That's been around for quite some time.

When I started basic at Ft Benning back in August 19 *mumble* they paid close attention to the wet bulb index.

That seemed to have a short duration. It may have been something for training companies early in their cycle and thus not acclimated, or maybe we got hit by global cooling in mid September.

Sixteen people have so far been killed while tens of thousands have been moved to evacuation centres on both sides of the border

The fighting that started Thursday marks a dramatic escalation of a conflict that dates back more than a century

I have a question for you, Perfesser, and anyone else who reads, but I'm usually not around to ask things on Sunday. My friend, the academic librarian, is lamenting that more than 60 percent of young people don't take out actual books. Can you think of anything to encourage this? I suggested an intro to the library and a college version of a scavenger hunt coordinated through the student activities office. with some prizes awarded. Does the library at your school do anything like this?

I have too many books , but I would go out of my mind if I had to only read books online

Thanks.

80 Watched a neat little Western thriller last night on Grit: The Tall T from '57, with Randolph Scott. The rest of the cast was just as stellar: Maureen O'Sullivan, with Richard Boone, Skip Homeier, and Henry Silva as a nasty bunch of criminal gunmen. What caught my attention was that it was Elmore Leonard's first movie script, an original from the days when he was writing his excellent Westerns. Boone and his cohorts take over a stage station in the AZ desert, expecting to rob a mail coach, and get Scott, O'Sullivan, and her spineless new husband instead.

The setup and the dialog feel very much like an EL novel, and it builds to a satisfying climax. Good stuff.

The sad truth is that if students are not avid book readers by the time they get to college, they probably never will be. They've grown up in a digital age, so digital content is almost all they've known their entire lives. And their K-12 experience has probably damaged their ability to appreciate books the way you and I do. I don't think there is much we can do to fix that.

I try to encourage my students to read, but only a few of them will ever become lifelong readers.

87 The GPD Win 5 is a handheld gaming device... With a Ryzen AI Max 395+. (Liliputing)

What.

That chip uses 80W in low power mode.

Does it come with oven mitts?

It will make a good hand dryer with all the fans it’s going to need.

The other problem is battery life.

The biggest battery they could fit in the thing has to be around 55Whr.

So even if they can get the TDP down to 55 watts in low power mode the thing will suck all the juice out of it in about 45 minutes.

Even if they could fit the FAA limit for batteries at 99Whr in there (which I doubt), you might get an 90 minutes on battery.

It will be interesting to see how GPD gets around all of that when this handheld in released.

88 Last Ventures thing for me today.

This guy goes into a breakfast place in the Tacoma Washington area and orders breakfast. The waitress asks him how his day is going and the guy responds. It's a great day. I've been listening to the greatest guitar music on the planet, The Ventures.

When he goes to pay his bill he finds out it was taken care of. From the perplexed look on his face the waitress understood she needed to clear up the matter by telling him that the guy sitting at the bar paid it. She then casually dropped who that guy was.

That guy was Don Wilson a founding member and guitarist for the Ventures. Mr. Wilson passed in 2022 in his hometown, Tacoma Washington.

They were playing that one a lot last year on Starz Westerns.

It grew on me, as I wasn’t really impressed with it at first.

Thanks for the background on the writer as it’s a dialogue-heavy film. There are some good action scenes, but a lot of it is Scott’s character mind-gaming the bandits into killing each other.

The young Henry Silva as one of the baddies was good in his role as Chink.

Richard Boone was excellent in his part as the head bad guy.

I watched it a few times last year I liked it so much.

Boone was good at playing good or bad, one of those rare stars who could do both.

You know who else I noticed could play good or bad well after watching Texas Rangers (1936)?

Fred MacMurray.

He could play the nicest husband and father or the most crooked and evil character without missing a beat.

Sometimes he even played the bad guy who went good, like in Texas Rangers.

Arthur Kennedy and Charles Drake also had that same talent.

I would love to know what they mean by significant external customer. Does this mean companies like Dell are telling them to pack sand? This sounds like Intel is going to be liquidating the office and selling it off the real estate. Anybody here want to go in together and buy a Fab?

MacMurray also had that little role in Double Indemnity that he was quite famous for.

Drake appears in a lot of westerns in the 50s.

He’s in Winchester ‘73 as Shelly Winters soon to be ex-boyfriend who’s not bad but yellow.

He’s in several others I’ve seen lately, too.
He’s a good guy in some, bad in others.

He and Audie Murphy were in a few westerns together, including Walk the Proud Land, where Murphy plays an Indian Agent at an Apache Reservation.

The role he deservedly is best remembered for.

The film version, partly written by Raymond Chandler, has a better end scene than does the James M. Cain novel (which has a shivery ending of its own). Amazing that a film can occasionally be even better than its source novel.

If there was nothing else, the scene where Edward G. Robinson's Keyes, MacMurray's boss at the insurance company, lectures the company's owner about all the ways people have committed suicide, is a gem, and a master class on how you dominate the screen.

I’d go for the 4060 GPU if it’s available and isn’t a lot more expensive, though.

The rest of the specs are fine for a little gaming laptop. At 512GB, you might need an extra external SSD with the size of games these days.

169 If there was nothing else, the scene where Edward G. Robinson's Keyes, MacMurray's boss at the insurance company, lectures the company's owner about all the ways people have committed suicide, is a gem, and a master class on how you dominate the screen.

Edward G. Robinson.
Another actor who could be good or bad.

You don’t see many modern actors who can pull off both sides of humanity anymore.

Anthony Hopkins comes to mind, immediately.

But most actors are pigeonholed these days it seems.

I think Anthony Perkins (Psycho, On The Beach) also could do the both sides thing.

You'd think, but the adult board game market is insanely huge and attracts a lot of money. And I do mean "insane"; people who absolutely do not have that kind of disposable income are spending $200+ per month on "all-in" crowdfunding projects that will take 2 years to complete.

It's cooling off, though. I'm in several board game buy & sell social media groups and the number of people liquidating their entire collections because they need money or have to move to a smaller home has skyrocketed. People went a bit nuts buying board games during the lockdowns and those decisions are coming back to haunt them.
