Hello K.T. and fellow Pet Morons. After taking last week off, I have a few interesting updates.

First, Chick A's problem with Splay Legs has been resolved. Dr. S. removed the bindings after 12 days and was satisfied with the results. One eagle-eyed commentator in the comments sections asked a question about his toes, noticing that one foot had 2 toes forward and 2 back, while the other foot had 3 forward and 1 back. Normal is 2 forward and 2 back. I asked Dr. S. about this and he wasn't too concerned. He feels like this should self-correct once they get in a proper cage and start perching.

Chicks A and B have left the T-Rex phase and actually look like little birds. They have started wing flapping and should be ready to make their first flight soon. This will be a major milestone in their development. Notice that Chick B's colors are starting to come in nicely on his breast. The other picture shows how much Chick A's wing and tail feathers have come in.

Chicks C and D are doing well too. As you can see, they have really grown, but are still in the fuzzy state

Regards,

David

So glad to hear about Chick A's legs improving!

Chicks A and B are starting to develop some personality!

PetMoron Adjacent Animals
Encountered by Members of The Horde

From gp:

Some bugs that members of The Horde could perhaps identify: Friendly, not friendly? Could the chicks above eat any of them?

I took Ava (age eight) and Nana for a visit to an Illinoisgravel hill prairie in 2017. I brought my sweep net, and my Canon PowerShot SX150 IS, which I found at a garage sale for $2.

Nana brought her Nikon CoolPix L22. I set the camera on macro, handed it to Ava, and I caught and posed the bugs for them to shoot. Here are five pics. I'll send more next week.

5 The guy singing to the baby donkey made me think of the way I sing to our dog. I am NOT a good singer, but she loves it when I sing to her for some reason.

I'll take a song we just heard and randomly substitute "dog" for a one-syllable word and her name, Luna, for a two-syllable word. Absolutely silly but she seems to enjoy it.

Miss Linda said she read a 'Net story about a cat who was adopted, and immediately had to go on a strict diet and exercise regimen. He weighed forty pounds. Which I find hard to believe. I can imagine Maine Coons, healthy ones, weighing in at twenty, because they have big frames. Maybe a truly obese cat (who should be twelve, say) could be twenty-five. But *forty*??? The animal wouldn't be able to breathe, let alone move.

10 SS sounds stoned af in that ad.

In terms of the ugly mewling dripdicks whining about the ad — and the similar ad by Golden Chad — I can’t tell if they’re mad butthurt about ‘genetics’ because (i) they think genetics is fake and a nazi meme or (ii) they believe in genetics but hate it because they know their offspring will also be ugly mewling dripdicks.

Posted by: Piper at August 02, 2025 03:54 PM (pZEOD)

22 Even the healthiest-eating cats I've known, generally the largest ones -- Arizona the part-Coon, big black Wolf, and nearly-as-big black Stirling -- did not eat more than they should at any meal. Yes, Arizona did once blimp up to sixteen pounds from his usual fourteen; he was getting middle-aged at ca. nine years old, and maybe was not playing as often as he once did. But that two pounds is analogous to me gaining twenty. Concerning, something to get to work on, but not obesity.

Yes, I put AZ on the vet-recommended diet. It was tough, and he hated it. But I got him back down to his burly fourteen, and he lived another seven and a half years.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 02, 2025 03:54 PM (omVj0)

23 I heard that weight loss in fat cats has to be carefully managed, due to the risk of 'fatty liver disease.' I've never had one get really fat. I've met a few cats that were very dense, amazingly heavy for their size, like they're made of neutronium.

Posted by: gp at August 02, 2025 03:57 PM (2XN3U)

24 Speaking of vets, Stirling the Feline Duke of Vicksburg is going in for his rabies shot and flea treatment on Monday. No doubt I'll have to listen to a lecture about his weight. He's at about fourteen pounds on a long and muscular frame, so I'm not too worried. If I did try to put him on a diet, since Dagny eats at the same time, he'd just go and gobble her food (which I suspect he often does anyway). If he really needed a diet, I'd have to feed her separately, in the bathroom or something.

Her Majesty is engaged today in committee work. The breed standard was written in 1905 and revised over the years. In the last revision in 1972, a single word, an important descriptive adjective, in describing the hock disappeared.

Now the breed club wants to reinsert that word. But any change in the breed standard is a long and bloody process involving the AKC and the members of the club. A committee, on which Her Majesty is a member, was set up and over a period of a couple of years has worked to determine how this word disappeared in the 1972 revision. It appears to have been completely inadvertent.

Arizona and Wolf were like that. When AZ was about fourteen, I left him with Linda while I moved to Denver. She swears to this day that he pined away and didn't eat properly, and developed the fatty liver disease. I had to feed him through a stomach tube all that first summer in CO -- which turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be.

I'm not sure about the "pining" thing. Maybe it was just his age and it would have happened anyway.

31 My sister had a YUGE Manx cat. He was a big boi to begin with, and was a bit of a chow hound , especially after he had his daily pot leaf. I think he was over 20 pounds. He made hard thumping noises going up and down the stairs.

32 Update on the giant kitteh box off the back of the house. The cat still hates it. Won't even go near the open window despite having had to become an indoor kitteh 4 weeks ago due to coyotes in da hood. Which I have yet to see and have enough time to react to with .22 pellet gun fire.
A friend of my wife's got attacked by one while walking her little yappy dogs last week. She fought it off only to have a deer a block later try to stomp them. Which she also fought off. I think it may have smelled the coyotes.
This deer and yote's in the hood is sort of new. I've said for the last few years that nothing will be done until the mayor's kid gets stomped or bit. Of course she is a childless karen type.
I plan on eating the deer when the bad times hit.

33 As for little Dagny La Siberienne, she is still aloof, but affectionate in her own fashion. She likes to join me on the bathroom counter while I brush my teeth in the mornings. And if she's spread out on the floor, and you sit down and pet her, she will roll over to have her belly rubbed. This, I maintain, is "accepting affection," not "giving affection." But it shows she is very trusting.

She has really developed nicely with me. A month from now will mark three years since I adopted her, and she is much better filled out in fur and body. Takes a few years, they say, for Siberians to mature.

34 Back in the 1990s, I shot thousands of 35mm closeups of flowers and bugs in nature preserves in NY, ME, IN, IL, WI, MO. Some of them are good enough that I'd like to share. They're on prints and negatives in a big tub that I haven't opened in a couple decades. I just have to gather the gumption to sort through them and scan the best ones.

38 Wolfus,
I’m surprised you’re still getting rabies shots for your kitties. Lucy doesn’t go outside. She doesn’t get shots. She got some when I adopted her and got tested for feline leukemia, but after that, she goes to the vet for her bloodwork for her hyperthyroid and that’s about it. The vet isn’t insistent on her getting shots.

I don’t trust immunizations. Not since Covid. Nope. Not for me or my kitty.

The vets here remind you strenuously, as I think it's a legal requirement. For outdoor animals, I suspect -- but neither of my cats goes out. Dagny loves to sit and look out through the screen when I open the main door, and Stirling acts like he'd love to dash out, but he hesitates and dithers and never does go out.

The rabies shots don't seem to affect them any. Like you, I decline any others. The topical flea treatment, though, really worked for Dagny back in May; she's due for it again.

47 I've delayed my cats' vaccinations mainly because vet visits are getting very pricey. Seems like I never leave their office without a minimum $200 bill. We get the rabies shots because we've had bats in this house; I used to have a bunch of bats, but not so many since the masonry was repaired. The county could fine me for not getting rabies vax on schedule, but I guess they don't enforce it unless they have a hardon for you.

Posted by: gp at August 02, 2025 04:30 PM (2XN3U)

48 I’m fortunate to live in a space I don’t have to worry about fleas. Lucy had them once, when we moved to a place where another cat had lived with the prior tenants. We bombed the place and treated her and never had a problem afterwards. It was a free standing house, so we didn’t share walls with anyone else.

When we moved down to the beach, the place was newly redone, no carpets to worry about. So she’s not had an issue at all.

I did get her a new brush from Chewy which helps shed her undercoat. She was pulling out tufts of it and barfing up fur slugs for weeks. Now? Nothing. And she seems very happy to get brushed.

49 Wow. I almost missed the pet thread, the highlight of Saturday afternoons!

Hi.

Well, sad to report, Daisy the high-velocity Malinois finally caught another squirrel yesterday. Don't know that she meant to kill it. She plays too rough. She did drop it on command, but possibly only because a game of fetch was in the offing. I know they're just tree-rats, but squirrels are so cuuuuute. Poor critter.

Meanwhile, we're still feeding the cats down at the now-empty neighbor's house. The pale yellow adult male (neutered) I call Buttercup has allowed me to pet him, but still is a bit wary. The smaller, dark mottled one I call Rascal will come out from under the bushes to eat, but keeps its distance from us. Annnnd, now we've seen a kitten, which flees when we approach and stays hidden under the front porch. One, at least.

Been a while since we've had farm cats. Glad for the vermin control. Would appreciate their being around our house, but the loudly barking dog means they probably won't move on up. Worry about them being vulnerable to predators, of course; and wonder what will happen come winter, but that's a few days away.

Buttercup is really a nice cat.

53 At her vet visit in May, Dagny was at 9.5 pounds, I think. For such a tiny kitten in '22, she really has developed: Her body, as per Siberian breed standard, is shaped like a little whiskey barrel, and her legs are small tree trunks. Then there is her shaggy soft fur, like combed cotton, making her look like a puffball.

Stirling's medium-hair black coat is more like silk, and was so even in his kittenhood.

54 48 Ugh, fleas are the worst. They are a PITA to get rid of, and embarrassing as hell when people see them hopping off you in public. My cats stay strictly inside, for a dozen good reasons, of which fleas are high on the list.

Haven't seen the tortoiseshell feral in a few days. She approaches my door from time to time for handouts. If I see her, I'll put some dry food in a bowl and retreat -- she won't come near unless I have the screen door between me and her. The food is always gone in the morning. I guess she eats it, though it could be an opossum or raccoon eating it, or any of a number of other ferals.

Bissell advertises units to deal with that. I have an older Bissell, not specifically marketed for pet hair, and it does fine with longhaired cats. I can recommend Bissell's service too. I ordered some filters from their website, they got stuck in a shipper warehouse somewhere, and when I called about the delay, they rushed me a new set and had the originals returned to them.

63 58 Also, can anyone recommend a vacuum to deal with hair? I sweep before vacuuming but it still gets wrapped around the axle, as it were.

Two long-haired cats in this house.

Do you have a cheap shop vac?

That will get the long hair, AND it is handy to own one for when the basement has a little leak, or the seal goes bad on your dishwasher, etc.

Sorry about your son's cat. That must have been a big shock. It's good, though, that his boss was understanding and that the cat could be buried at the farm.

65 My pet cat Mittens, a neutered male and 12 years old, died Thursday morning July 24, 2025 around dawn. I had hoped he would live a few more years, but it was his time to die. At least now my late wife can have him with her in Heaven. He was a handsome tuxedo cat, quite stubborn, and sweet natured. He was a good cat.

67 I have a Maine Coon, and fortunately I also have a Bissell Powerforce Bagless Turbo. I don't know how old it is, but it's a well-engineered durable design that's easy to service and cleans great. It sweeps up a coffee can volume of hair per week in here.

Ajax was murder on vacuum cleaners. Just insane amount of hair shed constantly. I got one of the Bissell pet vacuums. It worked well enough although I did have to replace the belt once already.

Thankfully, Reefs hair is much shorter and no where near as dense.

78 "My son woke up Thursday morning to find his 3 y.o. male rescue cat dead. He thinks just a heart attack, since everything else at his house was completely normal."

My Marble passed away at age 3 from heart failure. I saw the symptoms two days beforehand, and took her to the vet, who gave the terminal prognosis. The sign is in the cat's posture when in the sphinx position; it rests on the chest with the front legs spread a bit, instead of with the feet together, chest off the floor.

I was told that the best cure for losing a pet is to get a new pet ASAP to help relive the grieving process. I followed that advice and got another Chihuahua puppy and it worked....

86 It’s not the hair that gets me it’s tracking the litter everywhere. My routine in the morning is to empty the 3 litter boxes ( I only have 2 cats and empty them twice a day if disturbed) and sweep the entire house . It’s like they scoop it up in their paws and and spread it around like they’re feeding chickens.

87 Blue Angels airshow going on. They sometimes run over my peninsula and make quite the racket. Lucy is non plussed.

Tomorrow I will go to my sons house to watch in full as he has a view of the lake and the planes buzz his house. They are so close we can see the pilots in their seats. Makes the windows rattle.

Love them!

89 'Nother Daisy dog tail today

I've been sleeping late lately (I blame the ONT), meaning to get up but lazy. This morning, Daisy insistently roused me out of bed. Went to the bathroom, opened the outside door to the fenced back yard, and Daisy walked out, looked around, did nothing, and came back in.

Rather than just go back to bed, I got dressed, and dared to lay down on the bed for a minute. Daisy wasn't having it. She licked my elbow and nuzzled my toes and even put front paws up on the bed. So I found myself on a leash out walking with Daisy. I wasn't getting away with lounging around this morning!!

94 I had to changing feeding the strays. The two cats coming into eat both have collars. The little black one tried to pick a fight with Mr Trouble. Trouble likes to sleep under a wheelbarrow that is turned over. Black cat was swinging for all it was worth but couldn't reach Troubles. No cat food oit during the day and I've gone to cheap kibbles outside.

Was probably chasing a fly.

That would freak me out pretty badly.

Posted by: mindful webworker - I ain't no Ozzy. at August 02, 2025 05:20 PM (+fWH5)

98 The bat did not FLY into her mouth.

She opened her mouth to scream and the bat crawled in.

Pro tip: When there is something crawling on your face, close your pie hole!

Further, you don't get rabies by licking a bat. Did the bat bite her? Should have been easy enough for the doctor to confirm there were no skin breaks.

I am truly amazed at how many times bad things happen to stupid people compared to smart, calm people. It seems quite unfair that random events of "bad luck" are distributed so unequally!
