I am actually amazed that this blog has soldiered on while most blogs from the age of blogs before Fakebook became popular are now long gone. The reason is that cobbers and Ace have put in the effort over the years and thus this place has created deep roots. Frank Stanley Herring (1894-1966)
From hickoryart.org: Frank Stanley Herring was born in Pennsylvania, and established himself as a painter in New York City after having studied art in Chicago...in the early 1920’s, Herring began teaching at the Grand School of Art in NYC in the winters while spending summers in North Carolina. In 1946 Herring and his wife helped establish the Burnsville Painting Classes. Located in the old Mount Mitchell's Boys camp in Burnsville, N.C., the school grew to national recognition over a 20 year period, continuing until 1966 when Herring died. Herring became known primarily for his water color portraits of blacks in the South. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at August 13, 2025 09:57 AM (9vYpt) 78

He's clearly a hard-working family man, relaxing in his favorite plaice on the front stoop of his crappie New Orleans shotgun shack after a long day at the local fishmonger's, a job that he does just for the halibut. Besides salmon had to do it. His face reflects his satisfaction of a job well done, flinging filets. His sole is at peace. His wife is preparing a big pot of seafood gumbo. Au contraire. Notice the apron.
He flounder hard at work in the kitchen when he got home. He doesn't notice that the neighbor kids are teasing him about the fish smell, because he is actually a bit hard of herring. NYT Headline: NYC Companies Just About Stopped Hiring in 2025
Awww that’s so sad! There were only 950 net new jobs created in the city in the first half of the year. Which is insane given the population of the city. It’s almost as if employers are hesitant to expand their business when a communist is poised to take over as mayor. Or when the city’s crime rate is out of control and it’s unsafe to be in public areas. Or when a new toll was implemented to charge $15 to anyone driving into Manhattan. Wait no none of that can’t be the cause. That’s just right wing lies. Gotta be Trump’s fault. Yeah that’s it, let’s blame Trump. That’s what the entire article is. Tariffs are causing businesses in NY to not hire. Ok NYT you guys go with that. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at August 13, 2025 10:08 AM (zBBwI) 123

What's in there that would offend anybody? Looking over his work, I assume he was painting from life, what he actually saw in front of him. It's not demeaning racist caricatures. Posted by: Static In gp's Attic at August 13, 2025 10:01 AM (iBAge) Would not offend anybody rational, but woke is a different critter. You try to sell used Gucci, LV bling on eBay, right away you find out that the bling is resellable ONLY if provenance back to an authorized dealer can be proved. If it cannot be, the item ceases to be 'genuine,' even if it really is. And usually you can't prove it.
All the 'value' in these bling goods is the intangible 'value' of the brand. The manufacturers don't get the money; it all goes to the IP brand owners, and their rights are seriously enforced here in the USA by the fed govt. Posted by: Static In gp's Attic at August 13, 2025 10:26 AM (iBAge) 194

In case you are wondering why the TX state house Dems are going to come back.
Suppose you're thinking, "deep pocket libs will cover their room and board, right?" Nope. 1) As we've seen, the laws have changed. Out-of-state room and board in furtherance of denying quorum is not a campaign expense and anyone paying it for them is now making a bribe. 2) TX does not pay its house members much. It's $7200 a year. All of them have to have regular jobs (or retirement). Either they own the business or are excused for ledg session. Basically, that money covers their apartment in Austin they rent for the session. They have no extra money to fund this vacation. And Chicago and NY are not cheap places to stay in hotels. They're broke are forced to come crawling back. Principles are easy when someone else is paying. LOLGF Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at August 13, 2025 10:31 AM (Xoc7P) 212

An Israeli airstrike killed five terrorists, who were armed and posing as part of World Central Kitchen, in Gaza last week, the Israel Defense Forces said on Tuesday.
The IDF published aerial footage of what it said were terrorists operating in and around a vehicle marked with with the WCK emblem in the Deir al-Balah area. The Israeli military said that the five were not affiliated with the aid organization and posed a threat to Israeli troops. “The terrorists deliberately affixed the emblem and wore yellow vests in an attempt to conceal their activity and avoid being targeted, cynically exploiting the status and trust afforded to aid organizations,” the IDF said. Representatives from the Gaza district coordination and liaison office at the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories said that World Central Kitchen, founded by celebrity Washington chef José Andrés, confirmed that the vehicle in question had no ties to the nonprofit. ==== Dear Jose Andres; Fvck you, you useful idiot and joo-hater. I wish it was possible to find some of Lenore Cady watercolors. She combined watercolor painting with beautiful calligraphy. Her last word was a patriotic piece. Red, white, and blue with the calligraphy words "freedom the most expensive treasure" written across it. She did some wonderful paintings of old Victorian houses in northern California.
