Monday Overnight Open Thread - August 4, 2025 [Doof]

doof-rain-lightning.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! You've waited all day for it, and now it's here! The Monday night ONT is on time and on the money. What money, you ask? Not sure. Maybe there's some loose change around here somewhere. Come on in and see what you can find!

Free Pizza!

Just kidding. Kinda. Cool story about kindness.

Minnesota Pizza Shop’s Dumpster Discovery Inspires Wave Of Kindness

doof-pizza-man-dumpster-good-news.jpg

What started as a troubling discovery behind a small pizza shop in Minnesota has turned into a beautiful example of compassion and community.

On July 29, Heights Pizza Man in Columbia Heights, just north of Minneapolis, shared a heartfelt post on Facebook after realizing people had been eating out of their dumpster.

Rather than responding with frustration, Kolstad extended an open hand. He encouraged anyone in need of food to simply ask—no questions, no judgment. For those too embarrassed, he offered an alternative: leave a note, and they’d quietly set aside extra food or small cheese pizzas near the back door, away from view.

Check out the whole story, which includes a video. Sure, this type of kindness can be abused by jerks. But you gotta appreciate the heart of givers.

She's Got Legs!

No, this isn't a ZZ Top segment. Our Hordeling friend "neverenoughcaffeine" suggested we take a look at Myrtle Corbin.

doof-Myrtle_Corbin.jpg

Josephine Myrtle Corbin (May 12, 1868 – May 6, 1928 ) was an American sideshow performer born as a dipygus. This referred to the fact that she had two separate pelvises side by side from the waist down, as a result of her body axis splitting as it developed. Each of her smaller inner legs was paired with one of her outer legs. She was said to be able to move her inner legs, but they were too weak for walking.

***

She died in Cleburne, Texas, on May 6, 1928. Her casket was covered in concrete and various family members kept watch until it was fully cured. This was to prevent grave robbers from stealing her corpse. Several medical practitioners and private collectors offered financial compensation for her corpse.

Very interesting. Have any of you ever heard of her before? I had not.

Thanks to NEC for the content suggestion!

30 I don't know if any of you guys have been following this horrible "Devil's Den" story in AR. The killer, one Andrew McGann, is a schoolteacher who was shuffled from district to district on suspicion of grooming girls. Never disciplined, mind you. Just kicking the can down the road, until he tried snatching a girl from a hiking trail, and ended up butchering her parents when they rushed him protecting her.

Now, that's raising eyebrows about how these schools kept allowing him employment with his record. But the mystery to me is how he ever could have been hired in the first place. Forget about at a school. Anywhere. In every single photo of him, not just the mugshot, he looks straight up demon possessed. I wouldn't hire this guy unless the job listing was for "Psycho Killer."

But my favorite one us this one from his... dating profile! I'm guessing not too many ladies swiped right for this charmer:

I don't think so. He fell off stage in the 80s or early 90s and spent the last years of his laugh paralyzed from the waist down. But was never bitter and continued making music and being a genuinely humble, grateful man.

52 Nice story about the pizza place; the owner has a good heart. I worked at a cafeteria decades ago. We used to throw a lot of food out at the end of the night, which bothered most of us. We were told that we had to throw it away; we couldn't donate it to a food bank because it might incentivize someone to deliberately make too much food (and then maybe give it to friends or sell it or something). It makes some sense but it felt crappy at the time.

Dave Mustaine doesn't have Nancy's (yummy) legs, but Megadeth's cover of that song is a banger.

53 Navy announced newest Burke-class destroyer will be named after Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, USMC, Medal of Honor winner for truly amazing heroics in Afghanistan, protecting/saving some of his brothers.

Obviously well deserved. Some are kvetching - mildly, and no disrespect meant to Cpl. Carpenter - that naming ships after living persons is not a good approach.

My preference is for nothing named for living people, though I think this is a reasonable exception. But really think ships should be named for military heroes/figures, battles, and US place names, as has been the tradition for the most part. And I think political figures should only be rare exceptions, and with a 100-year rule. I suppose there are exceptions there too, like Carl Vinson, who was key in the Navy build-up that helped win WWII.

234 Hello, Horde! 😊❤️

Well, the news is EXCELLENT!!!!!

Saw the Oncological Surgeon today, and he said everything looks great. So much so, that he thinks after I get my next CT scan (late October - early November) that we will be talking about surgery to remove my tumors!

One of the satellite tumors is no longer there, and all of the rest of the tumors continue to shrink. The largest tumor is showing signs of calcification, which means that it is dying.

He said if it wasn't for the fact that my most recent CT Scan showed a couple of blood clots in my lungs - which apparently is quite common in cancer patients - that he would have been inclined to do surgery now. I am on a blood thinner to dissolve the clots; by the time of my next CT Scan, they should be gone.

So, as I said to Paul as we were getting on the elevator, "It's a good day, Tater!"

Thank you all for continuing to pray for me - they are definitely working! 😊❤️

AVL was a little warmer, maxed out at 70F, but they didn't set a record, because the previous was 68F, on the cooler side for 8/4. But they set two in a row the previous two days.

Got to Get Better in a Little While
Quinn Sullivan
Excerpted from 2025 Moulin Blues Festival, NL

Quinn got his start by touring during his summer school breaks with Buddy Guy. I got to one of those shows about 10 years ago. Quinn then was a guitar prodigy. Today he is a guitar master. He doesn't tour much, so if you live in the Boston / NY / NE area you will have regular opportunities to attend a show. Highly recommended. The first track I selected is a show stopper; it is a complete wow. The second is the encore and it gets the job done. The whole show is great too; all professionally shot and edited.

264 Trivia: automatic transmissions were one of the last uses for sperm whale oil. It's amazing stuff... remains effective over an astounding range of temperatures and pressures. Never hardens or gums up.

There are probably synthetics nowadays that are as good, or nearly so.

Many old watchmakers still have a small vintage container deeply hidden in the bowels of their workbenches, or so I've heard. There's still nothing like it for lubing fine watches.

Just don't get caught with it.

Technically it's still legal to own if it's from before the ban...but you'd best have documentation of tat.

269 A bit more. But, it caused me to wonder how much of this stuff is, or, is going to be, AI generated.

In a couple of weeks I'll be lockdowned reviewing five times that.
The only thing that matters is what the bidder calls "betterments". If they call it that then it governs.

I just stumbled across this X feed, which is an automated bot that posts all the NWS record even reports for the whole country:

You can see records are being broken all the time.

Georgia was setting some cool summer daily records, and I see Stuttgart, AK airport set a record low for 8/4 as well as Little Rock AFB.

I must confess I did not know that Stuttgart AK existed.

272 Arkansas is AR.

AK is Alaska (likely because Alabama already had AL).

273 Back when Billy Jeff was a new thing, the Hope, Alaska post office fielded a lot of misdirected mail intended for Hope, Arkansas, or so I seem to recall.

I vaguely remember that, too.

I actually know better, but dammit, I always think AK is Arkansas on autopilot.

276 In case anybody missed it, earlier this evening I heard that Macron & wife dropped their suit against Candace Owens. Apparently, they were just trying to bully her into a retraction, but she was having none of it.

I don't know much about Candace Owens, I'm not a fan, but not really against her either, but she was getting a lot of hate around here recently.

I'd heard what she claimed about the Macrons from elsewhere first, and wouldn't be surprised if it was right. The Globalist leaders (like Obama and Trudeau) always seem to have something especially screwed up in their background that they want secret.

If anything, this suggests that Ms Owens is right on this one.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

279 Interesting that they brought the suit instead of letting her stew in it then dropping it. Is is something in discovery they don't want exposed?

Just read that she has two children by another marriage. So, she was married before she married Macron. There's another story beside the schoolroom romance.

280 Teresa, That is most wonderful news, I am so happy for you.

Bers, I am staying at the Comfort Inn too, it will be nice to see you and Mrs. B.
I stayed at the Best Western a few times when they were giving us a deal. They were a lot more expensive this year.

Alteria Pilgrim, Quinn Sullivan is playing in Plymouth, MA. in September, I will have to look into that.

She is a bit steep on the crazy-hot matrix.

Tucker Carlson interviewed here recently about this. It is a pretty good listen.
