45 Waxholm or Vaxholm is a small city near Stockholm, close enough, says Wiki, for there to be a ferry service between them. Thus it's at about the same latitude as Stockholm -- not way up at the Arctic Circle, but about seven degrees south of it.

Which is pretty darn close to the Arctic Circle, when you stop and think about it.

96 A Day in October, near Waxholm, Sweden (1873)
Alfred Wahlberg

At first I thought this image was a photograph from that period, but it is an oil painting. WTH? I couldn't find any deeper discussion about how this image came to be so I am going to do what I do best: make stuff up; I am a biological AI bot.

Having more than a passing interest in photography this image is clearly influenced, if not outright copied from, a photograph. Which is fascinating since photographers at this time were imitating the visual artists and wouldn't find their own photograph specific visual style until the 1920s. Ol' Alfie on the other hand is going the other way it seems. And that is where the interest lays.

The way the perspective works in this image looks exactly like what you get from the equivalent of a modern 35mm lens; it is uncanny. Then there is what looks like filter light from an overcast sky; that is prime time stuff as it constrains the dynamic range - the shadows are not overly plugged and the highlights still hold detail. And lastly, the translation of real world color into full range grey scale is spot on with that found in a B&W print.

Banger. Would Hang.

106 The art....

Dammit. How'm I supposed to know if the title checks out? Is it really October? Fuck I don't know. Is it really a town in Sweden? Fuck I don't know!

I like it but I can't say for certain if the title checks out.

A few years ago, the art museum in Evansville Indiana had a bunch of work from an Indiana artist who just used graphite on paper. These drawings looked like B&W photos! They were that detailed. The one I recall most clearly was a close up of a stream bed. The water, the pebbles, the sand and silt.... Amazing stuff.

Though I think Brussels is missing a chance to hop onto a hip, new modern trend, they need a Fat, Black Woman Pis statue to truly enter the 21st Century.

174 Speaking of art, mermaids, and boobs, the current Little Mermaid statue is not the original, but rather the 4 or 5th replacement, according to what a Dane has told me.

Apparently it has been vandalized more than once, which is interesting, considering that the Vandals were a Germanic people who were first reported in the written records as inhabitants of what is now Poland, during the period of the Roman Empire. Much later, in the fifth century, a group of Vandals led by kings established Vandal kingdoms first within the Iberian Peninsula, and then in the western Mediterranean islands, and North Africa.

Archaeologists associate the early Vandals with the Przeworsk culture, which has led to some authors equating them to the Lugii, who were another group of Germanic peoples associated with that same archaeological culture and region.

Archaeologically, the Vandals are not known to have lived in significant numbers in Denmark.

Bosco chocolate syrup gets its name from the brand name "Boscul" of a coffee product produced by the William S. Scull Company, which acquired the rights to Bosco in 1928. The Scull Company, based in Camden, New Jersey, also manufactured a popular coffee blend called Boscul. The syrup itself was reportedly invented in 1928 by an unknown physician. The name "Bosco" is also thought to be derived from the Ancient Greek word "bóskō," meaning "I nourish".

Thankfully we were only looking because new house, maybe new fridge.

I looked at them like they were retarded and asked 'Do we have a set of calibrated feeler gauges?' Blank looks everywhere- like I was speaking Swahili.

I dug in our CMM room and we DID have a set of feeler gauges (with a lot of the gauges missing, of course) but the guy who maintains the instruments was like 'Huh, I did not know they were called that.'

265 The funny part is, because my brothers and I were so bad, I thought daughters would be easier. WRONG. The boy is practically zero-maintenance, and even helps with stuff. I just have to feed him, and help with some occasional homework. His grades are pretty high. He's even working a job now and trying to get a car, and figure out his future - with minimal prompting. It's like we were, but without all the bail money and medical bills.

The girls are much higher-maintenance. They're more... restful. But also more restive.

Boys are so much easier.
