THE MORNING RANT: Functioning Gas Cans With Vents Are Legal Again!

Heirloom Quality Gas Can.png

[This header picture is my cherished, heirloom-quality gas can with a vent and a gimmick-free spout. – Buck]

There was a huge victory for normal Americans last week in the battle against our bureaucratic overlords in Washington DC, who are both hostile to freedom and bereft of common sense.

The national gas can nightmare is over. Thank you, Donald Trump! Thank you, Lee Zeldin!

Urban dwellers and those who have servants do all their manual labor may not have understood how despised the vent-less gas cans were, but to that huge group of Americans who actually work with power tools, the gas can regulation was probably the most hated and ridiculed government regulation since the 55-mph national speed limit.

Elections matter, and the election of Donald Trump as president, and his appointment of Lee Zeldin as EPA Administrator, are resulting in a profound rollback of the eco-communist agenda that Democrats were imposing through EPA regulations.

Lee Zeldin’s EPA put out this press release last week:

“Make Gas Cans Great Again by Improving Flow” [EPA Press Release – 7/24/2025]

Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued letters to portable fuel container (PFC or gas can) manufacturers encouraging them to add vents to gas cans to ensure safe and effective refueling. This announcement comes in response to years of complaints about slow, frustrating fuel flow from modern gas cans.

Concurrent with the EPA’s press release, Administrator Zeldin tweeted this mockery of the EPA regulation that he is casting aside, ”Gas cans used to POUR gas. Now they just DRIBBLE like a child’s sippy cup. The Trump EPA’s message to gas can makers: VENT THE DARN CAN and let it FLOW BABY FLOW!”

What is so important about Mr. Zeldin’s announcement of gas can freedom is that he isn’t just triumphantly announcing the return of vented gas cans. No, he is also inviting ridicule upon anyone who might try to defend the government-mandated dribble-cans. No Democrat president (or “polite” Republican president) would ever roll back this regulation, but now that Trump and Zeldin have done so, it is not possible for any Democrat or RINO politician to advocate for the return of the ventless gas can without bringing ridicule upon themselves.

These awful gas cans have been a subject I have written about many times here at Ace of Spades. In fact, it was shortly after I started contributing here in late 2019 that I wrote the first column of mine that was widely linked at conservative websites and social media. While I’ll note that “Make something Great Again” is not terribly original in the Trump era, I am tickled that the title of the EPA’s press release led off with, “Make Gas Cans Great Again…”

My piece back in December 2019 was titled, “Make Gas Cans Great Again & Lock Up the ‘Snow Blower Vote’"

If you’ll indulge me in a quick touchdown dance, here is a bit of what I wrote at the time:

In 2009 the EPA banned the sale of gas cans that functionally pour gas. To be specific, the scientifically illiterate bureaucrats at the EPA outlawed gas cans with vents, mandating that all new gas cans must have crazy contraptions that require three hands to operate. Unlike the old gas cans, the new ones spill gas all over the user and onto the ground. The result of the EPA’s incompetence is a new gas can that is much worse for the environment than the one it replaced. The incompetent regulators at the EPA are so scientifically illiterate that they honestly believed that the vents on gas cans were there to allow gas fumes to escape, rather than the actual purpose of allowing air to flow in to the can so that gas can be poured out. Having received their “science” education in Oppression Studies classes at Grievance State University, these morons making rules for how we gas up our power tools have likely never handled a tool more powerful than their own personal groomers.

The government-mandated, non-functioning gas can may be the most unpopular government-imposed regulatory rule since the 55 mile per hour speed limit. If you don’t know someone who mocks and despises these stupid red canisters, then you are living a very sheltered urban or upscale lifestyle. Most all working-class and middle-class Americans deal with these awful containers, and they mock the government for imposing them on us.

Congress never passed a law which outlawed the old gas cans. Instead, these abhorrent new gas cans were simply foisted on us by zealous government imbeciles who have never mowed a blade of grass or poured a drop of gas out of a gas can.

And once again I’ll point out that the “True Conservatives” at National Review, Wall Street Journal, Dispatch, etc worked feverishly to keep Donald Trump out of the White House over the past three elections, and to elect Hillary, Biden, and Kamala instead. Had they been successful in “saving conservatism,” this triumphant day would not have arrived.

*****

My latest piece at The Blaze has been published, “Time to Redraw America’s Borders — Cities, Counties, and Beyond.”

It discusses how borders and boundaries have always changed over the course of human history - and American history - but too many are stuck right now. There are blue cities that need be carved up, rural counties in blue states that should be emancipated to join neighboring red states, and even a Canadian province or two that would be more of a fit in the United States.

During the Civil War, when Virginia seceded from the Union, West Virginia was born — its counties carved out and reorganized under federal protection. Today, as California’s officials promise to defy federal law and actively rebel against national authority, it may be time to ask: If rebellion defines California’s government, why not liberate its non-rebellious counties?

I genuinely believe that redrawing borders and political boundaries will become an issue like school choice in coming years - an issue that first seemed limited and isolated, but soon becomes a prominent political issue in the battle for liberty.

It’s behind a paywall, but if you’re a Blaze subscriber, I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

13 Way back in the day, I remember cans of HI-C or Hawaiian Punch fruit juice. In order to pour out the juice you'd punch two holes in the top of the can on opposite sides. For the exact same reason why vents existed on gas cans--to allow the fluid to pour smoothly out of the hole.

You don't need advanced degrees in fluid dynamics to figure this out.

With the overturning of Chevron, all new regulation is subject to suit without presumption that the administration is within the correct bounds of statute.

If such a regulation gets written again, it'll be subject to suit where the central point of the suit will be the question of whether the EPA even has the authority to make the regulation at all.

Bare minimum: It'll slow down the adoption of the regulation. More likely: it'll lead to the regulation not going into effect at all.

People aren't going to appreciate the effect of Loper overturning Chevron until we have an administration that tries to overregulate again.

It's incredible how the Administrative State has gained power.

Oregon has banned minimum parking requirements in Oregon's 48 largest cities - so you are free to build a large apartment complex in the middle of an existing neighborhood without providing any parking at all. (All the new tenants will take mass transit and bike! Swearsies!)

This was mandated, not by the legislature, but by "The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development", an agency that 99.9999% percent of Oregonians had never heard of before they did this.

Tough beans if you own a house next to one of these new "car-free" apartment buildings.

86 CA was notorious for this kind of thing, if I remember correctly. The politically connected would throw up an apartment building in a residential area and put in a 10 space parking lot for a 40 unit building.

Portland, of course, got rid of parking minimums before the state did.

It turns out that 75% of the people renting in these "car-free" apartment buildings own cars, of course.

And if you are an elderly couple that used to be able to park in front of your house, and now have to walk six blocks in the rain due to the new apartment dwellers taking all the street parking, you are told that "you don't own the parking space in front of your house", and that this is your problem.

In other words, tant pis.

Still hanging in there, though I've mostly switched to canned gas due to the @$@&^!! ethanol that fouls small engines, especially 2 cycles.

Also for almost all uses, water is not depleted or broken down. It just changes locations. Not to mention water used flushing your toilet is a drop in the bucket compared to agricultural/irrigation uses. All the low flow water conservation methods change nothing for the environment, although they do provided relief to strained potable water systems.

165 …and disconnecting the stupid lever system on lawn mowers that shuts off the engine if you let go.

I prefer these. They don’t make the experience of mowing my lawn any different (unlike the gas cans), and it makes turning the mower off temporarily much easier: just let go. Mowers really are incredibly unsafe devices, so I am happy springing for what appears to be a useful and unobtrusive safety feature. Of course, they should not be mandated.

For nearly the same reason, I went out of my way to disable the brake lock on the stereo I installed in my car. I’m not going to hack into the brake system, even if it is just the brake light, in order to keep me from using my car stereo for something I’m never going to use it for anyway—watching videos while driving (and, as it turns out, I have listened to audio commentaries on that stereo, which I would not have been able to do if I hadn’t overridden that system).

If I recall, the argument at the time was that the vent could cause irregular gas flow, which would cause more spilling.

The new cans had the vent in the spout so that the gas would pour more evenly and be less likely to spill.

Of course, the slight inconvenience of having to account for a slightly irregular flow (something all guys are accustomed to dealing with IYKWIMAITYD) was much less of a pain in the balls then the fact that the "modern" gas cans never worked as advertised, and in fact, were much more likely to spill everywhere.

Something the "experts" did not predict.

Yeah, there are ways around it. "race fuel" cans also work well. But they're like $70 and are designed to speed refueling go carts at races -- way over designed for filling up a lawn mower.

The point is, it's absurd that we have to hack our way back to a technology that was reliable and cheap.

Luckily, I haven't had to deal with any gas cans in years.

The new cans had the vent in the spout so that the gas would pour more evenly and be less likely to spill.

293 I am absolutely amazed at the clown judge writing herself a line-item veto into the Constitution to give herself the authority to order the Executive not to "take care" to faithfully execute a law duly passed by Congress.

She isn't striking down the whole law--as is the tenuous power taken under Marbury--but merely the portion she disagrees with.

There is no Constitutional basis for her to:
1) strike down only a portion of a law*
2) order the Executive to spend money from the treasury that has not been appropriated by Congress

And not just that, she is openly flouting and ignoring multiple, directly on-point Supreme Court precedents--including on just handed down this term!

* However, this rot traces to the fucking Tard Roberts, breezing past that there was no "savings clause" in ObamaCare to pretend he could strike the state Medicare mandate but save the rest of the law

360 People on LinkedIn freaking out that the Sydney Sweeney ad campaign is a maga racists dog whistle. Great jeans (genes) means that she’s white and white people are great and the ad campaign really means let’s get rid of all POCs from America.

No really, these people exist. And they work in your HR department most likely.

And as far as I can tell, it's not American blacks leading the charge on this visceral anti-white hate.

Yeah, this stuff is arranged behind the scenes. In the same way the EPA will work with a "non profit" to get around laws and rules (likely financed by taxpayer dollars). The non profit sues the EPA, then the EPA will "settle" with that group, and golly gee, the settlement is exactly what the EPA was trying to do in the first place, but unfortunately they have no choice in the matter and we must by-pass the normal governing process, because a judge signed off on the settlement.

386 Before I replaced ALL of my gas, diesel, and kerosene jugs with those VP Racing jugs, I was fueling my tractor with one of those jugs that had a press-down nozzle valve where you have to put some of the weight of the container on the opening of the fuel tank. So maaaaybe I left the thing in the sun too many times and the plastic was a little bit brittle, and it broke, splattering me with diesel (my pajamas still smell like diesel - hey, I live outta town, I'll wear what I want). I have been thinking that this divide is more urban/rural than liberal/conservative, but this is sure a good sign of good sense returning in some areas.

In the Jubilee Soveriegn, by Stanley Holloway, young Albert Ramsbottom swallows a sovereign given to him by his grandmother, and the family takes him to a specialist to have it removed. When it is revealed that the doctor can have it done for a steep price, his father gives the doctor the boy and tells him to keep the change

391 Early in my engineering career I got an HR fat woman fired. SHe told me that I had to use my vacation time or lose it (about 3 weeks) I had put off using it at the behest of the president of the company as I was the replacement project engineer of a must complete machine design. So I put in the forms to take my 3 weeks and the president came up to me rather upset that I had done that. When I told him that I had explained to the fat bitch in accounting the reason she was unimpressed. He said he would fix that particular problem. She was escorted out later that afternoon.

Bit of both.plenty of Malcolm X type native blacks still exist who push this shit.

Indians can be uber anti-white. Lots of this is generated by them. African immigrants, are the exact opposite. They hate woke bullshit.

398 Buck,
Didn't read the comments so maybe it was discussed.

My only point is that this was NEVER about reducing emissions. It was about making it painful to use gas powered tools. They want to punish people for using lawn mowers, leaf blowers, dirt bikes, etc.

They hate us, and hate everything we do.

Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) at July 28, 2025 01:50 PM (O1jNN)

399 Those EPA cans can be made to work. You gut the valve and install a vent. Use the spout cover, just like to old ones, when not in use. I use a tire stem for a vent.

Posted by: sTevo at July 28, 2025 01:51 PM (nslIN)

400 You now, when the shitty gas can first came out, I thought, well, sooner or later they will design one that works. Years later, they still didn't fucking work.

And every idiot knows you close the vent for storage.

402 Buck,
(Sorry for these comments, I am just waking up and you hit a nerve.)

It is not incompetence, it was planned. Obama said he wanted the price of gas to "necessarily skyrocket." Do you think that attitude did not trickle down?

I imagine the EPA regulators were giggling over the idea of making gas cans frustratingly useless. That was always the goal.
