14 One thing that amuses me about western art - you can see this fairly constant improvement in the ability to paint from the middle ages up until say the 1600/1700s then the improvement dramatically slows down, until we develop modern art and it then it starts declining.

If I saw this painting was made in 1300 I would likely consider it good but by the standards of say 1700 it sucks.

You need the bar cover band to make the greats... great. In a vacuum Caravaggio or Michelangelo would still be great, but if everyone was that good, well...

It is one reason I think people do not have a proper appreciation for good representational art (and also think they can do that easily.) They look back on 2000 years of painting and see the true greats (those whose works were remarked and preserved.) They do not see Malachai Svebodha from Milan in 1168 who was struggling, being called a failure by his dad and who really did not suck, but he was the Green Day of art. Not one of the true greats, just sort of ok.

You missed my point in that I appreciate originality and recognizability of an artist even though I might not like the actual work.

Those that are just copying the style of the flavor of the day are just another one of the million of artists there are in the world even if they are technically good. I think coming up with a recognizable style is most artist’s goal.

It's kind of sad.

So, they are walking.

They say that the dog saved their lives, but really the dog just occupied and distracted the cat.

The owner even says he chased them for a minute, but realized he'd be next and so he stopped.

This is not even a heartwarming story where the dog fought off an alligator but died of his wounds. The dog was just a snack while the owners ran and wished him well.

Wtf. WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU PUBLICIZE THIS?! I get it if the story is you standing there with a shotgun saying 'I and going to find that son of a bitch and avenge fluffy!' (combined with racking the shotgun.)

Youth is fleeting. She'd better get on the market while she still has that.

On the other hand, a lot of the young females we see on the 'Net complain (after dyeing their hair purple and eating themselves into Type II diabetes) that the men they want don't want them. They consider they're on the market. They just haven't analyzed correctly what the market wants, and insist that the market change for them.

This summer I've observed that the "feels like" heat index reported in my weather app is far more realistic than it was the previous summers. This year the heat index will add 3-5 degrees on a hot day, but in previous summers it would add 15-20 degrees. I guess the heat index was being funded by USAID and they had to scale back.

As usual with CBD's selections, the painting is dull and monotonous, hardly worth commenting on.

Loren Coleman in his book, Mysterious America has many stories of alligators in sewers and other locales. They are known as Out of Place animals. There's also a plague of kangaroo sightings in the Midwest and giant Thunderbirds, phantom Big Cats, those weird clown sightings, the infamous Dover Demon and the legendary Bridgewater Triangle.

131 Two young women sharing a flat to save on expenses: perhaps sisters. The one seated on the floor, tailor-fashion, is doing some mending. The one at the mirror is arranging or perhaps using some toilette items. They appear relaxed around each other. The light and the title suggest early evening and a return to the apartment from a busy day. There is a lot of attention to the details of the drapes and the rug. The window is open to let in a cooling breeze. Both women have fashionable bob cuts. The fact that the window is open suggests an upper floor apartment. It is 1927 in Brazil.

178 128 I actually witnessed this happen IRL.

we had a neighbor diagonal across the street who kept a big white dog in a pen. It looked like a GSD except white, and bigger.
The dog's name was Sarge. Well one day Sarge got out and killed little doggeh that belonged to neighbor lady 3 doors
down from us. Her boyfriend had to restrain her from shooting Sarge.

and the little dog Sarge killed really was fluffy too

Probably a White Shepherd, then.

Used to be considered the same breed as a GSD, but were eventually classified as their own breed (and there are two different breeds of them now) later on.

Freedos might work for that. That being said, Win 98 SE is probably the best for old DOS games combined with a semi normal GUI interface. Main problem with Win95/98 though is registry corruption. Win2K runs better but not great for the DOS gaming experience.

I keep a copies of FreeDos, Dr DOS, Knoppix, and old Debian/Ubuntu live disks. Clonezilla and GParted also. They boot and work when Windows 98/95 doesn't. Same reason I kept MS-DOS diskettes for versions starting with 6.

If you really want to go retro, there are quite a few old computer boxes and/or parts for a build to go back to the early 90's. Something like a DX2-50 etc.

But watch out for old memory and motherboard combos on ebay as even some of the new in box memory can be corrupted. Had a problem with some Kingston memory that way--so run a rigorous memtest, etc before installing an operating system.

I never liked the vibe at LGF in the first place because I hate sycophants and hipsters which LGF had too many of.

I spent a lot more time at The Firing Line, etc. because I was involved in 2A advocacy at the state level on concealed carry at the time.

My thing about the like button or the ability to have threaded conversations.

The current system means you cannot really 'skip' or sole focus any conversation. So it means you are still in the same pool with every other conversation. That to me is a good thing.

Two, the like thing, while it may sound great, it would make people... odd. Or more like people. People would chase those likes. Get pissed off if they did not get likes for a comment they thought was great. We already get the social dynamic of people getting upset when they put forth a question or an opinion and no one responds.

251 Hitler really admired Ford for being able to bring a car to the masses so he wanted to duplicate it with the VW.

So all you Ford driving people are just Hitler fans.

263 Speaking of "Final Destination"...

We saw "Final Destination 5: Bloodlines" last night. Streaming on HBOMax.

If you're unfamiliar with the FD series, the basic premise is that if you somehow escape the death that you slated to have by the fates, Death will come after you until he gets you with some ornate, grotesque Rube Goldbergian death trap, Death being the prankster he is and all.

I have to say that FD5 was surprisingly well done. Not just for an FD movie. So, I suppose it earned all the good reviews.

This is meant to be the final FD movie so it has a bit of a tie-in to the previous flicks.

Anyway, not a great movie. More like Grand Guinol-style entertainment. Well-directed. Well acted. Spectacular death scenes that will probably make you cringe delivered with a soupçon of philosophy.

If it sounds like your kind of thing, it is.

Check it out.

AOS reminds me of a gigantic party in a gym where the punch was spiked where you have multiple conversations occurring within earshot by a variety of people--some are familiar, others are not.

269 For the first few years of my teaching career at the university, the computer system was a VAX. I started with a teletype connection at high school to the local college’s PDP-10. Then undergrad was an Amdahl using EBCDIC and punch cards. Grad school was better with Unix systems and software. A VAX was no big deal, just another system. Not even sure what the hardware at the university is now that I am in retirement.

273 It amuses me that all the usual Trump haters are clucking about the appeals court appearing skeptical of the President's tariff power.

"Brawk! The President can't just declare an emergency and do what he wants! Brawk! Brawk!"

Oh, like under Covid?
Where none of you "legal experts" said a damned word, let alone litigated the illegal orders?

They are going to be shocked when this hits SCOTUS--of the "nah, the Prez declared Covid an emergency, not much we can do now" fame.

I'm also going to like the part of the ruling that say, "if
Congress grants the Prez broad powers, it's on Congress to restrain him, not the courts."

got the VAX i designed hanging on the wall of my cubicle. built around a prototype of the rtVAX-400. sadly, i found a nasty bug in one of the gate arrays (*not* field-programmable), and DEC decided to cancel the rtVAX-400 instead of fixing the gate array.
