I know that we have people on here who say, "Why would anyone read a paper!?" I'm not sure if that's because of left wing journalism or because they don't want purchase a dead tree paper. Well, I read a . paper, because the NYP, at least, has some articles favorable to Trump and his agenda and also because they are strong supporters of Israel. Also, I like to do the word search on actual paper and I think probably too much screen time doesn't help my eyes. I don't want to read Jane Austen or the Bible online, either although I put up scripture selections from the Bible online

I watch the old movies where newspapers had a large building in the center of the city and the coming and going of reporters, informers and others and the paper put out several editions a day. Exciting days for the paper (Thinking Superman's editor) Now most existing papers are but a shadow of what was once a thriving business. Trying to beat the other newspaper in the city to sell today's news today. The newspaper in the nearby city is now printed in a far off city a 1000 miles away and I only see it in a grocery stores at the exit and its about 8 paged of mostly canned stories from last week. I wonder if the NYTimes puts out a 4 pound Sunday edition like they use to. Time marches on.

The local public schools are opening again already! They are really chipping away at summer vacation. Though now, the kids have a fall break, a spring break, and school shuts down whenever the temps drop below 35 F. or if the school A/C shuts down, so they probably have two or three weeks' worth of "breaks."

Today I bring Stirling to the vet for his rabies shot and flea treatment, and I'll get another three-month treatment for Dagny, so the two of them will start level. Linda suggested I should use some flea spray on the carpets in the car, just to be safe. The rest of the week? I was horrified by Pink Floyd’s “ The Wall” when my younger brother introduced me to Pink Floyd. That was largely because my high school population had seemingly become more rebellious and anti-academic in my brother’s era. Now, with reports’s of “woke” high school leadership, I love the song.

Posted by: Colin at August 04, 2025 *** Same here. The windows would be open, and as April slid into May you could smell the flowers and you knew summer vacation was coming at last. School was such a long slog in those days. Labor Day off, then nothing until Thanksgiving; then Christmas; two days for Mardi Gras here; Good Friday, and then the death march until the last day in May. I considered I often learned more interesting stuff reading the encyclopedia and watching the original Jeopardy! than I did sitting in class. It could be that a well edited daily newspaper would have a field day occupying the vaccuum created by the second-to-second din of rumor-mongering and future tense "news". If any paper were to get a reputation for creating solid, legitimate news that wasn't hot infotainment garbage, they could make a killing. There's a market for it out there, and literally nobody supplying it.
Really, just a couple pages of actual news from the previous day, coupled with a fairly robust editorial section headed by two level headed people of the MAGA or "Old School Democrat" persuasion to keep each other honest and prevent too much of an overt lunge into partisan rah-rah solipsism... it could be nice. In 2012 I happened to visit my grammar school building; it was open that Saturday for voting, and I wandered in. They have air-conditioned the place. The ground-floor auditorium was partitioned off for the voting that day, but it was recognizable.
Later it became a charter school and got a name change from "McDonogh," and now I think it's closed and is becoming condos or something. Tempus keeps on fugit-ing, huh? We still have a couple of arts & entertainment papers, distributed free at coffee shops and restaurants. One reports on local and state politics; the other doesn't. I flick through them now and then, but I've never felt as though I belonged in this town or region, and I don't go to nightclubs or bars. So to me it's all kind of "Gee, these colorful natives have odd customs, don't they?"

There's a weird parallel between newspapers and entertainment in general.
They lament the death of "superhero movies". Well... yeah. You hired retards and lunatics to start making them. They started sucking. People stopped going. Not really a mystery. Last Saturday night was the 31st Annual "White Linen" Night downtown. The art galleries in the Central Business District and nearby stay open late, offer wine and crackers, and people (often dressed in, you guessed it, white linen) wander around in the heat and listen to music from local bands. I'm surprised Miss Linda didn't want to go. Maybe she's getting tired of the ten-month summers here.

Everyone knows the biggest attraction to newspapers was (is) obituaries and comics. And political cartoons, back when they were good. Posted by: H at August 04, 2025 06:37 AM (2gjbv) And the sports section. Before it became just another instrument of "social justice". Kinda nice to be at a place in my life where I don't know or care what's on TV anymore. I stream what I want when I want without commercials. Also keeps me blissfully unaware of a lot of cultural trends. Maybe lots of people live this way now. Not sure.

@18/FenelonSpoke: "I do have a tech question. My screen jumps around a lot at this site. Anybody else have this problem and if so, what's to be done about it?"
Happening here too. Annoying. I believe that it's the inserted posts from X, Instagram, Youtube, and other external web pages. There's a small spot for them inserted in-line on the main page. Those expand to a "placeholder" box, and then resize to their final size once the data comes down from whatever site they're at and render here. This process causes everything below those placeholders to jump around until the inserted foreign content has finished resizing. What's the fix? There isn't an easy one. I just sit back and let the content settle down for about 10 seconds then go back to reading the new content. I've also got in the habit of making note of what comment # I've read just before I refresh the page so I know I'm starting to read at the right point. I have a WIN11 laptop with an HDMI port. Can I slave a 2nd monitor using an HDMI cable?
thnx and cheers Posted by: Don Black at August 04, 2025 06:13 AM (AOsQT) Just plug it into an HDMI port on a monitor or TV and it should work. If you are using a TV make sure the “Source/Input” is set to the right HDMI port. Then you might have to go into Windows Settings in the Display section and decide if you want to use dual screens, or have the TV or monitor display the same as your laptop screen, which it defaults too. You can also adjust which side your second monitor is in relation to your laptop so you can slide the mouse over to the correct side (left or right) if using it in dual screen. Nice hash, AOsQT, BTW. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at August 04, 2025 07:13 AM (O7YUW) There’s not much you can do for embedded X posts. X takes a long time to load in embeds, Elon trying to save money probably. If you’re on a slow internet connection, like 4G on a phone, it gets worse. Posted by: SpeakingOf at August 04, 2025 07:27 AM (6ydKt) 116

Posted by: Quarter Twenty at August 04, 2025 06:56 AM (XQo4F) Yes, the vast majority live this way now, the younger even more than the older. This is why Network TV is dying, and will soon be dead. Except for sporting events, no one does “appointment tv anymore. CBS is the first to start to crack and admit this - the rest will follow. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 04, 2025 07:27 AM (WEiXt) 117
