  • Epic Games just won its lawsuit against Google. Again. (The Verge)

Google plans to appeal - again - to either an en banc sitting of the 9th Circuit or the Supreme Court.

But Google no longer has a stay on the lower court's ruling, and Epic plans to put its own app store inside the Google Play store as soon as tomorrow.

Heavy rains precluded doing much of anything outdoors yesterday, but today we hope to get out and do some boating and tubing.

12 These are some of the interesting facts which I learned from various posters on ASHQ yesterday. I apparently have never said a funny thing in the entire time time I've been here . What? Does this guy keep a voluminous record. "It's September 5,
2020 and Fen again said nothing amusing today " Another one commented that I'm totally lacking in grace and humility . Actually, I'm not totally lacking in grace .She's the daughter of one of our menbers and occasionally comes to church. I do lack humility but that a rather Puritan name I haven't seen yet. Maybe for our Thanksgiving Sunday service.

30 Evening and morning, AosHQ satellites! 'Tis Friday again, the consummation devoutly to be wished! And a new month as well. How 'bout that?

The Universal logo from the Thirties with the prop airplane flying -- at an orbital height! -- around the turning Earth? Must have been really startling to movie audiences the first time they saw that.

Lousy-ana has a new law that goes into effect today: no cell phone use or texting while driving. No, it's not government's proper function to be micro-managing its citizens like that, but maybe it will keep lousy driving down to the level it was before the toy phones came along. The other new "driving" law: No driving in the left lane unless you are passing or getting ready to turn. I don't know if that applies only to highways or to two-lane roads, though.

32 Okay, the left-lane law applies to multi-lane roads like highways and the Interstate. Unfortunately they are doing the micro-manage thing, saying even *one* mile an hour under the speed limit can incur the fine. Well, since nearly everybody drives ten or more mph *over* the limit anyway, I guess it's not something I need to worry too much about.

The new Aldi opened five minutes' walk away. Miss L. got herself up and was in line at 7:15 to get in the door at 9:00. She won't get up that early to go out to breakfast, oh, no; but to stand in line in the heat to get a few freebies or heavily discounted goodies, no problem. ????

55 PA enacted a "no phone use at all while driving" thing recently. Which i feel like has been a thing for a while, except now it's "and we really mean it".

Jersey went on a rampage pulling people over for distracted driving a few years ago.

Honestly, I can't even be that upset. Set your navigation and your playlist up before you head out. If something's so important you can't wait a couple minutes to reply to somebody, then it's important enough to pull in somewhere for a second.

I'm pretty sure my 2016 will pair up with the phone . . . but I have never bothered with it. If I need an address that badly, I'll pull over and consult the phone. Same if it rings while I'm driving. Nothing can be so important that it should distract me from watching out for the crazy drivers here. Yes, I know, fiddling with the radio is a distraction, but a quick press of an onscreen preset button changes the radio station and I'm done.

The basic forecasting is actually reasonably accurate. Some forecasting models have some hysteria built in, for example the record breaking heat arriving five days from now often moderates to mid 90s as the day approaches.

The Aldis here usually have only one manned checkout, but it's rarely that slow; the staffer is quick. My only real complaint is that they open late (for me), nine am. It would be so much better if they opened at eight or even seven like Walmart.

Come to think of it, I need to visit one today to pick up a pizza for our Friday night dinner. Their "Philly Cheese Steak" pizza is quite good. The one by my house will have higher sales tax because of its location, but the convenience may offset that.

But the pics (as usual from that vendor's website) were in .webp format, and Mac's Preview wouldn't display them; and I suspected the phone would not either. So I looked up how to do a screen shot on a Mac, opened each pic in a Brave browser tab, saved the screen shots as .jpgs and renamed them, and then Bluetoothed the pics to the phone.

71 Tech related, I suppose: I just realized how AI has completely taken over as the Meme, and now nobody even remembers how to spell "Nanotechnology". Everything was going to be solved by nanobots, nanomachines, nanothis, nanothat. Now it's a big yawn and new savior of our species is delusional chatbots.

Once upon a time, some clever inventor would find a pressing need in the world at large and create entire new fields of science and mathematics just to solve that problem. How do we figure out how much to plant or when to harvest? How do we keep track of time precisely? How do we communicate long distances? How do we drop a cannonball on a gnat's pinky finger from three countries away?

Now it's almost like the process is in reverse. A diffuse clique of government funded boffins at universities comes up with some incredibly obscure thing that no one ever asked for, and then people who want to make a buck spend a decade or so trying to hype the general population into thinking that Incredibly Obscure Thing No One Asked For is the cure for all that ails them.

Family arrives today.

Still gots lots to do, but now I can delegate.

The house has not looked this good for 10 years. That's how long I was a caretaker husband. The last two years I was a hospice husband, in retrospect.

Individuality and a smorgasbord of Christian ethos made America great. The Hebrews and early Christians used what worked to distill wisdom for Americans to harvest.

Pragmatically, Christianity is one of the greatest way of life seen, with a lot of hope for believers. It helps fight the reactionary stone-age tribe believers.

126 Pixy, Daft Punk’s video for Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger has all of the 80s looking anime in it.

I’m surprised you didn’t pick that one.

https://youtu.be/gAjR4_CbPpQ

The animated music video for "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" was produced by Daft Punk and directed by Kazuhisa Takenouchi, director for Toei Animation, under the supervision of Leiji Matsumoto. It features the four alien characters shown on the single cover in a vast electronic facility. There, they are cosmetically changed by various machines to resemble humans, and have their memories replaced. The video was first released as an individual episode in promotion for the single release. It later appeared as a scene in the feature film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

That’s a lot of 5s.

Posted by: m at August 01, 2025 07:06 AM (aURVT)

133 Yesterday I wanted to load the pics of my most recent vintage pipe purchase onto my phone, instead of the usual phone pic-to-computer routine. I figured it would work in reverse, and it will.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 01, 2025 05:58 AM (omVj0)

Try getting an iimage file viewer called Xee 3 for MacOS.

You do some light editing in it.
But you can also open a webp and hit Export or Save As, can’t remember which right now, and save it to jpg or other formats.

I’ve been using it for 18 years or so and it’s great for little things like that.

I just watched that one, too, since it was in the recommendations.

I think this one comes first in sequence, and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is the second part, since they have memories from the first one in it?

I’d like to see the anime, because the style is very nice.
