President Donald Trump announced a sweeping trade agreement with the European Union (EU) on Sunday, setting a baseline 15 percent tariff on European imports — including automobiles — while keeping existing 50 percent duties on steel and aluminum in place. As part of the deal, the EU committed to purchasing $750 billion in U.S. energy products. Trump announced the agreement during a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after a private meeting at Trump Turnberry in Scotland. . . . . . “We don’t know what that number is,” he said, but went on to note that the purchase of military equipment would be in the “hundreds of billions of dollars.” Moreover, the EU will pay a 15 percent tariff rate to import products into the U.S., ranging from automobiles to other goods. “So we have a tariff of 15% we have the opening up of all of the European countries, which I think I could say were essentially closed,” Trump said. “I mean, you weren’t exactly taking our orders, you weren’t exactly taking our agriculture, and then you would have smaller things, but for the most part, it was closed, and now it’s open.”This is kind of a pretty big Effin' deal, and we'll know how big in the short term by how the propaganda media distorts and/or totally ignores it as it continues to push Epstein-Epstein nonstop while also ignoring Obamagate or painting it as a Trump witch hunt/persecution of the Dog-eating commie. Of course the markets will no doubt have their own reaction to the news of this deal reflecting sentiment over the long term. As Trump 2.0 demolishes much of the insanity of the regulatory state, this item, along with the renewed commitment to take full advantage of America's vast fossil fuel resources while we and much of the world come to our senses and abandon the green energy/climate change madness is most welcome indeed.

For 50 years, the federal government has been forcing fuel economy standards on auto companies. If the average fuel economy of the cars sold in a year exceeded a federal standard, the companies had to cough up enormous penalties. Passed in 1975 as a way to deal with an energy crisis (that was caused by government price controls), “corporate average fuel economy” (CAFE) standards – required the fleet of cars sold by an automaker to achieve an arbitrary miles-per-gallon goal. If they missed the goal, they paid hefty annual fines.

Alarmingly, through years of strategic planning, infiltration and coordinated efforts, they appear to be making real progress.What an abject asshole. While there are for sure dozens if not hundreds of examples of Islamic, Leftist and Islamo-Leftist violence that have spilled rivers if not oceans of blood over the past few centuries, especially going back 1500 years to the founding of Islam itself. Car Lovers Rejoice! After 50 Miserable Years, CAFE Standards Are Dead
This time around, Trump is again planning to roll the CAFE standards back. But Congress did him one better. Rather than wait for regulators to rewrite the rule, which can take years and be subject be endless lobbying and litigation from various interest groups – lawmakers simply zeroed out the penalty as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill.
Now, if a car company sells cars that, on average, exceed whatever the fuel-economy limit is technically in force in a given year, they pay… nothing. The mandate is still in place, but the penalty is now $0.00.
So the ridiculous EPA targets for emissions and fuel economy are still in place, but the new law eliminated the penalties for not meeting the targets?
I'd like to be excited about this, but once a leftist Administration is back in the White House, they likely will simply put the penalties back in place. So this seems like a Miracle Max "mostly dead" situation for CAFE standards, instead of "all dead".

Remember- what Republicans eliminated through reconciliation, things like zeroing the NFA Fees and CAFE penalties can potentially be added back by a future Democrat majority. It's the worst system I've seen, and I've had drivers licenses in five states. Alabama's is significantly better than it is in NC.

Weirdly of the 6 states I have lived in as an adult, the best DMV was in Maryland. Highly automated. All automobile services... Registration, licenses, title ... In the same place. Check in at the front, take a number, have a seat.

End result was that the higher ups at the DMV rechecked her test and admitted that she was in the right. She told me that was the fastest an ambulance driver's license had been renewed.

My local dmv is awesome. It’s a digital queue, not appointments. You get texts every 10-15 mins with updates estimated on when your turn will be. Works really well.

I’ve been surprised that few people, even among those of us who welcome the news, dont understand the true significance of cargo ships refusing to transport EV’s.
Simply put, it means Chinese and European EV’s won’t be sold in North America anymore. Even Canada, which probably wants them, won’t be able to get them.

So if a US-based company wants to sell EVs in Europe, they will need to build them in Europe and ship them via railroad.
US-based companies can still try to sell EVs in North America, but considering (1) there is little to no market and (2) the government incentives (tax credit for customers) and mandates are gone, the little market there may have been has quickly disappeared.

Engineers and design teams need to be grounded in facts and science, not DEI. And keep MBAs away from the C-suites. Good designers and engineers are company assets, not liabilities.

....I mention this only because if it's not fixed, some po' teenage male will seize on that and argue that "fines if fuel economy exceeded" had to be true cuz they read it in a really thoughtful, well-reasoned blog with only minimal nudity.

And that is the problem right now in the auto industry. GM, Ford and Stellantis all used the cover of COVID lockdowns and forced remote working to push out with retirement packages or layoff thousands of engineers over the past 4 years and replaced them with cheap labor "engineers" in India, Mexico and people from India living in Canada. Instead of paying a good US engineer $90k-$100k + benefits, they are paying remote cheap labor $10-$25k and no benefits (since they hired through contractors).
And those willing to work for those meager wages are NOT the best of the best. I can tell you from experience working with them they are the worst of the worst. No experience, no work ethic.
