Rooney. Sangria is a 3 year old female, black and gray. She weighs around 19 pounds. Rooney is an orange male, he's two and over 20 pounds. That video is pretty much right! I actually haven't measured them from nose to tip but I'm pretty sure they're both over 3 feet, with Rooney being bigger. We're having arguments with them over grooming, though. They love their stomachs rubbed but disappear if i come near their underside with any grooming tool.

7 Here at the NaCly Deer Bed and Breakfast, besides the deer we have a flock of turkeys. Two very alert hens, and the 12 survivors of hatching this year.

Fawns and young dear now, full antlered males later in the year. Max at one time was a group of four passing through. With big racks.

8 Once in a while, deer will get spooked by reflections in glass and come crashing through sliding doors or other entryway into your home. Naturally, they aren’t able to simply exit the way they entered, becoming highly agitated in the process, and can be quite dangerous, tearing up everything in their panic.

9 Hey all,

I'm currently home treating my cat after a big health scare.

I took him to the ER on Sunday and it turned out he had a chest infection. They admitted him to do chest tubes and give antibiotics.

He came home Thursday night and I'm supposed to be giving him antibiotics 2x a day because he has lingering pneumonia and we are still waiting on the blood culture results.

He has been an absolute nightmare to give medication to. He won't eat food if I mix it in. I've tried various methods of pilling him but I am just facing the fact that I will have to get scratched up twice a day.

The good news is he is starting to act like his normal self again and his appetite is back.

I just really wish I didn't have to keep giving him these pills.

10 Afternoon, Pet Folken!

My update on my furry thugs is that both Stirling the huge black (though he's no Maine Coon) and little Dagny the gray torbie Siberian slept on the bed with me this afternoon. And Dagny, ever since last Sunday, has slept with me each night and each afternoon for my nap. This is peculiar, as she's always been a little aloof or more than aloof. Doe she sense something I should know about?

12 NR Pax--

Funny story about a bed that looks like Kroger's bed. I bought on sale it for our dog, Luna, but she only occasionally used it. After we donated her old beds to a rescue we put the unused bed in the car that we use most for her outings.

It is now her Favorite Place in the Entire World!! She jumps into the car and then immediately settles into that bed. It's a total 180 on how she felt about that bed when it was in the house.

Dogs aren't as weird as cats...but they're still weird.

14 Might not help but I had a nightmare cat like that, fortunately on the small side. I wrapped him in a towel up to his neck and held him between my knees. I could get the pill in his mouth that way, and stroke his throat to get it down. It was exciting when I unwrapped him but it did at least get the pill down.

15 My late red tabby-with-white, Arizona, was not as huge as today's Maine Coons, and he did not have the tip-of-the-ear tufts that look like little paintbrushes. And he was nowhere near as laid back as they are. But I have a book, That Yankee Cat, about the breed, published in the mid-'80s, with pictures. MCs then did not have quite the wild look they do now, and the ear tips were rarer. AZ did look more like those Coons.

He was found by the SPCA on a Thursday, and I adopted him on the following Saturday. The chances of a purebred Maine Coon kitten somehow getting lost from the home of somebody who could afford a purebred cat back then, and his owner not looking for him in the intervening two days, are vanishingly small. He was probably not a Coon or a Coon mix. Didn't matter; he was my buddy. End of story.

18 Our neighbors cat, King Tut, could probably give the filthy ape a good run. The cat is as big as a medium sized dog and is svelte and muscular. He would smack it around a little bit and jump up on a building or something to get away.

19 It's noteworthy when there AREN'T deer in our yard. Our dog mostly just looks at them and seems to say "meh." Except when she's really bored and then she'll charge after them if we walk out in the yard when they are present as if to say: "See, I'm on the job!! I'm clearing the invaders."

20 It was hot yesterday. Mr Trouble figured out the advantages of heat during the winter, but it took him this year to learn about AC. He had a siesta on the couch, fell asleep sitting leaned back against a pillow.

Also, it seems like I am now feeding a mama possum. Looks like she is carrying babies. She kept getting spooked and would run under the house.

One method I've tried that seems to work is to grind up the pill into a fine powder. Mix it with about 1CC of water and then you can suck it up with a syringe (your vet can give you one) and administer the pill like it was a liquid medication, squirting it down the back of the cat's throat. I've done it for my cat Kaylee many times.

26 Not exactly "pets" but I finally caught & released my first fish of the year this morning. I've been badly overwhelmed with work and a general malaise, but I got up before dawn, threw a backpack on, rode out to a series of little ponds near me, and encountered some catfish, blue gill, and one largemouth bass. Alas - no crappie. But it was refreshing! I just need to get a dog fishing buddy!

34 Yes, dogs will celebrate with you, while cats will look at you in the same way whether you have good news or bad. The flip side of that is that they think the same of you (and I choose to believe there's affection in there) whether you have lost your job or gotten a new one, have lost a lover or have met a new one, whether you're going to be evicted from your apartment or you've bought a house.

36 MegaRoy, is a Maine Coon. He's on the smaller side and could be a cross between Maine Coon and a Norwegian Forrest kitty. 16 pounds, and he's kinda got a dad bod chunky boy gut. He could lose maybe 1 pound or two. Loooonnnngggg tail like the kitty in the video. He is doggish, follows Smash around and wants to be part of everything she does. Not a cuddler though unless he's cold.

38 Greetings, everyone. As I am typing this out, Kroger is subtly hinting that it is dinner time and perhaps I should start doing meal prep. I have reminded him that he has another ten minutes to go.

And right now, we are babysitting three other Greyhounds in addition to our two while my wife is away for the weekend. It is going to be fun trying to juggle multiple bowls and dietary needs.

44 I really need to remember to send in pics of my deranged hounds, and silly cats. And the cows, who are essentially big, lumbering pets. The rest of the Rancho Brewingfrog menagerie are critters of the "wild" variety, with about a dozen deer at the feeder each evening (the mama deer are just now letting their fawns tag along), three separate herds/flocks of turkeys (including turklets- Little Baby Turkeys), 4 Whistling Ducks, two Cara Cara Eagles, Mr. Kitty (male Bobcat), at least two sounders of feral hogs (slowly being picked off), plenty of coyotes, a wolf or two, and the occasional Cougar.

It is a busy place...

45 Just got in from lake. Shih Tzu pup declined 'toon ride due to temps hovering around 100. She did go with me to gas this morning when it was 75. Think she's starting to get some sea legs, just not when it's plus 90.

61 My dog barks at jets, but only if they’re leaving a contrail. He started that about a year and a half ago. When we leave the house to go for a walk, he scans the skies for enemy aircraft. People can’t believe it when I assure them he isn’t barking at them or their dog, but I just point to the sky. I’m not bragging, but I will point out that he has successfully chased off every jet that he’s encountered. Not one has ever turned back or altered course.
