The bad news: We might be losing three of our trees. One of them doesn't have a top half anymore, two of them have most of their limbs dangling by strips of bark. My parents lost a tree that they planted the year they moved into their house, when I was a little older than Lil Pooky is now.
The good news: We had so much help today! My in-laws came over with their pickup truck, my high school chemistry teacher and his son (Pooky's best friend growing up) stopped by with chainsaws and spent the afternoon cutting and hauling away. Church youth groups roamed around, helping anyone they spotted. One pickup even stopped and asked if we needed water. Trees did hit houses on a street five blocks from us, but no one got hurt, thank God!
We got a lot done today, now we just need to know the assessments on the trees.

At a university when I was 20, I was one of very few females in all male pre-med classes. 100 to 3 ratio. I am not ugly and could not understand why not one guy asked me out. I was ready. Was it my redneck accent? Rancid BO I was unaware of? My husband, whom I met a year later, said they were intimidated. Well, he sure wasn't!

I was taking his vital signs, which were normal. He joked that his BP might be high. Why? He said that "anyone who looked at me would have their BP rise." He was teasing, but now this would mean prison, right?
Bf/husband I knew from some keggers/friends. We never had the awkward first kiss because he kissed me with no warning at a party. The death sentence for him? No one else did this prior, but he said he could not resist. I kissed him back.

Now that I spent all my money, I'm now soliciting donations so I can pay my mortgage this month.
This will be my third time seeing the band and they are freakishly great. The McCartney Wings band was trash panda stuff. He the put this band together around 2000 and the same line up ever since. I don't say this lightly because I've seen stellar performances in my life, but this whole thing is in a whole different level of excellent. This is the best band I've ever seen and it's not even close.

Back in the day at Dahlberg Arena at U of Montana. The student section would toss items on to court when opposing team members were announced. So when Air Force played there, paper planes were toss, Montana State bobcats, kitty litter bags ended up on the court.
The best was when Idaho showed up and potatoes were rolled onto to the court. One year an Idaho player flipped off the students. Next thing he knew there were dozens of potatoes thrown at the Idaho bench. It was mayhem. It was like a WW II naval beach shelling. Players were ducking, falling on the floor or running away.
The team got a technical foul to start the game and the days of tossing things on the court were over.

I have a close friend, an attorney, who has a daughter who is drop dead beautiful. Period. Believe this. He told me that regular guys, the kind who might make a good son in law, NEVER asked her out because they reasoned that "a girl who looks like that like that would never go out with ME." So they never tried.
He told me that all the guys who DID ask her out were "cocky bastards" whom he didn't much like.
P.S. The young lady is happily married now & the mother of two kids. So, I guess the situation sorted itself out somehow.
The fact that her parents were wealthy probably played into the intimidation factor as well.
Btw, KC Chefs owner Clark Hunt has a daughter who could be a professional model. Probably take a lot of social courage to ask HER out.

Fun fact: in 2007, with 3 major wildfires in the county, and nearly a quarter million evacuations, the poh-lice and sheriffs had a tiny handful of incidents to respond to. The national (and especially urban) degradation, at least back then, still hadn't yet destroyed this place, in that sense.

Well, the alternator on my '08 Crown Vic was apparently a heat exhaustion casualty this evening. Light came on, barely mustering 12.6V. It's was putting enough out to allow us to make it home from the hospital. So, I'll be fixing that tomorrow.
And GSP set the all-time record for consecutive 90F days today, a 39 day run. The old record was 38, set in '93.
Locally, I didn't make it. On July 10th here, it didn't quite make 90F, only 88F.

And I got pissed off at Mrs. Duke this afternoon. Happened to notice the voltage had dropped to 113V on one leg, 227V line to line. That's the high demand peaking late afternoon. I remember voltage was getting low back in the late '90s on one phase out in the shop. It was 116V, and I thought that was too low.

Just looking at the records. GSP area has had 138 100F days total since 1884 when records began. So, about 1 per year on average. They don't bother calculating any normals for that. From 2017 to 2023, they didn't have any, and had 2 in 2024.

Apparently they no longer do M2 practice on the East Miramar ranges. Counted it as a special privilege to sit on my back porch, ocean in view, idiotic CA residents all around, and hear the sweet mechanical melody of the Ma Deuce drifting over. Also almost certainly a unique thing in any major US city or suburb, these days. But haven't heard it in a while, and some guy at a shooting match in Alpine said they no longer were using those ranges for heavy stuff.

Except you are dealing with one pulse, moving at 500 mph. As it diffracts around an obstacle, the two wave fronts would meet again, and there would be both constructive and destructive interference. You might get "rays" of relative calm, and "rays" of greater pulse height. This sort of thing can be modelled in tanks.

5 hours later the BBQ had been going for hours... over 100 people partying... everyone at least in a bathing suit... one guy had an inflatable rubber ducky he was wearing... 8 Hours in the next shift got off work, and the guys who had been working security came by with more beer...
Needless to say... Epic party.

A normal surface wave does not displace the water a significant depths so it contains less energy and cannot propagate as far.
That entire surface to bottom volume contains a very large amount of mass and forcing it all to shift in a small period of time stores a huge amount of kinetic energy. That energy is gradually turned into potential energy as the bottom becomes shallower forcing the water higher but then that height can dissipate energy by flowing forward and backward.
That reverse direction propagation velocity increases as the depth becomes shallower is what also causes the water level to drop before the wave hits.
Eventually the forward motion along with the height forms a wave.
