Even Left-Wing CNN and Axios Admit That Trump Has Won Completely on Tariffs

Axios: Trump won. Europeans and "experts" sad.

In the Trump-dominated global economy, the U.S. gets plenty but gives nothing in return.

Why it matters: This is the reality of the asymmetric trade deals touted by the White House, which show how far foreign leaders will go to safeguard access to the U.S. market.

Say that was Trump's and Bessent's guiding principle, wasn't it?

Which the "experts" claimed was false?

The big picture: Trump announced agreements with Europe and Japan in which both agreed to drop their tariff rates to zero, promised eye-popping investments in the U.S., and opened markets to American producers.

In return, those countries get some assurance on their tariff rate -- both 15%, and both of which could have been worse -- even if it puts their industries at a disadvantage.

What they're saying: "Both Tokyo and Brussels apparently viewed the price of a 15% tariff worth paying in light of the alternative of higher tariffs, uncertainty and counter-retaliation," Wendy Cutler, former acting U.S. trade representative under Obama, tells Axios.

The White House said that smaller nations -- including Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia -- would also lower their tariffs and open markets to U.S. producers.

...

Von der Leyen did not say what the U.S. conceded in the agreement when asked by a reporter.

"I think we hit exactly the point we wanted to find -- rebalance but enable trade on both sides," von der Leyen said in response to the question.

The word "re-balance" means that she agrees that trade was out-of-balance before.

CNN also admits Trump won:

But what about The Experts?!?

Here's what The Experts had to say:

Sean Spicer is at his wits' end with these "experts" whose only expertise is being wrong every single time on every single question.

And he'd like to know when, exactly, "The Experts" plan to start making accurate predictions.

And if they can't -- then why are we even listening to them at all?

As an editorial decision, "Expert" should be banned from all reporting.

If you want to quote an "expert" you name that person and list their credentials, as well as a percentage of right/wrong predictions they've had over the past 5 years if they are predicting anything.

If there's no record of their predictions, you are to label them as "untested", and definitely not an "expert."

I think most people were willing to say that tariffs COULD be sound foreign policy. Get other nations to stop screwing the U.S. of A. with an unbalanced tariff policy. If it worked, which it appears it is, I believe most of us who are skeptical of the former, and more than happy with the latter.

93 To me the question wasn't whether Trump could get the world to knuckle under. I figured that was a given - we're their biggest customer. All of them.

It remains to be seen if this will work to our overall benefit over the long term. I think it will, given the opportunity, but my definition of "working" is considerably different than many people.

I want to grow domestic industry as much as feasibly possible. But that will mean a general, more-or-less permanent rise in prices for many goods.

Many consumers will HATE that. Those people want their low-quality imports more than they want a good job market or economic independence. They may become restive enough to demand a reversion to a consumption-driven model before much industrial growth can be achieved, in which case we'd have been better off not bothering with this in the first place.

We'll see.

Economy will be a large factor, but midterms will be at least partially driven by enthusiasm with bigger effects than in presidential elections because the turnout will be smaller (a 15% drop is significant).

I really just wonder what the effect fed grants being cut off will have on GOTV efforts, what the DOJ looking into swing state voter rolls will have (Dillon requested that this weekend, in particular from Nevada), and what Democrats rock-bottom approval will have.

I think we're in uncharted midterm territory, anomalous, one might say, and falling back on, "Well, presidents always lose in their midterms," feels like lazy thinking.

I think there's as much a chance we see 2002 response as we do 2006 response.

The confusion comes from there being no one definition of 'best'. Is it peak value for a year, or a few year period, or being good and reliable for decades?

Norm Cash had a year hitting .360 or so when batting averages were pretty low and dropping.

On the other hand, that year Mantle and Maris were chasing Ruth so maybe they'd goosed the baseballs. Or it was hot. Or they'd expanded the league so there were more bad pitchers.

163 Journalists have rendered the expert down to being a “fact provider” to support whatever narrative they’re trying to spread at any given moment.

That’s why so many of the experts in news articles or clips are college professors who are experts on a subject solely because of a few letters behind their name.

Alternatively they find some other expert due to years of experience in that field or business.

Media used to include competing opinions from several experts on subjects. Now they just find the expert with the opinion they need and contact them to get the quote they need or the prediction they want.

They’ve killed the credibility of experts by turning expertise into propaganda, just like everything else they do.

Rubin has expressed reservations about gay adoption since he got his kid, not based on his experiences but just looking at what some people are doing with them. I saw a story on Soft White Underbelly that placed an equally horrific light on straights adopting kids, from putatively religious agencies.

I think the whole adoption and surrogacy science and commerce is irretrievably out of the bag and we're in for a whole new other-side-of-the-coin horror.

Although I could be wrong about it being "new," as the human ingenuity for evil and exploitation is eternal and I just don't know about earlier practices of breeding slaves for labor and sexual deviancy. I can scarcely stand to think about slave women who had their babies taken and sold.

377 I consider the Hondas and Toyotas built in the US to be "American". I have prejudice *against* Chrysler, GM, and Ford because their vehicles don't stand up dollar-vs-dollar against the Hondas and Toyotas. Chrysler, GM, and Ford can't build the same quality at the same price-point because of several decades of *terrible* union wage-stuffing and retirement-stuffing that the manufacturers are still paying for.

Why I went with Hyundai's premium brand Genesis. No regrets.

381 Turrentine and all the semi-smart Dems are trying to tell them they should act more like Republicans, with a bit more emphasis on social programs. But they're doomed to fail because who do Dems today love? Mamdani; Jasmine Crockett; AOC. They're not gonna moderate at all, they're going to do a Thelma and Louise into the next couple of elections.
Posted by: Tom Servo at July 28, 2025 05:01 PM (uWKK

This is the problem that Turrentine & Co don't have a solution for - and will never admit. Dems' success came from them pushing 'moderate' candidates that said all the right things to get elected. The problem was that their leadership was always far left. They had no guilt about pushing them to make votes that benefitted that left - even if they inevitably got sacrificed in the next election (e.g. Obamacare). COVID forced all their masks off, and they can't go back to that hide-the-lefty game in the short to medium term. They're stuck.

I think it was the idea that a bunch of European settlers were going to take Dutch and English culture, add in an Enlightenment flair, strip out the class / religion / aristocracy bullshit that dominated Europe at the time, and be a country of frontiersmen.

And it worked. Astonishingly well. Yes, geography and natural resources were important, but I think we would have had a similar outcome if the settlers ended up in Africa instead of North America.

The more you fuck with that basic formula of success, the more likely you crash the whole thing.

And I think we're well on our way to crashing the whole thing. People only work that hard if they think there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

It's a tax. But who pays it is flexible.

444 Is that an issue? I'm, eh, no expert, not even up to utter ignorance level on steel.
Posted by: Blonde Morticia at July 28, 2025 05:11 PM (lCaJd)

Like most American industries, America's ruling class raffled our steel sector off to the highest bidder, and spent the proceeds on yachts, coke, and catamites between the 70s and 90s.

Traitors. should not have been allowed to destroy it because it is a military necessity. Same with having no ability to increase ammo production and having 1 or 2 plants only.

445 >>> 422 415 Full tariffs. Repeal the income tax.
Posted by: Boss Moss at July 28, 2025 05:10 PM (TzkcV)

I hear that the Administration was looking to eliminate the income tax for folks making less than $150K/year, as long as tariff income exceeds $700 billion/year. Not sure I agree with that, as all citizens need to have some skin in the American game, but it's a wild notion.
Posted by: Darrell Harris at July 28, 2025 05:13 PM (6skdV)

Get rid of ALL income tax, and get rid of the IRS.

Maybe people should have skin in the game by getting a fcking JOB instead of floating in the welfare hammock for their entire lives. (Yes, states have their own programs, but how is that working for them *now*, and what happens when their subsidies are reduced or entirely removed?)

At least they are fair -- they don't let you pipeline to the West coast or Churchill either.

451 Perhaps one of you from up north can tell me - British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba - are they more conservative like Oklahoma or Texas, or would they be like another Colorado or California? I get that they are fed up with Ottowa, but where would they land on the political spectrum if they became part of the US? What if they just did their own thing as Western Canada?
Posted by: Don in SoCo at July 28, 2025 04:32 PM (vd6bO)

Albert and Saskatchewan are pretty conservative, but not monolithically so, but then neither is Texas. Manitoba has too many gimmiedats. Interior British Columbia tracks with Alberta, mostly, but the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island is moonbat central. Parallel to Washington.

455 The new Corvette is now effectively a mid-engine Euro sports car, albeit at half the price. It's Americanness is gone.

I'm not 'vette guy but Chevy beat the euros at their own game. Better performance and durabillity at half or less of the price. Plus you can get it worked on in every little town in the USA.

456 Re the Tariffs - I was skeptical. I could see what Trump was trying to do, but I wasn't sure it would work. It worked.

Remember, each country that signs put more pressure on every other country to sign, just to have the field be level. A U.S. is 40% of the world consumer market. We are past the point that countries that don't sign on, meh. Tough shit for them. We have more than enough opportunities for our exports, and more than enough suppliers for our imports.

457 So suddenly CNN is your voice of reason because they say something you agreee with. lol Talk about fair weather fans.

EUn deal imposes 15% tax on goods sold to US. US auto makers and Boeing pay 50% tariff on steel while Airbus sends their planes to the US for nothing.

Talk about a twisted view of winning. Bend over while he gives you some more, you gullible bunch of rubes.
