Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - August 6, 2025 [TRex]

241124-ClosingSquirrel2.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

[Top photo: Pimp Squirrel]

***

In case you missed it, Perfessor Squirrel let us know on Sunday that he is stepping down from hosting the prestigious, internationally acclaimed, stately, and illustrious Sunday Morning Book Thread. In case there was any doubt, the comments showed what a good steward he has been.

The last Book Thread by Oregon Muse was December 26, 2021. Weasel-san filled in for the first edition of 2022 before All Hail Eris filled in.

On February 20, 2022, Perfessor Squirrel stepped across the virtual threshold from being a regular commenter to being a regular contributor. He stepped onto the Ace of Spades stage and introduced himself:

The Sunday Morning Book Thread is what first convinced me to become a regular commenter here at AoSHQ. I started out on the Book Thread and then joined in commenting on other threads. OregonMuse started posting pictures of other Moron libraries, so I sent him a picture of my own, just on the off chance that it would be featured someday. I was absolutely blown away when I saw it on the Sunday Morning Book Thread.

Perfessor stepped into big shoes. He honored Book Thread traditions and added his own touches. He put a lot into the prep and writing and themes each week. He didn't just write the Book Thread but he lived it.

I bought a dozen books this week. They're all over a thousand pages each so I was only able to get through half of them (mostly because I was finishing up the dozen I bought the week before). But here's insight and commentary that ties them all together and unconsciously proves that I remember what I read and am able to relate it to things I read years ago. By the way, what are you reading?

Maybe not a direct quote, but directionally faithful...

He treated commenters with respect, even when their reading preferences were wildly different than his personal preferences. He maintained and cultivated a community of Morons. He wore a purple pimp hat. The Horde is better for his wisdom and labors.

This is not a funeral. He remains among the living, so I have the privilege to say, "On behalf of the Horde, thank you Perfessor." We look forward to continuing to cross paths in the comments. You are always welcome to make guest appearances as an alumni contributor (at least for the Hobby Thread and Wednesday ONT). Best wishes in your world beyond Ace of Spades. These pants are for you.

PS. I still have no idea how MisHum managed eight years doing ONTs five nights a week. Ironman. Still among the living as well. Maybe what doesn't kill you makes you stronger?

TRex knows what you're thinking. "Old school Batman is great, but I'm more sympathetic to the Michael Keaton type of Batman. Wouldn't it be cool to have a modern Batmobile? You know, the one that looks like a more modern high tech batmobile?"

The ONT has you covered. A street legal replica is going up for sale at an auction on September 21. No reserve!

Apparently disappearing is a thing in Japan: Disappearing to Start a New Life - The Phenomenon of Jōhatsu

Every year, nearly 100,000 Japanese people voluntarily disappear to get rid of their past and start anew. Men, women, entire families try to start a new life under another identity, as stowaways. This phenomenon, which we call "evaporation," or jouhatsu.

A story goes like this: a man named Norihiro is fired and loses his job as an engineer but, covered with shame, prefers not to tell his family. Every morning, he puts on his shirt and tie, kisses his wife goodbye and heads to his office. With no place to go, he spends the day in his car, sometimes staying late to appear as if he is drinking with his co-workers.

The days pass, he no longer receives any salary. He can no longer continue to lie to those close to him, and rather than face this terrible situation, he resolves to disappear without a trace. Norihiro is a jouhatsu, one of the many evaporated people who choose to let go of their past out of a feeling of shame or dishonor.

Most individuals disappear without any real preparation. Many are men who leave their wives and children behind without warning, claiming that everything is going well before disappearing without a trace. Others prepare more and call on "moving" companies that offer logistical assistance to the jouhatsu, going so far as to temporarily house them in secret locations.

Every year, hundreds of people use their services, paying substantial sums of money, sometimes to flee with their entire family. If the number of disappearances is increasing, it is also because the right to disappear is respected. Japanese legislation considers that individuals are officially "absent" after seven years of disappearance: their marriage is dissolved, their inheritance opened.

Anyone familiar with this?

I respect this manifestation of petty.

Dealership Repos Customer's Car, She Responds by Taking Dealership's Name

After a Kia dealership repossessed a customer's car, she found a legal loophole that let her take the dealer's name, according to Court News Ohio. The Ohio woman had her Kia K5 repoed while she was at work despite being approved for the loan. When Tiah McCreary learned that the name "Taylor Kia of Lima" wasn't registered in Ohio, she registered it in her name and is now in a legal battle with the dealership's owners and the company that serviced her loan.

I would not call this a "legal loophole" though. There is no loophole. Even if she doesn't prevail, the process is the punishment. You go girl.

The End is Near!!

The universe may start dying in just 10 billion years, alarming new model predicts

A new paper has predicted that the universe's expected lifespan is drastically shorter than once thought -and that the cosmos will start to die in just 10 billion years.

This is only one possible theory, however, and nobody really knows when the universe will end.

Oh. Nevermind.

Every year, nearly 100,000 Japanese people voluntarily disappear to get rid of their past and start anew. Men, women, entire families try to start a new life under another identity, as stowaways. This phenomenon, which we call "evaporation," or jouhatsu.

According to the story, that's not what happened. She was approved for a loan, allowed to take the car off the lot, then the decided it didn't have enough info to make the loan, so the dealership repossessed the car a month later. No other details about the circumstances of the repossession are stated, though the story maybe implies the car was repossessed without notice. The details may matter. I'm ambivalent at present.

If she hadn't been dinged for a loan payment over the course of that month, she should have called the dealer and asked, "wazzup?"

My guess is that there is something hinky about her financial situation in general, and that's why the lender got cold feet.

Maybe should should have set her sights a little lower, and shopped for a ten year old car, for a lot less money.

I HAD A BLAST! Independently, not in Greek life. I lasted a whopping 2wks, to my father's dismay, at a well known Deep South university. I had my own room because I told him dorm life was horrible and I could not study. All I remember is the girls all going wild during rush. Discussing they went out with a, "Pike" who drove a Porche." I was bewildered, and could have pledged Tri Delta or something (my aunt). Then my weird friend left and so did I. Had 2yrs of community college prior, and just did not get the deal of Greek life.

Drove home, about 3hrs, and I hope I called my parents to warn them, but probably not. My father was dismayed and said, "You lost 20% of tuition money doing this." I said, "That's not too bad, Daddy."

I did finally finish and become a RN elsewhere. This involved moving out of state and more $$$. Surprised he did not offer a dowry to anyone. Loved my husband.

It is a wonder I lived another day.

Portuguese speakers generally understand Spanish, though it sounds dull. Spanish speakers do not understand Portuguese, and often cannot understand Portuguese accented Spanish because there are simply too many phonemes for a Spanish speaker to get his head around. Especially the variety of voiced labio-palate consonants and nasal diphthongs. Spanish is a formalized language that was developed to unite the Iberian peninsula under Castile, whereas Portuguese is a vulgate Latin that kinda 'growed' the way that English did.

Nah. I was a fake hippie in dress style. Very long hair with very little make-up. Cool clothes. This other deal did not compute.

The same year my aunt and grandmother asked if I wanted to be a debutante. I am pretty sure I did not say, "Oh, hell no!" to these Southern ladies, but I was thinking it and said, "No, thank you." Bless them.

I was not cut out for females in large numbers. At all. Somehow my parents put up with me, even during my dingbat years of horror. I loved them enough I did not mess up too badly.

The letters I sent home are hilarious.Mother saved them. One talked about "everyone having sexual tension!" I had no idea what on earth I was talking about, and heaven knows they did not read this at dinner as my youngest brother was only 5yrs old! I think I was yapping about a patient in the health clinic who was depressed over a boyfriend. I am glad she saved them.

I was completely unhinged but a good girl at the same time. The envelopes show them ripped opened by my father in a frenzy. I know he was thinking, "Oh, what fresh hell is this?"

215 Might depend on the speaker, their accent or personal quirks and pronunciation, but I've never found Portuguese to resemble Russian (pretty good background in both).

The "soft" Brazilian Portuguese might be mostly a carioca accent (Rio), which adds "shh" endings to many words. Though continental Portuguese does pronounce some consonants "harder", and trills their "r"s (at least some speakers).

But this reminds me of one of the few actual headaches I've ever suffered. It was well into a brief whirlwind int'l trip with little sleep, which probably contributed.

Our group was leaving a lusophone African country, the regime's #2 was there to see the delegation off, and a poor miserable TASS TV crew was there, no translator. Friendly guys. Problem with a turntable is all the wasted space. Even if all you do is raise and rotate the small footprint of garage floor under the car, you still have to have room to swing it. That means your parking bay has to be as wide as it is deep, with nothing impinging on it.
Locomotive roundhouses had a pivoting section of track, which coul be lined up with large number of radially-disposed bays where the locos were berthed. More efficient use of floor space.

246 Speaking of cats, I've got one sore left hand right now. It's a stray that's in the process of taking up with us. Been several weeks. Well, this afternoon I went to feed him some cat treats. The smell really excited him, and he bit the hand that fed him so eager to get his chompers on them.

Well, knowing that cat bites are little needles that inject some nasty bacteria deep under the skin, I figured I just go to urgent care -- it was too late to go to my regular doc.

Wrote me a script from Augmentin (AMox-clav). I'm glad I did. This sucker is swollen and sore like a mofo.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 07, 2025 12:12 AM (w6EFb)

247 When I think of hand injuries and possible infections, I think of my father in the late '80s. He was replacing a bearing on a grain dryer, working in some nasty rotten grain shit (it had rained and we the little bit of whatever was still in the bottom). He punctured the heel of his hand -- didn't bleed and he didn't think anything of it.

That was a Friday afternoon. By Saturday afternoon, it was getting sore. By Sunday afternoon, it was really sore, and really red. My mother told him lets go to the ER. He said, naw, not for something dinky like this, I'll just to the doc in the morning.

Well, he got there at around 9AM. It was funny. As my father told it, the doc came in, looked at his hand, and just sort of mumbled to himself, "Mmmmm-hmmmm......yep." He picked up a wall phone to the desk and told whoever it was to meet him up front....

248 It will (hopefully!) stay cool tomorrow. My truck is full of bagged mulch & I need to unload it before going to help a friend pick up her much-needed new lawnmower... Girls gotta help each other when the men get old & sick!

Ugh. Hate getting up *early* LOL.

Posted by: JQ at August 07, 2025 12:13 AM (rdVOm)

249
So, Daddy was just sitting there, and the doc walks back in. Huh?

Doc said, matter of factly, well, let's go, I'm taking you to the hospital.

Daddy was like "Wait, what! I'm not ready, I need to clean up and shave....what about the car?"

Doc said, "You're about *this close* to losing that hand if not your lower arm, now get your ass in the car with me. He ended up having a the receptionist take him, because something else came up, but he was going to drive my father to the hospital himself. He told the receptionist to shoot Daddy if protested or tried anything.

That resulted in maybe 4 days in the hospital. The infection had gotten in the tendon sheaths of his wrists. They had to open his arm up from the middle of his hand about half way up toward his elbow.

It was a mess. They were worried he was going to lose function in his hand, and had to do physical therapy for a good while.

That's what raging infection can do when it gets out of control

Pressurized, aerosol, antiseptic is the ticket. There were several to choose from in the 80s. Zee Brand, they catered to corporate, was my initiation, then a brand by Mexana but slowly they went away until the last one, Dermoplast First Aid, it must be First Aid. They have three cans that are similar but First Aid is the one.

The contained antiseptics are Benezethonium & Benzocaine. -Benzocaine is an antiseptic. Can't find it on the can but the propellant is usually butane, which is also an antiseptic.

But the nut is the pressure and the use of the spray disregarding the directions. Take that puncture & force it open then put the nozzle directly on the hole & spray, spay till the medicine 'hits the spot' (the bottom) - you'll know it went it hits.

This technique not only cleans the wound it disinfects at the same time. Works on slices, dices, paper cuts all small injuries. Bandage optional

When I used to rehab wildlife, it was known.
Cats pierce, dogs crush. If we got in a bunny or squirrel or bird that had been cat bit, it was usually a put down. Dogs were a little more unsure.

But the piercing action was either fatal, or the resulting infection would be.

273 Two observations: Japanese culture and the quirks thereof is a very good example that overcrowding leads to bizarre behavior in living creatures. There used to be studies showing that but they have been much more hidden since "the elites" decided that stuffing the peasants together was the best for "the elites". The other is that hating and blaming Jews for everything is kind of the core belief of Nazism like believing in Jesus is the core belief of Christianity. If you irrationally hate the Jews...you might be a Nazi...

278 Speaking of Dr. Demento, for some reason the other day I thought of the Pink Burrito song "For to Keep It Clean." Found it on Youtube and it turns out that the band was R. Crumb's jug band. I never connected it, but he's the cartoonist who did the "Keep On Truckin'" cartoons with the guy who you could see the sole of one foot. So that got me down an Internet rabbit trail, and it turns out someone did a documentary of his family that took about ten years, and they were (unsurprisingly) batsh*t weird. Believe it or not, it appears he's the sanest one. I am curious, and it won all kinds of awards, but I really don't want to see it.

If that's "advancing the state's interests", no thanks.
