A slimmed-down, more nutrient-dense, individual field ration is now available for order for all troops. A crude pothole graffiti tactic got Portland’s attention. Today was looooooong as we cleaned up from last night's storm.
The bad news: We might be losing three of our trees. One of them doesn't have a top half anymore, two of them have most of their limbs dangling by strips of bark. My parents lost a tree that they planted the year they moved into their house, when I was a little older than Lil Pooky is now. The good news: We had so much help today! My in-laws came over with their pickup truck, my high school chemistry teacher and his son (Pooky's best friend growing up) stopped by with chainsaws and spent the afternoon cutting and hauling away. Church youth groups roamed around, helping anyone they spotted. One pickup even stopped and asked if we needed water. Trees did hit houses on a street five blocks from us, but no one got hurt, thank God! We got a lot done today, now we just need to know the assessments on the trees. According to the rangers at Yellowstone, Chinese tourists were the worst. They have been conditioned that anything unsafe is cordoned off. If there are no guardrails, it’s deemed safe. They want to walk off the boardwalk. There is often a thin layer of “ice” — crusted-over dried chemical residue. Narrator voice: “it’s thin and unsafe.”

Goodness, I did not realize boys hitting on girls was so dangerous now! That video was mind blowing. "Super Ugly Offended Females" should be a band?
At a university when I was 20, I was one of very few females in all male pre-med classes. 100 to 3 ratio. I am not ugly and could not understand why not one guy asked me out. I was ready. Was it my redneck accent? Rancid BO I was unaware of? My husband, whom I met a year later, said they were intimidated. Well, he sure wasn't! One guy, finally!, whom I would have run away with except he sadly died (seriously) of cancer months later. It was instant chemistry. A first. Anyway, he seemed interested at the health clinic, and obviously not ill at the time. I was taking his vital signs, which were normal. He joked that his BP might be high. Why? He said that "anyone who looked at me would have their BP rise." He was teasing, but now this would mean prison, right? Bf/husband I knew from some keggers/friends. We never had the awkward first kiss because he kissed me with no warning at a party. The death sentence for him? No one else did this prior, but he said he could not resist. I kissed him back. I needed to report this to the ONT app. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at July 29, 2025 10:30 PM (6PCLE) 118

I nailed a ticket to go see Paul McCartney in San Antonio. The ticket price when adjusted for inflation is probably about the same as I paid in 2013 to see him the first time. What's different is the fees are completely out of control.
Now that I spent all my money, I'm now soliciting donations so I can pay my mortgage this month. This will be my third time seeing the band and they are freakishly great. The McCartney Wings band was trash panda stuff. He the put this band together around 2000 and the same line up ever since. I don't say this lightly because I've seen stellar performances in my life, but this whole thing is in a whole different level of excellent. This is the best band I've ever seen and it's not even close. Now about those donations... Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 29, 2025 10:43 PM (9vYpt) 169

8.6 was (I heard) in the top ten of earthquakes, not sure about 8.8. But the tsunami seems much less than what has hit other areas, like Japan in ~2011. A few beach combers might get a big bath, but mostly little damage, at least compared to the other big tsunamis.
Posted by: illiniwek at July 29, 2025 10:09 PM (vbXSk) Well, it depends upon the sense of motion on the fault. If it's lateral, then not much tsunami will occur. If it's vertical, then a tsunami is likely. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 29, 2025 10:47 PM (6RYcT) 181

If a WNBA player has a triple-double they should call it a wig trick and throw wigs on the court like hats in hockey
Posted by: Smell the Glove at July 29, 2025 10:41 PM (A7hgX) Back in the day at Dahlberg Arena at U of Montana. The student section would toss items on to court when opposing team members were announced. So when Air Force played there, paper planes were toss, Montana State bobcats, kitty litter bags ended up on the court. The best was when Idaho showed up and potatoes were rolled onto to the court. One year an Idaho player flipped off the students. Next thing he knew there were dozens of potatoes thrown at the Idaho bench. It was mayhem. It was like a WW II naval beach shelling. Players were ducking, falling on the floor or running away. The team got a technical foul to start the game and the days of tossing things on the court were over. This is consistent with the "women FAFO" video above:
I have a close friend, an attorney, who has a daughter who is drop dead beautiful. Period. Believe this. He told me that regular guys, the kind who might make a good son in law, NEVER asked her out because they reasoned that "a girl who looks like that like that would never go out with ME." So they never tried. He told me that all the guys who DID ask her out were "cocky bastards" whom he didn't much like. P.S. The young lady is happily married now & the mother of two kids. So, I guess the situation sorted itself out somehow. The fact that her parents were wealthy probably played into the intimidation factor as well. Btw, KC Chefs owner Clark Hunt has a daughter who could be a professional model. Probably take a lot of social courage to ask HER out. Posted by: mnw at July 29, 2025 11:08 PM (BmACR) 245

I thought they made the decision after the G7 riots in Seattle way back when that it was not legal to prevent civilians from having protective equipment from riot control agents Which these masks were not, and in fact appear to be only capable of preventing any meaningful protection from chemical agents while looking really cool Posted by: Kindltot at July 29, 2025 11:21 PM (D7oie) 283

Earthquakes in developed countries can/could be extremely expensive, but not that dangerous. If seismically-oriented building standards are used.
"The big one" here will be an interesting event if it happens. Biggest insurance casualty in human history, but probably not many dead. Lots of hassle. Given the decline in the competence and sense of the US population, and the astonishing transformation of one of the world's best governments (CA) into the state it's in now, things will be much much worse than they need to be. Water, some food, batteries, all I think I need. Ammo and gunzzz - far in excess of needs. Fun fact: in 2007, with 3 major wildfires in the county, and nearly a quarter million evacuations, the poh-lice and sheriffs had a tiny handful of incidents to respond to. The national (and especially urban) degradation, at least back then, still hadn't yet destroyed this place, in that sense. Posted by: rhomboid at July 29, 2025 11:27 PM (U/Byj) 301

Some idiot in the Seattle area is suing the Navy, claiming that a performance of the Blue Angels created sonic booms, which killed her cat... and also damaged marine life, like Orcas, in the Puget Sound.
The degree of ignorance this woman displays is breathtaking, but a worse characteristic is that there is actually a lawyer, who supposedly passed the bar exam, is willing to file this heaping pile of bullshit as a lawsuit. There is no way in hell that the Blue Angels would break the sound barrier in a performance. At the performance altitude, that action would have shattered thousands of windows. It's another example of the dumbing down of America. During the shooting incident in NYC, a police spokescritter explained that they found, in the suspects car, "a revolver and spare magazines". It's not that people make these errors, it's that supposed " experts" are so damned stupid. A lawyer should know enough to distinguish between a sonic boom and loud noise. Someone in the POLICE department should have enough firearm familiarity to know that a revolver does not use a magazine. The Elite class is the Idiot class. It's was putting enough out to allow us to make it home from the hospital. So, I'll be fixing that tomorrow. And GSP set the all-time record for consecutive 90F days today, a 39 day run. The Kamchatka Peninsula earthquake has been upgraded to an 8.8 magnitude. The fault plane solution shows subduction associated with a thrust fault. Which means the sea floor gets shoved up, displacing all that water, so this one generates a tsunami (where a simple strike/slip fault would not). Each increment in magnitude means 32 times the amount of energy is released. So there's a hecka difference between an 8.0 and and 8.8 (neither of which is pleasant). Intensity was rated IX, where the shaking is violent and the damage is heavy. Send a few prayers their way...

A Tsunami wave travels at 500 mph? See where I’m goin’ with that? Even a ripple at 500 mph should be visible on the ocean surface. I’m just surprised this causes no trouble in the open ocean is all.

But I don't think the actual nukes, the payloads, are "leased". France has its "own" subs and SLBMs*, and of course its own nuke program (wish they'd touch some off in the South Pacific to, um, "nuke" the CTBT, which was a stupid idea, as most "arms control" is).
* funner fact: France's SLBM program was helped through critical hurdles by, literally, wink-and-nod US "advice" - French engineers would pass designs, testing protocols, specific problems encountered, to US engineers at meetings, and the US side would provide non-verbal cues as to their advice and answers. To avoid running afoul of laws prohibiting explicit assistance. All in the US interest. Funny, "America First" doesn't really mean anything at all, absent specifics and context. AOP, yes, wrap-arounds. A basic aspect of point breaks, for surfing purposes. But the energy (and I would think amplitude) would be diminished, and when leading edges cross/intersect, "confused" surf would result. Just thinking it's better than straight approach - though I don't know the azimuth of this surge/wave, relative to the CA coast.

Topography of the sea floor off the coastline and direction of the tsunami wave controls a lot of the impact. Hilo gets it bad because the sea floor is shallow a fair ways out so there's more "run up" which increases the height of the waves.

Semi-Literate Thug, Santee? Anyway, yes, not much to block the sound from Miramar east across Camp Elliott, now East Miramar.
Apparently they no longer do M2 practice on the East Miramar ranges. Counted it as a special privilege to sit on my back porch, ocean in view, idiotic CA residents all around, and hear the sweet mechanical melody of the Ma Deuce drifting over. Also almost certainly a unique thing in any major US city or suburb, these days. But haven't heard it in a while, and some guy at a shooting match in Alpine said they no longer were using those ranges for heavy stuff. Posted by: rhomboid at July 30, 2025 01:25 AM (U/Byj) 537

Posted by: rhomboid at July 30, 2025 01:22 AM (U/Byj) Except you are dealing with one pulse, moving at 500 mph. As it diffracts around an obstacle, the two wave fronts would meet again, and there would be both constructive and destructive interference. You might get "rays" of relative calm, and "rays" of greater pulse height. This sort of thing can be modelled in tanks. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 30, 2025 01:27 AM (Zzf3f) 539

Posted by: rhomboid at July 30, 2025 01:22 AM (U/Byj) ---------- Looking at the map, with respect to SoCal to the Kamchatka Peninsula, the angle appears to be about 300 degrees, which could slip right down between the Channel Islands and the coast. A tsunami has a small amplitude in deep water but is different than a normal wave. The height of the tsunami represents a shift of the entire volume of water from the surface all the way to the bottom.
A normal surface wave does not displace the water a significant depths so it contains less energy and cannot propagate as far. That entire surface to bottom volume contains a very large amount of mass and forcing it all to shift in a small period of time stores a huge amount of kinetic energy. That energy is gradually turned into potential energy as the bottom becomes shallower forcing the water higher but then that height can dissipate energy by flowing forward and backward. That reverse direction propagation velocity increases as the depth becomes shallower is what also causes the water level to drop before the wave hits. Eventually the forward motion along with the height forms a wave. Posted by: pawn at July 30, 2025 04:55 AM (QB+5g) Processing 0.1, elapsed 0.1018 seconds. |
